Hex colors in Indesign

It would be really great if inDesign has teh ability for HGEX colors -- web safe etc.
Especially because it seems I am now designing in indesign and trying to match an html5 widget to what i have done in indesign.

  • Exporting correct Hex colors via scripting

    Hello all,
    I need to export the fillColor of a paragraph style via scripting.
    I can get the fillColor property of the paragraph style, and can also convert CMYK to Hex. However, I do realize that the color values shown in InDesign are in whatever Color Space the document is using.
    My question is, is there a native API to convert the color values to a web safe color value? If not, how do I go about mapping the colors?
    Additionally, I see that Adobe internally knows how to convert it to a proper hex color (screenshot attached - note the color property in the Export Tagging pane). If I cannot use some native API, is there a way to access the text in that pane?
    Thanks all, in advance!

    @DerKäse (btw. funny name) – there is an add() method for colors that will take a Object Color as argument.
    Use that for your purpose.
    Here an example for RGB:
    var myDoc = app.documents[0];
    var myColorName = "myNewRGBColor";
    if(!myDoc.swatches.itemByName(myColorName).isValid){
        var myNewColor = myDoc.colors.add(
                name:myColorName,
                colorValue:[255,255,0], //A bright yellow
                model:ColorModel.PROCESS,
                space:ColorSpace.RGB
    Here one for CMYK:
    var myDoc = app.documents[0];
    var myColorName = "myNewCMYKColor";
    if(!myDoc.swatches.itemByName(myColorName).isValid){
        var myNewColor = myDoc.colors.add(
                name:myColorName,
                colorValue:[0,0,100,0], //A bright yellow
                model:ColorModel.PROCESS,
                space:ColorSpace.CMYK
    Hope, that helps…

  • RGB color in inDesign changes (washed out) after exporting it to PDF

    Hi,
    I am new to InDesign and i have a hard time figuring out how could I export my InDesign file to PDF without affecting the color.
    This is what I do.
    1. I created a new document with Transparency Blend Space set to Document RGB
    2. I created a box using the rectangle tool and filled it up with RGB color, R=126 G=12 B=110
    3. The color in Indesign is just how i wanted it, however, the problem arises when i export the file now to PDF
    4. Instead of the color i wanted, the color was changed to a lighter color, or washed out.
    5. THis happens even in text have the same RGB setting.
    How could I export it to PDF with the same color, without being washed out?
    I really appreciate your help on this. Thanks.

    That sounds like the Color Picker, which works a bit differently in ID than in Illustrator or Photoshop. If the cursor is not in one of the RGB fields when you say OK you won't get RGB color. You can see this by noting the text in the Add ... Swatch button. My guess is you added the color as the CMYK conversion which is a bit lighter.
    You might want to use the panel menu in the Swatches panel instead, or the new swatch button at the bottom of the panel while holding down the Alt key to open the new swatch definition dialog. You want to create a Process color and change the type to RGB, then enter the values in the RGB fields. Or if what you want is really Pantone 249U you can define a Spot swatch and choose Pantone Solid Uncoated and then specify the 249. I'll warn you though, that CS6 uses Lab values for displaying spot colors and 249U is considerably lighter than either the RGB you specified or the 249C. In earlier versions the book value conversions were used. Even when using Lab display values through Ink Manager in CS5, the coated and uncoated swatches incorrectly look the same in ID, and in Illustrator CS5 you would need to turn on overprint preview to see a difference.
    Here are a couple of screen captures from PDFs exported from ID CS5 and CS6 using High Quality Print. The colored boxes with the lables were pasted from Illustrator CS5 to be sure I was using the same color definitions and that theywere behaving as native objects. Below are the same boxes placed:
    and here is how the screen looked in CS6 in ID (notice the difference in the placed .ai file -- the screen preview is NOT using the Lab values, although it exports with them):
    I don't know what the content is and how you present it, but it doesn't sound like a web page. That said, if you choose Web for intent in Document Setup you can still use print size paper sizes for the document and change the rulers after the doc is created to read inches or millimeters or other units of your choice instead of pixels and the file will use default RGB swatches and default to RGB when making new colors.

