Hide Shutdown or change order of Shutdown option in Server 2012 R2

Is it possible to either hide Shutdown from the Shut down or sign out menu, or to change the order they appear on screen? The order of the options is really poor, Sign out and Shut down one above the other in the middle of the menu is a recipe for disaster,
as I have encountered recently when 2 servers where shut down accidentally.
I know I can use a GPO to remove the Shut down, restart, sleep and hibernate options, but restart is kind of useful, and not everybody knows about Run > Shutdown -r
Anyone know if this can be done and, if so, how?

Hi,
Thanks for posting here.
It might not be able to hide the shutdown on the menu. However, you can use the group policy to remove the shut down, restart, sleep and hibernate options. As you mentioned that the restart is very useful, also you can scheduled a task on the server to reboot
the server automaticlly.

Elaine

  • Can you change toolbar button images in SQL Server 2012?

In SQL Server 2012 management studio I do not see an option to change the button image of the buttons on the toolbar.
In previous versions of SQL, you could go to Tools --> Customize --> Rearrange Commands, select the toolbar, click on a command and then click "Modify Selection". One of the resulting choices was "Change Button Image". You could
choose a different image for the toolbar button you selected. Another choice was "Edit Button Image" which allowed you to create a completely new image for your toolbar button.
I do not see any way to do this in SQL Server 2012. Has this functionality been removed or am I just not finding it?
    Thanks,
    Alan

    Hi Alan,
Based on your description, I make a test in SQL Server 2012, and I also find that there is no option to change button image or edit button image when customizing toolbar. It seems that the functionality has been changed from SQL Server 2012.
Therefore, If you concern about this feature, I recommend you submit the requirement at
https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/ .  If the requirement mentioned by customers for many times, the product team may consider to add this feature. Your feedback is valuable for us to improve
our products and increase the level of service provided.

  • Change Tracking internals behave differently, SQL Server 2012 vs SQL Server 2008

Reposting an issue from Stack Overflow that a coworker and I are dealing with.
In trouble shooting an issue with synchronizing disconnected devices with a central database server using Sync Framework 1.0, we are experiencing a problem after upgrading to SQL Server 2012 on the server. It appears that the CHANGE_TRACKING_MIN_VALID_VERSION
is returning a value 1 higher than it should (or at least than it did prior to the upgrade.)
I have been working thru Arshad
Ali's great walk thru example of how to set up a simple example.
I have run the scripts from #1 thru #5 to insert, delete, and update a row in the Employee table in both a SQL Server 2008 and a 2012 environment.
In 2008, the following statement returns a 0:
    SELECT CHANGE_TRACKING_MIN_VALID_VERSION(OBJECT_ID('Employee'))
    In 2012, it returns a 1.
In working thru a few more scripts (6-8) in the tests, I set the retention period to 1 minute to hopefully force a cleanup action. I left for the day and apparently it ran overnight.
In the 2008 instance, the CHANGE_TRACKING_CURRENT_VERSION and the CHANGE_TRACKING_MIN_VALID_VERSION are equal (11). In the 2012 instance, the CHANGE_TRACKING_MIN_VALID_VERSION is one higher (12) than the CHANGE_TRACKING_CURRENT_VERSION (11). This could have
an impact to the synchronization process when a database is idle for extended periods of time. And we have found that process could get caught in a loop, especially when the following test is performed to determine if a re-initialization, as opposed to synchronization,
    is required:
    IF CHANGE_TRACKING_MIN_VALID_VERSION(object_id(N'dbo.Employee')) > @sync_last_received_anchor

Has anyone else experienced this change in behavior? Does anyone have an explanation?

  • Azure backup options for Server 2012 R2 Essentials

    Hello,
I have configured a new on-prem HP server for a very small (5 users) non-profit client. This is a single server environment, and they use Office 365 for email. I have already configured AD Sync between the two with dirsync. I have installed the Azure agent,
and imported the certificate, and I am ready to create a backup set.
This is my first experience with Cloud based server backup - I'm used to products like Backup Exec and tape media. What are my options for backing up this server? Can I only do file/folder backup, as it appears?
What would be best practice in this situation, as I need to back up the systems state as well? And then, how to restore it?
All I can think of would be to use Windows Server backup to create a backup of the server, then back that up - but it's so messy, I must be missing something.
    Thank you in advance!!

