HFM- General Advice

Hi guys,
I'm new to HFM and I'm starting to work in a project. I'd like to know if you have any general advice you could share about two topics.
1. Initial stage. Do you have any question list you usually apply to customers to evaluate their applications? Is there any questions guide we should follow? Which are the main questions we should ask if the client does not have a HFM application?
2. Which advice would you give to a consultant starting to work in a support project (let's say, the client has already a HFM application)?
3. Accounts: these are part of my current nightmares. I know how to build an account in the classic way (HFM client). But how do you build the accounts in EPMA? Do you usually do that one by one? Even if there are more thant 2000 accounts?
I know these are silly questions, buy I do not have any HFM experience. And I was given a quick and basic training before starting to work in a project.
I really appreciate any advice you could give me.
Thank you!
Guy

Hi,
1. Initial stage. Do you have any question list you usually apply to customers to evaluate their applications? Is there any questions guide we should follow? Which are the main questions we should ask if the client does not have a HFM application?
** First of all as far as I know there is no guide for this,
In Initial stage you need to understand the business flow, roles of different users, level of their consolidation and calculations. Apart from this, U need to find out that How they capture the data across entities, cost centers,etc.. this will help you to decide the dimensionality to be used for application.
Moreover, Be curious and ask as many questions as you can from client, this is the best time when U can get every minute details for understanding
2. Which advice would you give to a consultant starting to work in a support project (let's say, the client has already a HFM application)?
In this case the most important thing is to get the Knowledge of application correctly whether it is from KT or from docs. Don't just take the knowledge on paper and verbally, But it is very important to check it with your hands, it will clear your confusions straight away and mainly it will freeze ur understanding.
Be curious and ask as many questions as you can for application working.
Get the handover of documents properly and take a track of work done in past or changes done before joining support.
Keep track of the montly activities properly and process to be followed to work at Support.
3. Accounts: these are part of my current nightmares. I know how to build an account in the classic way (HFM client). But how do you build the accounts in EPMA? Do you usually do that one by one? Even if there are more thant 2000 accounts?
** Yes, multiple members can be added to EPMA via flat files and through interface tables.
This is a link for Flat File:
http://thetravelingconsultant2.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/epma-101-loading-dim-members-via-flat-file.pdf
This is admin guide for EPMA:
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E17236_01/epm.1112/epma_admin.pdf
As you are new you need to go through these files and specially admin guide which will give you the way to work on EPMA and what are the capabilities of EPMA.
I Hope this is what you were looking for.
Please tag it as Answer/Helpful if you find it useful.

  • IMovie 6 and general advice

    Amateur iMovie user (but not bad at it!), some general advice requested...
    1. Is iMovie HD 6 worth buying (seems like there's a bit of grief associated with it), or can you get the same effects and titles etc with a 3-D party plugin to iMovie 5? I only bought 5 six months ago - I'm a bit behind the times...
    2. Is it worth just saving up and buying, say, Final Cut HD Express or something and forgetting iMovie altogether?
    3. Or would you forget about all the software upgrades, save up and buy an HD camera?
    Cheers
    Perry

    Perry,
    The questions you ask are good ones. But I don't think others can answer them for you.
    What kind of movies do you make and how often?
    Have you looked at the new features in iMovie HD 6? You can see some of them highlighted in the right column of this page.
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/imovie/
    Remember too that iLife '06 is more than just iMovie. How much do you use the other iApps? The new iWeb is cool (almost worth the cost of the upgrade by itself - to me at least) as are the upgrades to iPhoto and GarageBand.
    The new version of GarageBand allows you to work on the audio track of your iMovie projects. To me that's the best new feature of iMovie and it's not even really a feature of iMovie!
    Final Cut Express HD is the next step if you feel like you can't do what you are trying to do with iMovie. Do you feel like you've outgrown iMovie? FCE is great software but it's got a learning curve.
    Finally, I'd say hold off on the HD camera for now. The prices will continue to drop over the next few years and most people don't even have an HD television yet. Do you? If not, I say get the HD television first.

