Help Upgading to xserve

Hi Guys.
I need to upgrade a powermac G4 running 10.3 Server to a G5 xserve environment. Below is the current and new setup:
*Current setup:*
PowerMac G4 running 10.3 Server running AFP and Open Directory from Server Admin.
There are 2 disks in the machine : 40GB drive which is the boot disk and has 8 folders currently being shared via AFP. The second disk is 60GB and has 6 folders currently being shared.
*New Setup*
G5 Xserve with 2 x 250GB drives mirrored RAID running 10.5 Server.
Here are my questions:
1. I need to migrate all info for workgroup manager from the powermac to the xserve - what is the easiest way to do this?
2. I need to combine the shared folders from the 40GB and 60GB drive to the 250GB drive whilst preserving the file permissions - how can this be done?
Any help is much appreciated.

I'm just theorizing here, but I can see two possible paths.
1) set the Xserve up as an Open directory replica, then promote it to master. Use rsync to sync the data -it will preserve permissions, but you'll need. To reset the shares.
2) use ast to clone the old OS drive, then perform an upgrade install. This should preserve the accounts, shares and data from the first drive but you'll still need to rsync the data off the second drive.

  • Help! My Xserve is not working!!!

I had an G5 Xserve running 10.4.6 with an XRAD connected to it, this server ran my network home folders
I ran a software update and now its hosed. I booted the xserve in target mode and ran the combo updater for 10.4.7
hoping it would fix the issue, but to no avail.
I am unable to ssh & tel-net into the box, I have gotten ARD to work after 40min of waiting but then it is painfully slow, to where the finder doesn't seem to be running and no disks have been mounted to the desktop and no clock is running, its just the desktop and the menubar
Any help would be appreciated. since i have about 30 users who cant log in to do their work today.

    serviced and now working

  • Really Need Help Please! Xserve XRAID Volume Keeps Unmounting

I recently had a 14 Drive Apple RAID drop a drive and I immediately replaced the bad drive with a new drive so it could rebuild. Drives 1-7 are RAID5 handled by Upper Controller and Drives 8-14 are RAID5 handled by the lower controller. The Xserve is running Leopard Server 10.5.8.
I noticed the next day before the rebuild was almost done that the Volume had unmounted and didn't think much of it until the RAID rebuilt successfully and I rebooted everything to sync everything back. I thought all was good until the Volume on drives 1-7 started to unmount by itself. It will not stay up for more than 15 minutes. If I reboot the RAID or Xserve it always comes back.
I tried different cables, different ports on the Fibre controller, swaped different RAID Controller cards and even moved all the 7 drives into a different RAID chassis and the problem always follows the 7 drives in question, which is drives 1-7. I've just finished a parity rebuild, which did not help. I'm running another parity rebuild right now.
I would copy the data off onto the RAID which is identical but the Volume that the data is on won't stay mounted long enough to start and substantial copying of data.
I've looked at the console logs and RAID Admin logs, which didn't help much. I'm really at wits end and do not know what to do at this point. I believe the issues is not card, cable or chassis related but part of the 7 drives but don't know how to fix this issue. This problem only started after one of the drives had failed in drives 1-7.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you!

    Hi,
Couple of quick questions for you.
    1) What drives do you have in the Xserve RAID?
    2) What error does RAID Admin pop up? Is it Controller 1 Communications Failure?
    3) If you look at the Console does if have an error in there Flushing FS disk buffer returned 0x5?
    All the best

  • Help on upgrading Xserve storage

Hi, I have an Intel Xserve with the Apple built in RAID card. I currently have 3x750GB hard drives running as a RAID 5 (the most capacity offered at the time...I think 2007..maybe early 08').
I would like to replace the 3 750GB drives with 2 TB drives. I am willing to buy the Apple 2 TB drive modules for $549 each, but it mentions compatibility only with the 09' Xserves. Surely earlier Intel Xserves can use these? It would be monumentally stupid if we were forever stuck with 750GB drives.
Secondly, I would *prefer* to buy WD RE4 Enterprise 2 TB drives with double the cache (64MB) and add them to an Apple Drive Module. Is it possible to buy blank Apple Drive Modules, or do you have to buy the $99 160GB module and manually swap drives. The $99 modules with the superior WD drives would still be less than buying the $549 Apple 2 TB modules.
Lastly, has anybody here upgraded to Snow Leopard Server? This particular Xserve is still running Tiger server and I would like to upgrade everything (OS and Storage) at once. Just curious if Snow Leopard Server runs well with the Apple RAID card.
Sorry for all the questions but Apple has done a shockingly poor job of making information and hardware available to Xserve owners who would like to upgrade their storage after a couple of years (which means approx. every single Xserve owner(!!))
    thanks in advance,
    Greg