    Hi,
You may refer the following link for clear step-by-step procedure on Azure backup:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/sbs/archive/2014/05/01/configuring-microsoft-azure-online-backup-on-windows-server-2012-r2-essentials.aspx
As of now, you can only backup File & folders(Even entire drive) but you cannot perform System State backups with Azure Backup.
For System State backup, as you mentioned about using WSB and then backing it up to Azure Backup vault may be the only work-around as of now. However, you may vote and provide feedback for this feature in

  • Licensing options for Server 2012 Standard Edition

    I am working a proposal to a new client. Currently they have a single physical server, and 15 workstations, connected to AD;
Server 2012 standard running hyper-V - evaluation (and not attached to the domain)
On it are two virtual machines -
Domain Controller 2008 32bit - license is activated.
    2nd server 2008 R2 64bit - evaluation  (attached to the domain)
If they purchase a 2012 Server Standard license, with 15 user cals, I should be able to activate the two unlicensed servers?
Mark Smed, NPA Network Support Technician [email protected] Northern Computer l Your trusted partner. Ph: 250.762.7753 Ext. 1803 www.northerncomputer.ca

...  If you make the host a domain controller and run Hyper-V you lose your "free" VM instances...
It is my understanding that you lose one of your VM instances, not both. I was led to believe that the purpose of this restriction is to prevent someone from getting a three-for-two deal on licenses, not to lock them out of guest privileges entirely.
but in you instance the host is not licensed and one of the vm's are not licensed so you still need to get a license for the host however you go about it.
This is not quite true as worded. It's true that you have to get a license for the host in general, because Windows Server licenses always apply to a specific piece of hardware, never to a virtual machine. However, it's not necessarily true that you have
to license the management operating system (I think the licensing document calls this the physical OSE, or something like that).
If you have purchased one license of Windows Server Standard 2012 or 2012 R2 non-OEM, then you are licensed to run a maximum of two virtual instances of that same server operating system version/edition or lower on a single host with up to 2 physical CPUs.
You are also allowed to run that same operating system version/edition or lower as the management operating system without purchasing an additional license as long as it runs nothing but Hyper-V Server and services needed manage/maintain its own virtual machines.
If you do anything else in the management OS that provides services to other systems (like ADDS), then one of the guest licensing privileges is lost to cover the management OS. Any OEM licensing may have its own restrictions.
For licensing questions, it is always best to contact an authorized Microsoft reseller and ask to speak to a licensing expert. They go through training specifically for this. The call is usually free. The fines for license violations most
certainly are not. "Read it on a forum" is not good audit defense.

  • Is there a way to change the Windows Update service startup type on Windows Server 2012 R2?

We have a number of newly built 2012 R2 servers that we have HP Operations Manager agent running on that monitors the status of several services and reports if they are "stopped". One of these services is Windows Update. Every day we
get at least one alert saying:
"Service "Windows Update" is not started. Current state is stopped"
Checking the event logs shows that the Windows Update service stops, then a while later it just starts again. Not an error, just an information event.
In Windows 2012 R2 the Windows Update service is set to "Automatic (Trigger Start)", where in previous versions we run (2012/2008R2) it would be set to just "Automatic" or "Automatic (Delayed Start)"
I have come to understand that this behaviour is normal for Windows 2012 R2, and that Trigger Start services by design stop themselves after a period of inactivity. I was unable to find any info on how this works. Our client would like this to
be changed and the Windows Update service stay running all the time, understanding that this impacts performance.
Is there a way to change the Windows Update service in Server 2012 R2 to the old Automatic startup behaviour so that it stays running all the time instead of stopping and starting periodicall? There is no option to do this via the services mmc
    gui.
    So far I have tried:
Removing the Triggers using the command: sc triggerinfo wuauserv delete
This works temporarily, the service then shows as just Automatic in the services console, however if you restart the server or restart the service it goes right back to being Automatic (Trigger Start).
Any kind of help would be appreciated.

    This one might help.

  • Need to remove the Shutdown option in Windows 8 since WOL behavior has changed

For those you who manage systems in an enterprise, you need to read the following article and test it out yourself before you respond.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2776718
This subject of removing just the shutdown option has been floating around for many...many years without any solutions but now with Windows 8 and it's new WOL behavior, we may need to find one since it may be impossible for System Administrators who manage
systems in the enterprise with tools like SMS/SCCM, will be unable to wake up the system if the end user shuts it down. There are all kinds of Group Policies, Tweak UI settings and reg hacks that have been discussed over the years but none of them are currently able
to remove just the shutdown option. Interesting enough, you can change the behavior of the power button to put the system to sleep or hibernate but there doesn't seem to be a way to get the same functionality with the Shutdown option
in the OS. Ideally, I am looking for a way to show only the Hibernate, the Restart and the Logoff option. Currently I can configure the system to show those three along with the Shutdown.