  • Russian and Chinese Flash movies - general advice needed please

    Hi all -
    This is a plea for some general 'jumping off' advice. I am an experienced Flash developer but now have a request to convert an existing xml-fed movie into both Russian and Chinese. I speak neither of these languages so we have had the content of the movie translated by a professional translation service.
    The movie contains both png/jpgs with embedded text - created in Fireworks and also (for the bulk of the content) external xml files. I still need to be able to develop in an English environment - so purchasing a full version of Flash/Fireworks in Russian/Chinese would be folly. How should I go about this? If it is a matter of fonts - where should I get them from? And are there any considerations to be met with regards the xml files? Basically, I would really appreciate some general advice on this subject as it is completely new ground for me.
    Much obliged,
    Hugh

    Thank you. Having the airports all in proximity was the key and, of course, I eventually found the same advice in an apple help file. I set the new AExtreme up as WDS main with an ethernet disk for backups and music. An old AExtreme as WDS remote serves the Cube by ethernet and a usb printer. An AExpress as WDS remote serves one stereo. The other AExpress is WDS relay serving another stereo and helping the network reach the office where the last old AExtreme is WDS remote with another USB printer. The 3 mac laptops are happy. I have yet to try any PCs.

  • Parallels general advice

    I have a 2011 Mac Mini and I'm about to purchase a MacBookPro and wanted to be able to run some of my work related Windows based software on the Mac's using Parallels Desktop 8 for Mac software. Both Macs will be running Mountain Lion and I would be installing Windows 7 Home Premium.  I haven't installed Parallels yet and was looking for some general advice or precaustions that anyone might have relating to the installation and use of the software and the various ways of viewing/accessing the Windows side.
    Any thoughts or advice is appreciated, thank you.

    Thank you for the informative replies. This is exactly the kind of info I was looking for. A bit more information about my Mac Mini, I do have 8GB of RAM and I recently replaced the original HDD with a 128GB Corsair Force GS SSD that has the OS and all applications running on it. I use a Firewire 800 connected G Tech HDD and Netgear Ultra 4 Plus NAS for file storage.
    The main purpose for Parallels for me would be when I get the MacBookPro. I am an audio video integrator and do home control programming, etc. and the programming software is not available in Mac versions. I actually have a dedicated custom built desktop Windows 7 PC but that is my CD ripping, video conversion/editing, music playing machine that I don't want to "infect" with any software that is not related to the above mentioned functions. I like working in the Mac environment for my daily mail, MS Office, etc. and most of my clients use Macs so it helps me stay current with what they are using. That is why I would like to be able to run my control programming software on the Mac Mini using Parallels. I thought it would be nice to be able to do the programming on the Mac Mini with the 24" monitor then just bring it along to the job site on the MacBookPro that I'm about to buy (my 9 uear old Dell laptop I was using is on its last leg!).
    I did look through Getting Started/User Guide from Parallels web site and will check out the Parallels Mac Forum to prepare.
    Just so I understand how Parallels works, it apparently does not create a separate partition for Windows but rather runs Windows side by side with my Mac OSX within the same partition? Is this a correct assumption? Also, if I have drives like the above mentioned G Tech that are formated for Mac OSX will I be able to see and access those drives from the Windows side running on Parallels?
    Thanks again for the great information.

