Help troubleshooting slow user login

for the past week i've been having a problem with slower then normal login to my user account. (the top menu bar loads in slices very slowly)
login in safe mode and to another user account is much faster so i can narrow it to something in my start-up items/extensions.
what's the best way to figure out the problem: should i be disabling the login items in my user account control panel or should i be looking for something in the user/library folder?
btw, i repaired disk permission and deleted cache files using first macjanitor (which seemed to hang so i force quit) but then i followed up with onyx.

Jimyyz,
Most times that I've seen this, the problem was caused by a bad cache file in the main Library folder. Look in /Library/Caches for all cache files associated with this account (most of these will have the account's UID appended to the name: "501," 502," "503," etc.). If you don't know the account's UID, check that user's "properties" in Netinfo Manager.
Good luck!

  • Help with multiple user login script

Hi, just a little background first to what i want to do...
I have about 300 Macs in an education environment, they are bound to the AD network for authentication and OSX Server LDAP for forced prefs, the network Home accounts are stored via Apple and Promise Raids on XServes.
We also have 4 local user accounts on all the Macs for video etc. I have some simple scripts that i would like to force to the local Users only, (empty trash, reset dock. reset desktop pics and delete items etc).
I have done the script and saved it as a .app and it works on the Macs as a local User login option. However, when I bind the Mac back to the LDAP the local user script stops working. I have seen the option to 'Allow local scripts' to run via WGM, but have not had success here either, (I have ran the 2 EnableMCXLoginScripts on the clients).
Now I thought I would try to run the script as a Launchdaemon option using Lingon. This works, but its active for all users, I do not want it to delete Network account users Desktops! Is there a way I can add an 'If' option at the beginning of my script. As in..'if users home account is /Network/Sharepoint' then quit.
I cannot run it as a one script for all Mac setting as the different local users have different Desktop Pics and Docks etc
Any ideas or other options I could try?
    Any help hugely appreciated.
    C

V.K, thanks for that, sometimes I just don't see the obvious.
I have tried it as a ~/Library/LaunchAgents using lingon to create the .plist. I just cannot get it to run though. I have tried it as a .sh .scpt and as a .app file stored in the /Users/Shared folder.
All will run if I manually launch them after login though. I have made them all executable for all.
I have also tried to run it without the Mac connected to my LDAP. I have added the relevant folders to the allow list in WGM on the lDAP anyway...
Any ideas what I could be doing wrong?

  • Need help troubleshooting slow startup after installing apps

I'm relatively new to OSX (though not new to computer administration and Unix/Linux) and I need some guidance troubleshooting my slow booting Macbook.
I've got a vanilla Macbook that can installed with 10.5.5 and I've since done the upgrade to 10.5.6. I didn't have any problems until I started installing some heavier apps like the Adobe CS3 suite and MS Office (I know, I should get iLife, but I have an available license of Office.)
Since doing these installs, it has noticeably, but not drastically, slowed the start-up time of my mac. The slow down starts in the blue screen part of startup and is most noticeable as the dock and the menus load.
(I've read about Searchlight indexing, which would make sense since these are both big suites, but it's had several hours of run time to do this and many reboots and it's still a problem.)
I have my suspicions that Adobe is mostly the culprit here, but I'm not sure where to look for start-up logs and configuration info. Are there any apps out there like Start Up Control Panel (www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) for OSX? Are there any places that would be a good place to start looking? I basically want to try to make sure that only the necessary stuff is loading at start-up and and none of that "helper app" crap that was so common in windows environments.

  • Software to help troubleshoot slow machine?

I have a MBP with 16GB RAM, SSD and 2.7Ghz Core i7.  I don't know why but after a few hours of the computer running, it will start struggling to respond.  Flipping between browser tabs gets slow and when I swipe across my Dock icons, they are slow to catch up on animation.
I don't see anything in particular with Activity Monitor.  Is there any other software that can help pinpoint what is drawing on resources so much?

