Rs232 so slow, why?

Hello
I'm using a serial Visa at 128000bps. I'm using a handshake thats working like this: I send a char from Labview to the Pic with Visa write then the PIC responds with 5 bytes of data that are read with a Visa read. The problem is that I need  a better sampling rate, right now the PIC is sampling at 96us and Labview is taking 62ms with the write-read-display cycle. So im loosing too much data.
How can I solve this problem?
Thanks in advance.

Hi RPalma,
move the code where you set the baud rate outside the while loop. You'll only have to set this once. Also try to code  a little tidier, use left to right  coding style.  And if you have to read faster, isn't it possible to read more than one sample at a time?

Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility.  For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation.  TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible;  Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided.  Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.  Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Leopard Cache Cleaner, CockTail, and Xupport, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Backuplist
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    iBackup
    JaBack
    Silver Keeper
    MimMac
    Retrospect
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    SuperDuper!
    Synchronize Pro! X
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.

My iPad is getting slower, why ?

If it hasn't got much free storage left then that might not help. If Safari is slow then try clearing its cache : Settings > Safari > Clear Cache (and Clear History).
Also a reset might help : Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Animation Playing Slow - Why?

    Captivate 4
    Flash CS4
    AS2
    30FPS
    Goodness...
I don't know why I keep coming back to Captivate for my E-Learning needs... I just... I dunno - perhaps I hope this time around will be a miracle, or perhaps it's because I'm not a fan of anything else on the market...
    anyhow...
Besides my issues with anti-aliasing in transparent captions... and the quiz slides not working correctly... and captions disappearing... *sigh*...
I'm having an issue with my custom animations.  I've created some custom animations in Flash CS4 - nothing fancy - just some stuff sliding around, etc, lasting about... 4 seconds total maybe? I've also created a few interactive stuff, nothing too massive, just click a button to show the next text... okay... great... except - it plays SLOW when previewed/published from my captivate 4 project.
My captivate project consists of about 120 slides (yes yes, I know, it's big - I'm convincing them to cut back) - and the .swf published is around 3MB...
I have my custom animations in flash set to 30fps - and I have my Captivate 4 project set to 30 fps - so that's all groovy, I know that's not the problem...
when I publish, and play JUST the raw .swf - I would say it's reduced to about... 18-20fps on the animations, and actually, the entire project itself... if I try to play it from a published .PDF - forget about it - it slows down easily to about 10 fps - rendering the entire project useless - and HTML is somewhere in between those two...
Any idea why?? I went through my entire project, removing one animation at a time, publishing, and then putting it back in and removing another one - and this did not speed things up at all - so I'm pretty sure it's not a broken script anywhere in one of my animations (I have seen this happen in other projects before)...
Does anyone have any idea what I could look at as far as trying to figure something out?? I would try using a pre-loader, but forget it, it doesn't work either... add that to my list of crap that doesn't work in this program...
I'm stumped... is it just the file size in general?? the last project I worked on was 175 slides, and the same ratio of animations to slides - and I didn't have this problem...
Anybody come across something like this? Any possible solutions out there??
    Thank you

    Okay, fixed my problem.
The issue was being caused by the number of questions I had in the knowledge check at the end of the package.
I had 10 question pools, each with (on average) about 6 questions in it.  Each question slide had an image on it of some description.  I had increased the number of question pools from 6 to 10 with a load more questions.  Funnily enough, the Flash slowdown occurred after that update.
What I've done now is completely remove the question pools and random question slides from the Captivate e-learning package and placed them in their own package - it just means the user will have to finish the e-learning package, then go on to start the separate knowledge check.
The speed issues have been cleared up - everything is running at full (proper) speed again!

  • I purchase this approx 6 yrs ago, recently had to purchase Mac OS X Snow Leopard for my daughter new IPOD to work.  But this crazy computer is extremely slow, why??? Please help.  Very fustrated!

I purchase my Mac approx 6 years, recently purchase Mac OS X Snow Leopard disk for my daughters new IPOD to work, computer is extremely slow, others refuse to use it, why is it slow, I know very little about this computer and have hated it from day one! Please help.  The most I have on this computer would be photos, never downloaded movies, and have approx 40 songs.

