Help with working out layout

Hi,
I trying to work out the best way to structure a layout for a
page that is
centered with a dropshadow on all sides, and for the main
large image and
text below to be flexible height to allow for different font
settings etc.
The way I initially layed it out, I did a plain white
background image for
each div, with the drop shadow on each side, but that makes
the heights
rigid.
This is a pic of what it should look like -

Fiona

Thanks Alec,
That was sort of what I thought might be the approach, but
wasnt sure of the
technicalities of it.
I will get right on it.
Thank you for your help.

  • Help with creating a layout.

    I need help creating a layout for my program, but am having tons of problems. I just an't that good at creating this, and it's been driving me insane.
    Here's the link to how I want it to look like. http://s94182144.onlinehome.us/randomstuff/layout.JPG
    In panel 1... that will be a cartesian plain, so it will pretty much be empty until lines and stuff are drawn in there.
    In panel 2, there will be two drop down menus and a couple of buttons
    In panel 3, there will be a bunch of things, with two buttons on the bottom.... and this section has to be scrollable.
    Any help with the basic layout will be helpful... I can put in the buttons myself. For reference, the whole programs size is 400x800.
    Thanks,
    sachit

    Read this section from the Swing tutorial on [url http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/layout/visual.html]How to Use Layout Managers. You can combine multiple Layout Managers to get the effect your want. By default the content pane uses the BorderLayout, so one approach might be:
    JPanel center = new JPanel(new BorderLayout());
    center.add(panel1, BorderLayout.CENTER);
    center.add(panel2, BorderLayout.SOUTH);
    getContentPane().add(center, BorderLayout.CENTER);
    getContentPane().add(panel3, BorderLayout.EAST);
    It turn you would layout panel1, panel2 and panel3 with the appropriate layout manager. Panel2 could be something like:
    JPanel panel2 = new JPanel( new BorderLayout() );
    panel2.add(comboBox1, BorderLayout.WEST);
    panel2.add(comboBox2, BorderLayout.EAST);
    JPanel bottom = new JPanel();
    bottom.add(button1);
    buttom.add(button2);
    panel.add(bottom, BorderLayout.SOUTH);

    You are looking at the drop-down menus at the top of iTunes e.g. on a Mac :
    If you are on iTunes 11 on Windows then press Alt-S and the Store menu should appear at the top.

  • Help with 2 column layout

    I can't seem to quite get the layout to work correctly on this.
    http://www.openrangeimaging.com/Test/Gravity-Test/index.html
    Problem -The Main Content column protrudes into the menu bar space and is not aligned with the top of the sidebar column. I'd like the  MainContent and Sidebar columns to have their tops aligned with each other. I need to keep the Main Content column from protruding into the menu bar.
    I inserted a spry menu bar and then modified the default styling quite a bit. It looks like it should. It is positioned where it should be. All of the css for it is stored in a separate folder that DW created when I add the spry menu. EXCEPT for one css rule, MenyBar1, that is in the other primary css folder. I don't think I added that but honestly I'm not sure. I don't know if the styling of the menu bar is responsible for the trouble. I've messed around with so much of the margin and etc on so many elements that I am now pretty confused.
    I'm hoping someone can take a look at this and help me figure out what I have done incorrectly.
    Thanks in advance for any reply.

    Hans thanks for your reply! Yes I want the tops of the Sidebar and Main content divs to be aligned. It's hard to tell form your screen grab but using the dashed line that's underneath the orange letter G as a reference it appears the yellow MainContent is lower than the  white Sidebar. The tops are not aligned with each other.
    I put the menu bar into a div and made sure it had 0 margin. I updated the file
    http://www.openrangeimaging.com/Test/Gravity-Test/index.html
    For some reason the Main content is allowed to move up farther than the sidebar. Also there is no top padding on the Main content but it appears the upper most heading is being held away from the top edge of the main content as if there is top padding. Something is not right here and I just can't seem to figure it out.
    I'm afraid I'm starting to get frustrated and somewhat desperate <g>
    Please Help!!!!!!!!!!
    Amend your #nav-menu css selector to as shown below:
    #nav-menu {
    width: 960px;
    overflow: hidden;
    You'll also then need to adjust the margin and padding of the <h1> tag (Main Content). So introduce another css rule for the  h1 as shown below:
    #mainContent h1 {
    padding: 15px 0 0 0;
    margin: 0;

  • Can anyone help with an out of memory error on CS2?