I ran into this too, but I found the solution, at least for my pc:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4d36e972-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0000]
    "PnPCapabilities"=dword:00000108
where the '\0000' could be another value, see in regedit.exe.
The reason this works is, in windows 7, the 2 checkmarks in the "Power Management"-tab of the Ethernet-controller's properties ('allow the computer to turn off this device to save power' and 'allow this device to wake the computer') were independent.
In windows 8 those 2 settings are dependent, meaning if you UNcheck 'allow the computer to turn off this device to save power', you can not check 'allow this device to wake the computer'.
The DWORD_value in the registry has the following values:
0x118 = all checkmarks off (yes really)
0x010 = 'allow the computer to turn off this device to save power'
0x000 = 'allow the computer ...' + 'allow this device to wake the computer'
0x100 = all 3 checkmarks, the former 2 and 'Only allow a magic packet to wake this computer'
While I can not find the true logic in these value, value 0x108, has the required effect.
In the GUI, ( the "Power Management"-tab of the Ethernet-controller's properties) it still looks as if 'allow the computer...' is on, so do not change anything there.
    Good luck!

  • KDE4.x Shutdown Options

    Hi!
I need some help in order to get the shutdown Options on KDE4 working again. I have Arch64 running on my Desktop as well as my Laptop and when I right click on the KDE4 Desktop and choose to "Leave..." I can choose to logout, restart or turn-off my Desktop computer. On my laptop however I only have the option to turn it off.
So I was looking into the system settings and checked the option under the session manager to show the shutdown options. But this did not change anything at all.
Then I kinda looked around for some configuration file to edit but I have no idea which one is the right one. I thought it would be the kdmrc file but I replaced that with the one from the original installation (simply moved the pacnew file over the old one and made sure it's the same as on my Desktop) but nothing changed....
Can anybody help me out with this?
    Thanks in advance!

  • 'Install Updates and Shutdown' option not appearing for Windows 8.1 users

Windows 8.1 users are reporting, and I have verified, that they are not being prompted to install Windows updates while shutting down, even though the updates are downloaded.  Here are the relevant Windows Update gpo's from a sample Group Policy Result
for a typical user on one of our Windows 8.1 workstations:
(Note: The "Specify intranet Microsoft update service location" is the last policy in the updates section, and the value specified there is not relevant to this question.)
These same settings when applied to Windows XP workstations used to prompt users to install updates at shutdown.  That is, the default shutdown option was "Install Updates and Shutdown".  That was a great workflow because all client workstations
were shut down every night and the user didn't have to worry about updates installing while they were using the workstation.  All client workstations are now running Windows 8.1 Pro and the only way updates are getting installed is by manually pulling
up the Windows Update dialog and initiating updates from there.  That is even worse than automatic updates that install during business hours.
    I do notice that
a notification that updates are available appears in the login screen, but one can not take action upon it from there, and most users don't know how to find the update screen once they sign in; and
once updating is begun, then the Install Updates and Shutdown option becomes a default - but by that point its rather cosmetic: that is the only option (to configure the partially installed updates during shutdown) and there is nothing
that could be done to NOT do that at that point.
Is anyone having similar issues?  As far as I can tell right now, there is no ability to actually switch the user's default option to
Install Updates and Shutdown in the same way as in previous Windows editions even though the GPO is identical.

  • Alternative UPS shutdown options for MacbookPro

I have multiple external drives, a 16TB backup RAID enclosure, USB hubs and Thunderbolt eSATA hubs connected to my Macbookpro so I need to ensure that in a power outage I can control the disconnection of all of those devices without losing data.
I have used several UPSs over the years (APC & CyperPower), but recent versions of OSX do not have shutdown options in the Energy Saver system preferences on MacbookPros so if I am not around when the power cuts out, then I run the risk of data loss from hard drives being disconnected when the UPS runs out (currently about 45minutes with all of the above devices attached).
I frequently leave my MBP running while I am out, to process work (rendering previews in Lightroom, uploading high volumes or large files to clients, etc.) so just turning it off whenever I'm not around is not an option.
I would like to set the shutdown preferences to initially save and quit programmes, then shutdown if it can when 50% UPS battery is reached. If any programmes persist (Lightroom won't close without intervention) then when 25% UPS battery power is left, I want the system to do a force shut down, which will at least be tidier on the hard drives than a complete power loss. Better still, would be a utility that unmounted all the connected hard drives.
The thing is, this apparent bug is designed-in behaviour by the Apple engineers. As you can see on Apple developer site: Power Management: UPS specific arguments: " UPS emergency shutdown settings are for desktop and server only." It appears that Apple engineers do not realise that external hard drives are connected to MacbookPros, so need shutdown options out there in the real world.
APC and CyberPower both have utilities that give a bit more control but they do not override the above behaviour.
So, is there anyone who personally knows (no guesses or assumptions please) of a solid fix for this design fault?

