High sound latency [SOLVED]

Hello all,
I've recently started trying out Arch Linux with KDEmod, and I find that I like the simplicity of the system. I do have a few glitches that need to be worked out, but I'm making good progress. One annoying problem that I do have is that playing sounds seem to have a high latency.
It seems that whenever a notification dialog that plays a sound appears, I see the dialog and then anywhere from one to three seconds later I hear the associated notification sound. In the time between when the dialog appears and when the sound plays the machine does nothing - I cannot even move the mouse. Other than this problem, the sound plays fine.
In the KDE Control Center, I've gone to Sound & Multimedia->Sound System and tried with skip prevention both enabled and disabled, but I still have the same problem. Does anyone have any ideas on how I make the sound system a little bit more responsive?
I have a Dell Inspiron 9300 running the stock kernel 2.6.21-ARCH. For the sound card, the lspci utility reports:
00:1e.2 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03)
for the sound card. For a while I used openSUSE on this same machine and it did not have the same sound latency problem, so I have to think there is some configuration that I am missing.
I thank you for any suggestions that you might have.
Regards,
jbro

Could you please elaborate? I am not using esd or the arts daemons, so I should be using ALSA directly, as far as I can tell. I have tried turning off the KDE sound system in the Control Panel thinking I could avoid any servers that KDE uses, but then I get no sound, of course. If KDE automatically uses arts, then I'm not too sure about how to turn it off and go directly to ALSA. Any pointers to documentation would be great.
Thanks.
Arts is _very_ bad, dont use it (just my opinion)
Fortunately, you can specify another program instead of arts to play your sounds.
At first, open kcontrol and disable the sound system. Then open the system notifications entry and click on player settings at the lower right. In the upcoming window, set to use an external player and put the "play" command into the line (you can also use other players like ogg123, but play has the benefit that it plays nearly everything. Its in the sox package).
This will play sounds without those funky lags that happen with arts, except your hdd is working hard...

  • Sound latency in Director 11.5

    My project utilizes brief (< 1 second) sound files in close succession. Sound latency (delay between files) must be very low, and all versions of Director from 6 through MX 2004 have provided excellent performance. Now that I've "upgraded" to 11.5 I find that latency has increased to unacceptable levels. Does anybody know what has changed and what--if any--solutions exist?
    Thanks,
    Bruce
    Mac PowerBook 2.26 GHz Core 2 Duo
    4 GB Ram
    Director 11.5
    OS 10.7.1 (Lion)
    quickTimeVersion(): 7.7062
    the soundDevice: "CoreAudio"

    Talking about Director Shockwave and sound latency, the order is the following:
    MacroMix > QT3Mix > DirectSound
    So if you set _sound.soundDevice = "DirectSound", you'll get the best latency (1-2ms).
    Of course, you'll need a decent sound card (Creative Audigy for example).
    The main problem is that DirectSound is available on Windows only.

  • XFI Titanium high dpc latency after installing creative console launcher

    HXFI Titanium high dpc latency after installing creative console launcher=im using windows 7 64 bit sp(rtm) this also happens with normal windows 7 64 bit(without sp).
    when only installing the driver for the XFI titanium my dpc latency is between 0-50 with spikes that go to 90.
    this also happens when I don't have any drivers installed.(windows high definition default driver)
    however when I install the creative console launcher my dpc latency is allways above 00 and most of the time between 00-200 with spikes to +-400.
    im using PAX PCIe Titanium ALL OS Driver V3.25, and creative console launcher 2.6.49 beta.
    my question is can I use game mode without installing the console launcher?
    is there a version of the console launcher that doesn't cause higher dpc latency?

    Maybe a bad driver mod. Try Creative own drivers/CD first and see what happens.

  • High sound attack when pausing or jumping forw

    After i reinstalled my Audigy 2 ZS i have noticed an interesting perm disturbance for the first time
    When i either jump a movie forward (klick directley on the timeline) or paus it in any media player
    the volume turns dramaticly up when the sound returns, so you have to throw the headphones out the window to not get moore or less deaf, its just like the known TV-syndrome when "Thirtysomething" pauses for Lego-comersial, the volume goes up high and all pensioner starts complain
    I have not tested without headphones, i dont need cause i have not changed any volume settings on them, its in the computer, obviosly some creative settings i have changed and not thinked about, or the fact that i have mixed web-driver with old creative cd-components and that give a unbalanced sound? or some sound codecs that conflicts?
    I took this screenshot to show how low my volume settings are while still it generate this high volume
    http://imagesocket.com/view/Hej_Acti'veWindow50.jpg
    the volume and wave bars is accually not going up graphical along with the high sound, it doesnt change
    as long as i dont jump in the playtime or pause the volume is constant what thei shall be.
    Is this a known sympthom? and is it solveable

    One thing you can look at is if in iTunes, you right click on the audiobook track, choose get info, and go to the options tab, remember playback position should be checked.

