Limit a Windows 7 machine to 1 user login at a time

I've searched everywhere for a solution to this but have not found anything outside of restarting the machine.
I need to limit a Windows 7 computer to only allow one user logged in at a time. This machine has applications only allow one user to run them at a time. So if a user locks this machine and walks off and if the next user switches user and logs in, none of
the programs will work because the first user's session is now suspended.
Is there anything that will kick the suspended user off? So if a user forgets to log out and the screen is locked, the second user's login would force the first user to log off?

I know this was 1.5 year ago, but people search the web for these solutions for years and for years these solutions continue to help others, but not when people are so very much OFF TRACK with what the OP asked for. It shouldn't surprise me, but it is astounding
at how people do not communicate well and instead of reading what the OP asked for carefully the proposed answer here does NOT address the OP's question... it got the "BREEZE BY ANSWER".
NOW - TO the OP Cherickson HERE's the BEST answer I've been able to determine on my OWN since ALLLLLLLLL of the other posts online I read ALSO were answered OFF TOPIC:
DISABLE FAST USER SWITCHING (speaking from a Windows 7 environment)
Here's the GPO to do it (Open Group Policy Management Editor on a DOMAIN or Active Directory server):
Default Domain Policy [ServerNameHere] > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Logon > Hide entry points for Fast User Switching
Set Hide entry points for Fast User Switching to Enabled.
FOR non-DOMAIN non-Group-Policy controlled PC's use "Local Group Policy Editor" via gpedit.msc
(NOT NOT NOT "Local Security Policy" via secpol.msc) and visit:
Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Logon > Hide entry points for Fast User Switching
Set Hide entry points for Fast User Switching to Enabled.
Now, to be "EXACTING" here, this does not "PREVENT" multiple users from logging into the same PC at one time "per say", but it ends up having that effect on "PEOPLE" because "PEOPLE" are very predictable
in a network environment and they aren't worried about saving PC resources for themselves or others... they just use the PC.
Setting Hide entry points for Fast User Switching to Enabled REMOVES the option for users to "SWITCH USER" while they are logged into Windows (fat client) and it also removes the "SWITCH USER" from the Welcome/Logon screen,
thereby forcing them to "LOG OFF" themselves (or whomever is logged in) manually and thereby then they are presented with an option to Log In using their own Windows user account. This is great, because it keeps the PC resources for just 1 logged
in user at a time instead of you being called to examine a slow PC only to find that the lazy users out there left 2 or 3 or MORE users logged in at once despite being told 100 times or more that they shouldn't do that. :) EXPERIENCE??? :)
Now, if you have an advanced user, doing things with other users logging in the background of their own user session (IE: RUN-AS on some shortcut lets say) then they should still be able to do all that jazz too even though Fast User Switching is turned off.....
but this is usually pretty unlikely and usually that would be someone amongst the IT staff.
So to summarize:
Set policy "Hide entry points for Fast User Switching" to Enabled in order to have only 1 user logged on any given PC "at one time" - IE: Prevent concurrent Windows user Logins
NOW.... I elect MYSELF and MY ANSWER as BEST ANSWER in this THREAD, because its the ONLY ANSWER that addresses the OP's request.

  • How to restore from time machine for another user login

I use time machine to back my computer which has multiple user login.
First I set up time machine backup using User A.   I checked that User B files in the hard disk is also backed up, and I can restore using User B login.
Then I changed the hard disk today and all users I need to recreate again.
After recreating users, I found that User A can restore files from time machine backup.
However, files originally under User B cannot be restored using either User A and User B.  The error message is
"The folder “Documents” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents."
    Anyone can help?

Not sure if this is related enough, but I just wrestled trying to restore from time machine too, trying to reinstall 10.5.8 after putting a new HD in my MBP, 2006 vintage.
That took sooooo long to get back to where I was before swapping disks; what did the trick was ordering a free copy of Snow Leopard install disk (free due to Apple trying to push people from idisk to icloud) which was rushed FedEx (yay) and which allowed me to access Time Machine where my ancient original OSX install disk had not.
And all it took was 2 weeks of cursing!

  • How do we find out how many concurrent users login at peak time?

    Hi Frienz
PLease let me know if there is any database trigger that we can keep to monitor this?
    Poonam Sachdeva

You can also use audit features of the database to audit user connections/disconnections
and write the query to get what you need.
Or you can also use with 9i/10g a LOGON/LOGOFF trigger to audit session connection and disconnection in a audit table and then write the query on this audit table to analyze the maximum number of connections.

