Helping a grandmother use an iMac easier

Hey all,
Recently, my grandmother has been wanting to get online. When a nearby company was forced to switch over to Windows, they got rids of a lot of their iMacs for fairly cheap, and by my father's advice, she purchased one. Now, I would like to get her computer set up by Christmas, since now she would have grandsons all over the States (myself being one), and she really wants to talk to us either via e-mail or iChat.
I have no disbelief that she can work the computer and is smart enough, however, she has terrible arthritis, and the typing position will probably extremely limit her ability to type.
Currently installed on the iMac she got is 9.2.2. Now, I can remember a somewhat stable voice system for OS 9, but 9 was clunky compared to OS X, and I think she'd do better with OS X. However, what I am most interested in is how the voice operations work in OS X, and is it better/easier than it has been? What are the limits to it, and what are its strong points?
I know these are things I COULD check myself, but currently I have a very sick mac that isn't up for testing. Any advice that you could give to assist in an elderly woman getting online and connected to the world would be appreciated. My plans thus are are as follows:
1.) Get a Dock system that allows magnification for easy viewing
2.) Small print out of what does what so she can navigate easier
3.) Setting up e-mail and internet for her and making it one click, along with a few sites she'd be interested in.
4.) Setting up voice chat on iChat for her so that she can communicate with her grandsons easier.
Any other ideas?

Thanks so much for the offer of help. I'm using 10.9.2 OSX. I have Numbers 2.3 (554). I tried the new version but it was "dumbed down" so much (to make it usable on multiple platforms) that it was of no use on iMac.
I still can't get my contacts to open in Numbers like they used to do. I have a group of five addresses in a test folder in Mail called "untitled group." But no amount of pasting, dragging, etc can get them to open up in Numbers. My "real" folder has almost 100 addresses so I can't do it one by one.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks again.

    Bob,
You can place contacts in a table In Numbers by the following methods:
    Numbers 2.3:
    drag from contacts
    Numbers 3.2
copy from contacts, then paste into Numbers
In both cases you need to open System preferences, then select the "Security & Privacy panel and allow Numbers aaccess your contacts information.

  • I need to use my iMac to run some Windows software and was thinking of using Parallels Desktop 9 to help with this. Do you still have to partition your drive with Parallels and does this leave you open to viruses?

I need to use my iMac to run some Windows software not available for Mac and was thinking of obtaining Parrallels Desktop 9 to help with this. If I use Parrallels do you still have to partitian your drive and does this leave you open to viruses?

You do not have to partition your drive - Parallels creates a disk image which contains your Windows installation. You do have to exercise anti-virus measures in the Windows partition, although such malware cannot affect the Mac filesystem.

  • I currently use a iMac OS X 10.6.8 and I cannot open iPhoto. Every time I click on iPhoto the coloured wheel comes up and lets me go no further, leaving me with no other option but to force quit the application. HELP!!

i currently use a iMac OS X 10.6.8 and I cannot open iPhoto. Every time I click on iPhoto the coloured wheel comes up and lets me go no further, leaving me with no other option but to force quit the application.
it is showing all my existing photos but will not let me click on any of them, nor will it allow me to import any new photos into iPhoto.
I am really worried that I cannot access all of my photos and even more worried as I need to back them up!!
    HELP!!

    Try repair the Library:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Using 2006 iMac running Mac OS 10.6.8.
My iTunes App (11.3.1) will not launch.
Upgraded to iTunes (11.4) but problem persists.
    Need help.

I have no answers for ya, but I do have the same problem, so we are not alone in this.
My iTunes stopped working after I did a couple of software updates that got my iTunes up to v. 11.4. Since that update, I can't get iTunes to open at all, neither from my dock nor from the Applications menu.
I'm wondering: Perhaps these latest iTunes updates are simply too advanced for my 10.6.8 operating system? If that's the case, how can I backtrack to an earlier version of iTunes that is compatible with my computer OS?
    Any thoughts?

  • NEED HELP BADLY! USING IMAC G5 AND CAN NOT INSTALL

I'm not too great with computers but I know how to install
programs easily and I've installed Flash in the past.
Today it seemed for no reason my flashplayer just stopped
    working.
So I went to reinstall it
It succesfully installed but still didnt work on any flash
    types.
So I deleted all the possible flash files on my computer and
    then tried installing again
And it gave me an error message saying: 1008:9,-5000
I don't know what this means and I don't know how to fix it
and would extremely appreciate someone helping me out...
I use an Imac G5 (not intel core)
My main browser is Safari but I will use Firefox if needed
If you could just send an email to [email protected]
I'll get back to you as soon as I can
    THANKYOU IN ADVANCE!!!!!!!!

I've used the Free Version of SuperDuper for 3 - 4 years to make a bootable backup of my MacBook. It always makes a perfect copy. I don't use the paid version of SD, but from what I gather the main advantage of the paid version is you can make a back up of only those files that have changed since the last back up using Smart Update or Copy Newer. This takes only a few minutes rather than the 1 1/4 hours it takes me to do a complete back up using the free version. SD won't let you use Smart Update or Copy Newer unless you pay.
From your post, you want to copy a few of your User files to an external drive? I'm not sure why you need SuperDuper to do this. Why not just drag those files to the external drive? Sure, you're not able to schedule this for an automatic back up, but I'm not sure that's what SD is for. However, it looks like they have shell scripting to do other things, and there is a selection for included scripts under Options. There may be something in there for you.

How do i update my camera raw? I can not find the download update I've just brought a new d4s and I'm using the iMac with cs6 version. PLEASE HELP..

The Adobe auto updater is pretty decent in CS6.  Just go to the Photoshop Help menu > Updates.
You will be able to update ACR, Photoshop and Bridge right there, if there are in fact updates available.