  • [SOLVED]DosBox Sound latency

    Hi,
    I'm having a problem when using dosbox. When I play any game, sounds have some latency of roughly 0,5s, which mean audio/video aren't in sync.
    I'm using alsa, have a soundblaster live (the excellent old ones!) and don't have any other sound issues with my setup.
    I seem to remember there being a way of tuning alsa's output, but I can't remember how to do that, any ideas?
    Last edited by hungerfish (2009-10-12 12:13:23)

    I 'fixed' the issue I was having with Alsa, by changing the the following values in dosbox.conf
    blocksize=512
    prebuffer=50
    I guess this will be trial and error with any game until I find the best setting. It's not perfect , but is definitely playable.
    Maybe you can play around with thouse values whilst using OSS4, maybe it helps. I got sound working using OSS4, but it was very very choppy

  • Media applications fail to output sound. [SOLVED]

    The issue here seems to be that for some reason or another applications such as VLC, Nightingale, clementine and amarok fail to output sound while system sounds, flash media, and notification sounds from applications such as Skype and Thunderbird continue to work. With each of the music players respectfully there seems to be an error output that amounts to not being able to connect to the sound device. As nightingale is what I currently have installed, the error output is such when I attempt to play any sort of media.
    Configured audiosink audiosink-bin is not working.
    I am using E17 after formerly having used KDE however I had similar problems with the initial install that were fixed after setting the default device in alsamixer.

    Every thing seems to be loaded correctly and speakertest -c 2 seems to be working. The problem I had last time was with flash blocking sound output from other programs, but this problem subsided after having correctly set my default with alsamixer. I began to have the problem of flash blocking other applications from outputting sound when a browser was open a couple of days ago, but this has somehow progressed to any media application failing to output sound at anytime regardless if a browser has been opened or not. I uninstalled flashplugin and now rely on the plugin packaged within chrome but the problem persists. Any suggestions? I have read the wiki on alsa and on the flash plugin and have searched around but have found nothing that addresses my problem or that I have not already implemented or tried.
    EDIT: It seems that I have gotten vlc to start working again. The issue here seems to be that /etc/alsa.conf had been marked by pacman as /etc/alsa.conf.pacorig and renaming it and setting vlc to output directly to the default device instead of having set to default has gotten sound working for it again. It seems the only problem that remains and I have gotten this error is other applications and it is probably the problem behind XBMC not playing audio but the audiosink-bin is not working error is most likely the source of the additional problems. I will look into it and see if I get any reply in the meantime.
    EDIT: Due to something beyond my intelligence it seems that nightingale now plays sound and can even do so with chrome and a youtube video open. I am guessing the problem lied in the gstreamer plugins and when I removed all of my orphaned dependencies that may have been what had done it, something may have been in conflict or maybe just from the couple of reboots I have had since then. I did reinstall the plugins but there was a package that was removed called smpeg and another called sdlmixer those may have had something to do with it. So the moral of this story is to remove orphans on a regular basis, which I have been doing but just got around to today. If anyone has any input, which I doubt at this point. I will mark this as solved

    I fixed it (for now, at least!)
    I ran the below command:
    $ cat /proc/asound/cards
    0 [U0x46d0x804 ]: USB-Audio - USB Device 0x46d:0x804
    USB Device 0x46d:0x804 at usb-0000:00:1a.0-1.2, high speed
    1 [MID ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel MID
    HDA Intel MID at 0xf9ff8000 irq 47
    2 [NVidia ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
    HDA NVidia at 0xfbd7c000 irq 17
    Basically, my USB webcam, which also acts as a microphone, was being treated as my default sound card. I changed this by creating a file in /etc/modprobe.d with the following:
    options snd-hda-intel index=0
    Which set my real sound card as default:
    $ cat /proc/asound/cards
    0 [MID ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel MID
    HDA Intel MID at 0xf9ff8000 irq 47
    1 [NVidia ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
    HDA NVidia at 0xfbd7c000 irq 17
    2 [U0x46d0x804 ]: USB-Audio - USB Device 0x46d:0x804
    USB Device 0x46d:0x804 at usb-0000:00:1a.0-1.2, high speed
    The problem isn't ENTIRELY fixed. Skype's still being a bit buggy, but at least Chromium is now playing sound, including in Flash media. Strangely enough, after playing a Flash video (e.g. on YouTube), Skype's sound seems to fix itself if it's defunct.

