Help with lack of space

Hi, I am a newbie to the Nano, my daughter has one and she has over 600 songs on hers and room to go, plus pictures. I just bought mine, have put 101 songs on and it is telling me it is full. How can this be?! It says I have only 244 KB free. Something must be incorrect if my daughter can have so many on hers no problem.
Please any and all suggestions or help would be SO apreciated!!

Hi there
Firstly, what size of Nano do you have? Check the bottom of the silver back panel to find out. A 4GB will hold around 1000 songs, a 2GB=500 songs and a 1GB=250 songs. However these songs limits are based on a number of factors including 4 minutes per song, 1MB per minute, encoded as 128 kbps in AAC format.
Before thinking about converting songs etc. (detailled below), i would consider restoring the Nano. This would rule out a glitch in the memory of the iPod. To restore, connect the iPod, open the iPod updater (Start>All Programs>iPod>iPod Updater), and click restore. The process takes around five minutes and will take your iPod back to factory settings, removing all songs and settings you put in. It will not change/remove your songs or information on iTunes.
Once the restore is complete, open iTunes and put the songs back on to see if that has helped. Be aware that the update settings will now be set to "Automatically update all songs and playlists" so if you usually used manual (drag and drop) updating, go to Edit>Preferences>iPod tab to change back to manual.
If the restore hasn't changed much, i would blame your songs, or more precisly, their format and size etc.
Check the encoding of your songs. To do this, right click one the sorting columns in iTunes tick bit rate, then click this new column to sort the songs by bit rate. Any songs that are encoded at higher than 128 kbps will be causing excess space to be used for storage. To change the bit rate of these songs you can convert them to AAC format (sound quality will be lost). Or you can reimport them from CD/Computer once you have changed the import settings as detailled below, but that could be time consuming.
To convert go to the edit menu, select preferences, click the advanced tab, and select importing. For best song capacity on the iPod, make sure that the encoder is set to "Import using AAC encoder", and "High quality 128 kbps". Hit OK. Then collect together all the high encoded songs and select them all (click the top one and hold shift, then click the bottom one). Right click the highlighted area and go to "Convert selection to AAC". This could take a while if there are many songs.
Once complete, go to the Edit menu, and select "Show duplicate songs". Delete all the "old" songs, recognisable by their bitrate, format or size. Again, to show these, right click a sorting column, and tick the respective ones.
Once this is done, update the iPod.
If your songs are all changed into 128kbps and are mostly all around 4 mins long, then you should get very close to the respective iPod size song limit
P.S. Sorry this is so long

  • Need help with Low disk space issue and blue screen

Hi Everyone, just seen a message stating a low disk space on my Mac pro bought last November and tried plugging in an external hard drive to remove some pictures to free up some space but it seems that the computer did not have enough space left to start up and run the hard drive. I then tried to restart and ended up with a blue screen and have no knowledge now how to fix this problem. I phoned support but they say I have no technical support left but do have warranty and I would need to either try with the community here or take the unit to an apple store for an appointment. The store is an 1 and 1/2 from me and I really want o see if there is another fix that could allow me to start again then remove some files and then add external drive to remove more. I was blown away at the low amount of storage.....looked for the icloud option last night to upload there as i was told about this by a UK client of mine and now see it is not up and running. Any advice or help by the communtiy would be greatly appreciated as this is my business and travelling laptop. Cheers, Dean <")))><

    Great to hear Dean, thanks!
Further notes: OSX needs about 15% or 10GB Free space minimum, but will run mucch faster/safer with 30-40% or 50GB of Free Space... Free Space is no longer ours to use.
Another tool to help clear up assorted things is Applejack...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

  • Help with Erase Free Space URGENT

I'm desperate I'm having to ship my Dad's Macbook pro back to his work as his contract is finished an he asked me to delete all information from the laptop. I used the erase free space option 6 times option hit enter from the Laptop install disk and let it run, it had been running 24 hours when I pushed the skip button thinking it was taking too long it's been like that ever since so now about 18 hours. Please someone help me with this problem. If I was to pull the plug so to speak what would happen?
Cheers all help is hugely appreciated.

On my machine, Disk Utility offers, under the Security Options, a zero out data (one pass), a 7-pass, and a 35-pass option. What's a 6 times option? Or, do you mean you hit the erase free space option six times? If so, that wouldn't delete the information, it just writes to the free space, not the used space. AFAIK, you can pull the plug, boot the machine with the install disk, launch Disk Utility, and select one of the Security Options. Note, that it could take quite awhile. Just let it run until it finishes.