  • JT400 General Advice Please

    I am looking at developing some code to access the AS/400 via program calls. What I am looking for is a bit of general advice on a couple of items: -
    1. Connection Pooling. Seems like a good idea. Are there any pitfalls / traps that I should be aware of in your experience.
    2. Once I have the data I was thinking of storing it in Hashtables for ease of retrieval. Are there any better ways of storing the information for improved speed / system resources.
    TIA
    Richard

    HI
    When you mean accessing AS/400 via program calls , what programs do you really mean
    You can access AS/400 data using the JDBC connection like you do against any other database, you can also make use of the access classes in the AS/400 tool box API to invoke native programs in 400 which can return data to your Java program.
    I dont think there is any pitfalls using connection pooling , it can only improve the speed of your applications
    How much data are you thinking about storing in HAshtable ,If you are thinking about storing small amount of information for faster retrieval , that is fine.
    But you cannot store your entire data in hashtable, there is no direct way of increasing performance like that.
    Hope this helps

  • General advice on using SCCM (SMS) to deploy SAPGUI

    I was curious for anyone's opinion on the use of Microsoft's SCCM tool for deploying SAPGUI.  At our organization, I am hoping to take advantage of this capability so that the SAP technical team is not "too" involved in the day-to-day deployment activities.
    Some specific questions:
    1. The only way to do this is to create an SAP installation server so that you can then create the single installation package (and then hand it over to SCCM)?
    2. Assuming I am correct on #1, to patch the GUI, youu2019d have to patch the installation server and create a new installation package and let SCCM advertise it out (i.e. not make use of any of the SAP techniques (e.g. the new automatic workstation updated).
    3. How have you managed the distribution/update of files (saplogon to the u2018newu2019 location, services, etc) on the PCs --- via the package scripting capability of the SAP installer (OSS 1035560)?  I had the idea to request this capability of the SCCM team as well!
    Thanks for any input!

    We have multiple agencies which have thier own method of deploying out to their end users.  Mostly through SMS (or whatever it is called now a days) but that is up to the agencies requirements.
    Here I will elaborate on your questions and divulge a little of our situation.
    1 - Correct.  Create a Installation server and build the package.  From that package it can be put into a SMS package and deployed. (we use this method)
    2 - Yes and also.  Yes, you can update the Installation server and re-create your package with the updated patch included.  I believe you would also need to remove the SAP GUI to re-install the new with the updated information.  My advice would be to  utilize SMS to push just the patch from SAP to your end users which will update the existing machines with the already installed SAP GUI. (We use this method)
    3 - We utilize the variable SAPLOGON_INI_FILE which you can point the machine to an area of your choice to where your saplogon.ini file is located.
    Our use:
    We use both the installation server as well as Wise Studio for our package.  Installation server creates the SAP GUI deployment.  Wise Studio comes in and allows us to set variables and allows us to have a predetermined INI laid on the machine. (We have low speed connections as well as disability users and General users etc.  Depending on switches used during the push install or manually, it will drop a copy of the INI as requested which is built into the Wise "wrapper" we created)  It also allows us to place SSO information and files, registry info, additional INI's which are specific to our landscape.  The Wise installation then calls the SAP GUI installer created from the Installation server.  At the end of the GUI install, it places the predetermined INI file over the one created at the point of install.  (Keep in mind this is just a brief overview)
    I am sure there are other possibilities but these are just from our experiences here.  I would have to let others speak to how they perform such operations.

  • Planning & HFM Certifications - Advice Appreciated

    Hello All – For those on the board that are certified Hyperion professionals (Planning and HFM). I’d really appreciate your input as to the value of these certifications both from the perspective of
    1) Getting onto projects
    2) Being able to perform on the project. Does studying for and completing the certification provide you with the skills to be successful on projects.
    I’ve currently been using Planning since 3.0 but don’t have the certification. My knowledge is functional - not a developer.
    I’m also looking at getting the HFM certification as well but have never used this tool so I’m wondering if it’s worth getting since I’d like to get onto these types of project.
    I do have an accounting background and understand consolidation etc.
    Any advice would be very much appreciated.

