Help system in Microsoft Access.

Been asked to create a help system for a program created in microsoft access.  I have very basic skills...in my second month of a dip of software development so only covered html, javascript etc.
I have chosen the program html help workshop to create, and understand that I have to use html to create the documents, and i have to create paths etc but have no idea how to string it all together?
Anyone able to help me out here!

Hi, RoisinMurphy.
You have asked this question on the Microsoft Learning and Certification forum. There are much better forums available and I have included a bunch of resources including more appropriate forums at the end of this post for you. Let me see if I can get you
started down the right path to creating some tech docs.
I see that you have downloaded (or soon will have downloaded) and installed the Microsoft HTML Help Workshop 1.4 that is available for download here:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms669985(v=vs.85).aspx
There are three (3) files available for download. You only need two (2) of them (Htmlhelp.exe and
HelpDocs.zip). The HtmlHelpj.exe file is the Japanese version and I am assuming you won't be using that.
After downloading the two (2) files, you will need to unblock each of them. To do this, right-click the
Htmlhelp.exe file and click Properties. Click the
Unblock button and then click OK. Repeat this process with the other file,
HelpDocs.zip. It is important that you do this before you extract the files inside so the Windows operating system (OS) will trust the files.
After unblocking it, right-click the HelpDocs.zip file and click Extract All... to extract the .chm help files to a nearby folder.
You can install the application by running the Htmlhelp.exe installer. It will tell you that it is v1.3 and that newer files may already exist on the target system - that is just fine! After installing it, you can launch it from the
Start menu.
There is a lot of documentation and access to help professionals available online! Here are some sites that I found:
Here is the main HTML Help 1.4 documentation:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms670169(v=vs.85).aspx
Here is the Microsoft Help MVP Program (may not be that helpful!):
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/ms669981.aspx
Here is a list of Help MVPs with links to other Html Help support sites:
http://www.helpmvp.com/
Here is the MSHelpWiki:
http://mshelpwiki.helpmvp.com/helpbasics
I believe the main help files that you extracted (htmlhelp.chm, etc.) and the HTML Help 1.4 documentation will have enough information to get you started.
Good luck!
Best wishes, Davin Mickelson

  • Compact and Repair Anomaly in Microsoft Access 2003 - dupicate key repair

    Can anyone explain the anomaly below where “Compact and Repair” is less functional on System A?
     System A:       Microsoft
     Access 2003 v11.8321.8403 SP3 on Windows XP SP3
     System B:        Microsoft
     Access 2003 v11.8166.8172 SP3 on Windows 7 Home Premium
     “System A” is the operational system.
    The application is a back end–front end pair of Access .mdb files.
    Sequence 1:
    The user on System A gets a unique key error(*) when attempting to enter a new row in a particular form, though there appears to be no key clash.
    The back end file undergoes “Compact and Repair”.
    Compact and Repair has modified the file which has halved in size (10MB down to 5MB)
    The unique key error still occurs.
    N.B.: I also tried preceding the “Compact and Repair” by opening the back end with "/decompile".
    Sequence 2:
    Original front end–back end pair copied to System B
    The user on System B gets a unique key error(*) when attempting to enter new row.
    The back end file on System B undergoes “Compact and Repair”.
    The user on System B is now able to enter the row
    The back end file is copied back to System A
    The user on System A is now able to enter new rows
    Inference: The Compact and Repair on System B was effective and on System A was not.
    (*) The dialogue box error reads:
    The changes you requested to the table were not successful because they would create duplicate values in the index, primary key, or relationship.

  • Accessing Microsoft Access DB (.mdb) under a Linux system

    Hello guys, i need to have access to an .mdb (damned microsoft) file under a Linux system. Is this feasible?
    I have installed successfully jdbc, unixodbc and jdbc-odbc bridge. I get connected, but upon a select query statement i get an error similar to that "No database selected".
    I understand that might want to have a different driver (X) in order to have odbc talk to it, and then have (X) to talk to .mdb file. But which is that driver (X)???
    Has anyone tried that before?
    Thanks a lot.

    Restore from the backup you had prior to installing Mavericks.
    However, the upgrade should not have altered your partition scheme. Did your erase and format the drive prior to upgrading?