  • Help with USB drive space

I have a Optima Attache USB drive with 5G that I am trying to back up school documents on with my Mac Book Pro 10.4.11 (Tiger).
Currently there are a few files on there, and going into information I can see it says 1.19 G are currently used.
However, if I just open the USB drive from my desktop, the folder says only 3.9MB are available and won't let me put anything else on.
I know there is more free space than that on the flash drive but how do I get it to allow me to load more?
Thank you for any help/advice, I really need to get this to work ASAP to back up important documents.

Connect the drive and then select Finder menu > Empty Trash. On external drives, the 'deleted' files are stored in an invisible folder (called .Trashes) at the root level of the drive. If you eject/unmount the drive, those files are not deleted. You must empty the trash _with the drive connected_.

  • Help with missing HD space please

    I have a powerbook with the 1.67GHz G4.
I was deleting free space in the Disk Utility program from my main(only) HD. I recall that when i started the procedure i had about 20GB free space on the drive. Well, i tried the 7-times over write option, but after about and hour or so i had to do some other things on the computer and canceled the program.
After this my computer started giving me out of space warnings and i checked and now my computer has about 500MB of free space.
I can only assume that some temporary file that was supposed to be deleted at the end of the wipe was not deleted and is now hogging space on my drive. A cursory look at the file sizes of folders in my root directory via the finder didnt show anything untoward.
Any ideas what is the solution to getting my space back?
I ran repair permissions and verify disk and the space is still gone

*I can only assume that some temporary file that was supposed to be deleted at the end of the wipe was not deleted and is now hogging space on my drive. A cursory look at the file sizes of folders in my root directory via the finder didnt show anything untoward.*
It might be a hidden file.
You can look in the terminal for files bigger then 24meg or so.
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
    sudo find / -size +50000 -exec ls -lh {} \;
enter your logon password & I assume you are running as administrator.
This will give you a few errors when you scan the /dev directory. I'd disconnect any external harddrives.
    man find
    for details.
You can also use whatsize to find large files.
WhatSize is a simple tool that allows the user to quickly measure the size in bytes of a given folder and all subfolders and files within it. You would be surprised at to how many useless files might be laying around on your hard disks. The files and folders are automatically sorted by size, with the biggest sizes first. See:

  • Can't download videos I bought on iTunes. Lack of space but I already erased lots of applications and still not working.. Can you help ASAP please as I can't watch videos anymore..

    Hi,
I bought the last version of IPad that came out recently ( I bought it 3 weeks ago). It is a 16GB.
So far I love this product, but I 'm getting stuck with movie downloads from iTunes.
Indeed I just ordered 3 movies in HD and they don't download as the message "error lack of space" come up.
So I made some space on my IPad, erased most of my music (only 156 MB left), I had pages, I erased it but really I 'm loosing $11..., I erased all the movies I had before, and much more. Now what I don't understand is that I have only 3GB available when my following applications don't even take the 10.3GB of used space:
    Music: 156 MB
    Skype: 34,2 MB
    Sleep well: 16.6 MB
    Calculator: 11,8 MB
    Voice memos: 9,8MB
    Iswifter:  6,2 MB
    And Video says no Data
There is no extra application, so it is really strange it is doing this. I tried to reset and restart many times with no success. I also tried to look at the previews of the videos I bought and tried to redownload them but the same message come up.
Now apart of the strange lack of space on my IPad, I understand that the videos I wanted to download were in HD and therefore too big.
What I would like to do is to shift to download to SD but I can't do it and also can't erase the downloads...
I wonder if the downloads are actually not already taking space even tho they haven't even been able to charge some information (they are not even downloaded half way or anything like that).
Unfortunately I don't have a computer to download my IPad to, so I could try to manipulate the videos purchased from there. I'm traveling and now I can't watch movies anymore which is very annoying...
Also I checked my multi tasking is off....
Could you please help me as soon as possible on this?
    Thanks a lot,
    Julie

According to the trms of the iTunes and app stores - all sales are final. but that doe not mean that you can't try anyway. People ask for refunds all the time. Use the Express Lane email to contact iTunes.

You can still download the other movies in iTunes on your computer. Launch iTunes and go to Store>Check for Available Downloads. You can download them in iTunes and then sync them to the iPad later. When you are done watching the first movie, you can transfer it into iTunes on your computer, delete it from the iPad and you will have the room for another movie on the device. To transfer the movie when you are done with it, you can use the transfer purchases feature.