    Hi,
    I will agree with that point only in 50%.
    You are talking about 3 different situations:
    1. When You are a technical administrator
    2. When You are a business administrator or a Planning/HFM user
    3. The most important: when You are a consultant
    You can use planning or HFM for 5 years and have no knowledge about the system.
    I see that kind of situation when I go to customers (accontants,managers and so on) and they have no idea how exactly system is working. In example what is the difference between Contribution Total and Parent Total. How to put data correctly. How to set correct POV.
    Study for cert gives You a huge knowlegde and understanding how system is designed.
    I'm not saying that it gives You everything. I'm saying that it really helps You to understand the system.
    If you have such kind of possibility try to prepare Yourself for cert.
    regards
    Karol
    i.e.
    Try to answer for this question:
    Which standard dimension provides an audit trail of the transformations applied to Hyperion System 9 Financial Management data?
    A. Entity dimension
    B. Period dimension
    C. Account dimension
    D. Value dimension

  • HFM Administration Advice

    I would like some advice currently I am an administrator of Hyperion Essbase/Panning but I will be switching jobs soon and I will administrating HFM.  I have used HFM in a previous job but have never administered that or Enterprise.  I was wanting to study up on HFM before I begin my new position.  I have found this book: Oracle Hyperion Financial Management Tips & Tricks : Design, Implementation & Support by Peter John Fugere, and was wondering before I bought it if any had found it useful.  I was hoping with this book and the administrator guide I would be able to get a good basis.   I will also be using there FDM, DRM, and HFR. Or does anyone recommend other materials?
    Thank you so much for the advisement.

    Hi,
    I can recommend that book. I wish I had read it before starting out as an Admin, as it would have saved me some headakes. I pass it on to new hires as "mandetory" reading after they had the admin training with Oracle or a partner.
    Have not seen anything similar for FDM,DRM and HFR - let me know if you do. There is the "Look smarter than you are series" on Esbase/planning.
    Good luck in your new Job.

  • General Advice Needed

    Hello all,
    I have a 15" Macbook Pro (Version 10.6.3) running Snow Leopard purchased in September 2008. I has so many issues and I would like to know what my prognosis is.
    First of all, I have one of the Macbook Pro's with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT that I've read so much about. I believe (or rather, hope) that it is this causing at least some of my issues.
    I won't detail every problem because I don't want to waste your time. I'm am not looking for 'fix' details as I'e tried everything. I seek advice as to what to do next.
    Firstly: Only a few days after purchase, my laptop would continually crash and shut itself down, refusing to restart for 24 hours+. I didn't understand what the problem was so I took it to an Apple Genius who simply told me what programs were running what it crashed. Deleting them all (including BootCamp) my laptop worked again, for over a year when the issue started happening again. My computer would shut down randomly and not restart for a long time.
    Is this due to the NVIDIA issue? My nearest Apple store is a long drive away and having been let down before, I don't want to go all of that way for nothing. If I'm honest, I don't trust them, either. I've heard stories of people being told there's nothing wrong with their computer multiple times before a Genius would finally admit fault. I'm also afraid that the tech will take my laptop, find an 'unrelated issue' and charge for £200+ for a fix that I didn't specifically ask for (Apple have promised free warranty for those with the NVIDIA issue.)
    I've tried my level best to find out exactly what the problem is, but I'm not very technical minded. I hear that the NVIDIA chip causes mis-shaping of the Macbook case? (which mine has, on its right hand side, near the firewire etc ports.) Does it affect iSight, because that, too, has inexplicably stopped working over the last few days, as well as a number of other things.
    Basically, does it sound to you like I'm owed a repair or not? This issue has been troubling me for such a long time and I've had such a hard time trying to get it fixed that I'm sapped of all of my spirit. After nearly two nears of ownership, my laptop DOES have some general wear and tear which is my fault and I don't have a problem with, but considering my issues first started DAYS after I made my purchase and I TRIED to get it fixed then, surely, it must be an inbuilt problem?
    Please help me make sense of my next step. Is NVIDIA my problem? Am I entitled to a free fix?
    Thank you for your time and advice. I await response with eager ears.
    Nick

    Hello. I ran the hardware test that you recommended and came back with the follow error.
    With only a small amount of research, I have discovered that this is a graphics card issue: specifically, the NVIDIA one as highlighted in the original post.
    Now I know for certain I have a faulty NVIDIA card, I'm sure Apple will do the repair for me (although I still hear stories).
    I was just wondering if there are any other symptoms to this issue? Is this why my laptop has overheated and mis-shapen? Is this why my iSight won't work? Please arm me with as much information as you can give, so I know what to expect/ask from them.
    Thank you once again for your time and thank you a brody for your extremely helpful tip - you've made me a content man.