  • User login mistakes

Hi all: We run both eDirectory and AD. Our workstations run Windows 7. All our users login using the Novell client as we only use AD for access to our EHR software/servers which requires AD. The problem I am seeing over and over is users attempting to lo in with the Microsoft login rather than the Novell login. Most of the time the user is greeting with the properly Novell login screen, but on occasion they get the MS login screen and have to click the "Novell Login" link to switch.
Without removing the Novell client altogether, is there a way to make the Novell login ALWAYS be default?

This has worked for me. I changed these three settings to avoid the same situation you are having. I also have a mixed environment. In the client properties under the advanced login tab change these three settings
Computer only login: set to “on” This allows the option to login locally to be available.
Computer only login after failed Novell login: set to “never” this keeps the workstation from defaulting back to Microsoft if the user puts in the wrong credentials. With the default setting of automatic I found this will cause the Microsoft login to appear if wrong Novell credentials are put in. Having the option above on allows a computer only option if wanted even if the Novell login fails. Setting this to never causes an incorrect login to go back to the user being presented the Novell login again and not default to Microsoft.
Computer only login default: set to “never” if left on automatic in my experience is you almost always get Microsoft login first.
Novell Login “on” Make sure this option is on. most likely is.

  • After migrating a windows 7 machine using ADMT Group policy shows the the computer is from the new domain but user is from old domain

We have migrated machines using ADMT tool but we have found some window 7 machines Group policy issues.  We see that the computer GP is getting from the new domain but the users profile still has the old domain GP information.  Any help on
removing the old GP objects and forcing the new domain User policy would be great.  We have tried the basic troubleshooting gpupdate /force reboot etc.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    Sorry for the delayed response.
First, please verify whether these domain users you mentioned belong to old domain or new domain.
If they belong to old domain the GP is right with no problem. If they belong to new, try following suggestions.
Please test these steps in one of the problematic computer. If it worked, then go on for others.
To avoid unexpected problems, please backup your register keys before following steps:
Open regedit.exe, and delete following keys:
HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft Key (looks like a folder).
    HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft Key.
    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Group Policy Objects Key.
    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies key
    Exit the registry and restart.
    Note: HKLM = HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE & HKCU = HKEY_CURRENT_USER

  • 3 users, 3 iPods, 1 Windows XP machine

    Hi,
I'm sure this question has been answered a thousand times but I couldn't find it in the faq.
If I install 1 copy of iTunes on 1 Windows machine, will each user be able to create their own iTunes library and use their own iPod? Basically, I have a family of iPods users and want to be sure I can setup one machine for all of them.
    Thanks for your time.
    Bruce

There are basically two ways of using multiple iPods on a computer and these involve:
    a) Sharing a single iTunes library and user account.
    b) Creating multiple user accounts and having separate libraries.
    Sharing a Library
If you want to share the one library, you can set either or all of the iPods so that they only get updated with only certain playlists (you can update from more than one if you wish):
Loading songs onto iPod automatically - Windows
Choosing the update option "Sync Music - Selected playlists" allows you to create a playlist specifically for the iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used some other time if you choose. You can read more about playlists at these links:
iTunes: Creating playlists of your favorite songs
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
Or you can choose to update any or all of the iPods manually and just drag whatever content you want to them: Managing content manually on iPod
Loading the iPod shuffle differs slightly but it can still be used with the others, for details have a look at this page:
Loading songs onto iPod shuffle - Windows
    Separate User Accounts
Another option is to create a separate User account for each person on your PC or Mac. Different accounts by definition would give you completely separate libraries. Each account has it's own iTunes folder, Library and iTunes Music folder and you load it with CDs etc just as you did with your original one. The iPod can be set to update however the owner chooses, sync all, manual or sync specific playlists
You can read about Windows user accounts here:

  • Windows Vista Machine Can No Longer Connect to Mac Following Upgrade

Before: Windows Vista machine with 6 drive letters mapped to the 6 hard drives in my Mac Pro running 10.5.8.
After: Mac Pro upgraded to 10.6. Now the Vista machine cannot connect to any of the drive letters, nor can it open the Mac Pro by browsing -- the Mac Pro shows up, but cannot be opened. A second Windows machine also cannot open any shares on the Mac Pro.
I have checked all of the settings in Network on the Mac Pro and they look fine. Does anyone have any ideas for things to check?

I was able to see the other Windows XP computer and begin to connect. I was then presented with a login screen. I tried using the usual user name and password - no luck. I then formatted the user name as as follows:
    user name: computer name\user name
    password: as normal
And it worked. Specifically in my case:
    user: cwy-pln2152\administrator
    password: planning
This is what worked for me your mileage may vary.

  • Printing from Windows 8 to a shared printer on a Windows 7 machine

WE have a a user that has a laser printer on A windows 7 machine that others in the office can access EXCEPT the one person on a Windows 8 machine. We have tried everything, but cannot get her to print to this printer. Says it cannot be found. What does
Windows 8 need to see a printer on a Win 7 workstation. She does have access to network printers and her own.
    Thanks.