  • App won't install due to lack of space - with enough space on the phone

I try to install the navigation TomTom western Europe with size 1,6 gb. ITunes and phone says that I have 2,7GB free, but it refuse to install due to lack of space?

Navigon needs at least 3.3gb to install(Twice the apps size, at a minimum). To make sure you have enough space you should allow no less than 4gb. The space will be freed up once installation is complete.

  • Help with disk space!

i need some serious help with disk space... so im on itunes today and it says i am running out of disk space and need to delete some files... i deleted every song in my itunes library and it stills gives me this message. i cannot download anything... i dont know what to do to clear up a large amount of disk space... please help. thanks!

Just some obvious questions first ...did you delete the song from itunes or from a playlist? Did you empty the trash yet ..as deleted files will go to your trash but still take up space until their actually deleted from here.
Doing a simple 'Get Info' (control + click) on certain files and folders will let you know how much space they are using. This app. also works nice in letting you know where all your space is being used...

  • Fed up with lack of support & continuing authorization problems!  Help please!

I apologize that this is so long but this activations issue has been a long difficult process, and I welcome any and all help you care to offer.
On December 30, I opened a support case with Adobe Digital Editions because I got an error message saying I had "too many activations".  In my query I told the technician that I was not surprised that I had gotten locked because every time I open the program the setup assistant comes up and I have to enter my information to "authorize my computer" just to open it.  The setup assistant clearly says that you only have to authorize one time, but that isn't how it worked for me.   They unlocked or reset my account, but gave no advice about the other issue.  I still have to authorize every single time I open the program.
After weeks of back and forth (with my trying all their suggestiongs and none working) on the open case finally they sent a message requesting my phone number and the best date and time to call to resolve the problem over the phone.  Due to my 2 year old daughter I missed the call tonight (Jan. 20) from a man named Maneesh.  He left me a number (1-800-833-6687) to call him back which I did less than 5 minutes after he called me.  I was told that they do not service Digital Editions and I would need to contact the Adove Technical Support at 1-800-642-3623.  I called this number and was on hold for 50+ minutes. Finally a young man whose name I cannot pronounce told me that because Digital Editions is a free program that they receive no training on that product and that I would need to go online and open a support case to get help with my issue.  WTH?????  I explained to him four times that I already have an open support case and he kept telling me that Adobe doesn't offer support on this product because it is free.  Finally I asked to speak to his supervisor, and a woman came on the phone.  She took my OPEN case number and told me that she would forward my information to the correct department so that someone from another department can call me on the phone and tell me what my next step will be.
Basically I have been jerked around for weeks by these people who treat me like an idiot for trying to get some assistance with this problem.  Of couse to top it all off, tonight (while waiting nearly an hour for the tech support who couldn't help me) I borrowed an ebook from the library and when I tried to open digital editions to transfer it to my Nook Color I had to of course- AUTHORIZE MY COMPUTER.  And once again I got the "TOO MANY ACTIVATIONS" error.  I am locked out of my program once again.
Does anyone have any advice to share?  Can you help me determine why DE is asking me to authorize everytime I open it?  How do I stop that?  If I can't stop it am I doomed to a circle of getting locked out and opening support cases?  Will they eventually stop resetting my account?  After the ordeal tonight I am tempted to ditch the whole program and everything Adobe we have, but the eReads and Overdrive program that public libraries use work with it.  Or do any of you have another program?  Please share your experience with me- I am at wits end!

Unfortunately that didn't work.  I ended up putting my router in the DMZ as a workaround but it still had it's share of issues.  After another week of trying to get Verizon to fix my connection (constant dropped connections forcing reboots of modem and router multiple times daily) I had Cable Internet installed today.  Went from an unstable 6Mb/s to a stable 30Mb/s with Cable.  I should have done this weeks ago.  I wasted over 50 hours of my time with Verizon bouncing my issue around to others hoping someone else would be willing to fix it.  Still no accountability with everyone tinkering with my setup taking a stab in the dark.  The last person I spoke with set up a technician to come to my house later this week...AGAIN because he said there is something wrong on the line.  I've known that for weeks but the tech that refused to fix my issue when he was in my house last week instead tried blaming it on something completely irrelevant because he had no clue what to do.  One would think someone from Verizon would have reached out to me from this thread but they did not.  In fact, the last tech's supervisor called me when i wasn't home, said "hello, this is XXX from Verizon......hello?"  and hung up.  Never a follow up as I was left once again to solve the problem myself.  Well...I did.  The incompetence of Verizon, it's poor training, and awful follow up procedures has cost them a customer. I am truly disappointed.

