1. Close all inactive apps in the Task Bar. Double-click the Home button and hold apps down for a second or two and tap the minus sign to close app.

I am working on a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2009) with boot camp running Windows 7 pro 64-bit. Windows crashes quite often now-a-days and I need to get this fixed. I heard that updating boot camp can help. Currently I am running Version 3.0.4 (322).
Only Apple could hamstring and tie Mac OS to Windows. There isn't any other than whether you can download the drivers into Windows (you can) but Apple puts a block on the installer setup even if your mac does not support it.
Windows 7 needs at least Boot Camp 3.1 and 3.3 is what you should already have. And you are not getting security updates if you don't have at least 10.6.8 as was pointed out. --- you arent using Software Update as you should. And you should backup and clone Mac (and Windows) as well.
You need Mountain Lion to use Boot Camp 5.x which supports Windows 7 & 8 and 64-bit.
I would upgrade to Lion if you can realizing that Rosetta and PowerPC are no longer supported though.

How do I use the Boot Camp 5 Support Software I downloaded from the web page?
The download file is a .zip file. Double click it to uncompress it.
Double-click the Boot Camp disk image.
Copy the Boot Camp and "$WinPEDriver$" folders to the root level of a USB flash drive or hard drive that is formatted with the FAT file system (see question below for steps on how to format).
Install Windows, leaving the flash or hard drive attached to the USB port of your Mac.
Installation of the drivers can take a few minutes. Don't interrupt the installation process. A completion dialog box will appear when everything is installed. Click Finish when the dialog appears.
When your system restarts your Windows 8 installation is done.

How do I format USB media to the FAT file system?
Use Disk Utility to format a disk to use with a Windows computer. Here's how:
Important: Formatting a disk erases all the files on it. Copy any files you want to save to another disk before formatting the disk.
Open Disk Utility.
Select the disk you want to format for use with Windows computers.
Click Erase, and choose one of the following from the Format pop-up menu:
If the size of the disk is 32 GB or less, choose MS-DOS (FAT).
If the size of the disk is over 32 GB, choose ExFAT.
Type a name for the disk. The maximum length is 11 characters.
Click the Erase button and then click Erase again.

64-bit versions of Windows 8 and Windows 7 are supported using the Boot Camp 5 Support Software. When I left my former employer, Pollinate Agency, I bought a MacBook Pro with Acrobat Pro (version 9 or possibly 9.5) installed from the company. I recently had a serious computer crash, and needed to get all contents erased. The support provider didn't have my product key, so could not reinstall Acrobat Pro for me. Since then, I have gotten the product key sent to me from my former employer, [ REMOVED ] So I need help in re-downloading, installing and activating the Acrobat Pro software on this computer.
Please remove the S/N immediately (I can't or would). Never post them online. As for download you can go to http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/acrobat-downloads.html on the right panel to get 9 pro. I am not sure there is a MAC version there, but that is the first place to go. If it is the proper version, then please back it up to CD and/or portable HD, not the system HD.

I get the following error message when I connect a usb ethernet adapter to my new MacBook Pro: Unsupported - You cannot use an Apple USB Modem with this computer. I live where we only have dial-up and the Apple Store said this is what I need. In addition, when I connect the phone to the connecter it falls out, it will not click in.
Why are you using a usb ethernet adaptor? Just plug the modem into the usb port.

I have recently update to the OS Maverik and I use a projector with a mini display port adaptor to my MacBook Air, ever since the only thing that projects is my desktop picture. I cannot get it to project my school work that I need to teach my students. Help!

