Help with Query - Duration Calculation/Time Overlap

Hello All,
Here is the scenario.
We have a table of events which has event id, start datetime and end datetime. This is essentially a calendar of a person.
EventID StartTS EndTS
21 8 AM 4 PM
20 9 AM 11 AM
18 3 PM 4 PM
2 10 AM 12 AM
The result I need is event id, duration where the duration is the duration of the event minus the overlap duration of any other event with event id less than the current event id.
Answer :
EventID StartTS EndTS Duration Overlap
21 8 AM 4 PM 8 - 4 = 4 All below 3 event
20 9 AM 11 AM 2 - 1 = 1 EventID #2
18 3 PM 5 PM 2 No Overlap
2 10 AM 12 PM 2 No Overlap
Thanks for you help!

  • [8i] Need help with some workday calculations

    At the beginning of the month, I got help with a workday calculation in: [8i] Help with function with parameters (for workday calculation)
    Now, as it turns out, I was able to locate a function in the database that does what I want, however, it is much slower to use the function than to join two copies of the CALN table (Please see referenced thread for details. I can copy them to this thread if necessary.) I need to verify that the pre-existing function has 'DETERMINISTIC' in it, as I would guess that if it doesn't, it would be much slower than it could be.
    But now, I've come across a situation where I have to do multiple workday calculations in the same query--enough that I have to join 6 copies of my CALN table. I can't imagine that is at all efficient. I believe it was Frank K. who said (in the original thread) that if the function was slow, I should consider alternatives. Can anyone help me identify some of those alternatives? I'm definitely at that point now. (This query is one I'm using as the base for a report in Oracle BI, and let's just say it doesn't like my query, even though my syntax appears to be correct, and I would guess that joining 6 copies of one table is at least partly to blame for this).
    Note: I'm working with Oracle 8i

    OK, I finally have some sample data... I tried to make it thorough. I've included data in the CALN table YTD + tomorrow, so that any workday calculations using SYSDATE will work.

  • Help with query calculations (recursive)

    Hi All,
    I want some help with a query using a base rate and the result use in the next calculation year.
    Here an example:
    create table rate_type(
    rate_type_id    number,
    rate_desc       nvarchar2(50),
    rate_base_year  number
    insert into rate_type(rate_type_id, rate_desc, rate_base_year) values (1, 'Desc1', 4.6590);
    insert into rate_type(rate_type_id, rate_desc, rate_base_year) values (2, 'Desc2', 4.6590);
    create table rates (
    rate_type_id number
    rate_year    number,
    rate_value   number
    insert into rates(rate_type_id, rate_year, rate_value) values (1, 2012, 1.2);
    insert into rates(rate_type_id, rate_year, rate_value) values (1, 2013, 1.3);
    insert into rates(rate_type_id, rate_year, rate_value) values (1, 2014, 1.4);
    insert into rates(rate_type_id, rate_year, rate_value) values (2, 2012, 1.2);
    insert into rates(rate_type_id, rate_year, rate_value) values (2, 2013, 1.3);
    insert into rates(rate_type_id, rate_year, rate_value) values (2, 2014, 1.4);The calculation for the first year should be the base rate of the rate type. The next year should use the result of the previous year and so on.
    The result of my sample data is:
    2012 = 4.659 + 1.2 + 4.659 * (1.2 * 0.01) = 5.9149
    2013 = 5.9149 + 1.3 + 5.9149 * (1.3 * 0.01) = 7.1859
    2014 = 7.1859 + 1.4 + 7.1859 * (1.4 * 0.01) = 8.4721Query result:
    NAME 2012 2013 2014
    Desc1 5.9149 7.1859 8.4721
    Desc2 XXXX XXX XXXX
    How can I do this in one select statement? Any ideas?

  • Help with PDF Javascript calculation involving checkboxes

    Hello Everyone,
    I have a PDF Form, and need help with a calculation.
    For the sake of simplicity, Lets say I have 5 fields. FSA1 and FSA2 are checkboxes. TotalClaimed1 and TotalClaimed2 are text fields which allow only a numerical input.
    The last box, FSA_Total, should add the value from TotalClaimed1 if FSA1 is checked, and it should also add the value from TotalClaimed2 if FSA2 is checked.
    The code is malfunctioning, however. Something is causing it to add to the total every time the box is checked. Its almost like the checking off of the box is what causes the addition.
    It seems like the code is being read as "When the box is checked, add the value to the total", so each time the box gets checked, it adds to the total again.
    and it should be "IF the box is checked, add the value to the total" so if there is a value in the field, and the box is checked, that value is passed on to the total; and if the box is not checked, the value is ignored.
    Can anyone spot what might be causing this? Code is below.
    var claim1 = parseInt(this.getField('TotalClaimed1').value),
        claim2 = parseInt(this.getField('TotalClaimed2').value),
        fsabox = parseInt(this.getField('FSA_Total').value);
    if (this.getField('FSA1').value == 'Yes') {
        fsabox += claim1;
    if (this.getField('FSA2').value == 'Yes') {
        fsabox += claim2;
    event.value = fsabox;
    Thanks
    Thisguy1234