I don't usually bother upgrading the internal stuff; no vendor will tend to make that a particularly easy approach, save for purchasing upgrades from the vendor. (It's usually possible to do the internal disk storage upgrades with some digging and some testing, but that can toss stuff like vendor-supplied SMART out of the equation.)
The testing and the support is the cost here. That's what the vendor-supplied hardware gets you. If you're rolling your own (and I've done that on many occasions), then you own testing and integration and support.
If you have the rack space available and an open bus slot, a PCI-X or PCIe card and an external disk shelf (with or without RAID) can be a reasonable investment. This can be via SAS/SATA controller and a shelf, or FC SAN connection with an external storage controller and a shelf. With an external shelf, you get large(r) external storage, and you can purchase an integrated package providing host support and hardware and (if needed) host software.

  • Teacher - needs help with G5 Xserve

I'm at my wits end... I'm hoping someone can assist. Our school's NEW G5 is acting wonky ever since a kindergartner ripped the plug off the back of the server. (Yeah, I know)
Anyway. Apple Support helped with getting everyone back on line by making me re-create new home directories for everyone. But ever since then, a great many strange things have been happening but the most annoying are the following:
    - Random freezes - no students can sign-on or off because I think the server crashes or doesn't startup after the weekend or overnight when all the machines are shutdown.
    - I can't create a mountable sharepoint because of a Directory Services Error (There's no number associated with the error).
I'm the only remotely technical person here on campus and that's not saying much. So, if someone can suggest anything I can do to try to fix this without spending tons of money or using a lot of jargon, I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanks in advance.

None of this really strikes me initially as hardware. The Apple response was a shotgun approach, that basically means the tech didn't have a clue. Reinstalling is a last resort, not a first resort. If you've been "freaking out" already, I guarantee you won't enjoy setting a headless (no monitor) xserver up. I don't have experience with LDAP, but I could see it possibly being a problem.
As you've found out, Apple's documentation isn't too great. If you're going to manage this thing going forward, you should hit your bosses up for some books. With all due respect, you've got a bunch to learn.
If you go into the System Preferences, and click on the energy settings, on one of the sheets I believe you can turn sleeping on/off. I have it off on all of my machines( ~20 ). The machines have maintenance tasks to do, and I want access whenever, so I see no need of them sleeping; ESPECIALLY a server. Sleeping has had issues for some people waking up, you can search these boards and probably find many messages about it, so IMO, why bother?
No computer, especially a server, can "just work" unless someone skilled is just working it and people don't unplug it. Apple tries to make it as simple as possible, but there's a reason that computer-centric environments have skilled support staff.
I just read the initial messages of your link. It sounds like something is becoming a "super" process, which is an uncontrollable process. OSX is VERY weak in dealing with these. They'll hang a GUI or commandline shutdown. I've had to powerbutton my xserver a few times for these. They're usually caused by hardware driver problems, not the hardware itself, but error checking in the software that deals with the hardware, the driver. Usually, there are telltale, less serious errors in the logs. I check my logs daily on important machines and funky machines to find and fix these "minor" messages before all heck breaks loose.
Another possibility would be a runaway process that's gobbling up all of the machine's resources. The lights on the front of the xserver would be lit like an Xmas tree if this is the case. An ssh login could take several minutes in this case.
LDAP corruption is a very real possibility. The server, and other machines, if the server is the master, reference LDAP so often, that the files were probably open when the plug was pulled. Since they reference it so often, any damage to the file would affect a fair amount of the machine's work. Once again, this kind of stuff should show up in the logs.

  • Help needed - Basic XSERVE config

    Hi everybody,
we just bought an XSERVE 2.8 + F.C. Raid, a Nortel 5510 switch, a stupid 50$ ethernet and wi-fi router and 5 Macpros 2.8 quad. I'm quite a newbie in network administration but i have some questions that need answers... self learning not always works! I hope that some of you can help me.
My first goal is to set up a lan between the server and the macpros using the switch. Easy: my router shares internet connection to the switch and all the macs (xserve too) are connected to the switch via dual channel cat6 ethernet cables. DHCP is provided by the router. This configuration works well, all the machines can exchange their stuff very quick.
First question: is there any reason to use the Xserve as DHCP server ? I mean... the small network I need will work better, faster or whatever?
My second goal is to create network users in order to control accesses and permissions and let my editors switch between macpros without wasting their own settings, desktops...
Second question: in order to create these users, do I need to create a Directory? Open or active? How to do that ? Once I create all the users on the server, how can I share them to the clients?
My third goal is to install Final Cut Server, any suggestion in this issue is well accepted!
Thanks in advance for your reply!
    Piero