  • Gif images, pixels and hex colors

    I'm not a java developer, though I at least have attempted to learn it. This may be a strange place to ask this question but java keeps coming up in my search so what the heck!
    I am a highschool biology teacher-to-be and I am trying to design a lesson about DNA transcription and translation. I want the students to play a game where they take hex color codes (codons) and place a color card (amino acid) the hex code represents so that they build a big pixelated picture (the protein). I don't want to do the work of writing down the hex code for each and every pixel of the image, and was hoping there was some way to reveal as a list the hex color of each pixel in some sort of ordered fashion. I tried just dragging a gif file into a text program, but that didn't do it, ha!
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

  • Converting to spot colors in InDesign

    Hi, Im trying to create a two color job in InDesign that will be black and red. The problem I have is that our imagesetter is not separating the colors.
    I was told that the red color needs to be a spot color in InDesign for the imagesetter to know to separate the colors. Otherwise, if the colors are not set as a spot color then it sends the file as CMYK separations or grayscale separations.
    The question I have is how can I change the images (and text) in my InDesign file to be set as a spot color? Thanks in advance.

    You can import a grayscale image and use your two spot colors to create a mixed ink color, or you can create a duotone in PS, or if is line-art a multicolor DCS file. If it is line-art you can also create two separate grayscale or bitmap (black & white) images of each element in PS line them up in ID and apply your spot color to each. Too bad you can not color each layer PSD grayscale file in ID.

  • Importing a .psd flat or layered gives different colors in InDesign

    I have an RGB .psd file, with sRGB profile. When it's Placed in InDesign, the colors look like expected.
    When in Photoshop the Background layer is double clicked (to make it a layer), and the file is saved without any changes,
    the colors in InDesign look dull (like if there's some kind of CMYK-simulation going on).
    This happens with all other images on the page where it is Placed.
    On other pages, the flat file still looks bright and RGB-ish, but as soon as a layered file is added, the colors change.
    As soon as I delete the layered image, the colors jump back to bright. It happens in Print, Web and Digital Publishing modes.
    I don't want all this! (I use InDesign to make an onscreen presentation, and I like the look of the RGB-images, which are Cinema 4D renders, but I need some layering as well)
    Any ideas on this?
    Thanks!

    Well, it is a document setting. When there is transparency on the page, ID switches to what is essentially overprint preview mode to show you more accurately what is going to happen to your output. Transparency flattening is handled per spread, so any transparent object affects everything on the spread.

  • I am having difficulty installing Pantone Plus Series colors into InDesign CC 2014.

    I cannot figure out how to install PANTONE Plus Series Solid Coated 336 New Colors into InDesign CC 2014. I have installed the PANTONE color manager on my hard drive. Now what?

    There was a thread on this recently....
    You have to install one of the v2 fanbooks as the 336 supplement is now obsolete. Select the book you want, then from the file menu export to the programs of your choice.

  • ILife crayons seem not to match the html hex color codes?

    anyone to confirm that apple did not care about matching html hex color conventions with its crayons. eg. honeydew crayon looks so much different from f0fff0

    I don't think those crayons are used for Web accurate colors. They're just descriptive if you're not particular about a specific shade.
    You might want to look at an extension of Apple's Color Picker here.

  • Please HELP! Hex Color Code MovieCLip

    Hi!
    How can i get the hex color code of a movieclip?
    Thanks a lot!

    To do it at runtime you can use something like the following, where mc representa whatever the instance name of your movieclip is...
    import flash.display.BitmapData;
    var bmd:BitmapData = new BitmapData(mc.width,mc.height);
    bmd.draw(mc);
    var pixelValue:uint = bmd.getPixel(1, 1); // specify a point where the color is
    trace(pixelValue.toString(16)); // this outputs the hex color value

  • Hex colors not the same

    I'm trying to change the background color of an xspf music player from black ( as in Roddy's tutorial ). I chose the Safe Hex colors, and wanted to try out a few to judge what they looked like.
    However: whatever code I write in, I ONLY get black or various shades of blue.
    Any ideas ?
    Thanks, Kay.