The APC software is awful and I never touch it. I can see how the built-in Apple facility is not suitable for you (although it is for many). I can suggest an alternative you could look at.
    NUTS.
    Yes you heard me. NUTS
Actually I am not quoting the famous response of American General Anthony McAuliffe responding to a surrender ultimatum issued by the opposing German army. I am referring to a free open-source suite of software called Network Ups ToolS.
    See http://www.networkupstools.org
This can talk directly to many makes and models of UPS and then can either act as a 'server' to other clients to relay the power status. (As you probably know you can only connect a UPS via USB cable to a single computer.) It can also however control shutting down your Mac when the battery level in the UPS reaches a defined level.
    Using the standard simple scenario
    Power fails
    NUTS detects power fail
NUTS sees battery level drop to critical threshold
    NUTS tells computer to shutdown
This will not turn off all the external drives. Depending on the drives they might do so when they see the computer they are attached to has shutdown, e.g. the Pegasus Promise Thunderbolt RAID can do this. It is possible with a more advanced configuration to buy an intelligent power-distribution-unit and have NUTS tell it to turn off power to specific sockets. In theory you could incorporate this with a forced logout of any users, and a scripted unmounting of drives, but any open and unsaved  documents would be lost no matter how clever you are.
It is also possible to reconfigure many more power settings in a Mac than System Preferences allows. This is done via the command line pmset utility. Type
    man pmset
    for more details.

  • Enabling shutdown options on KDE with no KDM

ive googled and tried my best, but couldnt find a solution for that - is there any way to allow shutdown/restart options from KDE without using KDM(/GDM/XDM/etc)? on xfce, to enable the shutdown options all that was needed was sudo. but for KDE its not enough... any ideas?

    Lone_Wolf:
Actually, i _am_ looking for shutting down the all system - this is what the shutdown option in kde logout dialog allows you to. when using kdm, you can restart (system), shutdown (system), logout (session). without kdm, only logout is allowed, which is not enough, mainly for a live cd user who most likely would like to restart his system (or at least shutdown...).
Since i dislike the idea of having an icon on the desktop todo the shutdown, i might make an icon on the traybar, but i really think that the shutdown/restart should be part of the kde-desktop and not kdm. imho though...
[edit]on a second thought, maybe i'll just use kdm and thats it. i dont have the time nor energy to play with this stuff any longer. [/edit]

  • How to change order data in APO

    Hi,
I am keen to know on ways to change order data in APO say order category BI.....we want to change date by taking input from cif user exit APOCF006.We need this information for the ongoing  project.
I know two options...1) using BAPIs  2) Not very sure about this option ...Function Module:/SAPAPO/OMORDER*CHANGE.
Could you  please help to have better understanding on ways to change orders  in APO?
    Thank you
    Best Regards
    Nilesh Patil

    Hello Rishi,
    Thanks for your reply.
Demand node ofr purchase Ordre( BF) in SNP is Conrel( BI category). We want to change date( start date) at this demand node . We will get this date from R3 using say non cif method.
There are few ways to do it....
    1) If we ignore Menas of Transport( so essentially transit time or lead time in tlane)  in that purchase order  and change this requirement date directly using purchase order save BAPI( requirement node) ......Question will system allow us to do so and even if it allows us to do so will it casue some problem( inconsistencies) later?
    2) Second option I am thinking is...
For one product we maiantain GR processing time in product location master and this is considered while determining strat date of BI (Start date=  Delivery date -GR procesisng time- means of Transport lead time - some other times ....). For this product let's say we have 100 Purchase Orders (BF). We have requirement that each of these POs should get separate treatment while calculating Start date. It means start date can be different for different POs and once we change it forcibly then it shoulkd not change unless we again change it forcibly.
We are thinking to change GR processing time at runtime wheneveer Purchase Order is changed. So if GR time in product location master is 1 day ....for different Purchase Orders different GR processing time can be considered. Say for Po1...its 2 day...for P2 its 4 day.
Or similar way we  can change transit time as given in means of transport in tlanes.
Will appreciate your or anyone's comment
    Thank you
