Help understanding Library norm files

Can someone please explain how the library files work. I am having some difficulty understanding how to correct a problem of how to deal with very slow file sets when I want to change from the General set (say) to Corporate or Wedding.
I am using Encore DVD 2.0, Windows XP (SP2) and have a Pentium 4 3GHz.
I looked through the forum and saw a post about changing the norm files in the Docs and Settings/etc/Library files (for the problem I am having with slow files and crashing) and when I checked I only have norm files in General, Technology and Travel. When I try to change to Corporate or Wedding in Encore the program just stops running and I have to close it in the Task Manager.
I am not sure if this is relevant - I live in the UK and originally set up Encore to work in PAL. I am working through Classroom In a Book which has all its files in NTSC - so I am setting up all my projects in NTSC for the book. I notice that there are two sets of library files in Program Files - PAL and NTSC - is this of any relevance and is this why I am having problems?
Mike

I think I've worked it out now, thanks.
I deleted all the .norm files (with Encore closed) and then closed the PC down completely and started over. With Encore open again I then systematically clicked on each library set and - like magic all the .norm files came back.
I assume the .norm files are created when you first click on the library set and then forever after they are there - something must have gone wrong somewhere because originally they were working fine. Now they are working fine again.
Now my only question is - if I have created a bunch of .norm files when working in a NTSC project - will they still work fine in a PAL project or will I have to recreate them?

  • Need help understanding Time Capsule file structure and how to get it back

I have the original Time Capsule on which I backup both my Mac Pro and my wife’s Macbook. When Snow Leopard came out, I successfully used the ‘Restore from Time Machine’ feature on my Mac Pro so I know it has worked. However, my wife’s MacBook harddrive died the other day and I was trying to do the ‘Restore from Time Machine’ and all it would find was a backup from April (when I put her in a new larger drive). Time Machine would not find any backup files newer that April. She stated that she had seen the the Time Machine backup notices regularly and as recent as the day the haddrive died (Nov. 23) so I figured that I should have no problem. Here is what I have found in my trouble shooting and what leads to my questions below.
This is the file structure I found: (note that our ID’s are ‘Denise’ and ‘John’)
*Time Capsule* (the drive as listed in my Finder window sidebar under ‘shared’)
    >Folder called ‘Time Capsule’ (when logged in as either ‘Denise’ or ‘John’)
    >>Denise Sparsebundle
    >>>Backup of Denise’s iBook (mounted image)
    >>>>Folder called ‘Backups.backupdb’
    >>>>>Folder called ‘Denise’s iBook
    >>>>>>Single folder with old April backup (not the right files)
    >>John Sparsebundle
    >>>Backup of John’s Mac Pro (mounted image)
    >>>>Folder called ‘Backups.backupdb’
    >>>>>Folder called ‘John’s Mac Pro’
    >>>>>>Folders containing all my backup files
    >Folder Called ‘Denise’ (if logged as ‘Denise’)
    >>Denise’s Sparsebundle (a disk image)
    >>>Backup of Denise iBook (the mounted image. Name from old machine)
    >>>>Backups.Backupdb
    >>>>>Denise’s iBook (Contains the backup I need)
    >Folder Called ‘John’ (if logged in as ‘John’)
    >> (empty)
For some reason, my wife’s backup files are stored within a folder located at the top level of the Time Capsule drive called ‘Denise’, however, mine are within a folder called ‘Time Capsule’ which is at the same level as the ‘Denise’ folder.
For some reason, when trying to use Time Machine to recover, it bypasses the top level ‘Denise’ folder which contains the correct files and goes into the ‘Time Capsule’ folder and finds the outdated backup files.
I would assume that both my backup files and my wife’s should be at the same level of the Time Capsule.
I was eventually able to use Migration Assistant to recover the files after installing a fresh OS and mounting the correct Sparsebundle image.
So, my question, how do I get this fixed so that if I have to recover a drive with Time Capsule, it will find the correct files.
Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance for any help.

What I was trying to determine is why different backups for one particular machine are located at different file structure levels on my Time Capsule and why the most resent one for that machine is at a different level that for my other machine. Also, what is the correct level that both machines backups should be at.
well John, first can you clarify if you are on 10.4.8 as your profile suggests ? if so, i'm wondering how you can use TM at all because TM was introduced with Leo. if you're not on 10.4.8, please update your profile. if you could, please also indicate details of your machine such as available RAM, processor, etc.
second, what OS is your wife's machine running ?
third, i frankly don't know too much about TM's file structure or if there indeed is such a thing as the correct one. however, i do know that it is best to leave TM to do its thing (as long as it's working). FWIW, though off-topic, you may want to have a look at this read for further information.
last but not least, i see TM backups to my TC only as a part of my backup strategy. the backbone of my strategy is to create bootable clone of my startup disk(s) using e.g. Carbon Copy Cloner on a regular basis. while TM is capable of doing a full system restore, i don't trust it as much as a working clone. i use TM to retrieve a file i accidentally trashed a week ago but you cannot boot from a TM backup if your startup disk goes belly up.
If I have missed this information in either the FAQs or the Troubleshooting article, I would greatly appreciate being pointed to it .
i expect you didn't miss anything and i'm sorry you didn't find any help there. perhaps if Pondini (author of the FAQ and troubleshooting user tips) reads this thread, you will get the necessary advice on the file structure and more besides.
    good luck to you !

