Software to help troubleshoot slow machine?

I have a MBP with 16GB RAM, SSD and 2.7Ghz Core i7.  I don't know why but after a few hours of the computer running, it will start struggling to respond.  Flipping between browser tabs gets slow and when I swipe across my Dock icons, they are slow to catch up on animation.
I don't see anything in particular with Activity Monitor.  Is there any other software that can help pinpoint what is drawing on resources so much?

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
          View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Need help troubleshooting slow startup after installing apps

I'm relatively new to OSX (though not new to computer administration and Unix/Linux) and I need some guidance troubleshooting my slow booting Macbook.
I've got a vanilla Macbook that can installed with 10.5.5 and I've since done the upgrade to 10.5.6. I didn't have any problems until I started installing some heavier apps like the Adobe CS3 suite and MS Office (I know, I should get iLife, but I have an available license of Office.)
Since doing these installs, it has noticeably, but not drastically, slowed the start-up time of my mac. The slow down starts in the blue screen part of startup and is most noticeable as the dock and the menus load.
(I've read about Searchlight indexing, which would make sense since these are both big suites, but it's had several hours of run time to do this and many reboots and it's still a problem.)
I have my suspicions that Adobe is mostly the culprit here, but I'm not sure where to look for start-up logs and configuration info. Are there any apps out there like Start Up Control Panel (www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) for OSX? Are there any places that would be a good place to start looking? I basically want to try to make sure that only the necessary stuff is loading at start-up and and none of that "helper app" crap that was so common in windows environments.

  • Help troubleshooting slow user login

for the past week i've been having a problem with slower then normal login to my user account. (the top menu bar loads in slices very slowly)
login in safe mode and to another user account is much faster so i can narrow it to something in my start-up items/extensions.
what's the best way to figure out the problem: should i be disabling the login items in my user account control panel or should i be looking for something in the user/library folder?
btw, i repaired disk permission and deleted cache files using first macjanitor (which seemed to hang so i force quit) but then i followed up with onyx.

    Jimyyz,
Most times that I've seen this, the problem was caused by a bad cache file in the main Library folder. Look in /Library/Caches for all cache files associated with this account (most of these will have the account's UID appended to the name: "501," 502," "503," etc.). If you don't know the account's UID, check that user's "properties" in Netinfo Manager.
    Good luck!

  • Need help troubleshooting slow Tomcat

I have a servlet that takes a keyword and passes it to a second servlet, who searches a database.
Everything is working fine on the development server. It takes a few seconds to search the database, but that is acceptable.
I have moved everything to the production server, and there, it takes minutes to do the same search. I've set the virtual memory to be the same as the dev server (3024 mb) but that is not being used anyway.
If I start a search and then click stop, or even exit my browser (I'm thinking that should kill my request, is that right?), Tomcat continues to occupy the cpu for minutes (I'm guessing 3-4).
I don't know what Tomcat is doing, or how to find out. Can somebody offer a suggestion for me?
    Dev server:
    Xeon 1.7 GHz
    1,024 Mb RAM
    Windows2000
    Tomcat 4.1.24
    Prod server:
    PII 399 MHz
    1, 024 Mb RAM
    WindowsXP
    Tomcat 4.1.27 as a service

Gotta use a profiler like JProbe or OptimizeIt to find
out, plus a packet sniffer to monitor the network
    traffic.Uh. A profiler?
After a little bit of searching, I see that there are a few open source profilers available. Any input on them? Cougaar, JMemProf, JAMon... are they all pretty much the same?

  • Help with Time Machine Backups not working..

