HELP! Trying to network Macs with Windows PC is making me crazy.

I've been trying without success to network my Macs with a PC running Windows XP Home for longer than I care to think about. Here's the set-up: iMac G4 and PC are connected to Linksys router via ethernet. iBook and Mac Mini connect to internet via Linksys wireless access point connected to router. iMac is connected to an Epson photo printer; PC is connected to an HP laser printer. The Macs and the PC all happily share DSL internet access through the router/access point, but I've been unable to set up a true network that would allow for file- and printer-sharing. There's no problem getting the Macs to make nice (no suprise there) but getting the Macs and the PC to do so is another matter. The iMac and PC can ping each other (albeit only when I turn off the firewall in my PC security program) but do not "see" each other in their respective network set-up utilities. Nor have I been able to connect one to the other via IP address. I've found and followed instructions from a variety of sources on setting up a cross-platform network, all to no avail.
I'd love to get the whole set-up working as is, but would also add or switch hardware if it would make things easier. Among other things, I've wondered whether it would help any to add wireless cards to the iMac and PC for an all wireless set-up, or to get a print server, or to substitute an Airport for the Linksys gizmos. Any suggestions or advice will be profoundly appreciated.
iMac G4; iBook G4; Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Thanks for your reply and the terrific lucid instructions you've posted on your website. Yes, all the computers are on the same subnet. I followed your instructions for printing from the Mac to the PC and vice versa but unfortunately it's not working in either direction. On the PC, when I put in the URL of the printer connected to my iMac, I get an error message saying, "Windows cannot connect to the printer. Either the printer name was typed incorrectly [it was not] or the specified printer has lost its connection to the server." On the Mac, on putting in the account name and password for my administrator account on the PC, I get an error no. 256 that says, "Unable to connect to server with the provided password and user name."
I guess this goes back to the PC's and the iMac's not being able to "see" each other on the network. I have no idea why that is or how to fix it.
Thanks again for your help.

  • Trying to Boot Camp with Windows 8.1 Problem

I'm trying to Boot Camp my Mac with Windows 8.1 and have been getting this problem:
"The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved."
I did a search for help with this topic and found 100s of threads with the same problem. However, from what I read it seemed that the problem is that there wasn't enough continuous space to create the partition. I'm skeptical to believe the same is the case with my problem, and if it is then I'm quite disappointed with Apple.
The reason being that I bought and opened this computer literally yesterday (Nov 24th, 2014) it is the latest model MBP 15'' 2.8 Ghz and 16GB of RAM, and 1 TB SSD. I find it hard to believe that in 980 GB of un-used space, boot camp can not find 95 GB (what I'm trying to partition) that are continuous.
I saw that the most common solution to this was doing the whole back up, delete and restore method. Are there any simpler methods that do not require an external hard drive (as I don't currently have one).
Thank you very much in advance to anyone who can help.

Oddly enough, this is what seemed to do the trick,  I've now got a fully working Windows 8.1 partition running on my rMBP:
    Solution:
Finally got this working, thanks to a person named "turbostar" over on discussions.apple.com:
Re-run Boot Camp Assistant to remove the Windows partition and restore the full Mac HD as a single partition.
Run a PRAM reset (restart, while screen is still black, hold down ⌘+Option+P+R and keep them pressed until you hear the startup sound a second time).
Open disk utility and repair permissions on the Macintosh HD partition. TWICE.
    Start Boot Camp Assistant again.
Seems hokey. With those instructions I thought I would also have to stand on one foot, point to my nose, rub my belly, and hope for rain. But it did end up working.

  • Can I Network My Mac With Windows XP Pro With This Setup?

Hey Folks. I have an iBook G4, OSX 10.4.7 and I want to network and or remote access with a Windows XP Pro laptop. In the household, we have DSL with SBC Global. We have a Linksys router. I have an Airport Extreme wifi card, the PC is hooked directly via cable into the Linksys. The router is connected to the DSL modem. Since I get online wirelessly and the PC gets on via the cable and not wireless, can we still do web access hookup, file sharing, remote access? How do we configure both machines to do this? Will we be able to do application/desktop sharing live in real time? Thanks for your insight and help steve
    iBook G4 933 640 RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Hi Rick. I want to experiment with networking the Mac to the PC on the internet and in the house. We both have MS Office, so I would assume we can do application sharing, work on the same documents in real time live, the same way that 2 computers play games and such. In other words, I don't want to have to hook an Ethernet cable to the Mac and PC to network together. Want to do it via the net. I did download the Remote Access Windows app from Mactopia today. Ready for the sophisticated methods now, (I think, hah)
Although it has gotten much easier to network Macs to PC's since Panther and Tiger, getting the configuration and hookups to work together perfectly is another challenge. It's tricky and frustrating when you seem to have put it all together, and then BANG!, it doesn't work. sigh I have tried the Ethernet connection method and that took forever to get that working, but it finally did ok. Also in the Sharing window under System Prefs, there are a lot of options to tweak as well.
I'll check out the link you recommended. Keep ya posted. Thanks steve