  • Help Needed - replacing space with non-breaking space on the fly

    Hi,
I have a text field I'm trying to fiddle the input on. Basically I want to replace all spaces (ascii code 32) with non-breaking spaces (ascii code 160) as they are typed.
It seemed as though a KeyListener was the way to go, and I've successfully detected whenever a space is sent. I can consume() that KeyEvent, or setKeyChar to change it to another key. But I cannot see how to change it to a non-keyboard character.
    Any suggestions?

I need your help with a decision to use iPhoto.  I have been a PC user since the mid 1980’s and more recently have used ACDSee to manage my photo images and Photoshop to edit them.  I have used ProShow Gold to create slideshows.  I am comfortable with my own folder and file naming conventions. I currently have over 23,000 images of which around 60% are scans going back 75 years.  Since I keep a copy of the originals, the storage requirements for over 46,000 images is huge.  180GB plus.
I now have a Macbook Pro and will add an iMac when the new models arrive.  For my photos, I want to stay with Photoshop which also gives me the Bridge.  The only obvious reason to use iPhoto is to take advantage of Faces and the link to iMovie to make slideshows.  What am I missing and is using iPhoto worth the effort?
If I choose to use iPhoto, I am not certain whether I need to load the originals and the edited versions. I suspect that just the latter is sufficient.  If I set PhotoShop as my external editor, I presume that iPhoto will keep track of all changes moving forward.  However, over 23,000 images in iPhoto makes me twitchy and they are appear hidden within iPhoto.  In the past, I have experienced syncing problems with, and database errors in, large databases.  If I break up the images into a number of projects, I loose the value of Faces reaching back over time.
Some guidance and insight would be appreciated.  I have a number of Faces questions which I will save for later.

Bridge and Photoshop is a common file-based management system. (Not sure why you'd have used ACDSEE as well as Bridge.) In any event, it's on the way out. You won't be using it in 5 years time.
Up to this the lack of processing power on your computer left no choice but to organise this way. But file based organisation is as sensible as organising a Shoe Warehouse based on the colour of the boxes. It's also ultimately data-destructive.
Modern systems are Database driven. Files are managed, Images imported, virtual versions, lossless processing and unlimited editing are the way forward.
For a Photographer Photoshop is overkill. It's an enormously powerful app, a staple of the Graphic Designers' trade. A Photographer uses maybe 15% to 20% of its capability.
Apps like iPhoto, Lightroom, Aperture are the way forward - for photographers. There's the 20% of Photoshop that shooters actually use, coupled with management and lossless processing. Pop over to the Aperture or Lightroom forums (on the Adobe site) and one comment shows up over and over again... "Since I started using Aperture/ Lightroom I hardly ever use Photoshop any more..." and if there is a job that these apps can do, then the (much) cheaper Elements will do it.
The change is not easy though, especially if you have a long-standing and well thought out filing system of your own. The first thing I would strongly advise is that you experiment before making any decisions. So I would create a Library, import 300 or 400 shots and play. You might as well do this in iPhoto to begin with - though if you’re a serious hobbyist or a Pro then you'll find yourself looking further afield pretty soon. iPhoto is good for the family snapper, taking shots at birthdays and sharing them with friends and family.
Next: If you're going to successfully use these apps you need to make a leap: Your files are not your Photos.
The illustration I use is as follows: In my iTunes Library I have a file called 'Let_it_Be_The_Beatles.mp3'. So what is that, exactly? It's not the song. The Beatles never wrote an mp3. They wrote a tune and lyrics. They recorded it and a copy of that recording is stored in the mp3 file. So the file is just a container for the recording. That container is designed in a specific way attuned to the characteristics and requirements of the data. Hence, mp3.
Similarly, that Jpeg is not your photo, it's a container designed to hold that kind of data. iPhoto is all about the data and not about the container. So, regardless of where you choose to store the file, iPhoto will manage the photo, edit the photo, add metadata to the Photo but never touch the file. If you choose to export - unless you specifically choose to export the original - iPhoto will export the Photo into a new container - a new file containing the photo.
When you process an image in iPhoto the file is never touched, instead your decisions are recorded in the database. When you view the image then the Master is presented with these decisions applied to it. That's why it's lossless. You can also have multiple versions and waste no disk space because they are all just listings in the database.
These apps replace the Finder (File Browser) for managing your Photos. They become the Go-To app for anything to do with your photos. They replace Bridge too as they become a front-end for Photoshop.
So, want to use a photo for something - Export it. Choose the format, size and quality you want and there it is. If you're emailing, uploading to websites then these apps have a "good enough for most things" version called the Preview - this will be missing some metadata.
So it's a big change from a file-based to Photo-based management, from editing files to processing Photos and it's worth thinking it through before you decide.