    This is a custom calculation script for FSA_Total, correct? The code is working correctly, it's just not what you want. Assuming this is a custom calculation script in the FSA_Total field, it should be something like:
    var sum = 0;
    var claim1 = parseInt(getField('TotalClaimed1').value, 10),
        claim2 = parseInt(getField('TotalClaimed2').value, 10),
    // Add field values if corresponding check boxes are selected
    if (getField('FSA1').value !== "Off") {
        sum += claim1;
    if (getField('FSA2').value !== "Off") {
        sum += claim2;
    // Set this field value
    event.value = sum;
    Why are you using parseInt, exactly?

  • Help with iTunes database and Time Machine after Lion clean install

    I did a clean install of OS X Lion and think I've given myself problems with my Snow Leopard Time Machine backup and with my iTunes Library database files.
    My iMac (2007) had become very sluggish so I opted for a clean install.  Before the install of Lion my Snow Leopard 10.6.8 internal 1TB HD was at about  600GBs.  I was using Time Machine to backup to an external 1TB drive.  I had my iTunes 10.?  library on the same drive.
    For the Lion install I partitioned my internal 1TB HD into two partitions - a 250GB Lion boot partition and the rest for Lion data files.
    Now I  have two problems - 1.  I can't  work out how to re-connect my Time Machine backups, since they were related to a much bigger original drive, and 2.  I can't seem to find my iTunes database files.
    I also don't want to restore any application files at this stage, as I'm determined to do a fresh install of only the applications I need as I go along, and hopefully  avoid the issues of sluggishness I had with Snow Leopard.
    I have all my iTunes files in their pre-Lion external HD folder, but that folder does not seem to  have the iTunes Library.XML or iTunes Library files.  I didn't delete them so I'm hoping they were in my iTunes folder on my SL boot drive.  But that drive was deleted during the install, so I'll be depending on Time Machine to restore the database.
    Can anyone suggest a way to deal with Time Machine for my Lion install, and a way to restore my iTunes database?  I'd like to keep as much of the Snow Leopard Time Machine data as I can, while continuing to do Time Machine backups from my Lion installation.
    Anyone know where iTunes stores those database files, if not in the external drive iTunes folder? Spotlight search doesn't find the files, but is there a way to search my old Time Machine backups without having the Time Machine backups folder re-connected in Lion?
    Thanks.

    My iTunes folder is organised like this if it helps:
    And iTunes uses them from the Prefrences like this:

    Hello Faraviper
    I think you have not installed PME component correctly. Please use the following path to see the help documentation for that.

  • Help with query optimization

    Right now my query takes anywhere from 30 to 60 sec's to execute. What should I do to cut this time down?
    Here is my Query
    select * from a , b, c
    where a.a_seq = b.b_seq
    and a.a_seq = c.c_seq
    and a.a_type between 3 and 19
    and a.detl_cod = 'AV'
    and b.detl_stat = 'CLD'
    and c.date is not null
    and c.id != 92342
    these tables have 100 thousand rows each. What should I be looking at to cut down the execution time on this query?

    Sorry, I am fairly new to SQL. I can write queries but, I have no idea where to even begin with when it comes to checking performance. What are the statistics that you are mentioning? how will it effect performance? and what about indexed attributes? there are a lot of indexed attrinutes on each of these tables. I am unable to give you the exact tables because it is production application code(Cofidential).
    I really appreciate any help from you
    Thank you.

