Hey Siri Without Being Plugged In

This really isn't a question, but more of a comment.  As of January 1 many cities, including mine of Austin, went totally hands free when operating a cell phone while driving.  Hey Siri works great for this, but you have to have the phone plugged in to use it.  There needs to be an option to use the service while the phone isn't plugged in.  I realize there is a concern about draining the battery by using the service, but there must be a way to do this.  I don't always have the ability to plug in the phone while mobile.
Thanks.

The problem with laws like the one you're describing is that the address the wrong part of the problem. The problems caused by using cellphones when driving are not the result of what your hands are doing. The problems are caused by the way interacting with the phone diverts your attention. There is no way to safely use a phone while driving other than to set up the navigation or the music and then leave it alone.

  • Is there a way to do a firmware update without being plugged into a power source?

I have a Macbook 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and the indicator light on the Magsafe power cord is not lighting up. I know the cord works because I have tried it on a different computer but it is only this macbook that it doesn't work on. I have reset the SMC. I do need to do a firmware update but when I try to do the update it the firmware it will not let me update because the computer doesn't know that its connected to a power source. When I look at the battery life indicator on the right hand corner it says that its calculating but never changes.
I was using the computer running on battery life and it turned off. I was able to turn the computer on. The computer powers on and off but i'm assuming its going to run the battery power. I don't have another battery to try on this computer. Are there any suggestions?
Firmware update 1.4 is what i'm trying to install

My Mac will not stay on for even 5 minutes without being plugged in.  It just completely shuts itself off.  It started doing it and I went in and cleaned up some stuff, but it just kept getting worse.  Not I'm lucky to get 5 minutes out of it.  Why?

  • Why does my MacBook Pro shut down when I load YouTube, Minecraft and the like without being plugged in?

This doesn't happen every time I load YouTube, but is consistent with Minecraft (I expect it is a Java or Flash problem). If I open Minecraft and start playing without being plugged in, my computer will undoubtedly shut down at some point within 30 minutes from that time. It could just be a couple minutes or up to about 30, but it will happen no matter what. You may be thinking: "he just ran his battery down", but most of these occurances have happened while the computer has more than 80 percent battery left. Also possibly worth noting, the computer shuts down, it doesn't hibernate and it doesn't have a kernel panic, it is just as if I held the power button down. Any thoughts?

Most likely a Flash issue. Try uninstalling then reinstalling your current copy of the Flash plugin.
Troubleshoot Flash Player | Mac OS
If that doesn't help, try deleting Flash cookies.

And depending on which browser is being used, definitely empty the cache more often.

  • If plugged into the power supply, should the Cinema Display A1081 standby light come on without being plugged into a mac

I was given an old Cinema Display A1081 a few years ago. I am trying to test it and want to know if plugged into the power supply, should the standby light come on without being plugged into a mac?  I don't want to buy a DVI to mini display adapter if it isn't working.  One thing I did do was plug Monitor power in and then the USB plulg into my PC laptop and my iPhone charger USB plug into the back of the monitor.  I am able to charge my iPhone this way so I know that the power supply is working. But I can't tell if the monitor itself is workign as no ligths are on. (PS:  I am purchasing my first Mac so I am a complete newb but very proficient with PCs) Thanks so much for your help.

Just a final question about Sleep mode - does this have any negative effects on the life or performance of the laptop? I'm so used to Shutting down the laptop each day that I worry about Sleep mode having some sort of drain on the components or something.
There are only two practical differences between Sleep and Shut Down:
    1. Sleep will wake instantly, so you don't have to wait for startup.
    2. Sleep will drain a new, fully charged battery after several days without being woken or plugged in. If you shut down, the battery charge lasts much longer. Obviously, if you only sleep it overnight, you'll still have plenty of battery left in the morning.
Don't sleep it more frequently than necessary, though. Frequently turning the backlight and hard drive off and on can shorten their life. Just do what's reasonable. I usually leave mine awake until I have to transport it in a bag, along with sleeping it overnight. On battery, I'll sleep it more often to preserve battery.

  • MacBook will not run without being plugged in.

First off, I've updated everything I can find! I've reset the SMC and read through and did anything that looked like it might help. Here's the problem... I can't turn on my MacBook without the power adapter being plugged in, if it is running and I unplug it turns off. When I press the button on the battery to see if it is fully charged it is missing one dot, yet the plug light is green and not amber. On my screen it shows battery power is at 87% and it has the little plug icon in the battery, so it's not charging my battery. I am scared that when the battery drains my laptop wont work since it is slowly draining (was at 100% when the problem started a few days ago). This really is a big inconvience because I am chained to the power adapter and since it is magnetic I accidentally unplug it when I am not at a desk or table. So if anyone has any ideas please let me know! Help!