  • Need general advice on package selection regarding java

    Hi,
    I have done a course in programming and covered some of the many areas of java ..... Since finishing that course I have been on and off java . I have used jbuilder9 and also briefly used some other IDEs. Anyway in the past I have done some simplistic graphics programming such as a ball bouncing across the screen. The thing is im planning on writing a small snooker or pool game , Im really determined and I want it to be a structured learning experience ....where Im using objects,interfaces and such. The thing is ....in college the graphical aspects of a program never stretched much beyond using what is provided by the jbuilder IDE. What I want to do is build a pool game but use my own classes and interfaces where appropriate and I was wandering what the best way to do it would be? .....Its a kind of general question so I will try and elaborate....Im willing to get into the ins and outs of understanding the code its just that Im not so sure jbuilder is the correct software to use for this kind of thing, especially with the fact that I want my code to 100% be my own .....e.g NO or very little auto generated stuff. Doing it this way will probably be inefficient but I feel I will grasp javas many complexities by having less "Bells & Whistles" so to speak :-) .....I want to do everything from creating an initial background frame to coding a class ball for the pool balls and somehow dealing with all the angles that a ball can be hit from.
    Is there any sites anyone could recommend that cover the coding of a java game from scratch ......and also uses the functionality of java by immplementing interfaces , classes and explaining there purpose as they go?
    Also a site with an install guide for whatever software is recommended would be great :-)
    I was going to use netbeans 4.0 buy when I click for documentation on an error it says something about "cannot find javadoc documentation. check platform manager to make sure the documentation is added" .......you see I am used to being able to click on an error and get a whole wealth of information about that error or relevant tutorials(such as in jbuilder.....I want good instant error documentation like this).
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.......also bearing in mind that I want to be able to use my own code without having to understand an ide inside out.......although I want to use one all the same .....:-)
    David

    they go?I belive there is a nice tutorial on here, and several if you google, but there is a very good listing in the Java Games Developement forum--this subject comes up there often. There are also listing of 3rd party packages that will help with vaious tasks, such as, graphics.
    Also a site with an install guide for whatever
    software is recommended would be great :-)Install guides are generally supported by the specific tool you wish to use.
    I was going to use netbeans 4.0 buy when I click for

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.......also
    bearing in mind that I want to be able to use my own

    out.......although I want to use one all the sameI use NetBeans and find it does as well as most others I've tried--especially the free ones. There are several to meet your tastes and preferences, i always recomend try a few and see what you like. For a list of IDE's do a search in this forum, the topic comes up several times a year.