    Insert into FGL (FGL_GRNT_CODE,FGL_FUND_CODE,FGL_ACCT_CODE,FGL_ORGN_CODE,FGL_PROG_CODE,FGL_GRNT_YEAR,FGL_PERIOD,FGL_BUDGET) values ('240055','240055','7600','4730','02','11','1','400');

    Insert into FGL (FGL_GRNT_CODE,FGL_FUND_CODE,FGL_ACCT_CODE,FGL_ORGN_CODE,FGL_PROG_CODE,FGL_GRNT_YEAR,FGL_PERIOD,FGL_BUDGET) values ('240055','240055','7470','4730','02','10','2','200');I bascially need to get the total of the budget column. however its not as simple as it sound(well atleast not for me.) the totals carry over to the new period. youll noticed the you have a period column. basically what im saying is that
    fgl_grant_year 10 period 1 = for account 7600 its $100 and $100 for period 2 you see 100 dollars again this is not to be added this is the carried over balance. which remains $100.
    so im trying to write a query that basically does the following.
    im given a period for the sake of this example lets say period 1 i get nothing else. I have to find the greates grant year grab the amount for period 14(which is the total from the previous year) and add it to the amount of the current period. in this case period 1 grnt_year 11
    so the expected outcome should be $700
    240055     240055     7240     4730     02     10     14     200
    240055     240055     7600     4730     02     10     14     100
    240055     240055     7600     4730     02     11     1     400keep in mind that im not given a year just a period.
    any help that you guys can offer would be immensely appreciated. I have been trying to get this to work for over 3 days now.
    finally broke down and put together this post

    the current period +(current period - greatest year 00)
    hope that makes sense so in other words with the new data above. if i was querying period two of grant year 11. i would end up with $800
    because the greatest year is 11 it contains a period 0 with amount of $400 so my total should be
    period 2 amount $ 600
    period 0 amount $ 400 - period 2 amount of $600 = 200
    600+200 = $800
    if i query period 1 of grant 360055 i would just end up with 800 of grnt year 10.
    i have tried to modify that query you supplied to me with no luck. I have tried for several day but im embarrased to say i just can get it to do what im trying to do .
    can you please help me out.

  • Need Help With Query Using Aggregation

    If I have a table, defined like this:
    CREATE TABLE range_test
    range_id NUMBER(20) NOT NULL,
    grade CHAR(1) NOT NULL,
    lower_bound_of_range NUMBER(5,2) NOT NULL,
    upper_bound_of_range NUMBER(5,2) NOT NULL,
    received_date_time_stamp TIMESTAMP DEFAULT SYSTIMESTAMP NOT NULL
    And I wanted to query the table to find the range associated with the last inserted row for each 'grade' (e.g. 'A', 'B', 'C', etc), how would I go about that?
    I want something like the following, but I know that this won't work right:
    SELECT
    grade,
    lower_bounding_of_range,
    upper_bounding_of_range,
    max(received_date_time_stamp)
    FROM
    range_test GROUP BY received_date_time_stamp;
    Thanks for your help. . .I'm frustrating myself with this one and I think it should be possible without having to use PL/SQL (i.e. SQL aggregate functions or sub-queries should work).

  • Query off of Oracle using WinSql - Need help with query

    I am trying to query off of Oracle using program WinSql.
    I have a table(tticpr200110) that has the following sample data:

    23500076 ACL     .0049
    23500076 APM     0
    23500076 APO     .0093
    23500076 EXP     .0001
    23500076 RES     .0072
    and what I want it to look like is:
    ITEM     ACL     APM     APO     EXP     RES
    23500076     0.0049     0     0.0093     0.0001     0.0072
    (actually I need the last 2 columns added together to be MATL-but can deal with that down the road).
    Seems simple enough, but I don't know to put into the columns.
    Any help would be GREATLY appreciated as soon as possible would be even better.

    My table - tticpr200110 when it runs I get the following sample data for part number 23500076:
    The first coloumn ITEM is the part number.
    The second column CODE is 1 of 5 different cost codes
    The third column is the cost for that code for that part.
    ITEM CODE AMNT
    23500076 ACL 0.0049
    23500076 APM 0.0000
    23500076 APO 0.0093
    23500076 EXP 0.0001
    23500076 RES 0.0072
    I want to make a query that makes the data look like this:
    ITEM ACL APM APO EXP RES
    23500076 0.0049 0.0000 0.0093 0.0001 0.0072
    (similar to a pivot table in excel or acess)
    I hope this helps better.

