Hide Other Open Apps Automatically?

I've used Program Switcher/Keyboard Maestro for years to solve my biggest Mac pet peeve: open windows of other open applications still hanging around in the background as you switch from one app to the other.
I've just recently upgraded to Leopard and I can't seem to get my newly downloaded Keyboard Maestro to perform this simple task for me.
I know I can option-command-h to hide other apps, but that gets old quick. Spaces doesn't look like it'll address the automatic hiding issue either?
Maybe it's just my frustration that such an elegant OS, which has served me so well for going on two decades, could still retain such an annoying little glitch. It seems such an easy fix/add.
Or have I been missing some "Always hide other applications" radio button in System Preferences for all these years?
Any help with tweaks to Leopard or other shareware options would be appreciated.
Thanks!

You might replace Keyboard Maestro with ASM 2.2.4 which includes a feature for using Classic-style window switching (all background windows disappear) and it provides other application switching features.
Another application like Maestro but compatible is QuicKeys. A very extensible launcher, keyboard macros, etc. is QuickSilver. Both are Leopard compatible.
You'll find them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

And while im here, does anyone know why my sd card slot wont recognize and why my headphone jack REPEATIDLY turns on the red light after i unplug headphones. I know how to corect it but EVERY TIME. its a major inconvienience to have to switch the switch, q-tip clean it and blow it every time.

This is a long shot but I would suspect there is something wrong with your graphics card / GPU. There was a problem with some Macbook Pro's which used the Nvida GeForce 8600 GT but these were ones built around 2007 / 2008.
It might be worth checking what card you have and to check the serial number just in case as it might be covered - my graphics went in my 2007 MBP when I was outside warranty and Apple fixed it for free.

  • I  can control quicktime player files only from the dock, my mouse does not not close it, and when selected the window fades below the finder or other opened apps.

Does anybody have encountered this problem, and if so, do you have a solution I could benefit from?

  • Command-Option-H not working to hide other apps

Just got a new (refurbished) iMac, with 10.8.3 on it. Transferred everyting from my old iMac without a hitch. There's a weird thing happnening, however. Command-Option-H no longer hides others. It seems to cycle through open apps. But only some of them. So right now I'm in Crome and press the shortcut. It switches to the Finder (with everything else hidden). Then with the Finder up front, I press the keys again, and it goes to Calculator, and hides all the others. I press the keys one more time and nothing happens. But the thing is, I have several other apps open, and it doesn't cycle through those.
The machine is a 3.2 GHz Intel Core i5, with 10.8.3. I am using my old full-sized keyboard, with a wired mighty Mouse (didn't like the tiny Bluetooth keyboard it came with, nor the Magic Mouse).
I've searched and can't find a solution - heck, I can't even find anybody else having this issue.

I think I see some things I don't need to have running, like Adobe Version Cue CS2. Here's the full report – interpret away! Thanks!

  • Since upgrading my Mac OS 10.9 and Mavericks, I am unable to open App Store and other problems.

My computer has gone haywire since upgrading to Mac OS 10.9 and adding Mavericks. Mail was a big problem with my not being able to read messages, but now there has been a mail upgrade to solve that. However, still cannot open App Store from my Dock and cannot open Software Update from the apple menu. Lots of other screwy things going on and Apple seems of no help to try and resolve these issues. Anyone with similiar problems or issues?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Whenever I open a file in Lion, other files of the same sort that I opened previously automatically open up. For example, if I open a .jpg file, numerous other .jpg files that I opened previously in the day open up. How do I prevent this from happening?

Whenever I open a file in Lion, other files of the same sort that I opened previously automatically open up. For example, if I open a .jpg file, numerous other .jpg files that I opened previously in the day open up. How do I close these files to prevent them from showing up again, like in previous versions?

Dealing With The Resume Feature of Lion
Managing Mac OS X Lion's application resume feature.
If you shutdown your computer you should get a dialog asking if you want applications to resume on the next startup. Simply uncheck the box to prevent that from occurring. Open General preferences and uncheck the option to Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps. You can also install a third-party utility to control resume features on individual applications: RestoreMeNot or Application State Cleaner.
It is possible to completely stop the Resume feature although I'm unconvinced that it is that annoying. Nevertheless see the following:
If you have not yet done so you must first make your /Home/Library/ folder visible. Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder. At the prompt paste the following command line:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
Press RETURN. Quit the Terminal application.
In the Finder navigate to the /Home/Library/Saved Application State/ folder. Delete the contents of the folder. Back up to the /Home/Library/ folder. Select the Saved Application State folder. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Sharing and Permissions panel at the bottom click on the lock icon and authenticate. Set each of the listed entries to Read Only. Close the Get Info window.
Quit all open programs except the Finder (this is very important.) Next, navigate to the /Home/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ folder. Look for a .plist file with "com.apple.loginwindow." in the file name followed by some numbers in hexadecimal. Select the file. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window and in the Sharing and Permissions panel click on the lock icon and authenticate. Set each of the listed entries to Read Only. Close the Get Info window. If you also find a file with the same filename but with a last extension of ".lockfile," then you should delete it.
The above should eliminate the Resume feature system-wide. Note that any future system updates or upgrades will likely undo these changes. You will then need to repeat this procedure assuming there are no major changes in OS X related to it.

