High Availability - Active Passive setup for EBS Database

Hello Gurus,
We have the below environment:
Oracle Applications - 12.1.3
Oracle Database - 11.2.0.3
OS - Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.7
I would like to know how to achieve high availability (*Active/Passive*) for the database. We don't want to go with RAC at this stage. Can you please guide on a specific note id which explains how to setup an active passive database environment for HA.
Thanks.

  • Configuring Active-Passive cluster for Oracle Database on Red hat

Can I configure the red hat cluster suite to implement an Active-Passive Oracle Service without configuring GFS Volume manager?
In other words, I want to install Oracle Standard Edition for Red hat on 2 node separately. Subsequently I am creating an Oracle Instance on the firsth node whith Oracle datafile, redologfile, controlfile, initfile on a SAN Storage. Subsequently I want to configure red hat cluster suite to start the Oracle Instance on the second node when the the firsth node fail. Only one node at time have the Oracle Instance up. Does this configuration works correctly or I have to install and configure any software to manage shared storage file system(like GFS Volume Manager or OCFS, ASM ecc.)?
    Thanks

This scenario is usually done through custom scripts.
To get an idea of what is required, I recommend you look through Oracle's DataGuard documentation, as Data Guard is a free utility included in the Enterprise Edition to do exactly what you want.
(Having spent a lot less money to buy the less expensive product, you now have the opportunity to spend more in programmer and maintenance costs to create your own solution.)

  • Split setup for EBS R12

    Hi all,
I want to have a split setup for EBS. Say I have 2 servers, and I will use 1 for the DB and the other for Apps.
Though I have not tried it yet, because we only have 1 test server to practise.
My question is....is my understanding correct? That to install a split config of EBS.
    1. I have to run RAPIDWIZ on the 1st machine(server) and install the DB tier. and
    2. Run RAPIDWIZ on the 2nd machine and install the Apps tier.
    Thanks
    Edited by: yxes2009 on Jan 20, 2009 5:07 AM

You can use a special Rapid Install startup option to upgrade an existing database node or Applications node to a new technology stack, without having to perform a complete system upgrade. With this option, you can install new ORACLE_HOMEs and generate configuration files (using AutoConfig) that will switch your existing system to use the upgraded components. In addition to running Rapid Install, there are additional tasks associated with a complete technology stack upgrade.
Note: For the initial release of Oracle Applications Release 12, no technology stack upgrade options are applicable, since the latest core components have been included as part of the release. Options to upgrade will be provided as new components become available and are certified.
    Technology Stack means:
    1) Oracle 10g Database home (10g ORACLE_HOME)
    2) Application Tier homes (10.1.2 and 10.1.3 AS)
Refer to (Chapter 4 - Installing Technology Stack Components) of the Installation manual, it is explained properly there.

  • Choosing a highly-available, networked file system for VM images

What's the consensus here on highly-available, networked file systems for VM disk images?
    HA-NFS seems difficult and overly-complicated.
GlusterFS doesn't seem to be well-suited for this task.
Ceph/RADOS seems popular but there isn't much information available.
OCFS2 seem to be suitable but there also isn't much information available.

Actually, I still would suggest taking a closer look at what I had mentioned in your other thread:
[Use OCFS2 to Share Local Storage (DAS) Across OVM Compute Nodes|https://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=2438632&tstart=0]
I still think that this would also solve thus thread. In the end, there is no how-to on how to build that up and you probably will need some help from some experts. I for myself, also didnÄt configure all of that on my own - i left ASM/Cluster part for some contractor to setup and focused on the iscsi-target/initiator setup along with the multipath setup on m VM servers.
Maybe I will do a little write-up, once we get it all sorted out, since we do experience some strage behaviour of our storages boxes, while ASM hammers ob them quite hardly, but I suspect the raid controllers to blame and not the concept… ;)