  • Moving from iPhoto to Aperture with limited drive space

My biggest concern is the lack of space on my MacBook Air.
I have already purchased and download Aperture.
In the Import window I see the "move files" radiobutton and the "copy files" radiobutton under the "Store Files:" dropdown,  but they are disabled.
As I understand if I just import my IPhoto Library, it will duplicate the files into the Aperture Library, and that wont work since my current library (iPhoto) is way bigger than my freespace in disk.
Buying external drive is not an option now since I im saving to buy a NAS that will solve my space problems in the near future.
What i would like to achieve is just to move all my iPhoto Library to Aperture Library. I wont use iPhoto anymore.
Can someone help me with this? Im really looking forward to use Aperture....

    Hello Richieto,
I have already purchased and download Aperture.
In the Import window I see the "move files" radiobutton and the "copy files" radiobutton under the "Store Files:" dropdown,  but they are disabled. What i would like to achieve is just to move all my iPhoto Library to Aperture Library. I wont use iPhoto anymore.
Set the "storeFiles" selector to "in their current location".
Have you seen this support article. Moving from iPhoto to Aperture - How to move http://www.apple.com/aperture/iphoto-to-aperture/how.html
If you follow these instructions, you will import your iPhoto Library by referencing - that means, all images remain in your iPhoto library; your iPhoto Library will remain unchanged, but Aperture references the files in in the iPhoto Library. This will save disk space; your images will be stored only once: Set the "Store Files" selector to "in their current location".
If you decide to do it this way, make sure you have a working backup of your iPhoto library. Also remember at all times that your master image files now are managed independently by two applications, that do know nothing of what the other app does and are not synchronized. So you must not move the iPhoto library, and you must not delete any images that are shared by both applications. Other than that this way to import from iPhoto will be the best deal, if you need to be frugal with disk space.
What i would like to achieve is just to move all my iPhoto Library to Aperture Library. I wont use iPhoto anymore.
Once you are happy with  the way Aperture handles the images you can copy your iPhoto library to a backup location and consolidate the master image files (File -> consolidate) by moving them from your iPhoto Library into the Aperture Library. This will delete them from iPhoto and store them inside the Aperture Library package. Then delete the iPhoto Library after testing that the consolidation was successful.
I im saving to buy a NAS that will solve my space problems in the near future.
Just a caution - you should not use the NAS to store the Aperture library - an Aperture library needs to bestored on a local volume formatted MacOS X extended.

    Léonie

Someone wants to rent a room they check the rentRoom checkbox.  Then the enter how many rooms 1,2,3 etc..  The value for the rentRoom checkbox is $25.
I can get it when the checkbox for rentRoom is selected the rentRoom.Total computes correctly.  However, what I want is when the form opens up a default value of $0.00 to be in there.  I also want if someone goes back and unchecks the rentRoom checkbox the value goes back to $0.00 not just blank.   Right now I am getting the error the value entered does not match the value of the field.  That is if I put the default value in options.  Basically, I can't seem to figure out the javascript code to get this to work.
Am I asking for too much, can someone guide me to javascript to help me out.
I have tried if/then statements and switch statements.  I just can't figure out how to get it to for lack of better a word - toggle back and forth.
If this is not possible please tell me.  If it is too complicated tell me.  I am not using livecycle for this as we had a word document and I just used the find form fields.  I am also using Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional.
    Thanks

    Hello,
Thanks that looks good.  I am still missing something but the calc doesn't work when I put in my variables.  I will work with it more but nothing happens.
The one thing is I have the default value of the checkbox as 15 so don't know if that messes it up.
Right now I get the default value of $0.00 all the time.  When I click on the check box on/off it doesn't do the calcs.
sorry, any more input, what am i missing??
I also changed the syntax error that was posted on your origianl post.  You had == 'Off" I changed that to 'Off'