all the macs (xserve too) are connected to the switch via dual channel cat6 ethernet cables
    'dual' ethernet cables?
Are you using link aggregation (aka trunking), or did you just plug in every cable you could and hoped for the best?
If you're not using link aggregation you should only use one link between each machine and the switch.
is there any reason to use the Xserve as DHCP server ?
For the most part, no. For most users it makes no difference. There are some elements of the Mac DHCP server that might be useful (or harder to implement in the router), such as the ability to associate a specific IP address to a specific machine (so it always gets the same IP address), but for most people that's not a big deal.
in order to create these users, do I need to create a Directory?
Yes, that's what a directory is.
    Open or active?
Open. Active Directory is Microsoft's Windows directory service.
    How to do that ?
Use Server Admin on the server to start the Open Directory server, then use Workgroup Manager to manage your user accounts.
Once I create all the users on the server, how can I share them to the clients?
On each client you use /Applications/Utilities/Directory Utility to bind each client to the server (via the LDAP option).

  • Need help setting up XServe properly

I'm new to administrating our G4 XServe and am updating our server to 10.5 this weekend. I've got a few questions as I've previously installed 10.4 and had some problems with the way I did things. We're a small company with only about 12-15 people who mainly need one place to store and access the same files. We also run a FileMaker server, and I'm planning on using the Time Machine Server to backup the XServe and a few computers on the network to an attached Drobo.
Originally we had several different users set up on the XServe, which caused major issues with permissions of files and folders in a shared environment. User 1 creates folder and works on files in folder and when user 2 goes to work on those files, he can't save. In order to simplify, when I installed 10.4, I only made 2 users: Admin and User. Unfortunately many people have logged in and worked under both user names and again the permissions are a mess and unmanagable. What would be the best way for me to set this up to do the things I've outlined above without the permissions nightmare?
Do I create one user? Do I need multiple users to backup multiple machines to the Time Machine Server?
    Thanks,
    Michael

Hey, this should not really be a problem. You can create as many users as you like.
You should create group in WGM called staff or something like that
In the file sharing section, you should create a shared folder, then apply a ACL for your users group will whatever access you want.
Once that is done, copy all your old files into that share point then run propogate permissions, which will repair all the permissions going forward

  • XServe Upgrade failed -- system no longer accessable

I was upgading our XServe G5 running 10.4.11 to Leopard using a remote install (no video card). I accessed the system using ARD and ran the install, which of course reformats the drive. When it finished I got a pop-up window saying the installation failed. I clicked ok (my only option) and that is the last I have seen of the machine. It has disappeared from the network. Our router doesn't have the mac address in its arp table.
It looks like the only potential method of recovery is connect via the serial port and see what commands are available to try and resurrect this thing from the dead.
    Has anyone seen this before?
    Thanks

Just to Follow-up how the system was fixed.
    1. Attached a keyboard to the system
    2. Brought a old G4 laptop out of retirement and connected it the XServe G5 firewire 400 port (So that the correct processor dependent packages were picked up in the installation)
    3. Power cycled the Xserve and held down the "t" key during the boot.
    4. Went through the installation process using the firewire as the target disk.
    5. After the reboot, connected to the ethernet with a cross-over (turned out that the wrong ethernet got configured -- of course the XServe had the interfaces configured for the G4 laptop)
    6. Ran ARD in bonjour mode to find the self-assigned IP address and configured the laptop ethernet for that network.
    7. Configured the static IP address on the XServe - connected it back on the network
    8. Ran the leopard updates.
In all a very ugly experience, but I put this out so that others don't go through the same.

  • Will Xserve work without a rack?

Before I get all these rants about how stupid this question is let me preface it with a short story:
The owner of my company wants a new server. He asked me which I thought was better: tower or rack mount. I said that the PowerMac doesn't have the service warranty we would expect from a server, and as a desktop, is not really designed to run 24/7 the same way Xserve is. So we configured a new Xserve and it is in the process of being made. He then asked me the question: "will it work without a rack?" Being honest, I said "It would power on, but it's not recommended to run that way because it can't cool properly and it's not physically secure."
Now he tells me we aren't ordering a rack for this $6000 server. Can you please list all the reasons this is NOT going to work, so I can go back to him with a huge rebuttal? It just doesn't seem logical to me to not spend a few hundred dollars to properly secure this very expensive piece of equipment, and I don't have any fight left in me to come up with all the answers on my own.
    PowerBook G4 12" 1.5GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   5th Gen iPod Video, 1st Gen iPod Nano