  • General Advice and Question on Saving Book Files

    I am still relatively new to FrameMaker. I attended a one on one course 12 months ago for two days. When I attended this course I was totally oblivious to the features of FM, it was totally foreign software. I had looked through the User Guide and as part of the course received Classroom in a Book. I have not spent a lot of time on FM in the last 12 months as I still have to produce manuals in the old format. The changeover is a huge project.
    I have searched this forum many times and found the answers I have needed to many of my questions and learnt so much that I had not fully understood.
    I would just like to confirm now with the users of this forum that I am going about my project in converting to FrameMaker in the right way and I have a question on saving books etc.
    I have Operator and Service manuals for four machines (with variations between each machine and then variations between each of those basic models). Parts of the Operator and Service manuals are interchangeable.
    I want to be able to single source my material and I am setting up an Excel spreadsheet which will breakdown each section of both manuals. Once completed when a machine is ordered the Excel spreadsheet will produce the details of the files needed to complete a book (manual). There will still be work needed on the book files before the manual can be produced.
    My files are double sided with each Chapter starting on the right hand page and I am using variables and conditional text. The manuals contain columns, graphics, tables etc.
    I have done test runs and have managed to accomplish the layout in PDF that I want for the final manuals which will be printed. I am only working on four machines at this stage, once this is set up others will be added or I may have to set up another lot of single source files.
    Am I on the right track?
    My specific question is that currently I use master files for each machine which are updated as needed. These files are then saved to another folder and identified by a Serial Number and Customer. The serialised files are then saved to PDF. I would like to continue this process as in the future the manuals for that specific machine may need to be revised (i.e. Rev. 0 to Rev. 1 and so on).
    So basically I have all my single source files from which I produce a book file and save it to an appropriate folder which identifies its Serial Number and Customer. I don’t know if I have missed something very simple but I want these serialised books to remain as is, I do not want them updated when I make a change to my single source documents. I want to be able to produce my manuals for any number of machines from my single source without changing the book files that have already produced a manual. Is this possible?
    I am using FrameMaker 7.2 b144.
    I hope this posting provides a clear view of what I am trying to achieve.
    Many thanks in advance for any advice and answers that are provided.
    PS This is the first time I have ever posted to any forums.

    It sounds like you want to be able to open the book files and print without updating...
    This isn't the case. Each book will need to be updated before output.
    The reason is that your pagecount (and thus any toc, index, and xref's) will be different in each book and thus will need to be  updated.
    The books will still need a opening and updating prior to output, but you could easily (cheaply) script that process so that you could batch output the books.

  • General advice on creating a messenger with flash

    Hello everyone !
    I would like to ask the experienced on the following matter -
    I have chosen to create a messenger with the use of Flash
    technology for my Master's Thesis, but up to now I only had
    experience in writing standalone games in general (so no networking
    included). I'm also from the AS 2.0 era, but my Tech University has
    recently obtained a licence for Flash CS3 so I'll be moving to AS 3
    soon. Anyway I'm still more or less clueless on where to start.
    My promoter suggested using XMLSockets (would that also mean
    creating some server side application in PHP or Java ?), but since
    I believe these are available from like Flash 5, I'm guessing there
    are newer and better solutions to the problem ? I'm of course not
    asking about any ready solutions, I'll be happy to explore them
    myself, yet a general overview of my options would be more than
    welcome - especially that I will soon have to submit a general
    description of what this whole thing will more or less look like.
    For example - could I use Flash Media Server and Flash CS3
    and that would be enough ? Please share any thoughts on the topic.
    Cheers !
    Andrew

    i'm not sure how you'll set this up.  but each button must correspond to a url and you must supply that information.
    one way to do it would be to use an array that corresponds to your buttons.  so, the first array element is the url used by the first button, the 2nd array element is used by the 2nd button etc.  then:
    var urlA:Array=["www.adobe.com","www.kglad.com",etc];
    var gotoFrame1TO:uint;
    function gotoFrame1(){
        gotoAndPlay(1);
    for(var i:uint=1;i<=btnNum;i++){
        this["btn"+i].addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OUT,outF);
        this["btn"+i].addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER,overF);
        this["btn"+i].addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK,clickF);
        this["btn"+i].ivar = i;
    function outF(e:Event){
        gotoFrame1TO=setTimeout(gotoFrame1,500);
    function overF(e:Event){
        clearTimeout(gotoFrame1TO);
    function clickF(e:Event){
        navigateToURL(new URLRequest("http://"+(e.currentTarget.ivar-1)));

  • Any general advice for a newbie?