  • Help with Library Backup files

Hi,  I'm trying to get some of the clutter off my HD, so I got OmniDiskSweeper.  One thing I found, in my User->Library->Application Support folder, my MobileSync folder is 3.6 GB, and if I go into Backup, the Backup Library folder is 8 GB.
Can I delete some of these flies in these folders?  I'm not even sure what MobileSync is, I thought my iPhone synced through iTunes.  Then in the Backup folder, some of these backups go back to 2009 (I'm thinking if I could delete these, then just do a Full Disk backup right away).
If I can delete files, what is the best way to do it?  (I know sometimes just going into the folder and moving to the trash can cause problems, as the app search for the file.
    Thanks for help

Here's another file size question: in my HD folder, I found a hidden folder marked "private".  In it is a folder that says "var" and inside it is a folder named "vm" that is 6.2 GB, and contains a whole bunch of files named "swapfile1" (1-26) each of which is 256 mb.  What is this for and can it be deleted?
    thanks again for help

Holding down the shift key while iTunes is opening. That will bring up the 'choose iTunes library' dialog. Select 'Choose LIbrary' from the choices and navigate to your music folder and iTunes music folder.

  • ITunes library.itl file is locked?? please help

I downloaded iTunes and tried to open it and it says that the library.itl file is locked on a locked disc or I do not have write permission for this file.....very confused can someone please help me.....Thanx

first check to see if the itunes .itl library file, or any folders in the folder heirarchy above it have somehow been set to "read only". if they have, try switching that off.
What are the iTunes Library files?
if no joy with that, see:

  • Damaged iTunes Library.itl file, anyway to recover?? pls help!

    Hi there,
My harddrive has gone through some bad blocks and subsequently had to be replaced. I'm now going through and trying to salvage all that I can off the old HD, however it looks like one of the corrupted/damaged files is the one i need most; the "iTunes Library.itl" and the "iTunes Music Library.xml" files which are found in the iTunes folder. I organise a lot of music via playlists and I believe that these two files are the two that hold all the playlist data.
Apart from data recovery centers, is there any other possible way that I could recover these two files? Seems crazy that I would spend $800 on recovering about 50mb, however they are incredibly important!
    Hope someone can help,
    cheers,

    Help!!

    Hello Whit1erj,
It sounds like you are not able to access your iTunes library.  With the error message you are receiving, you will want to first locate the iTunes Library.itl file.  These are the default locations for this file on a Windows computer, but if you dont find them here, you may need to search for the file:
    Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\
    Windows Vista: C:\Users\username\Music\iTunes\
    Windows 7: C:\Users\username\My Music\iTunes\
    Windows 8: C:\Users\username\My Music\iTunes\
You can find the full article about iTunes file locations here:
Where are my iTunes files located?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1391
Once you locate the iTunes Library.itl file, you can make iTunes point to it using these steps:
Steps to create or choose a different iTunes Library file
If iTunes is running, quit iTunes.
If you are using Windows, hold down the Shift key and from the Start menu and choose All Programs > iTunes > iTunes.
You should see one of the following screens:
Then you can select Choose Library and navigate to the location of the iTunes Library.itl file.  You can find the full article here:

Have tried to connect and sync my iphone 4 to my computer in itunes but this message keeps coming up The itunes Library .itl file is locked on a locked disk. or you do not have write permission for this file.

I have tried both suggestions, unfortunately neither fixed this for me. Hoping there's another possible fix. Thanks in advance.

  • I've just opened iTunes on my Mac with an error "The iTunes Library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file.". I created a shirred library so that all users on my Mac can access the same library. Help?

I have just opened ITunes on my Mac and the following error occurred "The iTunes Library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file.". When I setup my Mac I created a shared user area to contain my ITunes library so that I could share it with another user logged onto my Mac. However the error above gives me the impression that the library file is locked... I've checked and it does not seem to be locked under the "get info" fie information. Has anyone come across this before and found a solution?

You also need to make sure you have both read and write permission for the file, or for the whole iTunes folder for that matter.  That's also done in Get Info for the file or folder concerned.
Read the part about changing permissions on the iTunes folder in: https://discussions.apple.com/message/11583914

  • Help please. Lost itunes library.xml file

    Hello,
I have windows 7 and have failed in my attempts to locate my itunes library xml file. I think I lost it when I transferred music from one computer to the next. Online I have seen a tutorial on how to find it, user - my music - itunes. However it's not there. I was trying to sync my itunes music to android, but cannot do so unless I have the xml file.  Please note, i am not a computer savvy guy. please don't make it to technical.
    Thanks
    - Anthony

I already have itunes installed and all my music, playlists and podcasts which work fine, but the media cannot be transferred onto my phone via Isyncr due to not having the itunes library.xml file.  You are saying all I have to do is get the itl file from my old computer and save it onto my new one. then re-download itunes and it should work?
Edit: I found my old computer and still cannot locate .xml or itl file.
Looked in users/music/itunes music. and nothing saying xml or itl is there.