    He then asked me
the question: "will it work without a rack?" Being
honest, I said "It would power on, but it's not
recommended to run that way because it can't cool
properly and it's not physically secure."
Speaking from my limited experience (18 months) with our Xserve G5: The Xserve does not need top and bottom venting; it cools front to back. A risk, though, will be that it gets shoved back against a wall and thus has poor airflow out the back, and you don't realize until you have done it what a mess of cables comes out the back and why you need the cable management arm (as aggravating as it is when you first use one) to manage the cables.
The Xserve is heavy. It's difficult to walk away with one. The enclosure lock will still work without a rack, but it's not real security anyway, just protection against the drives being bumped out by accident. But an unracked Xserve will be prone to injury and falling off a table, etc. They are BIG and HEAVY. The Intel Xserve is even longer than the Xserve G5 (look at the dimensions).
If the concern is the expense, well, you can build your own rack rather cheaply. I suggest Starcase (http://www.starcase.com), which lets you build a rack of any dimensions - you will probably want at least a 3U or 4U rack for your Xserve - 1U for the Xserve, 1U for a UPS (APC has a nice 1U 1000W UPS and a same-size 750W UPS), 1U for a tape drive and autoloader (you will need to back up all that data), and you might need another few rack units of height. The nice thing about the Starcase rack solution is that, as your rack height needs expand, you can simply get the four corner posts of greater height and grow your rack. Starcase also has side panels, top panels, etc. For custom-height solutions (rather than their pre-bundled standard sizes), see:
    http://www.starcase.com/customsteel_rackstore.htm
Check the Starcase prices so you can present your boss with a true picture of the cost. They are built like a tank. I STRONGLY advise that you put your Xserve in a rack; otherwise, it will be very difficult to service when the time comes - and you WILL need service, eventually.
However, note that the Xserve is NOISY. If the Xserve is going to be in an office environment, you will need an acoustical enclosure, such as the XRack Pro. See:
    http://www.xrackpro.com/
Very nice, very quiet, and a bit pricy.
    Hope this helps.

  • Help! RAID causing kernel panics

Help! My Xserve RAID seems to be behind a bunch of kernel panics on my server. Whenever I try to access the volume, I get a kernel panic stating "HFS: truncate file didn't". This happened yesterday too, and I spent 5 hours running disk utility on the volume, which came up clean, and it hasn't fixed the error. Do I need to delete the array and restore the data? I'd rather not... Any ideas are appreciated.

  • How to use the same Windows-Profile for over 700 Users?

    Dear admins,
i´d like to use one (1!) shared windows profile to serv over 700 user-accounts in our school. But there is a little complication in the WGM.
I just tried to check all users and entered the path of the shared profile right in the windows tab.
    For example \\Server\Profiles\oneforallprofile
Unfortunately the WGM put the user´s shortname behind this path.
    For example: \\Server\Profiles\oneforallprofile\mistersmith
    or \\Server\Profiles\oneforallprofile\sallymiller and so on.
By changing this preference one by one it works, but of course i need a solution to do that for all users.
Does anyone know how to set one Profile for all students?
    Thanks for your help!

XServe G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   Educational System Administrator

    Hello Prasad,
Most likely the user km_admin still has system principal roles assigned, even though you removed the Super Admin role, you should check that this user doesn't have any other admin roles, otherwise it will be considered a System Principal user and will therefore still have access to all content. For more information see http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/en/19/56f28fbd4e11d5993b00508b6b8b11/frameset.htm
Try creating a new user with just read access to the content and you should see that it will not be able to make any changes etc.

  • PHP Apache2 10.4 Server ****

    Hello,
I really hope somebody can help me with this because its killing me on a Friday afternoon. I have been stuck all day on this.
    I have:
    Apache2.0.55 installed in /opt/apache2
    PHP 4.4.1 installed in /opt/php4
    SVN 1.3 installed in /opt/svn
Yesterday, all of this was working fine with apache2 configured with only 1 VirtualHost defined in /opt/apache2/conf/VSites.conf that is included in the main httpd.conf file (located in the same directory).
    NameVirtualHost *:80
    # This is the main Virtual Host for sfinteractive.
    <VirtualHost *:80>
    ServerAdmin [email protected]
    DocumentRoot /Volumes/Vsites/Interactive