  • Mac OS 10.4 Network problems with windows

    Hello.
After recently updating my powerful mac g4 to mac os 10.4 a lot of problems arose :
i cannot connect to windows shares anymore (smb server reports somekind of problem in the console)
2008-09-26 20:56:24.769 Finder[198] CFLog (22): Cannot find function pointer CIFSURLMounterFactory for factory 92D4EFEF-F5AA-11D5-A1EE-003065A0E6DE in CFBundle/CFPlugIn 0x5140de0 </System/Library/Filesystems/URLMount/smb.URLMounter> (bundle, not loaded)
of course, absolutely no error appears if i connect to a server, everything is neatly hidden in the console.
and, some kind of mdimportserver keeps on crashing every 10 to 15 seconds

I've spent HOURS studying these problems, looks like tiger has indeed something with windows and refuses to connect for some reason. I managed to obtain a connection in the terminal with smbclient but i cannot mount the remonte drive on the local system. NONE of the mentioned solutions don't work (keychanin resetting, restarting, software updates, etc.)
As for the mdimportserver well, it just slows my computer down.
Any Apple experts out there, please offer somekind of solution not necessarily to me but to ALL macintosh users out there that work in a windows dominated environment...

Have you done the Software Updates to 10.4.11? some of these may have been fixed already.

  • Please help... Problems with windows and bluetooth

    Hi,
My computer has been working without a hitch for the past 3 months but just recently i bought a bluetooth mouse to use with mac and windows. But then I noticed that there are some major issues now.
I have a Bluetooth devices icon in my control panel (actually two of them, i dont know how that happened) but in the device manager, there is no apple bluetooth kicker. No bluetooth hub at all. So I dont know if the driver actually installed or not.
Then, I try booting back up the macintosh drivers for windows cd to use the uninstall, but it can't uninstall. It only installs. I tried uninstalling through add or remove programs and it still just installs over again.
Please, somebody help me. I'm about to rip my MBP a new one.
    Thanks,
    Phong

Installed new boot camp drivers. Works perfectly now.

  • HP Envy 700-430qe DT CTO - - - Trying to dual boot with Windows 7

                                                                                                       HELP HELP HELP
I know how to set up double boot for several different HP computers, based mostly from what I have learned in this great forum, but this one has me stumped.
I have been trying to install Windows 7 on this computer to double boot with Windows 8.1. I have tried to set the bios up correctly, enabled legacy, disabled secure boot, disabled fast boot. I booted under UEFI  to get in to GPT mode, still no luck at all.
The installation always goes all the way through the first 4 steps and through most of the 5th.  After the reboot in the 5th step, it stops and can not go any further. A message appears without any error code.
I think it may be a problem in this computers UEIF  settings, but I do not know if anymore of them to try.
I can use all the help you all can offer.
    Thank, Brad
PS, If we ever get this to work, then I will have to ask you where to find drivers for this model, if they exist!

    Hi Brad,
According to the information that you posted you have a W8 delivered PC.
If the graphics card in your PC can run in legacy mode then you should be OK.
I suggest that you use a separate HP for W7 as you will probably run into partition placement issues when you try to install W7 to the same HD. Installation to the same HD is not impossible but you will have to remove some partitions such as the recovery partition and then resize the "C" partition to make room for W7. You should be able to use Disk Management to delete partitions and resize the "C" partition.
Be sure to create the external HP recovery media as it will be needed. Backup your data to separate external media. You should also consider installing the HP diagnostics to an external flash drive.
Boot in the BIOS and set the BIOS to legacy mode and fast boot off.  Save the changes on exit.
Now boot up the external recovery media (don't select the EFI media if shown) and reload your PC with W8.
If your PC boots up and runs OK then you should be good to load W7.
If you are using a separate HD for W7 then unplug the original HD.  If you don't then W7 will install a boot manager to the primary HD.

  • Networking issues with Windows SBS Server 2003

I have 3 G5 running on a recently installed 10.4.8, they were all previously running 10.3.9. They all connect to a network drive with folders that have color labels on them (only 2 blue and green). In 10.3.9 the labels were fine, now when the machine connects to the server the labels do not refresh utill you have been throught them and selected them all. I have tried delabeling and then relabeling them in 10.4 but it does not help. I have also tried it on another site and it does exactly the same. It also does not seem to matter what protcol you use to connect to the server (AFP, SMB, TCP/IP).
Anyone come across this before and know any fixes?

I dont really have much to offer here except that we use afp with our SBS server and this hasnt come up... on any of our 10.4.x machines.