Let me preface this by saying I have spent the last day scouring the internet for solutions to my problem. I have tried every option that I have run across and have had no luck in resolving my problem. As a last resort, I'm turning here in hopes that you can be of help.
I have a 2012 Macbook Pro running Moutain Lion.  I use an external HD for my time machine backups.  I am having an issue with Time Machine not functioning.  The initial error message I receive when I attempt to use TM to backup is:  "Time machine couldn't coplete the backup to Rick's backup disk". "Unable to complete backup. an error occurred while creating the backup folder".
I searched the forums and net and found several things to do to try and resolve this issue.  My computer will freeze out and not let me erase, or re-partition the the hard drive, so I switched it over to an older macbook of my girlfriends and am successfully able to erase, and re-partition the drive (using disk utility) as suggested by several forum postings I have read.  I am able to run disk verify and disk repair and both say the disk is "ok" with no issues.  The moment the erase and partition is done, her computer prompts a message : "Would you like to use this disk for Time Machine Backups" which tells me it is working properly.  When I move it back to my macbook pro and attempt to run TM backup, it will now work and copy about 10g of my 120g before shutting down with this error message:
"Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "Rick's Backup Disk".  An error occurred while copying files. The problem may be temporary. If the problem persists, use disk utility to repair your backup disk."
If i attempt to re-run TM at that point, I get the original error message:
"Time machine couldn't coplete the backup to Rick's backup disk". "Unable to complete backup. an error occurred while creating the backup folder".
If I move the TM back to my Girlfriends computer and attempt to run TM, it will function properly and backup her entire harddrive.  When I erase and try again on mine, I always end up back with the same issues.  It's clearly something in my macbook that is screwing it up.  Can anyone please offer some help! I'd be much appreciative.

See #C10 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting

Not one of Apple's more informative messages.
There's a problem with a file on your system.  See #C3 in the above link. It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it.    If that doesn't help, post back with details, including all the messages, what you've done, and the results.

  • New to Mac, Help with Time Machine! Partition External HDD or not?

Hey Guys I'm a new mac user
I need help with  time machine
I wanted to know how time machine works and what all does it back up?
I have 2 hard drives one is of 1TB and one is of 320gb
In the 1TB hard drive i store all my music videos and work stuff it is windows formatted
The 320gb hard drive is mac formatted and I was thinking of making a partition on it one with 250gb for time machine and the remaining 70 gb for mac softwares and files. The ssd of my mac has a capacity of 256gb. I have read for time machine you need at least 2x the space of your ssd on your external hard drive but i don't understand if my ssd is only 256 and can store files worth 256gb why do i need double the space? Secondly if I choose to use the complete 320 gb for time machine will that be okay or even if i choose to partition it to 250gb for time machine will that be fine too? Or will I need to format my 1TB hard disk out of which currently only 300 gb is empty and partition that to 500 gb for time machine?
I'm really confused every tells me to use time machine but do I need it? And what does it exactly do?
Your input will be really appreciate thanks

The reason that you want a partition (or drive) of 2-3 times the size of your boot drive for Time Machine is so that you can keep backups further back than just the current boot drive state - for that you'd need to make a clone of the drive rather than using Time Machine (see -> http://pondini.org/TM/Clones.html).
For more information for backups in general, see -> Most commonly used backup methods.
Note that you can't use Time Machine to backup a Windows partition.
    Good luck,

  • I downloaded a trial version and it deleted ALL of my Adobe software. Help!!

I downloaded a trial version of the new CS because my (purchased) CS6 wouldn't open some files from a friend. It WIPED OUT ALL of my Adobe software - EVEN on my Time Machine backups that go back 3 years. The application icon is greyed out and has a circle with a line through it. A client in 2008 purchased CS6 with 5 keys and I bought one of the key codes. NO, I don't have that key. I back up my computer every 2 weeks, why would I ever think I couldn't access MY software? It's been fine for the last seven years...until I downloaded the new trial version. I am soooooooo angry - and screwed. I have 100's of files that I can't open! HELP!!

While I do not know what you can do beyond downloading and reinstalling, it is not at all clear from your explanation what software version you are talking about.  You talk as if CS6 was purchased 6 or 7 years ago, but CS6 wasn't released/sold until 2012.
If you registered the software then you might be able to find the serial number(s) you will need thru your Adobe account online, and that may help you identify which versions you own.  Aside from registering your software, you should keep your own records of your serial numbers because they are your only way of activating applications.

  • Understanding codecs + video editing on slow machine

    Hi!
I have really slow machine (Celeron 900). Editing Full HD, even with AVID DNxHD is a real pain. Export takes much time too. I decided to use offline mode trick discribed here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WK0sX75c4E (don't be scared with a cat in the begining ). And I started to play around with encoding options in Media Encoder to get best proxy videos. It's not simple and I can't decide what settings are right for me. Can you help me?
And, in general, where can I find detailed info about different codecs, their options and usage? I really need someone to explain all this stuff.
    Hope on your advice!