    Hallo Star-Fish, thanks for answering. This is the URL:

    I just checked on a Windows PC and the page is blank- not even a blue rectangle. In iWeb, it looks exactly the same as this page viewed on a mac; ie. the player hasn't properly established itself either.
    I'll post my HTML code here too- perhaps you can spot the faults:

    however .. rather than use a defined color i would like to do summin as such
    webbie = "arora -bg "#222222""
    however that gives my rc.lua a headache and a crash back to default
    (hope this is enough info)
    i would like to set an x app to a hex color defined in my rc.lua unless there is a better way

    so i read up a bit more ... rgb.txt is depricated and i found the answer lies in setting xresources.  the command to put in xinitrc i get however when i define colors in .Xresources they dont seem to work for arora
    assuming i understand the wiki i should be able to define colors   i am not sure how much i wanna set as such as im very sure im not entirely understanding ... i would then :
    arora.background: #222222
    ill look more into this unless some one can explain better to me. sometimes i need to reread things 4 or 5 times and im not understanding the wiki as its not working
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/X_resources
    is what im reading through in case anyone is familiar with this page

    Saludos

  • Hex Color Element

    Is there a way in RTF to use an XML element for a background color in cell? The element is in a Hex format. I am looking to have the Level Name cell background color equal to the Hex color referenced in Level_Color.

    <G_RISKLEVELNAME>
    <LEVEL_NAME>VH - H</LEVEL_NAME>

  • Matching Raster and Vector RGB color in InDesign CS3.

    We print on a Durst Lambda RGB imaging device to photographic paper. All color management is done as an early bind (raster files are converted to the printer's color space and vector colors are chosen from a palette database). So basically the files must go through InDesign without any color change in raster or vector information. We have clients that require specific RGB builds for logo colors the are present in both their raster and vector files.
    Color Management is set to "North American General Purpose 2" with "RGB: Preserve Embedded Profiles" selected.
    1) The file is exported as a PDF 1.4, High Quality, PDF/X_None.
    2) The PDF was ripped on a Cheetah RIP (Jaws level 3) with no color management on.
    3) Solid raster colors such as 0-255-0 will reproduce as 0-255-1.
    4) The color differences between the raster and vector are usually 1-4 points.
    5) The vector is consistent as was input in the programit's only the raster that changes. When you are trying to match raster and vectors logo colors it is a killer.
    However, I can go into the InDesign (or Illustrator) color settings and turn color management off (This is our current workflow). In doing this the RGB working space uses the monitor profile and "color management policies" are set to OFF. With these settings the RGB raster and vector match. The problem with this work flow is two fold:
    1) We have other devices than our RGB Durst Lambda that can use the InDesign color managementVutek flat bed 3200 and grand format 3360.
    2) We have had many occurrences where the custom "color management off" settings have reverted back to the default "North American General Purpose 2"without any intervention.
    I have tried this with different RIP's with the same results.
    Does anyone have an idea to create a simple PDF workflow and keep the color information consistent?
    Program: InDesign CS3 5.0.2
    Platform: Mac OS 10.5.2
    Computer: G5 tower with 4 gigs of RAM

    I believe that setting is an old Illustrator setting that has been saved to effectively turn the color management off. The monitor profile effects the image displayedit doesn't effect the color transform.
    Anyway, the color management I want to use is the "North American General Purpose 2".
    To reiterate:
    The procedure:
    1) The file is exported as a PDF 1.4, High Quality, PDF/X_None.
    2) The PDF was ripped on a Cheetah RIP (Jaws level 3) with no color management on.
    The Problem:
    3) Solid raster colors such as 0-255-0 will reproduce as 0-255-1It changes from the original raster color placed in InDesign.
    4) The color differences between the raster and vector are usually 1-4 points.
    5) The vector is consistent as was input in the programit's only the raster that changes. When you are trying to match raster and vectors logo colors it is a killer.
    To summarize, the color of the raster file will change from the original that was place into the documenteven though nothing was selected in InDesign that would change the color (i.e. profile conversion to an output profile or a transparency effect used). The change is slightbut there.