    Hi Sagar,
Please use Active-Passive for your SAP PI 7.1 High Availability system.
For more details, please refer to the sdn link:
    High Availability
    ->High Availability FAQ
    ->What is an "active-active cluster"?
An active-active cluster consists of two independent server nodes at a minimum. The workload within a cluster resource is shared between the server nodes. If a cluster node crashes the processes are resumed by the remaining cluster nodes. An active-active cluster configuration means that a cluster resource is active on all cluster nodes. The aim of an active-active cluster is not only to provide high availability system but to distribute the workload between the cluster nodes. Applications with a very high workload like databases benefit from an active-active setup. Due to the SAP Central Services Instance is a light component an active-active setup does not make any sense. Therefore the SCS is implemented as an active-passive cluster resource.

  • Reverse proxy setup for EBS R12.1.1

We have an external DMZ server configured for oracle ebs r12.1.1. The URL is http://testerp.mydomain.com:8003.
Can you please provide a link that shows step by step setup of Reverse proxy for the above URL to access the application.
I already have the metalink notes that says about DMZ setup for oracle ebs. I actually am looking for step by step setup for the reverse proxy using oracle application server 10g. Please help. Thanks.

Roy, I have already gone through that document, it is actually showing how to install and configure webcache 10g for oracle ebs r12.
It also says the features that oracle applicaiton server web cache provides like,
    •Load Balance
    •Reverse Proxy
•Failover and Surge Protection to minimize downtime
    •Personalize Attributes for Caching
BUT IT IS NOT MENTIONING HOW TO CONFIGURE THE 'REVERSE PROXY' FOR THE ORACLE EBS EXTERNAL APPLICATION SERVER ON DMZ.

  • In high availability Active-Active or Active-Passive is VPN supported

My question is as simple as the title!
    Let me know.
    Regards!

it is active/active per virtual context but certain not active/active within a particular context.
I will give you an example.  let say you have 192.168.1.0/24 and 192.168.2.0/24 and for the sake of the argument, you have 100Mbps on both ASA1 and ASA2 and that the network 192.168.1.0/24 and 192.168.2.0/24 is 1Gbps link.
Now let say that 192.168.1.0/24 needs to access 1.1.1.1 and ASA1 is active for .1.0/24 and ASA2 and standby for .1.0/24 and vice versa for .2.0/24.  let assume that there are very little traffics on network 192.168.2.0/24.
based on cisco definition of active/active, you will max out @100Mbps on 192.168.1.0/24 getting to 1.1.1.1 on ASA1 while ASA2 is just sitting idle.  For a true active/active, I should get 200Mbps.
that's why I said "Active/Active" in Cisco is kinda mis-leading... That's why you need to read the fine print

    Hi,
While creating a physical standby database from a primary database what is the initial setup in case of the standby database which will be created.
1.Is it that I will only install the oracle with no starter database and then continue with the steps for creating standby database.
    2. The SID has to be the same for both the database or can it be different.
    Waiting for your answer.

    Hi there,
For one of our adapters we need to communicate with a FTP server which only accepts FTP connections in active mode. It seems that Xi uses by default the FTP passive mode.

    Hi Robert,
Did you get through this problem?
Looks like we are also facing a similar issue and want to find out if it is possible to switch to active mode?