  • Help with [Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver]Error in row

    hi all,
    it seems i have the same problem updating a field in access database here is what my access table has:
    a field called userID of type String in Access 2000 on XP.
    i wrote the following code in java using Eclipse 3.1.1 ( latest) to update that field:
    String database= "jdbc:odbc:Driver={Microsoft Access Driver(*.mdb)};DBQ=";
    String url= database + filename.trim() + ";DriverID=22;READONLY=true}";
    Class.forName("sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver");
    Connection con= DriverManager.getConnection( url,"","");
    con.setAutoCommit(false);
    Statement stmt = con.createStatement(ResultSet.TYPE_SCROLL_INSENSITIVE,ResultSet.CONCUR_UPDATABLE);
    stmt.executeQuery("SELECT Users.* FROM Users");
    ResultSet rs = stmt.getResultSet();
    rs.moveToInsertRow();
    rs.updateInt(1,"test");
    rs.updateRow();
    con.commit();
    rs.close();
    stmt.close()
    con.close();
    i get this error :[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Invalid cursor state
    if i use the same code with using re.next(); before rs.moveToInsertRow(); i get [Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver]Error in row
    i get the errors right at : rs.updateRow();
    i dont know what exactly the problem is. why doesnt it get updated and complain about it.
    plz help

    I'm not sure which JDBC driver you are using.
    An access database, by default, has a username and
    password as "admin" and "" (ie, empty password).
    Actually MS Access has two methods for security. You
    are referring to one of them.
    If the password of admin is changed, you have to
    provide the name of the workgroup information file
    also( where it is stored) for making a connection.
    I am not sure about the ODBC bridge driver. What iam
    using is Atinav's aveConnet JDBC driver. It has
    provision for giving username and passwords through
    Workgroup information file. In addition to it youcan
    give the database password also.
    Interesting to note. The bridge for MS Access does
    not use that security method. And it will fail if you
    set up security using the groups/users adminstration.
    The only method it allows is via the "database
    password" method.Thank you for your response, but what User ID should I use when I use database password?
    openConnection(URL,"xxxx","database password")
    thanks again

  • Help, I've accidently deleted some of my microsoft access information at work.

    We use Microsoft access for our cusotmer database at work, Im pretty new to access and I was trying to enter a new customer into the database. I clicked the "Edit Only" option, then I clicked "view" from the tool bar; from the
    drop down menu I selected "datasheet view". From there I clicked on Company ID from the datasheet view which was the very first column on the left side. I then somehow erased all my information. I still have all my customers info in the search
    option, but when I click edit its all gone. Is there a way to recover the editing information or can I copy and paste somehow? Please help! I do not want to mess up our database on my first month on the job =(

  • Non-technical user needs help with Microsoft Access/MS-Query connection

    I've read through some of the other threads on problems with the ODBC connection from MS Access to an Oracle database but as a non-techie I'm afraid I need to ask based on the steps I have always used. I'm not totally inexperienced as I have gone through the same steps on multiple Windows XP machine running different versions of Oracle and Office over the past 10 years but the steps aren't working this time. If there are settings that need to be checked or changed (path, etc.) I'm afraid I'll need specific instructions as to where I need to look for them.
    I'm currently trying to set up a connection on a new laptop running a 64-bit version of Windows 2007 Professional.
    1) I've installed a full 64 bit Oracle 11g client and 32 bit copy of Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013.
    2) I set up the Oracle data source using the client Net Manager. I can connect from there.
    3) I added it in the Oracle-provided Microsoft ODBC Administrator and can connect from there.
    I the past, after doing this, the was automatically included in the list of ODBC Databases in MS Acess but this time it's not. I tried adding it as a new data source by selecting the Microsoft ODBC for Oracle driver but receive the same  "The Oracle(tm) client and networking components were not found" error message that has plagued so many others.

    This is bad code, for lots of reasons:
    (1) Scriptlet code like this should not be used. Learn JSTL and use its <sql> tags if you must.
    (2) This code belongs in a Java object that you can test outside of a JSP. JSPs are for display only. Let server-side objects do the database work for you.
    (3) You don't close any ResultSet, Statement, or Connection that I can see. Microsoft Access doesn't save any records until you close the Connection.
    (4) You don't have any transactional logic. When you write to a database, you usually want it to be a unit of work that is committed or rolled back together.

    INSERT INTO TRANSLOG ( userid, booktitle, date, amount ) VALUES (?,?,?,?)I don't have Access on my computer at home here, but it is quite possible that "date" is a reserved word in Access's version of SQL. If you can change the column name, I'd recommend you do that. Otherwise try changing your SQL code to this:
    INSERT INTO TRANSLOG ( userid, booktitle, [date], amount ) VALUES (?,?,?,?)
    But be warned that this [trick] doesn't work with other databases.