The best option to make it faster would be to manually go through and erase all of the junk (files you never use) from the computer. If you want a much faster way (depending on how many files you have, this can take much longer), you can copy the files you'd like to keep to an external HD and then erase and reinstall OS X.
Erase and Reinstall OS X using the OS X Install DVD
Note: This will delete all data on the disk. Back up important files before continuing.
Erasing and then reinstalling OS X can give you a fresh start, making your computer exactly as it was whenever you received it from Apple. This can solve various problems such as corrupt system files.
Insert your OS X Install DVD into the computer's built-in disc drive (if applicable) or your computer's external USB disc drive.
Shut down the computer by going to Apple () > Shut Down…
Select Shut Down or allow the computer to shut down automatically.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter into a power source and then connect it to your Mac if you have not already done so.
Press the Power Button to turn on the computer.
Press and hold the D key on the keyboard until the Recovery partition loads. If this does not work, shut down the computer, press the Power Button to turn on the computer, and then hold in the Alt (⌥) button immediately after you press the power button. Then, select the Mac OS X Install DVD to boot from the Mac OS X Install DVD.
Select Disk Utility and then choose Continue.
Select your startup disk (Macintosh HD by default) from the left.
    Select the Erase tab.
Choose the Format pop-up menu and choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled), enter a name for your disk, and then click Erase.
After the disk is erased, choose Disk Utility > Quit Disk Utility.
Select Reinstall OS X and then choose Continue.
    Follow the instructions.
    I hope I helped.

  • Maxed out Mac Pro (nearly new) DEAD SLOW - why???

*I have always been a PC guy (animation and film production is what I do -- www.speedbumpstudios.com) but I decided to bite the bullet and go Mac. I maxed out my Mac Pro-- if it's available, I got it. It's a 15,000 machine. Great. So I've had it for a few months and the thing is so dead slow I am finding it almost unusable. My three year old PC laptop kicks its butt. Here are the symptoms.*
*Opening Photoshop takes anywhere from 1 to 3 minutes. Once it is open, if I try to open a file, it takes another couple of minutes for the finder to pop up so I can search for it.*
*iTunes regularly hangs and/or takes several minutes to load. My iPod, which is also new, sometimes cannot even connect to it (error).*
*HP scanning software takes minutes to open. Once the scan is ready to be saved, it takes minutes for finder to even offer the option to name the new file.*
*Almost all the software on this thing starts up painfully slow.*
*IMPORTANT: I have noticed that the machine runs almost all right immediately after a restart. The longer it runs, the worse these symptoms get.*
*ALSO IMPORTANT: -- I had been running Boot Camp on the machine, allowing me to boot into Windows XP. Recently bought Parallels and ran that. While this Mac never ran great, the problems seemed to get markedly worse at that point. I have since, out of desperation, removed Parellels completely, but the problems persist.*
*I am, of course, sick about how much I am paying for this machine that is supposed to be the best available and it about as useful as a boat anchor. WHAT SHOULD I DO!?*