  • I need help with this program ( Calculating Pi using random numbers)

    hi
    please understand that I am not trying to ask anymore to do this hw for me. I am new to java and working on the assignment. below is the specification of this program:
    Calculate PI using Random Numbers
    In geometry the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter is known as . The value of can be estimated from an infinite series of the form:
     / 4 = 1 - (1/3) + (1/5) - (1/7) + (1/9) - (1/11) + ...
    There is another novel approach to calculate . Imagine that you have a dart board that is 2 units square. It inscribes a circle of unit radius. The center of the circle coincides with the center of the square. Now imagine that you throw darts at that dart board randomly. Then the ratio of the number of darts that fall within the circle to the total number of darts thrown is the same as the ratio of the area of the circle to the area of the square dart board. The area of a circle with unit radius is just square unit. The area of the dart board is 4 square units. The ratio of the area of the circle to the area of the square is / 4.
    To simuluate the throwing of darts we will use a random number generator. The Math class has a random() method that can be used. This method returns random numbers between 0.0 (inclusive) to 1.0 (exclusive). There is an even better random number generator that is provided the Random class. We will first create a Random object called randomGen. This random number generator needs a seed to get started. We will read the time from the System clock and use that as our seed.
    Random randomGen = new Random ( System.currentTimeMillis() );
    Imagine that the square dart board has a coordinate system attached to it. The upper right corner has coordinates ( 1.0, 1.0) and the lower left corner has coordinates ( -1.0, -1.0 ). It has sides that are 2 units long and its center (as well as the center of the inscribed circle) is at the origin.
    A random point inside the dart board can be specified by its x and y coordinates. These values are generated using the random number generator. There is a method nextDouble() that will return a double between 0.0 (inclusive) and 1.0 (exclusive). But we need random numbers between -1.0 and +1.0. The way we achieve that is:
    double xPos = (randomGen.nextDouble()) * 2 - 1.0;
    double yPos = (randomGen.nextDouble()) * 2 - 1.0;
    To determine if a point is inside the circle its distance from the center of the circle must be less than the radius of the circle. The distance of a point with coordinates ( xPos, yPos ) from the center is Math.sqrt ( xPos * xPos + yPos * yPos ). The radius of the circle is 1 unit.
    The class that you will be writing will be called CalculatePI. It will have the following structure:
    import java.util.*;
    public class CalculatePI
    public static boolean isInside ( double xPos, double yPos )
    public static double computePI ( int numThrows )
    public static void main ( String[] args )
    In your method main() you want to experiment and see if the accuracy of PI increases with the number of throws on the dartboard. You will compare your result with the value given by Math.PI. The quantity Difference in the output is your calculated value of PI minus Math.PI. Use the following number of throws to run your experiment - 100, 1000, 10,000, and 100,000. You will call the method computePI() with these numbers as input parameters. Your output will be of the following form:
    Computation of PI using Random Numbers
    Number of throws = 100, Computed PI = ..., Difference = ...
    Number of throws = 1000, Computed PI = ..., Difference = ...
    Number of throws = 10000, Computed PI = ..., Difference = ...
    Number of throws = 100000, Computed PI = ..., Difference = ...
    * Difference = Computed PI - Math.PI
    In the method computePI() you will simulate the throw of a dart by generating random numbers for the x and y coordinates. You will call the method isInside() to determine if the point is inside the circle or not. This you will do as many times as specified by the number of throws. You will keep a count of the number of times a dart landed inside the circle. That figure divided by the total number of throws is the ratio / 4. The method computePI() will return the computed value of PI.
    and below is what i have so far:
    import java.util.*;
    public class CalculatePI
      public static boolean isInside ( double xPos, double yPos )
         double distance = Math.sqrt( xPos * xPos + yPos * yPos );
      public static double computePI ( int numThrows )
        Random randomGen = new Random ( System.currentTimeMillis() );
        double xPos = (randomGen.nextDouble()) * 2 - 1.0;
        double yPos = (randomGen.nextDouble()) * 2 - 1.0;
        int hits = 0;
        int darts = 0;
        int i = 0;
        int areaSquare = 4 ;
        while (i <= numThrows)
            if (distance< 1)
                hits = hits + 1;
            if (distance <= areaSquare)
                darts = darts + 1;
            double PI = 4 * ( hits / darts );
            i = i+1;
      public static void main ( String[] args )
        Scanner sc = new Scanner (System.in);
        System.out.print ("Enter number of throws:");
        int numThrows = sc.nextInt();
        double Difference = PI - Math.PI;
        System.out.println ("Number of throws = " + numThrows + ", Computed PI = " + PI + ", Difference = " + difference );
    }when I tried to compile it says "cannot find variable 'distance' " in the while loop. but i thought i already declare that variable in the above method. Please give me some ideas to solve this problem and please check my program to see if there is any other mistakes.
    Thanks a lot.

    You've declared a local variable, distance, in the method isInside(). The scope of this variable is limited to the method in which it is declared. There is no declaration for distance in computePI() and that is why the compiler gives you an error.
    I won't check your entire program but I did notice that isInside() is declared to be a boolean method but doesn't return anything, let alone a boolean value. In fact, it doesn't even compute a boolean value.