  • Microsoft Access forms to pdf with hyperlinks?

    Help needed.
    I can convert Microsoft Word files to PDF and preserve hyperlinks.
    I wrote a new application for our parts department using Microsoft Access.
    When I PDF a form with a particular part displayed, it does not preserve the hyperlinks.
    Now I am in trouble because we need this feature for the engineers to be able to access supporting information about each part (data sheets etc.)
    Since the engineers are used to the "Microsoft Word" earlier version they are not amenable in going "backwards" with the "new" system and not having active hyperlinks to the support documents.
    I have searched everywhere for a solution and so far found nothing that works.
    I am using Acrobat PRO X and Microsoft Access PRO 2010
    please help as my "neck" is on the line...
    thanks
    Richard

    In Access try File->Save as PDF.
    If it's anything like in Word, the Save as PDF function does it a different way (ie. not via Postscript) compared to Acrobat. So you might get a result that way.

  • RoboHelp Server 7 Help System Errors

    Whenever I publish my RH 7 Help project to server, I check
    the RoboHelp Server Web Administrator for errors. I always get Help
    System Error "Requested file cannot be found" for a file called
    bsscfp.txt. To my knowledge, this is a control file generated
    during the publishing process. If this is the case why is an error
    being generated for a file I have no control over? Also, I find the
    Troubleshooting section of RoboHelp Server Web Administrator to be
    rather useless in correcting issues. Is there any reference
    documentation that explains some of the cryptic error messages that
    appear in the Server Web Administrator screen?

    Hi, ouque and welcome to the forum.
    Just to clarify your setup. When you say "Project pane" are
    you referring to the Configuration Manager on the server itself.
    Or, are you referring to something you are seeing from the RoboHelp
    authoring client app's Server Administration pane?
    If you have access to the actual server desktop and view the
    Configuration Manager, sometimes on a new installation, you can do
    a "refresh" and the project will show up.
    A few more questions:
    Have you tried accessing the website and does the project
    come up in the web browser?
    On what kind of web server did you install RHS7? Windows
    2003, etc.?
    Is Microsoft Indexing Services turned on?
    Apparently you were able to successfully publish your project
    to the server so there is "communication" between your desktop and
    the server I gather.
    A few more details and we'll try to help.
    Thanx,
    john

    }i have a class Conexion wich controls the connection and resultsets
    As you can see, i tested accessing a jpeg file: 1.jpg with FileInputStream, and it works perfectly, but when i try to get an image from Microsoft Access using the resultset the way i did, the browser shows the following message
    The image http://localhost:8084/Nedermex/serv cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.
    My table in the database in Access is configured as following
    FieldName::::::::::::::DataType
    ID::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::Number
    Imagen::::::::::::::::::::OLE Object
    Now, when i insert an image in the Imagen field, i select the option "Create from file" and select the jpg file (the one that worked with the FileInputStream) and uncheck the Link option (to save the data in the db
    maybe there is something wrong with the sizes or something....
    please help me here!!!
    thank you!

  • ODBC Microsoft Access Driver Error

    Help! I'm a novice. I have PSE3.0 installed on my laptop (HP Pavillion) which has the Windows XP operating system. It has been working ok for a couple of years and is now causing problems. I was able to import scaned items and photos from files on my hard drive. A couple of days ago, when I tried to do that, I received the following message "[Microsoft [ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] cannot open database]. It may not be a datbase that your application recognizes or the file may be corrupt." I was also not able to import photos directly from my camera chip. Is this an Adobe problem or a MS problem? Any suggestions as to how to fix? Thanks. Hank

    Hello Barb,
    Thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunately that didn't work. When I clicked on "recover" it appeared to go to 66% and then the computer froze up. I had to do a "hard" shutdown.
    I've done a defrag which the system told me was not necessary. That didn't help. I have approx 50% of free space on my hard drive. So I don't think space is an issue.
    For the past few months both the HP photo package and Adobe have been opening when I download photos from my camera. Is it possible that the two programs are somehow interferring with each other. On my last download, the photos wouldn't download to PSE3 and i received the ODBC error message. The photos did download to the HP program.
    I also tried to reinstall the PSE3 program but I received a message that said I currently have a more recent version of Adobe (I suspect that is a reference to the Adobe Reader program) and terminated the installation.
    I'm open to any suggestions. Thanks Hank