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • EMacs running 10.4.4 slow user logins

We have just started integrating our old iMac school lab to include eMacs. The lab runs off a dual G4 server running 10.4.4. The iMacs run 10.3.9 and have a satisfactory login time. The eMacs are running 10.4.4 and when a client logs in the login time is very slow. The screen dims and nothing happens for upwards of two minutes, then login completes. Is there a setting on the client computer that is not telling the computer to search for the server? Is this a known issue? Our primarily pc techs are not much help.

I am having a similar issue. I was running 10.3.9 server and 10.4.x clients and all was well until I moved to 10.4.4 server and then the slow logins started. Occasionally the login doesn't complete at all and I have to force restart the emac.

  • Help with other user logins

Something has changed in my logon process where now I am the only user than can login on startup.  If I logoff without shutting down, other users can log in, but only I can from a cold start.  I know this is something I did by accident.
About 1-2 weeks ago some option came up for security or something.  It sounded like a good idea so I selected and the process encrypted my HDD or something like that.  Now when my iMac boots up, I am the only user that can logon (and my logitech G700 mouse does not work upon startup but that is a minor issue).
    Thanks.

  • Help Needed - Network user login

    Hi Guys,
    Need help.
I Have a network of imac's which connect to a leopard server OD master. All my user can log on apart from one machine, where none of the users can log in to.
I have checked the username and passwords and are all correct, but on this one machine the logon screen just shakes just like when a incorrect password is entered.
    Any ideas

I'm not sure if this is relevant to your situation (which has probably been long solved), but it might help others reading this thread: I've been experiencing a similar problem with network users not being able to log onto a machine and I learned from this thread (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1788420&tstart=30) that network users must have a home directory defined in WGM, even if you're not using networked home directories. Admittedly, the fact that your users could log in from all but one machine suggests that the problem was more likely on the client machine than the server.

  • Need help troubleshooting slow Tomcat

I have a servlet that takes a keyword and passes it to a second servlet, who searches a database.
Everything is working fine on the development server. It takes a few seconds to search the database, but that is acceptable.
I have moved everything to the production server, and there, it takes minutes to do the same search. I've set the virtual memory to be the same as the dev server (3024 mb) but that is not being used anyway.
If I start a search and then click stop, or even exit my browser (I'm thinking that should kill my request, is that right?), Tomcat continues to occupy the cpu for minutes (I'm guessing 3-4).
I don't know what Tomcat is doing, or how to find out. Can somebody offer a suggestion for me?
    Dev server:
    Xeon 1.7 GHz
    1,024 Mb RAM
    Windows2000
    Tomcat 4.1.24
    Prod server:
    PII 399 MHz
    1, 024 Mb RAM
    WindowsXP
    Tomcat 4.1.27 as a service

Gotta use a profiler like JProbe or OptimizeIt to find
out, plus a packet sniffer to monitor the network
    traffic.Uh. A profiler?
After a little bit of searching, I see that there are a few open source profilers available. Any input on them? Cougaar, JMemProf, JAMon... are they all pretty much the same?

  • Custom Help Message Text on user/login.jsp

    Hello,
I am trying to get some custom text to appear in the help box associated with the user/login.jsp page. I did some digging around in the docs and looked at the includes/helpServer.jsp file. I found the <$WSHOME>/help/html/help/en_US/com/waveset/msgcat/help/user/login-help.html file.
I replaced this file with our own custom version. I can not get our custom version to load. The old version still continues to load. I cleared out all the cache options I could find in the debug pages, then rebooted the server. Still no luck. Does anyone know how I can change the contents of this help message?
    Thanks,
    Jim