When I search a file called start up disc, nothing shows up. How do I delete files so when my computer starts up, I no longer get a message stating that my start up disc is full and that I need to delete some files?
There is a boot drive inside the computer and it's storage space is filled up.
You need to create a external storage drive and transfer some of your files off the internal boot drive.
TimeMachine doesn't work for this as it's just a rotating backup image of what's on your boot drive, it's not a storage drive for more space and to save things permanently.
So what you need to do is get three external drives from the office or computer store.
I suggest 3-4 separate drives at 1TB each (or more capacity if you really got a lot of stuff), USB 2 is currently fine, the newer USB 3's are more expensive but your Mac doesn't have USB 3 ports, so get the less expensive USB 2 drives and save some money. If you can get Firewire 800/USB combination drives, those would be a better choice as Firewire 800 is the fastest for most Mac's. Only the very new ones have Thunderbolt and the new drives for that are rare and expensive.
Make sure they are self powered drives with their own power supply, not port powered as those are a bit flaky as Apple can just determine the device is drawing too much current from the computer and turn it off.
Note: sometimes if your computer is so full, you might actually have to delete some files in order to be able to get it to function transferring files, so pick ones that you can get new copies again, like free iTunes podcasts or movies for instance.
TimeMachine Drive
The first drive you connect to the Mac is going to pop up a window to ask if you want to make this a "TimeMachine Drive" go ahead and allow it to do that, it's backing up everything on your internal boot drive, it's going to take a long time.
Once it's finished, disconnect this TimeMachine drive and label it as a "TimeMachine Drive"
Extra space /Storage drives
The second drive you connect is going to be your "extra storage drive" basically to free up space off the internal boot drive by transferring files to it.
Formatting:
You first need to format this drive, you use Disk Utility in the Applications> Utilities folder.
On the left will be the 'name of the drive' + "media" click that and then click the Partition tab
Now click 1 Partition, Option: GUID, format OS X Extended (Journaled), give it a name like "StorageOne" and click Apply.
Now click the Erase Tab and Security Option> Zero All Data and click Erase (use the same name) this will take a long time, like 2 hours per 1TB. It's going to check the drive for any errors and make sure it's working.
Note: If the drive fails to format, then perform the Zero All Data first, then visit the Partition tab.
Once the second drive is finished, then do the third drive in the same manner, this time naming it "StorageTwo"
Transferring Data off to the Extra Storage drive
Connect only StorageOne drive and visit your User/Movies folder, it's likely the biggest culprit of oversized files. Create a new folder on the StorageOne drive called "ExtraMovies" and transfer the contents of User/Movies to the "ExtraMovies" folder via drag and drop methods.
Confirm the files were transferred and then delete those movies by dragging them to your Trash can and selecting "Empty Trash" from the Finder menu (if you select Secure Empty Trash on large files it takes a really long time to finish as it's scrubbing the drive, likely unnecessary except for sensitive files)
If you have a large amount of User/Files elsewhere, you will have to search yourself and repeat the same steps to free up room on your internal boot drive.
Once you have made some free space, download this free program to help you visualize where all your space is being taken up.

Once you have completed moving files to the StorageOne drive, connect StorageTwo and copy the contents of StorageOne folders to StorageTwo drive. Both drives have to be connected of course.
Rule of thumb
Maintain TWO separate hardware copies of your User data at ALL TIMES
Because you need more room, thus the storage drives are for extra space. The TimeMachine drive is a backup of your internal boot drive and the second storage drive is a backup copy of the first storage drive. So that way your sticking with the rule of thumb, get it?
Don't connect TimeMachine while your transferring files, or formatting drives, you don't want it to "kick in" while your doing all this heavy work or transferring a large amount of files, I think it does so every hour, which you are going to taking quite some time to do all this work.
Once your all done making room and copying files to the Storage drives, disconnect them and label them and date them.
Reconnect TimeMachine drive
Then connect the TimeMachine drive and it will make a NEW backup of your now newer configuration on your boot drive and keep it updated every time you connect it.
Again, TimeMachine is NOT a storage drive for permanent keeping of data, it deletes old stuff as time progresses. So even though you can "go back in time" and recover a file you transferred then deleted off the your internal boot drive, it won't keep everything forever like a storage drive can.
Consider Cloning your boot drive.
TimeMachine drives can only restore, they are not bootable like a clone is, so a TimeMachine drive isn't a heck of a lot of help if your hard drive fails to boot the computer, so a "hold the option key bootable clone" made with third party software is a very useful as you get to use the computer just like it was before and can get online, grab files off the internal drive and so forth. Even erase and reverse cloning!
The trick with a clone is you make one and keep it disconnected, updating it from time to time. If a software update or install hoses your machine, you can option boot off the clone, grab the latest copy of your files and reverse clone the clone with the updated files back onto your OS X partition, reboot the computer and it's like nothing happened.
It's a advanced technique, you will have to learn a lot more perhaps before attempting it, but it's a lifesaver.
Cloning requires another separate external hard drive and free cloning software.

I've recently been given a macbook pro from uni, with lots of adobe software on. I want to pair it with my iMac which has music etc and is it possible to get the software to the imac and the files to the macbook?Giving me the best of both :-)
You would need the original installation disks or files for the Adobe software to get it onto your iMac, and having it on two computers may not be allowed by your university's licensing. Talk to whoever issued the MacBook.
As to the music, just copy it over to the MacBook, either via Home Sharing, file sharing, or an external storage medium (hard drive, USB flash drive, etc.).