    ErrorLog /var/opt/apache2/logs/sfinteractive-error_log
    CustomLog /var/opt/apache2/logs/sfinteractive-access_log common
    </VirtualHost>
Today, I added a couple on new VirtualHosts and restarted apache and that was the end of everything good. Now, when I run the command
    /opt/apache2/sbin/apachectl start
there is no error or confirmation message or anything returned. If I run the command top, there is only 1 httpd process running. Which means that all child threads have died.
So checking in the CrashReporter log, I find this (plus a lot more):

So this tells me that apache2 is crashing on startup because of libphp4.so. I recompiled php, I recompiled apache and still the same results.
    Can anybody please help me?
    XServe G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)
      Mac OS X (10.4.2)
      Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Good Point, I knew I was leaving something out of my post...its late and I am really frustrated.
    /opt/apache2/sbin/apachectl configtest returns Syntax OK
    /opt/apache2/sbin/httpd -S returns
    VirtualHost configuration:
    wildcard NameVirtualHosts and default servers:
    *:80 is a NameVirtualHost
    default server sfinteractive (/opt/apache2/conf/VSites.conf:8)
    port 80 namevhost sfinteractive (/opt/apache2/conf/VSites.conf:8)
    Syntax OK
I really believe that the problem lies in the load module stage, particularly when apache tries to load libphp4.so based on the CrashReporter log. I wish I could read registers and know exactly what that memory dump says, but I sleep through that part of Operarting Systems...
I was putting a bunch of new VHosts into VSites.conf all at once. I knew exactly what the settings needed to be because I am migrating them from an old host to this new XServe. When I restarted apache2, everything just sort of exploded.
As far as I know, nothing else changed on the sever between last night and today to have caused this issue.
Thanks so far though. Keep'em coming!

  • Monitor in iWS6.0sp4

    Hi,
The monitor function in my webserver does not work. It is set to Activate/Statistics Polling. I get an error message - Could not get Statistics, Servber to be monitored is not currently running or Stats are disabled.
Stats are not disabled and server is running. Help!
    Thanks

The Xserver in SRSS 4.1 supports only resizes, not rotates. 'xrandr' should tell you this -- it should show the available resize dimensions, and also report that no rotations are supported.

  • 10.4.9 as Domain Controller fails daily for Windows clients

I have a 10.4.9 Open Directory Master server which also serves as a PDC for Windows XP clients. Windows clients can log in and get roaming profiles with shared homes for Mac and Windows environments. This all works fine.
But, for the last week, every morning, the Windows clients cannot find the domain. I can replace the /etc/smb.conf file with a saved good file, restart the Windows service and all works fine until the next morning, where it fails again. Simply restarting the Windows service does not help; it needs to be reconfigured with a new smb.conf file.
Mac clients can authenticate and connect via smb. The Windows XP Pro clients are up to date with latest updates, so there could be a problem from that, but the updates don't match the date the problems started. The start of the problem coincided with removing an Open Directory Replica, which was no longer needed. It is probably unrelated, but it is the only change I can think of.
There must be some overnight process which resets some setting. Anyone have an idea?
    Thanks for any help!

    Tom,
We destroyed our domain and rejoined all our XP boxes. This did not fix the problem. There appears to be a bug in Apple samba-100.7 (10.4.9).
As a quick fix we extracted the smbd binary and smbd.plist from a 10.4.8 combo update (Note: you could also grab the files from a working 10.4.8 install)...
    1. Download the 10.4.8 combo update from http://www.apple.com/support
    2. Mount the 10.4.8 update .dmg
    3. In Terminal navigate to the folder containing Archive.pax.gz, in our case this was...
    cd /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Server\ 10.4.8\ Combined\ Update/MacOSXSrvrCombo10.4.8PPC.mpkg/Contents/Installers/MacOSXSvrCmbBase10.4.8 PPC.pkg/Contents
    4. Copy Archive.pax.gz to a location on your HDD, like Desktop
    cp Archive.pax.gz ~/Desktop
    5. Unzip Archive.pax.gz
    cd ~/Desktop
    gunzip Archive.pax.gz
    6. Grab a copy of Pacifist and use it to open Archive.pax
    7. Using Pacifist, extract (drag and drop) the following files from the archive to your Desktop...
    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/smbd.plist
    /usr/sbin/smbd
Note: We are going to replace smb in the next step, best backup the current copies of the above files before proceeding.
    8. Open Terminal again...
    Stop SMB...
    sudo serveradmin stop smb
    Replace samba with 10.4.8 version...
    sudo cp ~/Desktop/smbd /usr/sbin/smbd
    sudo cp ~/Desktop/smbd.plist /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/smbd.plist
    9. Restart SMB and the process is complete...
    sudo serveradmin start smb
    Cheers,
    Tim