    Hello,
    I have been battling with an out of memory error on a dell laptop running 2gb of ram. I have had no prior issues with this laptop running CS2 until last week when I started getting the out of memory errors. I have seen several articles about this occuring on later versions of illustrator. Just prior to this issue appearing I had to delete and rebuild the main user profile on the computer due to it consistently logging into a temporary account.
    Once the new profile was established and all user documents and profile settings were transferred back into it, this problem started showing up. The error occurs when clicking on files listed as Illustrator files, and when opening the illustrator suite. Once I click on the out of memory error it still continues to load illustrator. The files are located on a server and not on the remote computer. I have tried to copy the files to the local hard drive with the same result when I try to open them. I also tried to change the extension to .pdf and got no further. I tried to open a file and recreate the work and all I got was the black outline of the fonts. none of the other artwork appeared. once rebuilt, when trying to save, It gives the out of memory error and does not save the file.
    Illustrator was installed on another dell laptop, same model, etc and works fine. no problem accessing network files. I just attempted to use Illustrator from the admin profile on the machine in question and it works fine and lightening fast. Just not from the new rebuilt profile. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall the software. it has not helped. could there be stray configuration settings that we transfered over to the new profile that should not have been?
    Any insights will be helpful.

    The implicit objects are avbl only inside scriptlets <%........%> and not inside your own custom methods (which you shouldnt anyways be having, in first place. However its ok since you have just about begun with jsps).
    To use the implicit 'out' object within custom methods, you will have to pass them as parameters when you call the methods from within your scriptlets.
    Try this
       <% @ page import="java.io.*"%>
      <html>
    <title> Sample code for calling a jsp </title>
    <head> </head>
    <body>

  • Need help with Fluid Grid Layout and variable column balance.

    I'm using the fluid grid layout.  I have multiple columns that are actually fluid grid layout columns done by Dreamweaver.  I'd like them to extend as high as each other (all to the maximum height of each other) within the same section.  An added catch is that in the desktop layout, I have three side by side under one that takes the whole width of the page.  On tablet size, it's 2x2 in a square grid.  On mobile, they're vertically stacked.  I'm trying to get it so that background colour and/or borders looks decent and is fully balanced, no matter which layout is hit with the fluid layout.  The columns reflow, no problem.  But the height of any background and/or border is variable.
    Any help on fixing this?
    Example at:  https://music2help.thoughtburst.net/
    The example doesn't have borders or colours, as it looked silly unbalanced.  The music2help.css is the only one I'm modifying manually.
    Love the fluid grid layout, but I need a way to make it behave decently with backgrounds/borders.  Any help would be hugely appreciated!
    Thanks!
    mark->

    I tried the solution Nancy posted.  It altered things, but doesn't seem to do the trick.
    Just some quick background.  I did HTML from 1994 through about five years ago by hand in vi on *nix systems.  I learned HTML through 4.01, and never bothered with XHTML at all.  I learned CSS through most of CSS2.  The CSS3 and HTML5 stuff is all new to me, but it can't be that hard.  I'm not exactly a novice in JS (I've done a fair bit of AJAX programming), but it's not even close to my primary language (I'm a Perl guy).
    I'm "stuck on" wanting to use Fluid Grid Layouts.  It's billed as one of the selling points of DW CS6, and I really like the concept and results.  I just want the results embellished a little, namely with sensible identical heights on grid containers set in the same row, so that you can apply background colours, dropshadows, and borders.  That's really all I want to do that it doesn't already do.
    I have a test page at:  http://music2help.thoughtburst.net/ that you can try with your Quick Columns.  I'd be interested to know if you can get it to work.
    Here's the catch, though...  Resize the browser, shrinking it inwards.  (I suggest Firefox, as Chrome only shrinks so far, and you won't get to Mobile width.)  As you can see, on a Tablet, one of the columns that should be equal height actually moves up a row and should be equal height with the row that, on a desktop, would take the entire width of the page area.  So that's like a 4-up output in printing terms.  At Mobile size, the entire thing is vertical, so none of the columns should be resized.
    If your product works and can accomodate these conditions, I think I would be interested in spending the $35 it costs.
    Let me know?  Thanks!
    EDIT:  Changed URL to be non-SSL.  The server has multiple vhosts on it, and I keep forgetting that I don't have a cert on this new one.  Sorry about that.  You can just add anything to one of the the three middle columns, if you're pulling it down to test.