Need assistance - wired PC doesn't "see" AEBS; PC notebook and macbooks do
Hi everyone.
I’m hoping someone will be able to help me with the last step in putting together our home network. I’m certainly not a networking expert by any means, but I’ve been able to get the wireless aspects of the network (Internet, wireless printing, wireless external hard drive access) up and running rather easily. I’m not having quite as much luck with the wired aspect of the network, though.
My set-up is as follows:
Verizon FIOS modem/router
AEBS
USB Hub connected to AEBS, with printer and external hard drive attached
1 wired XP PC desktop (connected to a LAN port on the AEBS)
1 wireless XP PC notebook
2 MacBooks
Internet access, wireless printing and wireless external hard drive access are working on all three notebooks through the AEBS -- Awesome! The wired desktop PC is able to access the Internet as well. However, it is not able to access the printer or external hard drive. In fact, when I run the Airport Utility on the wired desktop PC, it does not recognize the AEBS at all.
I would imagine there are one or more network connection settings I need to change on the desktop PC, but I can’t figure out what they are. The fact that the desktop PC is able to access the Internet, but doesn’t otherwise “see” the AEBS has me very confused.
Any assistance that anyone is able to provide would be much appreciated!Got it! I uninstalled the VPN software, and now the desktop PC is able to see the AEBS and access the external hard drive and printer. Thanks for the great suggestion!
My only problem now is that I won't be able to access my employer's network via VPN. It's not a "need to have", but rather a "nice to have" for those few days when I work from home. Do you know if it's typically possible to configure VPN software so that either (a) ports 192, 5009 and 5353 are open, or (b) the VPN software doesn't launch automatically at startup (thereby preventing the PC from seeing the AEBS), but still can be launched when I manually tell it to. The first approach sounds best, but you've indicated that this may be very difficult. I think the second approach would solve my problem as well, since I could launch and use the VPN software when necessary (even though this might mean that the PC loses sight of the AEBS after launch) and then restart the PC when I'm done. Not sure if you're as much of an expert with VPN software as you are with AEBS issues, but I figured I'd ask anyway. If you don't know, I suppose my next stop is my employer's network admin guys.

I'm relatively new to Mac and want to try and get the most out of the new MacBook Air.
My wife and I have been sharing the same Apple ID. We both have iPhones - she has a 5 and I've got a 4S.
We only have one copy of iTunes and we have been sharing the account. (She doesn't really use the computer for anything beyond writing the odd weekend assignment.)
Would I be better off setting her up with her own and making her as a separate user on the computer? Would this require much work?
In recent times with updates, we have a few problems with the duplication of texts and that sort of thing. Both of our texts are stored on the computer and that sort of thing. Also, sometimes texts I send her are sent through to me from her, if that makes any sense.
Anyway, I don't really want to overly complicate matters when it comes to accounts etc, but I wanted to know if a fresh Apple ID would be the best thing or even a new user?
Any tips etc would be greatly appreciated

It doesnt complicate anything, but it adds steps for switching accounts on the Mac/ purchases etc. of course
since your question is mostly personal, ..I wont answer THAT part of it, but creating a new account is easy.....messing with switching back and forth is also a personal preference 'issue' as well. I prefer to keep things simple, but...........you and yours, I dont know.......

Since my work machine was upgraded to a Windows 7.1 pc, I can no longer connect remotely with my Macbook Pro with 10.6.8. I need to know the most efficient and economical way of doing this and if I can skip versions to get where I need to be. Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.

I have an aluminium Macbook Pro 15" from around 2009 currently running 10.5.8. Apparently I need to be on 10.7.2 to get into iCloud. And I can only run 10.7.2 on a Core 2 Duo machine or above? System Profiler says my machine is Core Duo, but also says it has 2 cores - can I run 10.7.2 on this machine? Any feedback welcome.

You can upload the files which you want to share in this online storage and then they have sharing options in which you'll will get the link of the file to be sent and send the email. You're good to go!

I need to de-authorize older macbook and ipods. I read support for Itunes via my account. Directions to "manage devices", but only choice is to deauthorize all computers. How can I get list of all devices? My account says four devices are alread authorized under my ID, but does not list them. Please advise. thanks.
The title of my initial post is a bit misleading. I already took a chance deleting one of the iPhones, hoping if I deleted the wrong one, I can still reauthorize it (all with the same Apple ID acct, so not subject to 90-day waiting period, right?) The iTunes database just updated itself, and it says I have 4 "devices" "in the Cloud", but 5 "computers" associated w my account. How can I find out what computers are associated? Isn't there a list I can see? I dont have a clue what computers they might be. If I use the "Deauthorize All" option, is it a pain to add them all back in. I assume I would have to log in from each computer to reauthorize each one. Would I have to be running the newest OS or version of iTunes to reauthorize? I think I have a PowerBook G4 Titanium with an older OS and iTunes. I'd like to keep that authorized, if possible.