Have you looked into CineForm's NeoScene? http://cineform.com/products/neoscene
When AVCHD was young, and many had less powerful machines, it was very good for them. I never used it, so cannot directly comment.
    Might be worth a look.
    Good luck,

Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
    Wait a few minutes
Push the power cord back into the back of the Time Capsule
See if the Time Capsule will back up now

  • Upgraded to OS X Yosemite - Slow machine

I upgraded my MacBook Pro on friday the 17. October to OS Yosemite, but the last thing I did was to make a backup by Time-Machine.
The first experience with OS X Yosemite was my machine was very very slow. The startup and every command or startup of an application was so slow that it was unusable. SO I started to look into forums here on Apple and other sites around internet. Many things where written about slow machines (and many surely worked fine but who writes a comment - Works fine?). Some indications where FileVault=on (when no SSD disc) and many indications on graphics (external screens). All this might be true but I also experienced when I used OS X Yosemite all applications running on a single screen on my local MacBook Pro (2008 model previously happy running Maverick), it seemed OK but still some slower than Maverick. When I started several screens and put my applications into these several screens the machine was very much slowed down. Even so I must admit I lost patience on OS X Yosemite as there was to much OS hanging (cursor loops) and seems to be locked into kernel processes so it was very slowed down. So I restored Maverick, and now it is fine.
I hope this can help to solve the "slow down" issues on OS X Yosemite so we again can upgrade these fine machines :-)
    Good luck everyone!

I have stated before it was´t necessary as reinstallation of OS X Yosemite was doing the job. But after a week usage it started to do its delays and problems again, so I started your process of "solving Yosemite memory leaks and CPU usage". Then My Yosemite was O´Kai again so I´m happy. But I wonder for how long now?
    Anyway Thnx for your guidance!

  • How can I change the password in the iBook donated to our nonprofit.  No password was given with the iBook?  We need to put in printer and other software.  Help, we can use the laptop without changing the password.

How can we change the password in the iBook donated to our nonprofit?  No password was given with the iBook and every time we try to install items, the password window pops up.  We need to put in printer and other software.  Help! We can use the laptop without changing the password.

If you did not get an OS X install-restore DVD with the computer you may need
to buy one from somewhere, and you may be lucky to get a retail OS X 10.5.x
version. The original grey-label install set of software and OS X it shipped with
likely would be an older system than Leopard 10.5. Last versions of G4 Mac, &
G5, shipped with a Tiger 10.4 system; so did early Intel-based Mac. Grey discs
which accompanied other computer build models generally do not interchange.
The last OS X version a PowerPC architecture can use, if supported, is 10.5.8.
A PPC processor at 867MHz & faster should be able to run OS X 10.5 Leopard.
{With the correct disc installer, you can use it to change a password and other
    things including re-install, and perform disk utility functions, etc.}
There is a chance you may be able to get a white-label Replacement 10.4 DVD
or Replacement 10.5 DVD from AppleCare or the online Apple Store (800myapple)
from a Mac OS X system specialist; these have been available yet hard to get
as not all persons involved with them seem to know if they still exist until someone
is asking. These aren't retail stock, are special discs for computers who could use
a system later than original old discs; these are complete install discs not for one
specific series of Mac. Generally they'd work in supported PowerPC G4/G5; but
do not replace specialized original install DVD, such as an early Intel mac requires.
You'd need to have a serial number of the computer, and a method of payment
when seeking some replacement system media from Applecare or Apple sales
and these discs are not available in a retail store. The original Retail discs are
labeled differently and shipped in a retail box with a big X on the front. Other
sources for retail 10.4 Tiger or 10.5 Leopard may be online via amazon sellers
or computer resellers who handle repaired Macs. Avoid mystery grey label ones
that were intended to be sold and kept with their original computer kits.
    Good luck!

Unplug any peripherals you have except your keyboard, reboot, and check activity monitor for apps.  Keep running apps to a minimum to find the App causing the issue.