Try cleaning the disc, and be sure you have the right one.
If that doesn't help, it sounds like it's time for a trip to the Apple Store.

can i use my imac g5 just as a display monitor if i buy a 13" macbook pro?  the g5 screen is larger.   can it hook up to the laptop?  thanks for any help!

You need to use a product such as ScreenRecycler to do that. All of those products work over a network connection; direct video in isn't available on an iMac G5.

    Hello there, susanmeehan.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great information on how to create a playlist with iTunes:

sorry for the format - my 1st question...

    thanks Kappy.
the computer has beem working for years after my 1st ram removal; but i may have pushed them back too hard. i did pull firmly - tried pulling up slightly; tried tugging on the sides of the stick; pulling in pulses. the only thing i have not tried is using needle nose plyers with protection on the tab film itself.
have you had the pulling harder ever work? or break the tab?

  • HT204053 I use my iMac to help a friend with an IPAD and a different Apple ID to transfer their existing cps to iTunes on their iPad.  How can I do this without the content being merged into my own Apple ID Account

I have an IMac which is my main computer and two IPads and an Ipod Nano.
Obviously we use these in sync as an when required via Itunes.
I have recommended a friend to have an IPAD2 and she wishes to load some of her existing cds into her Itunes Account.
If I wish to do this with my own, it is simple as we simply use the Imac which transfers content into Itunes.
However, my friend does not have a separate computer so I wish to load her CD's into Itunes and then sync to her Ipad without interfering with my own library and using her Apple ID.
    How can I achieve this?

" how can I sync my iphone to my mac book without losing all the music and pictures on it?"
You cannot.  Copy everything you want form the old computer to the new one, then sync it.
it basically says you have to erase your iphone to sync to a new itunes!
Correct Iphone will sync, or manually manage, with one and only one computer/library at a time. Syncing, or manually managing, to another will indeed erase the current content.

  • PLEASE HELP! Torn between buying used G4 iMac and G5 iMac

I use Adobe Creative Suite 2. I do a lot of work for magazines, so I work with large files in 300 dpi. I tend to not use more than one program at a time, but will sometimes have several files open at once in Photoshop. I need a computer that can handle that kind of workload. I'm looking at a 17" Flat Panel 1 GHz G4 iMac with 1 GB of RAM and a 17" 2 GHz G5 iMac with 1 GB of RAM. I used G4 iMacs in college and they worked beautifully, but that was back when Photoshop was in version 6. I have used G5 iMacs at several onsite projects running CS2 without any lagging, yet those are very expensive. I do not want to spend the money on the G5 unless I really have to.
Here is the situation. I purchased a used HP Media Center last year and have never been able to get CS2 to run; despite the fact that the machine has a 2.5 GHz AMD Athlon 64 Processor, 1 GB of RAM and 256 MB Videocard. I am worried that I might purchase a used computer only to find the software will not run, or that in a year from now that I will have to sell the used computer and get a new one. This is what happens to me every year and I do not have the money to keep doing this, especially since I really do not have loads of money. Every year I end up buying something somewhat like what I need, but not exactly what I need based on costs. I need something that will work for years to come at the lowest price possible.
I have received opinions from about 15 people that all say if I buy an iMac G4 that it will work beautifully and that I will never go back to PC. One person told me that I am better off getting a G5 machine. I've spoken with Adobe and HP and they will not give me a straight answer. I would like to know if this machine will run CS2 effectively?

I could agree with the above on so many levels, but I think, with what you're doing, that a G4 is suitable. You do not need to go intel for what you'll be doing over the next few years and I think it boils down to which you prefer the look of. I have a G5, specs below, and I am waiting for a G4 to come my way one day. Gorgeous machines. Something about the, that the iMac G5 lacks. I love the G5, but it's lost it's wow factor with me, and my gf even has the 24"! I have a photo of all the current sized iMacs as we own them all (brother owns 17").
    Go with a G4 - they're gorgeous.
Go with a G5 if you're doing a lot of work
Go with intel if you need to have hardware insurance, windows or the latest thing on the market.
I would like to add that you'll never go back to windows once you've switched. Ever.

  • Can I use my iMac as a 'display' for my MacBook Pro?

Hi all, I am really hoping someone can help me here.
I am wondering if I can use my 24" iMac as a display for my MacBook Pro (both running Snow Leopard).
It's my father's 80th birthday party in about 24 hours time. I am doing up the music and slideshow (thanks Apple - so easy!).
My plan was to simply take my iMac and use it. However, I managed to drop the wireless keyboard (darn those dogs) and now my keyboard won't work. I have no backup keyboards here (gave the wired one to Dad to use with his Mac mini). I live in a country area with no access to a Mac store and it will take more than 24 hours to get a new one. Went to my local 'other computer' general store last night: I really don't want to buy an ugly black keyboard..... I have just had a great idea:
Can I network my MacBook Pro and use it as the source for the slide show and simply use the iMac as a display? I have plenty of DVI adaptors but am just not sure how I would go about the software side of things? Or should I simply buy an ugly PC keyboard (and if I do, will the WIndows button work as an Apple button???)
Any suggestions would be really appreciated.
    Thanks!

The imac 24 can't be used as a monitor over a DVI connection or the like, Suzanne, but you may be able to achieve what you want to using "Screen Sharing" by networking the two computers. This lets your MBP effectively control what is running on the iMac.
See HERE for the basic setup. For information about how to access the "shareable" screen from the MBP see HERE.
One possible problem may be actually getting this set-up on the iMac if it is not already enabled, however, unless you can borrow a keyboard from someone (your password may have to be entered to enable it). You may be able to get around this, if necessary, using the "keyboard viewer" (which you can place in the menubar using System preferences > Keyboard, if you don't already have it there).
    Cheers
    Rod