Here's a solution that works too. Application server is: Tomcat 5.0.28. Identity Manger 7.0 Running on a Windows 2003 server and a SQL Server dbms.
This is not the ideal solution because upgrades (i.e. new releases from Sun) will over write the changes.
This example over writes the HELP button content on the End User Menu.
This approach should work for all App servers however the folder structure will vary.
    1. Stop Tomcat
    2. Clear cache. (i.e. delete the localhost folder and its contents found in C:\tomcat\work\Catalina\localhost).
    3. Create the following folder structure C:\com\waveset\msgcat\help\user
    4. Copy the original html file from: C:\tomcat\webapps\wavex\help\html\help\en_US\com\waveset\msgcat\help\user to C:\com\waveset\msgcat\help\user. In this example main-help.html is the file being copied.
    5. Make your changes to C:\com\waveset\msgcat\help\user\main-help.html
    6. Open C:\tomcat\webapps\wavex\WEB-INF\lib\idm.jar with WinZip and add file C:\com\waveset\msgcat\help\user\main-help.html.
    7. Close WinZip
7b. If you want you can check your results.
    7c. Open C:\tomcat\webapps\wavex\WEB-INF\lib\idm.jar using WinZip.
7d. Find main-help.html and open it using your favorite web browser to see if your changes have been included.
7e. Hope it worked for you.
    8. Start Tomcat
    9. Test Change
9a. Log into Identity Manger's end user interface.
9b. Click the HELP button to see your changes.
    Good Luck.

  • Multi-user login screen help

I am looking into an application front end with NI hardware controlling a temp process. The fun thing is the multi-user login that controls the screens you can access. Does anyone know of a good way to accomplish this?

I've attached it below. Here is the description from the webpage:
This VI uses Key Down events to control the user login process. The user must enter the username and password using only upper and lowercase letters. If the user enters other characters, the VI displays an error message and discards the event. The VI also converts all uppercase letters to lowercase before verifying the username and password in a subVI. "Number of loops" displays the number of times the While Loop iterates, which is the number of times an event occurs on the front panel.

  • NEW USER LOGIN...HELP!

I made a new user login, and I need to put iTunes on this new one. Will it let me use the same software twice? I have to reupload my library because its been moved to some new harddrive space we added. Will this complicate things? THANKS.

I believe you can have iTunes in more than one user account. You can even share music within both accounts.

  • Late 2008 Macbook Freezes 5 Minutes into use with newly upgraded Mavericks, works on safe mode; help troubleshooting?

Hi, I have a late 2008 Macbook - I upgraded it from Leopard to Snow Leopard a year ago and things ran relatively smoothly. A friend suggested I try Mavericks after I have been getting a few error messages with snow leopard and was forced to hard restart. I upgraded to Mavericks last night - the installation went smoothly, however Macbook has since begun freezing every time I am using it for more than 5 minutes. I checked some other discussion forums and I wasn't having the same problems as others - Chrome is updated; I don't use Apple Mail; don't have a lot of third party software (I think). I downloaded EtreCheck and ran on both safe mode and normal mode - things seemed relatively normal except I hadn't backed up my time machine (woops). I saw that Sophos was running a lot on start up - I don't use it so I uninstalled it using the developers instructions (Library/Sophos/Uninstall_Sophos) and than trashed the Launch Daemons that were com.sophos...
So far nothing has solved my problem. My macbook will start in both modes - but only functions in safe mode. It will run smoothly in normal mode for 5 minutes or so - and I am honestly not sure what triggers the freeze. I copied numerous log files to see if someone could help identify the problem (they run through 2 hard shut downs and finally a restart in safe mode) as well as the safe mode EtreCheck report. I can get a non-safe mode EtreCheck if that will be helpful, just let me know.
Anyone have any advice on what my problem is? Thanks!

    Hi Carolyn,
Went through step 1 - macbook froze. Went through the second internet plugins trashing - and it froze. It's almost as if it begins processing super slow at some point and then the cursor goes beach ball and eventually I can't do anything. I did another EtraCheck run when I had it started in normal after I erased the internet plugins and I also have the log files that start exactly when it froze up again. See Below:

  • Apex is too slow to login and run report

    Hello Expert,
I am working to fix a problem with APEX is extremely slow to login. It might take 3 to 5 min for the login to show up and it takes forever to load the reports on the screeen that has 1000's of rows. And when it comes to clik on the button to move from tabs in the application, or select a drop down menu, it takes forever.
can any one suggest a solution to this problem? Is anyone experience this at their work environment and what can I do? If I am working on the same application in Development Environment, it is a little bit faster, it dosn't take that long as it takes in production.
Your suggestions is much needed and appreciated.