    George, I feel your pain. I too have a maxed out Mac Pro;
    Mac Pro - 8 Core (Dual Quad-Core 3GHz)
    16GB RAM (Crucial Memory)
    4x 750GB Drives
    ATI 1900x Vid Card
    2x 30" Cinema Displays
etc etc etc .... I even have a 2-port eSATA cables installed (OWC) with a 1.5TB external drive (Iomega, and fast as the dickens!)
My machine has been in the Apple repair facilities THREE times so far (I am working with an executive relations person for 3 months now) and we are about to swap it out for a new machine because the term "ghosts in the machine" apply to many Mac Pros. In fact, the last time Apple fixed this machine was yesterday, replacing a bluetooth module, and as soon as I booted the machine it started having kernel panics (for the first time), we thought it was the RAM Riser cards being seated wrong... after making sure everything was seated properly, and doing a complete OS reinstall, it is still kernel panic-ing every hour (if I let the machine sit quietly)...so, there is a ghost in this machine that does not want to go away.
To get your situation though, MY machine has ALWAYS been much slower than the dual-G5 I replaced last April. You are not alone here. This is an 8-Core machine, ran Tiger slow and is now running Leopard only about 20% faster, which is still slower than the G5. Makes me want to cry sometimes because I paid, what, $1300 for the processor upgrade alone?
Something is wrong with your machine. I suppose you have already tried to reinstall, reformat your drives, correct permissions, etc and still found your machine wanting in the ways of speed, right? What you need to do is to contact Apple Executive Relations and tell them what is going on. Once they see that you ordered such an expensive machine (no one buys extra RAM from Apple so they will sympathize right there!) they WILL contact you and work with you until your problem is solved. The only reason they have not replaced MY machine yet (they will usually do so after the 2nd or 3rd repair attempt) is because in my case I cannot afford the downtime. Now, however, I think we have to because no one can figure out why this machine is having panics after sitting still for an hour.
Anyway, be assured this is NOT representative of Apple or the Mac Pro speed. Mac Pro's are plenty fast, and unbelievably fast with newer, Intel-based software (CS3), and even though Leopard has many many bugs it is faster than Tiger. My partner has the same machine as I do and it is so fast I think it does most of his work before he even arrives in the morning.
Work with Apple, let them fix your machine or replace it. They will.

  • Read Encoder Position is too slow, why?

I am controlling a telescope using close-loop servo mode of 7342. What I want is to use get current position of my motor using encoder and since the position value is critical to my telescope motion system I need a fast read back of that value. However, the action is very slow, about 20ms a cycle. Is there any specification on the speed of this function? Is there any solution to speed it up? Are there any new products which is faster than this card?

The NI-735x family of motion controllers allows you to read the position much faster. The position is read from a shared register that the motion board updates. Since it is a register read, the host takes very little time to get the position information.
The NI-733x/4x families of motion controllers do send a command to the motion board that the motion board has to process and then return the data. Typically this should only take a few milliseconds or less for a read. But it is dependent on what else the motion board is doing. Things that can effect the time it takes to respond to a host request are number of axes used in arc moves, and short bursts of multiple commands sent to the board. The board has a FIFO that is 16 commands deep. If you send down multiple commands followed by a read position, each command in front of the read command has to be processed first. Which could explain why you are seeing a 20 ms read.
In NI-Motion 6.1.x we have changed the driver software to help load balance the host request with the rest of the processes running on the board. In most cases this helps performance.
What version of our driver software are you using? How fast do you really need to get the position information?
    Thanks,
    Rodger S.

  • Streaming HD content to apple tv really slow, why?

Does anyone know why when I have fibre optic broadband, 100Mbps download speed that when I try and stream a HD tv show or film to my Apple tv (2) from either my mac or ipad it buffers and buffers, plays, then stops halfway through, buffers again for, well I have no idea because I always give up AND WATCH IT ON THE IPAD IN FRONT OF MY HUGE TV WHICH IS LUDICROUS!. I thought the apple tv started to play after it had calculated how much time it needed to upoad the rest of the film/tv show. On forums it's seems that it's ALWAYS the network that gets the blame, but mine is the best you can get and it still doesn't work. It can't be the network, I know using wireless is slower but at 50Mbps or 25Mbps it should still be fast enough, it can only be the Apple TV! I think it's the upgrades that seem to have made it worse and worse everytime there's a new one. Would it be worth resetting back to factory settings? or is there an obvious setting I need to look for?
    HELP IT'S DRIVING ME CRAZY!!!!!!!

    Hi,
I haven't because the BT hub is upstairs and the apple tv downstairs so it would be a long cable and not practical and the infinity ethernet port is being used for my mac. The thing is, it's sold as a wireless system and all you need is a good internet connection, apparently, cabling everything up is such a retrograde step. It all used to work perfectly, the only thing I can put it down to is the last appletv upgrade, that was when it seemed to stop working properly.

  • Glasspane repaint is slow-- why?