  • Messages app automatically opens on iMac when I receive a message

    Hi all,
I noticed that my iMac (mid 2011 model running Mountain Lion 8.2) opens the messages app automatically when I get a new message. I found a thread detailing this issue on another site (see below), but the solution (turning alerts off for incoming messages), did not help.
    http://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php/t-1430134.html
    Anyone else experience this?
    Here are more specifics:
    - Messages is configured to use 2 e-mail addresses and a phone number,  but no extraneous accounts like Jabber or Yahoo.
    - This does NOT happen on my MBA with the same OS.
    - I had previously been running the iMessages beta on this iMac before the ML upgrade hit.
Any - ANY - help at all would be much appreciated!
    Thanks!

That would require that the carrier time stamps each message. The time stamps in the phone are stand alone, they run off of when the PHONE receives a message. There is no way to do what you're asking other than keeping the phone on. Sorry!

  • Hello! My App store and some other preinstalled apps wont open. Please help!

I've recently started to use my Macbook Pro, and some apps won't open. I've tried to update the software many times, but it still won't open. I really wan't to buy Lion from App store, but (once again) it won't open.
I've also tried to use the Application Disc that comes with every Mac, put that doesn't work either, and when im trying the Software Update option it says no updates are availible.
When I last used my Macbook Pro, I started to delete some programs that took space on my harddrive, and some of these programs were App Store, iPhoto and iMovie etc. When I use the Application Disc, only iMovie and iPhoto(etc. other programs) are updated.
This shows up when I try to open App Store.
    Thanks in advance for helping
    Cheers, Carl

And when I try to reopen, the same thing happens over and over again...

Slow performance after installing Yosemite on an older Mac is often caused by inadequate memory. Although you can install the upgrade on a Mac with 2 GB of memory, experience has shown that at least 4 GB is needed for full performance.
Select About This Mac from the Apple menu. If you have less than 4 GB of memory, and your model has upgradable memory, install as much as it can take, or at least that much. Any reputable RAM vendor will have a web form in which you can select the Mac model and be directed to compatible parts.
Memory in the MacBook Air is not upgradable. If that's what you have, you should restore the previous system from a backup, or replace the machine. Ask if you need guidance.
The Etrecheck report clearly shows that SylvieRose has a Macbook Pro, not a Macbook Air and that there are only 2 GB  RAM installed.  The Etrecheck report can be very informative if one takes the time to examine it.

  • Hello apple guys, i can't open app store, reminders, contacts, mail(crash), maps, Image Capture, and other apps that comes with Mavericks OS, how i can solve this problem?

hello apple guys, after installing OS X Mavericks, i can't open app store, reminders, contacts, mail(crash), maps, Image Capture, and other apps that comes with Mavericks OS, how i can solve this problem?

So is this the way Apple works now? Not solving customers problems? I'm sure so many users have had this problem. I've had, and I reinstalled Mavericks 3 times. Works fine for some days and then several Apple Apps stop working. Is that a way to force us ti update to Yosemite? (I don't want to) and then pay to update some third party programs (i.e. Pro Tools). Also, there are so many 15" MacBooks Pro with graphic problems and of course the guys at the Apple Service Centers always say: "It's the logic board, you can have it replaced, but it's so expensive I would recommend a new Mac".  I really, really miss Steve Jobs!

After upgrading ipad to iOS 7.1 I can no longer close open apps by double clicking home button.  Any ideas

Double-tap on the Home button. You will see a preview of the app above the actual icon. Slide the preview up to kill it.

  • Photoshop CC crashes on open, but all other CC apps seem to be working fine.

I just installed CC last night, so I haven't had a lot of time to work with the CC apps yet... Bridge has been working fine since the start for LOTS of sorting and tagging images in the last day and a half, and I've opened CameraRAW a handful of times without issue, then this evening I tried to open Photoshop CC for the first time and got a whole lot of strange messages about expired trials and activation problems and other errors and then it crashed... At first I think my internet security software was maybe interfering with Photoshop's attempts to confirm licensing online, but I seem to have gotten that sorted out ... so I no longer get all the weird licensing errors, but right after Photoshop loads I very quickly get the "Photoshop has quit working" error and it crashes. After experiencing this issue I went and tried all my other CC apps and Premiere, Illustrator, InDesign, Bridge all seem fine... just Photoshop is giving me issues.
I already tried "signing out" and signing back in to CC apps as suggested in the forums.
I am using CC on Windows 7 pro. I previously have had Master Collection CS3 and CS5 installed on this computer... but I de-installed these entirely before installing any new apps. I had some errors in de-installing CS3 so I used the Adobe Cleaner Tool to ensure that CS5 and CS3 had been completely de-installed before starting fresh with CC. I don't expect this previous software is causing any issues, but I figured I'd give a complete account of my situation.
Below are the complete details provided in the error message when Photoshop CC crashes.
    PLEASE HELP!

I got it working with the help of Live Chat tech support. There was some sort of error happening with my graphics driver... something that was not a problem with my previous version of Photoshop was now a problem with the new version. I updated the graphic card driver and software via the manufacturer's website and that helped me get through.
After updating the driver... at first it felt like I was going backward a bit... I got an expired trial period error again on opening Photoshop the first time, but then I tried again logging out and logging back in to CC as noted previously ( http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/cc-applications-crash-immediately- launch.html ) ... and this time that helped fix the trial error and this time that was not followed by crashing (thanks to the graphics driver update).
I have an ATI Radeon HD 5670 graphics card. The previous version of the driver I was running did not work with Photoshop CC. I have now updated the driver to version 12.104.0.0 and everything is working now.
Thanks to the Live Chat technician who quickly identified my graphics card as the issue!