We have the same kind of problem but a bit different.
Dell Printer (used for years shared on a network) was moved to our Windows 7 machine plugged in via USB.  We only use a plain workgroup with no Domain as we also have Macs on the network.
I have Macs using shared printer, a Windows XP using the shared printer, and even Windows 7 under Parallels on the Macs using the shared printer no problem.
I had the lone Windows 8 laptop using the shared printer but then it just stopped working.  So I deleted it and now when I try to add it is want credentials and none work.  It will not connect to the shared printer on the Windows 7 machine.
I have Windows 7 (which also has a couple shared drives that do work) set for No Homegroup and No Password for sharing - pretty much open as we are behind a Cisco Firewall to the outside.  No firewalls on the pcs.
Not sure where to go from here...

  • How do I disable the hardware acceleration in Flash player on a Windows XP machine remotely?

How do I disable the hardware acceleration in Flash player on a Windows XP machine remotely?
I have a few hundred computers running Adobe Flash Player.
The operation system is Windows XP.
They are Compaq 6005 desktop PC’s, with an inbuilt ATI radeon HD 4200 video card.
We have a persistent issue where viewing a flash video (e.g. something on youtube) causes the video card driver to crash.  You are left with no video signal to the monitor.  Audio continues and the computer still responds to commands. This only happens when watching flash video.
    We have tried:
    Updating flash plugin (numerous versions)
Updating the video card drivers (we have tried the last three video card driver versions, including the HP drivers and ATI drivers)
Updating the browsers (this problem happens with IE8/9 and Firefox10/11/12)
There seems to be two ways to work round this issue.  One is to disable the video acceleration in the ‘troubleshoot’ section in the advanced part of the display settings area in windows.  The other way is to start a flash video, right click, go to ‘settings’ and untick the box marked ‘Enable Hardware Acceleration’.
Doing either of these things allows the user to view flash videos with no apparent issues.
Is there a way to disable the hardware acceleration in Flash without visiting the PC?  Perhaps an undocumented option in the mms.cfg file? I understand that you can use an option to skip the video card check, and so force hardware acceleration on, can you do the opposite?
    Thanks in advance
    Daniel.

    Hi.
I have had over 200 views, and no suggestions as to how this could be fixed.
I have also posted in the general flash forum, that thread has fewer views.
If I should put this question in a different forum please let me know which one.
If what I am asking is not possible is there a mechanism for escalating this issue or requesting a feature for the next version of flash?
    Thanks.

  • I desperately need to access my User Library folder in Time Machine (Lion so = not visible).

Hi. I installed Lion a few months ago and got a new external drive to back up Time Machine.
Nobody told me the User Library would be made hidden in the new OS. I have been backing up regularly in the belief that all my work, settings and so on was safe.
Yesterday my iMac (27" 2.8 Ghz Core it with 4 gib memory) suddenly went mad. Message saying finder had quit whilst trying to restore windows. Desktop was flashing, no icons clickable, no external disks readable. Could access some progs and terminal, but nothing else. Could not get into the history folder to trash various plists and so on as the folder is hidden and the alt Go wouldn't work. The Finder just wouldn't do anything.
I have sorted it out BUT I have lost my address book entries, my browser booksmarks, my desktop shortcuts and my iCal entries. I need to access my User Library on my Time Machine. Is there a way?
I cannot believe I have been religiously backing up my stuff but Apple has made it so I can't access my backup of one of the most important folders on my Time Machine???
Is there anyway of getting into this from Terminal or something? I will never be able to get back all the bookmarks and stuff I've been researching for years. I have it backed up on two different hard drives, both of which have 'invisible' library folders. I have make the folder visible now, for future backups, but it's after the horse has bolted. I am furious, and just feel like bursting into tears because of all the time it's going to take me to get all my work back. I can't tell you how stupid this was, Apple.
If someone could help I'd be really grateful. I've got older backups but they are so old they won't get back my recent stuff.
    Thanks.

    select Finder
hole option key and select Go in the menu
    Select Library
    Enter Time Machine
You should be seeing all the versions of you Library folder.

Like I said, the documents make it to the print queue, but won't actually print.

I had exactly the same issue as you when I wanted to print from my iMac to a printer that was attached to a Windows 7 machine.
I found the solution at an Apple Support page, located at "http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3049".
What really solved my problem was the introduction of the user PASSWORD in the address line, like this:
    smb://user:password@workgroup/server/sharename
Read the Apple Support page I mentioned carefully to better understand what you will be doing.
    I hope this helps you.