Greetings. I wish to use my JFrame's glasspane to do some animation that was currently being done on another component, however this other component had other aspects that took a while to draw and so I wanted to prevent having to redraw the other component, especially since most of it was not animating. Make sense?
So I moved the "animated" objects to the Glasspane (didn't actually move them there, they just get painted there in the glass pane's paint(Graphics) method), and when I call glassPane.repaint() during my animation loop, the animation is actually worse than before. It's strange though, if I instead call otherComponent.repaint() (but leave the animation painting still in the glass pane), it's nice and smooth-- it's as if explicitly calling the repaint() method in my glass pane is performing some other routines that are slowing everything down, yet NO OTHER component has it's paint method called. Why might this be?

Repaint is not a request, not a direct call.
If you are needing more of a real time paint, try looking at standard gaming loops.
The bufferstratagy can be set to 2 and get double buffered animation pretty easily.
Do a search on "game loop" for more details.

  • Contacts app is very very slow; why?

With my Z1, searching for contacts was very fast. It was real-time as I type the characters.
With my Z2, it is unacceptably slow. It can be a few minutes to search for contacts. Even when I go to Favouites where I have only eight contacts, the page takes a while to load. When I go to Contacts and search for a contact it can take a few minutes for the contact to be found. Then, when I select that contact, it can take a few minutes again to display the content.
    Why is that?
Yes, I have many contacts (maybe 4,000+) and many are duplicates linked from Exchange and LinkedIn. But even when I turn off Auto-Sync, it can still be unacceptably slow.
And I don't keep many apps open at the same time.
What are the possible things I can try?
    Thanks,
    CWL88

I'm afraid it's not possible to disable the online search. Even if you disable synchronization of contacts it will still search against the server. I will forward this as feedback internally but currently you would need to remove the ActiveSync account to stop online search. A workaround may be to use another client instead like Moxier, RoadSync or Nitrodesk.
The more contacts you have the longer it will take to load all contacts if it's no longer stored in RAM. You can force contacts to stay in RAM but to avoid it being closed, close other apps when you're not using them by pressing the lower right icon and swipe them away. But Z2 has 3GB RAM so usually this is not needed but it depends on what other apps you have any how much RAM they use.

  • Download of Mountain Lion too slow - why?

I have just bought Mountain Lion from the App Store and for some reason it is taking a very long time to download to my Macbook Pro 10.6.8. It has been more than an hour an it is still at less than approx 1/4 of the way! How long does it usually take? my internet connection is fast and working just fine.
I need to leave to work in a couple of hours max and take my computer with me and i am afraid it will not be finished by then and I'll have to interrupt the download, is this possible? can I re-start it when i get to work and have an internet connection?
    Pls help!!!!

    Thanks mackack,
My hard drive crashed on me and I got APPLE to replace it (2T) . I decided since Mountain Lion was available, why not? I moved from Snow Lep.  My IMAC is mid 2010. Reinstalling my programs has been a chore but the only real problem so far is missing serial numbers for my roxio toast pro add ons. Where did I put those??? Anyway, I am just noticing as are others in my family, that this is really slowed things down a lot. And there is the nusence of having to put in passwords and permission requests because half the world is blocked by Mountain Lion for some reason. Hopefully apple works to make this better instead of me having to junk it to go back to snow lep.
I've been struggling for a year trying to appreciate my imac more than my PC. and so far, I keep turning to my PC in crunch time. I do a lot of music production and I was expecting more. I have apple logic, but find adobe audition 1.5 more functional on my old PC.... go figure.

This is a known problem (bug 6175472) and the fix is already available in 5.2p6. Look for the script called <serverroot>/bin/slapd/admin/bin/ActivateFix6175472. Run it as:
    # <server root>/bin/slapd/admin/bin/ActivateFix6175472 <server-root>/slapd-whatever
This will shutdown the instance, modify dse.ldif, define and create a vlv index (for the tombstone entries) and start the instance back up. Beware that if any of your entries have the objectclass definition in mixed case (objectClass etc), the script might not work as expected.
    Easiest way to check is:
    # cd <server-root>/slapd-whatever/config
    # grep -i objectclass dse.ldif | grep -v objectclass
If nothing is returned, then you're all set to run the script. If not, you'll have to contact Sun Support (quoting bug 6692944) for a fix to the script that handles entries in a case insensitive manner.