Haha i know i was just kidding about the apple joke, its only because i am one of the first purchasers of the iPhone and they only gave us $100 back instead of $200, but o well... this problem is getting even weirder, now my battery isn't recognized in mac os x, and i've tried all the trouble shooting methods. i'm taking this in saturday to the apple store. i'm starting to believe that its a battery issue, which is why i was only able to work off power since the new firmware. luckily its still in warranty and they'll issue me a new battery. who knows, maybe the firmware short circuited my battery?

  • Wireless synching without being plugged in?

I've ignored wi-fi synching for ages... figured it would drag down operations and simply take too long.  (In the old Palm days, Hot Synch via cable was dramatically fast compared to that over wi-fi.)
So, I finally tried it.  Fast and easy, however...
Apparently, you have to be plugged into a power source!
Well, that's a drag and hardly "wireless" (I guess that's why Apple calls it "wi-fi" synching and not "wireless" ).  Plus, the Mac has to be open and running, too, right?  Given all that, isn't it just as easy to take the iPad to the MacBook Pro and connect it?!
Or, am I missing something here?
Without giving it much thought, I originally figured that you could just turn on your i-device and sync it!

The device does not have to be awake and running, when plugged in, to hot sync.  The reason for having it plugged in is that, when running on battery, the wifi radio is turned off when the device sleeps (to save power), while when it is plugged in, the wifi radio remains on all the time.
You can force a wifi sync when the device is not plugged in however.  As long as iTunes is running on your computer, you can initiate a wifi sync either from iTunes or the device itself (settings -> general -> iTunes wi-fi sync).  It will still sync when the device is running on battery if you initiate the sync.
Of course the Mac has to be open and running, and iTunes needs to be open to - the sync is still managed by iTunes, and the Mac has data being written to it and read from it during the sync.  Whatever device you sync to has to be running - even when you sync to iCloud, if Apple shuts off its servers, that ain't going to work either
As to the convenience, thats a matter of opinion - I generally just leave iTunes open and hidden on my MacBookPro, so I can just initiate a sync at the end of the day from my devices, or it happens overnight while they are plugged in charging up for the next days use.  But I do find it nice to not have to take both iPhone and iPad into the den, plug them in, initiate the sync, unplug them and then plug them back in to their power adapters to charge up overnight.

  • I can't get my new MuVo Fm to turn on without being plugged in, HE

  • Is it possible for an iPhone 3GS to charge without being plugged in?

When I turned off my phone, it was at 60% power. The day after, I turned it on and it was at 80%. This is NOT a joke. What happened?

The battery percentage indicator needs to be calibrated. For that, you need to drain down the battery way to 3-4% and charge it back to 100% without any interruptions. Let it get charged for 15 min more even if it's showing that it's fully charged and can be disconnected. No hardware problems as such!

  • My iPhone 4S won't stay turned off without being plugged into a charger . I reset it and nothing .. Help

    Please help !!

Clean the iPhone charging port with a clean dry toothbrush. See if better. If still problem and if there is Warranty or AppleCare make Genius reservation or set up service and take to Apple. If no coverage, clean again with toothbrush and small amount of Isopropyl Alcohol. If still problem, next step would be to replace the iPhone charging port with attached flex cable. Apple would handle this with Replacement iPhone 4S for $199.

  • My MacBook won't turn on or stay on without being plugged in

I am studying abroad and brought it into an iStorm and they told me I needed a new battery, so I bought a new battery but that hasn't solved anything.  My charger works fine, my Mac is all up to date, and I've reset everything I can.  Do I just have to wait till I get back to America to bring it into and apple store?

depends on how long you are still going to be in the place to are at... i would take it there and see how long it would take to fix it, if it longer then how long you are staying, no, if not then go and do it. it is all the same weither it is in london or in the united states,
    hope this helps , christian

My 5C has just done the most recent update, yet I can't turn it on without it being plugged into iTunes through a laptop. However, I don't have iTunes on my laptop because it's my school one. Ideas please?

If you are seeing the USB cord and iTunes icons on your screen something has gone wrong with the update. You will have to restore your iPhone. The only way to do this is to connect the phone to your computer that is running iTunes.

  • My volume doesnt work and when i press the volume button it shows the headphones volume on the screen without any headphones being plugged in. what can i do to fix this?

My volume on my iPad doesnt work, when I press the voulme button it shows the headphones volume on the screen without any headphones being plugged in. Is there a fix for this?

Try going to settings> general > reset> reset all settings. If that doesn't work. Place a headphone jack in there and just pull it out a couple times. The problem is either your iPad setting is stuck or there is actually a hardware problem and moving the jack in and out might fix it