  • Help with Work Template  Version 1.1 purchased at Apple Store

  • Help with dynamic page layouts

    Hello JSP Gurus,
    I'm attempting to dynamically generate the page layout for my site based on the organization a user belongs to. Basically, I'd have certain resources like navigation links, graphics, etc, that are modular. Then I'd like to construct the layout using these "moduls" in a dynamic fashion. Does anyone have any suggestions on techniques or technologies that would be useful? I'm not really looking at the portal/portlet model. Is this something that Cocoon could do by storing the layout for each customer as an XML file or something? Any ideas, suggestions, experiences would be helpful.
    Thanks!

    How does Tiles differ from the JetSpeed apache
    project? They both appear to be portal-like
    frameworks, or am I incorrect about that? Which is
    preferred?Frankly, I can't give you an in-depth answer to that. Maybe someone else can help with more details.
    What I can tell you is that JetSpeed seems to be more of a real portal architecture. Emphasis is placed on the framework portion, interfacing with exisiting applications. Visual layout takes second seat to this.
    Tiles on the other hand puts more emphasis on visual layout and reuse.
    Just looking at JetSpeed's visual interfacing a little bit makes me really dislike it. You build tables and such inside of a servlet, so there's a tight coupling (or at least, much tighter than with Struts/Tiles) between the presentation and logic. (I'm basing this on a JavaWorld article at
    http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/jw-07-2001/jw-0727-jetspeed.html )
    Based on your initial question, it would seem to me that tiles is much closer to what you're looking for (and likely easier to just pick up and use).
    Anyway, take all this with a grain of salt; I'm not exactly an expert on JetSpeed. =)

  • Ack!  need help with a CSS layout

    I've been struggling to layout a Dreamweaver template that
    does the following:
    You can see the files here:
    http://northfloridahealthcorps.org/Oct5/index.html
    First, I know there's way to much CSS going on here. I'm
    newer to CSS and there's a lot of code detritus that's probably
    compounding my problems. My apologies. I don't know if you need to
    anywise my code, I just want CSS that will solve the problem. Any
    suggestions that will help me set up a page that will do the
    following will be greatly appreciated.
    The layout:
    A centered 2 and 3 column layout with fixed width columns a
    footer and a header.
    I want to page to fill the browser in IE6 and 7, etc.
    regardless of the quantity of content.
    The footer needs to stay at the bottom; more content pushes
    the footer below the viewport but the footer's at the bottom even
    if the page has no text.
    There's a background image in the wrapper/container that
    helps delineate the columns. This needs to stretch vertically too.
    I've read a lot on Divs that stretch but sill can't see to
    figure out what I'm doing wrong. I have struggled and struggled
    this and I'm going nuts! Some CSS settings work for IE7 allowing
    the page to stretch but it doesn't work in IE6 or vice versa (and I
    can't get the footer to work!). What am I doing wrong?

  • Help with three column layout please

    Hello All
    I have been struggling with a three column layout to incorporate inserted images on the right. Please see http://www.greenpatchwebsites.com/ridgeway/index2.html
    At the moment I have resorted to a background image but I am not happy with the quality and lack of positioning in relation to the text.
    I have looked at lots of sites re faux / three columns etc but I can't make it work. As you will see from the attached css there are lot of divs because of the expanding box and I am getting in a muddle.
    Expert help here would be very gratefully received and I thank you in advance.

    Hi There,
    You can refer to 3 column fixed template (with header and footer) provided by DW itself. For reference how to make a 3 column layout use following code. Just save the whole of this as .html file and preview. Go through the structure and css classes in the head to understand the layout.

    Don't be overwhelmed as this is simple code only (much like your own page). You can then divide your background image and put one part in the center column (mainContent DIV) and the other in the right sidebar (sidebar2 DIV).
    Hope this helps.

  • Help with working on Word files that were created in Framemaker and saved as PDF

    Please help. I was given a pdf from a vendor that they created in Framemaker. The pdf was 2+MB. I saved it as a Word doc so I could delete sections that I don't need for our folks but the file is saving at over 20MB (after I deleted a lot of pages from it). It is so large that I cannot even email it. I've tried to zip it and also convert it back to a pdf and in both cases the file only decreases by a few hundred KB while still leaving it over 20+MB. Any idea how I can work this file to take the sections I need without it creating such a large file size? Thank you. Brian

    The contractual requirements between the vendor and your company may be the key. The contract may or may not discuss whether the vendor's permission to modify the material includes an obligation to make the documents usable. "Usable" may be construed to mean providing original files. If the vendor is required to provide originals, they may or may not be required to provide them in a common format, like MS Word, rather than the proprietary FrameMaker format they use. Their providing a PDF may completely satisfy their obligation; your lawyers may be helpful here.