    I'm expecting my Mac Pro to arrive Mon., Aug. 13th.
    It's the dual 2.66 Mhz "basic" but I already have: 4 x 1 GB Apple Certified RAM to install, plus 1 x 400 GB SATA Hitachi / IBM Deskstar, plus 24-inch Samsung SynchMaster Flat Screen - all waiting for the Mac Pro.
    So my question is if any of you experienced Mac Pro users have any general "get acquainted" suggestions. I'm upgrading from the eMac described below. So, at least I expect to have adjustments to 10.4.10 and will be upgrading PhotoShop to CS3 and quite a few other licensed apps. Just your general thoughts or "any" caveats you may have - will be appreciated.
    (Even trivial stuff: how well do Mac Pro machines play DVD movies? How much faster does a Mac Pro encode movie files? - will be of interest to me. )

    GRS,
    Thanks for the encouraging report. I'm truly looking forward to just the kind of experiences you describe.
    I do confess: I was "unready" to handle this kind of Mac. I've got over 8 years experience "with Mac" and can find my way around the System and Applications quite well. But it's the things like having to get a monitor "worthy of" the Mac Pro and several other "peripheral" things which is straining my budget and patience.
    One example: On a separate thread <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5116439&#5116439> I have posted about a problem with getting my eMac "Airport ready." This should have been a no-brainer, taking just a few minutes. But installation created a problem - my USB keyboard and mouse "lost contact" and I had to take out the Airport card and start over. Still working on that - and I have to be completely ready including having a desk moved to another room for the Mac Pro before I go to bed tonight.
    Got to get moving - thanks again for the encouraging words.

  • Beginner seeks general advice.

    I am fascinated with iMovie.
    I've printed out the 'instructions' and can understand bits of it.
    The system tells me I have the wrong Graphics Card for certain facilities but I can live with that.
    However:
    I have a cart load of Hi8 Camcorder tapes. I can convert these to DVD on my domestic DVD recorder.
    My computer only recognises the DVDs as blank discs.
    Is there any sort of fix for this?
    The thumbnails provided when I'm playing with titles seem to show a very bitmapped version of the fonts. Does this cure itself in the finished production?
    Thank you for any help. Free Cinema tickets for my first International Premiere!

    then, you still can not simply 'import' DVDs, use one of the following methods and tools:
    DVDs are in a socalled delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and made for any processing as editing...
    for using the iLife vers. ≤6 apps, you have to convert'em first, in recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds:
    DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
    Apple mpeg2 plugin (19$) + Streamclip (free)
    VisualHub (23.32$)
    Drop2DV (free, requires installation of ffmpeg parts, google for it...)
    Cinematize >60$
    Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
    Toast 6/7/8/9 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
    connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter

    none of these methods or tools override copy protection/DRM mechanisms.. advice on 'ripping' is a violation of the ToU of this board ..
    +be nice to copyrights ...+
    By the time my International Premiere takes place, Apple will have invented something to make Air Travel obsolete.
    ... I'll wait, 'til iBeam/vers.1.4 is avail, those x.4. versions are usually the most stable ones ....

  • In need of general advice.

    Hello, as a starving graphic designer I got drafted by a company. I have until early january to make them a huge catalogue(180-200 pages), I know my way around indesign, but I havent done anything as huge, I`ve done 10-+ page catalogues, and this thing kinda scares me, but I really need this job. So, any advice will be hugely appreciated. I will be doing page breakes, as they said, so any advice on that?

    If you post some information about how you're getting the content delivered to you (file format, structure, etc.) we can make some suggestion about how to best flow it into InDesign to make your job less hairy. Also,

    Here's a word you'll want to repeat over and over until it is burned into your dreams: STYLES. Use styles for EVERYTHING. Edit a style and the catalog will update, and trust me, some manager type will want to make some "minor" change like a font or adding a shadow to images, and then change his mind. Saving versions as you go along is a good idea, too. Sometimes much easier to go back to an earlier version than to make changes in what you have now.
    Another useful concept: Backup. Keep a backup copy on a safe external location, preferably not on a network server. Hopefully you won't need it, but we get posts here all the time about "I saved my file on Friday, and now it won't open. What do I do?" More often than not these are files stored on a network and they are a total loss.
    If the readership here was younger and more annoying, I'd just empty-quote Peter's post 10 times in a row.

    That's enough for now.
