Hi,
If the machine is brand new I don't see why the serial Number is missing (it is entered on to a special chip at the factory)
However if the machine is a return and has been refurbished then the Logic/mother board may have been changed and someone forgot to put the info back to the new board.

I have the new MacBook Pro from late 2011. "the one before the new ritina display" i have a cannon gl2 video camera which is mini dv. when i plug it into my mac via firwire 800 it does not show up in the iMovie. i have set the settings on the camera to vcr mode and changed it to av->dv out. when i click on the import from camera on imovie it doesnt even show my camera in it. it just gives me the option to import video from my facetime camera. the camera is turned on the wires are connected i know for fact that its a firewire and not a usb. i know what they each look like. i bought the firewire cable and it was marked down cause it was an opened and used item. would it be possible that it could be deffected and if that is not the reason what other options do i have?
I would say that odds are high that you have a bad cable. Maybe that is why they returned it.
I would suggest trying a different firewire cable.
You can find Firewire cables inexpensively at monoprice.com. You need a 4 pin to 9 pin firewire cable.

Is your camera plugged in to wall power (not to batteries only). Must be hooked to an AC power source to import. -

Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.

Best practices says plug the USB cable into the computer, then plug the 30 pin connector into the iPhone.
If everything is working correctly, you should be able to plug the iPhone in at any time. Before or after opening iTunes.
Depending on what settings are selected in iTunes, the program may or may not automatically open when you connect the device. -
Apple TV does not show up on TV screen
Had my Apple TV for a few months, been used lots. Recently it no longer shows up on my TV, I have an LG TV which just flashes no signal across the screen. On a few occasions I've been able to unplug everything, plug it all back in and it would work perfectly again but it's now to the point where I can't get anything to work. Have also tried reseting Apple TV by holding menu and down, also tried doing the resolution changing by holding menu and up, every so often in the resolution changing, I see the Menu pop up in weird colours for about a second but nothing permanent.
I also have my PS3 connected to my TV, also using HDMI cable, this works perfectly fine.
Anyone have any ideas what might be the issue and how to solve it?I've tried the same HDMI cable with my PS3 and it works fine so I'm pretty certain that's not the problem.
That won't necessarily tell you much, as a minimum you might want to try the PS3 cable with the Apple TV, if you have other cables, try them. -

When using this fix the Tech Note indicates:

Reset your iPad. Press and hold both the power and home buttons for 10-15 seconds till the Apple logo appears. Release both buttons. Wait 15-20 seconds till you iPad starts on it's own. Now try and download an app.

Just bought a new 4th gen iPod Shuffle for my kid. Problem is I cannot do the initial set up, as the device does not show up on iTunes on my PC. Also the charging does not light up. Any ideas on what could be wrong, as I am able to see both my iphone and iPad on iTunes using the same PC?
I also tried manually underlining a few things on the new iPad and when highlighting a paragraph, it would skip a few lines and the line would go through a few as well. Looks like a major iBooks glitch needs to be addressed here.

the external Apple USB SuperDrive plugged in. •As a last resort, if nothing else, before a
return trip to be rid of the SuperDrive, you could try a system management controller reset.
The SMC reset is not a first choice, so I won't post a link to the support instruction page.
A new Apple USB SuperDrive should be seen as hardware in system information report.
Of course, an icon of disc media should appear once the disc is inserted into the drive, too.

Can someone please help me to remove an iphone telephone number from my imessage application. I no longer have a phone which I registered on my apple ID as a second phone. I have been on my apple ID and it does not seem to be there but cannot remove it from imessage, which still has it as an option to connect to. I am concerned that someone else who inherite this old phone will see my messages if I accidentally enable it again. I have read and re-read various postings and tried all options given but no luck, the **** thing stays there.....