    I did ask them for the source file but they haven't been forthcoming with that. I may look into the evaluation copy of FM anyway but considering the price ($868 USD through our catalogue supplier) I doubt I would be able to get a licensed copy once the evaluation runs out. I do appreciate the suggestion though. Thank you. Brian

  • Help with working script that won't convert på higher version player (As2)

    HI have an issue with a file that was created some time ago to Fplayer v6 and when I now “upgrade” it to 8-9 or 10 it does not load the xml links ;/
    I have no idea why, the file(s) works fine in the old player 6
    I have a set of xml files (note: one file for each country on a map,and the possible solution should not include to put all links in the same xml file)
    the xml looks like this (example is for Denmark file called dk.xml):  [code]
    <broadcast>
    <story>
    <lead>www.alink.com</lead>
    <URL>http://www.alink.com/</URL>
    </story>
    </broadcast>
    So in the flash file I have a set of buttons the does a few actions
    one action is to call/go to a specific frame in a MC in that frame I put the Xl loading stuff for each frame (lable)
    [code]
    headlineXML = new XML();
    headlineXML.onLoad = myLoad;
    headlineXML.load("be.xml");
    function myLoad(ok) {
                                 if (ok == true) {
                                 Publish(this.firstChild);
    function Publish(HeadlineXMLNode) {
    if (HeadlineXMLNode.nodeName.toUpperCase() == "BROADCAST") {
    content = "";
    story = HeadlineXMLNode.firstChild;
    while (story != null) {
                                 if (story.nodeName.toUpperCase() == "STORY") {
                                 lead = "";
                                 URL = "";
                                 element = story.firstChild;
    while (element != null) {
    if (element.nodeName.toUpperCase() == "LEAD") {
    lead = element.firstChild.nodeValue;
    if (element.nodeName.toUpperCase() == "URL") {
                                 URL = element.firstChild.nodeValue;
    }                                                         element = element.nextSibling;
    content += "<font size='+2' color='#3366cc'><a href='"+URL+"'>"+lead+"</a></font><br>"+body+"<br><br>";
    txt.htmltext=content;
    story = story.nextSibling;
    the button (main stage)  that calles the MC frame lable with the xml that loads the load thex and a link into a dynamic txt box (called “txt”), has this code on it: [code]
    on (press) {
                                 infoon("DK");
    on (rollOver) {
                                 DK._alpha = 50;
    on (releaseOutside, rollOut, dragOut) {
                                 DK._alpha = 100;
    so as said it works fine in FP 6 (as2)  but when published to FP 8 -9 or 10 only the XML does not load at all
    What could be the issue (I know that it is old code and it is pretty poor and should be fully upgraded but my
    skills is not on that level, I managed to make the above work from some tutorials but understanding the publishing issues
    is a bit over my head J
    I would be extremely gratefull if anyone could help me out it is really frustrating especially since the file actually works fine
    in the old player ;/

    the two most common issues when converting from as2 vp 6 to as2 vp 6+ are:
    1.  failure to initialize some variable.  (if not explicitly initialized in vp 6, understood to be zero.  in vp+, it's undefined.)
    2.  vp6 is not case-senstive.  vp 6+ is case- sensitive.
    you have both.
    body is undefined and htmltext is not the same as htmlText.  fix those and retest.

  • Need help with working in the background while doing a presentation

    Hi guys,
    I wanted to know if my MBP had a way to let me do a presentation, where on my screen I could tell it to present what I wanted it to present rather than showing every single move that I would make. If for instance, I were to open an app for looking up something to present, I wouldn't want people to see that action, but rather the things that I would put on a special window or virtual place created just for that.
    Maybe there's an app that will let me do this? What happens to me know is that when I connect the MBP to the data show presenter, everything I do gets displayed on the big screen on the wall. I want to work in the background without people seeing that. Please help. Thanks.