Without knowing what version of the database & APEX it is kinda hard to even fathom where your issue is...
Are you having issues just getting a user logged in or is it a combination of logging in then running the report?
Have you tried running the query OUTSIDE APEX in TOAD or SQL Developer?
Can you post some information on what the query looks like?  Maybe even post a sample of the code on the Hosted Oracle Instance?

  • Limit a Windows 7 machine to 1 user login at a time

I've searched everywhere for a solution to this but have not found anything outside of restarting the machine.
I need to limit a Windows 7 computer to only allow one user logged in at a time. This machine has applications only allow one user to run them at a time. So if a user locks this machine and walks off and if the next user switches user and logs in, none of
the programs will work because the first user's session is now suspended.
Is there anything that will kick the suspended user off? So if a user forgets to log out and the screen is locked, the second user's login would force the first user to log off?

I know this was 1.5 year ago, but people search the web for these solutions for years and for years these solutions continue to help others, but not when people are so very much OFF TRACK with what the OP asked for. It shouldn't surprise me, but it is astounding
at how people do not communicate well and instead of reading what the OP asked for carefully the proposed answer here does NOT address the OP's question... it got the "BREEZE BY ANSWER".
NOW - TO the OP Cherickson HERE's the BEST answer I've been able to determine on my OWN since ALLLLLLLLL of the other posts online I read ALSO were answered OFF TOPIC:
DISABLE FAST USER SWITCHING (speaking from a Windows 7 environment)
Here's the GPO to do it (Open Group Policy Management Editor on a DOMAIN or Active Directory server):
Default Domain Policy [ServerNameHere] > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Logon > Hide entry points for Fast User Switching
Set Hide entry points for Fast User Switching to Enabled.
FOR non-DOMAIN non-Group-Policy controlled PC's use "Local Group Policy Editor" via gpedit.msc
(NOT NOT NOT "Local Security Policy" via secpol.msc) and visit:
Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Logon > Hide entry points for Fast User Switching
Set Hide entry points for Fast User Switching to Enabled.
Now, to be "EXACTING" here, this does not "PREVENT" multiple users from logging into the same PC at one time "per say", but it ends up having that effect on "PEOPLE" because "PEOPLE" are very predictable
in a network environment and they aren't worried about saving PC resources for themselves or others... they just use the PC.
Setting Hide entry points for Fast User Switching to Enabled REMOVES the option for users to "SWITCH USER" while they are logged into Windows (fat client) and it also removes the "SWITCH USER" from the Welcome/Logon screen,
thereby forcing them to "LOG OFF" themselves (or whomever is logged in) manually and thereby then they are presented with an option to Log In using their own Windows user account. This is great, because it keeps the PC resources for just 1 logged
in user at a time instead of you being called to examine a slow PC only to find that the lazy users out there left 2 or 3 or MORE users logged in at once despite being told 100 times or more that they shouldn't do that. :) EXPERIENCE??? :)
Now, if you have an advanced user, doing things with other users logging in the background of their own user session (IE: RUN-AS on some shortcut lets say) then they should still be able to do all that jazz too even though Fast User Switching is turned off.....
but this is usually pretty unlikely and usually that would be someone amongst the IT staff.
    So to summarize:
Set policy "Hide entry points for Fast User Switching" to Enabled in order to have only 1 user logged on any given PC "at one time" - IE: Prevent concurrent Windows user Logins
NOW.... I elect MYSELF and MY ANSWER as BEST ANSWER in this THREAD, because its the ONLY ANSWER that addresses the OP's request.