  • Trying to Get Started With Windows 8.1

I'm not a troll, I'm just a crotchety, oldster trying to figure out how to get Windows 8.1 to fit my workflow.  I've been using Windows 7 for the last bunch of years, so I'm a bit late to the Windows 8 party, but I'm building a new PC and figured I'd
move to 8.1 instead of continuing with 7...
I liked the XP interface - extremely easy to find the application I wanted because things were hierarchical. Windows 7 was more bothersome, but I got used to it.  So far, after 3 days, I'm still struggling with Windows 8.1, so I figure I'll get some
    guidance here...
I did a rummage, but didn't find much on how I should change my workflow to make it easier in 8.1.  In Windows 7 I had a desktop with icons for less frequently used applications, a taskbar with frequently used applications pinned, and a start menu (3rd
party) with EVERYTHING organized hierarchically so it was easy to find what I need. I'm trying to use 8.1 without adding a bunch of 3rd party stuff to make it look more like older interfaces that were organized differently.
In Windows 8, I appear to have the equivalent of THREE desktops, all different, none with any hierarchical organization.
I'm not seeing the advantage of the Start screen...  Are the boxes, of whatever size, just the equivalent of icons or do they do something better?  And I only appear to be able to organize horizontally, which means I'm limited to six named groups.
On the Apps screen, I already have a large number of my apps, despite deleting a bunch of the "modern" things.  They exceed the width of the 24" monitor I'm using for setup.  There doesn't seem to be any hierarchy there, either.
So, for example, for Office I have at least 12 icons/apps/whatevers.  Including the ones I CARE about, like Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook that I use regularly.  AND a bunch of OTHER stuff I VERY rarely use like Clip Organizer, and Groove,
and Uploader, and so on.  But, I can't take them off the screen if I ever want to get at them, right?  'Cause there's no start menu any more...
I also have a lot of stuff for handling e-books - Calibre, a Kindle Reader, OverDrive, Adobe Digital Additionsl, a Nook Reader, a couple 3M cloud things, and so on.  On the Apps page they're all OVER the place instead of being grouped together (which at
least the Office stuff is).  And there doesn't appear to be a way to have them be together and hierarchical so I can quickly find Calibre or ADE quickly, and only have to see the Kindle reader or Nook reader when I want them...  So how do folks organize
their screens so they don't have to wade through hundreds of things you only need once a year to get to the ones you use a couple times a month or once a week?
I also have a bunch of stuff that's just a single application, like Syncback, but instead of just being "Syncback", there' ANOTHER line that tells me who the creator is - I don't care that 2BrightSparks made it, I just want to be able to find it when
I need it - once in a while.
The desktop is as it's always been, but I don't want 2 or 300  icons on there for a bunch of stuff I rarely use.  The constantly used stuff will be pinned to the taskbar, and the less frequently can be icons, but where do I do to organize all the
    other stuff?
So, in my ignorance - is there a way to have 8.1 support MY workflow, or if not, how do other people organize things to make it as easy as possible to find what you need without having to wade through a ton of stuff you don't?  And have it all fit on the
    screen.
I found the Name Group thing for the Start screen, but I can only group applications aross the screen?  Which limits me to 6 groups.  How do I configure that screen so I can have multiple groups in a column?
And the Apps screen.  How do I organize things hierarchically so I can have the Office stuff I care about visible, with the rest not clogging up space but available for drilling down?
I currently have the system boot to the desktop, which is most like Windows 7, but without a start menu to group things, I'd need a lot of icons for the applications I use, and a lot MORE for the stuff I rarely use.  Cumbersome.
How are other people organizing in 8.1?

I have a Dell U3014 as well as a couple of older Dells turned up sideways as "ears".
Other than supplying the desktop "theme" (if you can call a complete lack of style along with a fair bit of inconsistency a "theme"), the OS really shouldn't be causing you to have a washed-out desktop experience.  That's more a
matter of your display driver not really doing its job.  What video card do you have?
FYI, one of the reasons I like Aero Glass for Win 8.1 (a 3rd party package) is that it allows me to make the desktop more pleasant to use and helps set the client areas (i.e., where work gets done) apart from the window chrome.
From what I can see, the color-management logic in Windows 8.1 is essentially unchanged from what it was in Windows 7.  That there has been NO progress in this area is really a disappointment.  It's an area where Microsoft has again just stopped
    trying to make improvements.
If it's at all interesting to you, here's a screen grab of a REALLY cluttered up desktop.  I don't normally work this way; this was an exercise to see how much I could get running.  I finally gave up starting more stuff as I grew tired
and it just kept working fine...

  • Can I dual boot Mac with Windows?

    Hi all,
At the moment I have Windows 7 32 bit OS. I've always wanted either an iMac, or atleast the Mac OS. I've recently found out it's only £20.99, and i've always thought it was a lot more than that, which is a bargain! The only thing which is stopping me from buying it at the moment, is that certain programs which I use reguarlarly won't work on Mac, and I really need those programs. Is their anyway I could dual-boot it with Windows 7, so I give Windows 7 say only 8gb of my hard drive, and Mac the rest?
I will appreciate any answers, and thanks for tackling this for me!

Yes Macs changed to Intel Processors in about 2007. You can upgrade as far as Lion with a Core2Duel Processor or better. CoreDuos will only update as far as Snow Leopard.
    Hope this helps

    Hello,
I am guessing there was a network share listed in the screen image that was edited out, correct?
First, try running the FixIt program from Microsoft Knowledgebase Article #910336, "You receive a "0x80070002" or "0x80070003" error code after you download an update from Windows Upda...".
If that does not solve the problem, try deleting the network share on the computer, then recreating it using 'Advanced Sharing'.  Does that make any difference?