    The system software makes it about as easy as possible. Press fn+F7 (the pictographic mnemonic on the F7 kety is two overlapping rectangles). This will toggle the display mode between mirroring (same image on internal and external display) and spanning (each display independently contributing to the total viewable area).
    As a bonus when using Keynote (the presentation software from iWork) in a dual-screen configuration, you get one display showing the presentation and the other showing you context (the upcoming slide) and a timer. Check out the demo included with you MacBook.

  • Need help with an Outer Join

    I have the following query which has an outer join and it works perfectly and shows publication paragraph which don't have any maintenance records with a value of 0.
    However when I add to the where clause conditions such as lpm.fac_ident and lpm.start_date, the null values no longer show up in the query(see second SQL statement).
    I am new at SQL and am just trying to make this outer join work. Any help would be appreciated.
    -- THIS WORKS
    SELECT m.publication_paragraph, pm.description, pm.frequency, count(l.publication_paragraph) ACTIVITIES_PERFORMED
    FROM lpm_paragraph_mapping_table m, lpm l, pm_requirements_table pm
    WHERE m.paragraph_alias_mapping = l.publication_paragraph (+)
    GROUP BY m.publication_paragraph, pm.description, pm.frequency
    order by count(l.publication_paragraph);
    -- THIS DOES NOT WORK
    SELECT m.publication_paragraph, pm.description, pm.frequency, count(l.publication_paragraph) ACTIVITIES_PERFORMED
    FROM lpm_paragraph_mapping_table m, lpm l, pm_requirements_table pm
    WHERE m.paragraph_alias_mapping = l.publication_paragraph (+)
    AND l.fac_ident = 'EWR' AND TO_CHAR(l.start_date, 'YYYY') = '2010'
    GROUP BY m.publication_paragraph, pm.description, pm.frequency
    order by count(l.publication_paragraph);

    Hi,
    I just didn't get. The table (pm_requirements_table pm) haven't any join ???
    Regards,Forgive the ASCII art, but your query looks like:
    ----------  JOIN ----------
    | Alias M | ====> | Alias L |
    | Alias PM |
    ----------- The table pm_requirements_table is not joined at all. Unless it has only a single row, then your resultset will have 1 row for each row in lpm_paragraph_mapping_table (because of the outer join) times the number of rows in pm_requirements_table. Consider this simplified example.
    SQL> select * from t;
            ID DESCR
             1 T 1
             2 T 2
    SQL> select * from t1;
            ID DESCR
             1 T1 1
             2 T1 2
             3 T1 3
             4 T1 4
    SQL> select 1.id, t.descr, t1.descr
      2  from t, t1;
            ID DESCR      DESCR
             1 T 1        T1 1
             1 T 1        T1 2
             1 T 1        T1 3
             1 T 1        T1 4
             1 T 2        T1 1
             1 T 2        T1 2
             1 T 2        T1 3
             1 T 2        T1 4Here, my table t is the result from your join between lpm_paragraph_mapping_table and lpm. My table t1 is your pm_requirements_table. You need something more like:
    SQL> select 1.id, t.descr, t1.descr
      2  from t, t1
      3  where t.id = t1.id;
            ID DESCR      DESCR
             1 T 1        T1 1
             1 T 2        T1 2Assuming you fix that join, you can use a sub-query to apply the predicates to the lpm as Centinul showed, or, if you are on a current version of Oracle, use ANSI join syntax wich would look something like:
    SELECT m.publication_paragraph, pm.description, pm.frequency,
            count(l.publication_paragraph) ACTIVITIES_PERFORMED
    FROM lpm_paragraph_mapping_table m,
       LEFT JOIN lpm l,
          ON m.paragraph_alias_mapping = l.publication_paragraph and
             l.fac_ident = 'EWR' AND
             TO_CHAR(l.start_date, 'YYYY') = '2010'
       JOIN pm_requirements_table pm
          on something
    GROUP BY m.publication_paragraph, pm.description, pm.frequency
    ORDER BY count(l.publication_paragraph);Leaving aside the missing join, the reason why your query as posted does not work is that when there is not a match on m.paragraph_alias_mapping = l.publication_paragraph Oracle will "make up" rows form lpm with all null columns for each row in lpm_paragraph_mapping_table where there is no match. So, when you compare those made up rows from lpm, you are effectively saying where NULL = 'EWR' and TO_CHAR(NULL, 'yyyy') = '2010'. Null is never equal to anything. Any comparision against null is unknown, so the made up rows get filtered out by your predicate.