  • OIM 11g high availability - is LDAP required for Weblogic credential store

    Hi all,
Trying to understand whether we need an LDAP in an HA architecture with [OIM/SOA] - [OIM/SOA/Admin]?
    The HA guide: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E14571_01/core.1111/e10106/imha.htm#CDEFECJF
Does not mention this requirement, in fact it specifically says you only need an LDAP if: "only for LDAPSync-enabled Oracle Identity Manager installations and for Oracle Identity Manager installations that integrate with Oracle Access Manager. "
However I have seen mention of issues with viewing tasks in SOA from OIM:
How To : ORABPEL-30504: After Oim 11g Installation, Approval Tasks Cannot Be Read Through OIM Console
Stating then when using OIM, SOA and an isolated Admin server, you need to switch to a proper LDAP as a credential and policy store:
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17904_01/core.1111/e12036/net.htm#CIHIDJCC
"2.4 LDAP as Credential and Policy Store
With Oracle Fusion Middleware, you can use different types of credential and policy stores in a WebLogic domain. Domains can use stores based on XML files or on different types of LDAP providers. When a domain uses an LDAP store, all policy and credential data is kept and maintained in a centralized store. However, when using XML policy stores, the changes made on managed servers are not propagated to the Administration Server unless they use the same domain home.
An Oracle Fusion Middleware SOA Suite Enterprise Deployment Topology uses different domain homes for the Administration Server and the managed server as described in the Section 2.3, "Shared Storage and Recommended Directory Structure." Derived from this, and for integrity and consistency purposes, Oracle requires the use of an LDAP as policy and credential store in context of Oracle Fusion Middleware SOA Suite Enterprise Deployment Topology. To configure the Oracle Fusion Middleware SOA Suite Enterprise Deployment Topology with an LDAP as Credential and Policy store, follow the steps in Section 11.1, "Credential and Policy Store Configuration."
So which is it does anyone know?
    Thanks,
    Wayne.

Note that you can use the internal LDAP that comes with WebLogic, for your users and groups if you want.
When you have multiple domains, you have a problem with this set-up as the internal LDAP is coupled to
a specific domain. This means that users you created in one domain are not visible in the other. When using
a separate LDAP that contains the users. You can configure in each domain an authenticator that points
to the LDAP. In this way you can share to user accross multiple domains.
When you are planning to use one domain you can stick with the internal LDAP if you want.
An example set-up (that uses access manager not identity manager) can be found here: http://middlewaremagic.com/weblogic/?p=7819,
which might help you in how to proceed.

  • SOA Suite -  Active/Passive HA

    Dear All,
Need your guidance in configuring Oracle SOA suite with ESB to make it highly available (Active / Passive) . Have gone through one document but its only showing Active/Active configuration.
Is there any step by step doc for this.
    Regards,

Thanks for update Taylor.I'm following from below URL:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B31017_01/core.1013/b28941/toc.htm
We need to install SOA suite with ESB,but the mentioned document doesnt give any scenerio for Active/Passive configuration for SOA.
I want to know how we'll distribute the software components on each node/shared storage for an Active/Passive topology, so in case of node failure , other node can take over.Currently we've installed following on a single node.
    1- OC4J and J2EE in one home
2- SOA and ESB in second home
Any help will be highly appreciated.

  • Active/Passive RAC setup in 11.2 Standard Edition?

For the ACTIVE/PASSIVE setup in 10g RAC, the ACTIVE_INSTANCE_COUNT parameter works very well. However, in 11.2 version this parameter is obsolete. I'm testing this on our Test RAC server with Oracle Standard Edition 11.2.0.1. What are the other ways possible for an ACTIVE/PASSIVE cluster in Oracle 11.2? Has anybody gone through this before? I know that Oracle Enterprise Edition supports RAC One Node, but I've Standard Edition & moreover, I'm planning to have 2 databases on this cluster with 1 database being Active/Passive & the other being Passive/Active on the 2 nodes.
    Appreciate any quick help!! Thanks.
    Satish...

    Hi user1701261,
One option to divert traffic to specific node could be setting 11g Services in active , passive mode.
    srvctl add service -d DB01 -s DB01_SRV -r "db011" -a "db012, db013"
    Where
-d <db_unique_name> Unique name for the database
    -s <service> Service name
-r "<preferred_list>" Comma separated list of preferred instances
-a "<available_list>" Comma separated list of available instances
Session will switch to incase db011 instance goes down.
active_instance_count parameter is effective only for Two node cluster, whereas using this method you could get more flexibility.
    Regards