  • AS3 sound latency solution ?

    Hi all,
    I have a large MP3 file (about 2 minutes), which I load dynamically. I can play the sound just fine, except that:
    I need to play pieces of the sound, ie from 2 to 5 sec and later on from 6 to 10 seconds etc. Using the sound.play(2 * 1000) and sound.play(6 * 1000) I get really high latencies, causing the first second or so not to be played.
    I came up with a class that feeds samples to the sampledata event. Browsing the internet told me that a buffersize of 2048 will reduce latency to 30ms on average, which is fine.
    package
    import flash.events.SampleDataEvent;
    import flash.media.Sound;
    import flash.media.SoundChannel;
    import flash.utils.ByteArray;
    public class PlaySound
         private var _sound:Sound = new Sound();
         private var _originalSound:Sound = new Sound();
         private var _samples:ByteArray;
         private var _startTime:Number;
         private var _endTime:Number;
         private var _position:Number;
         private var _bufferSize:int = 2048;
         private var _soundChannel:SoundChannel;
         public function PlaySound(sound:Sound):void {
              _originalSound = sound;
         public function play(startTime:Number, endTime:Number):void {
              _startTime = startTime * 1000;
              _position = _startTime;
              _endTime = endTime * 1000;
              _sound.addEventListener(SampleDataEvent.SAMPLE_DATA,onSampleDataEvent);
              _soundChannel = _sound.play(_startTime);
         public function stop():void {
              if(_soundChannel != null) {
                   _sound.removeEventListener(SampleDataEvent.SAMPLE_DATA,onSampleDataEvent);
                   _soundChannel.stop();
                   _soundChannel = null;
         public function onSampleDataEvent(event:SampleDataEvent):void {
              var bytes:ByteArray = new ByteArray();
              var len:int = _originalSound.extract(bytes, _bufferSize, event.position);
              event.data.writeBytes(bytes);
              _position += len;
    So I pass in the original (big) mp3 sound in the constructor, and then use that sound to feed the _sound that plays.
    1) Does it matter what the original sound MP3 specs are, or must they be 44KHz/128Kbps ? When I use the sound.extract method, does flash convert another spec to 44KHz/128Kbps or *must* I also pass in an mp3 with the same specs?
    I'd love to being able to load an original mp3 with lesser specs and thus consuming less bandwith.
    2) I'm having trouble converting the start/endtime to the right position on the right position in the bytearray stream. Does anybody have a solution ? How is it calculated? (Even if the original sound is not 44KHz/128kbps) ?
    If anybody has another solution for playing pieces out of a larger mp3 file without latency, please do tell me so
    Thanks!
    Ronaldo

    1) According to the docs, Flash will resample files to these specs if they aren't there already. I experienced weirdness with bit depths that weren't powers of two, but that might have been something in my code.
    2) Basically you just multiply by the sample rate to get the position offset. This is always 44100, since the extraction converts the sample rate. So if your MP3 is 60 seconds long and you want to extract from the midpoint, the offset would be 30 * 44100.
    There will always be some latency, but you can calculate it and make adjustments to the offset as needed.

  • Skype No sound! [SOLVED

    Hi Arch forum.
    I've got a IBM R51 with 0.7.1 Noddle on it. I've found out that in AUR there was a package that contained Skype. That I have a lot of friends around the world, I installed that package.. Without any problems.
    But whan I tried it - I have a problem.. There's no sound while using skype..
    Normally I have Alsa installed and my sound is working great. Is there any way to solved that problem..
    I've also tried to put my headset on the machine - but with the same result..
    Have anybody any ideas about solving this problem????

    I've been having the following problem for a while:
    Whenever I try to watch a youtube-clip in flash format, and I try and skip forward, the image freezes, but the sound continues. This happens both in Chromium and Firefox. Is there someone who knows what's going on, and if there is some way to fix this?
    I currently have flashplugin-11.0.1.152-1 64-bit installed, and the nvidia-285.05.09-1 64-bit drivers for my video card.
    Thanks a lot!
    Linus

    Oh, well, I feel kinda silly now... I just remembered I had turned hardware acceleration on (by uncommenting the line in /etc/adobe/mms.config) and tried turning that off again, which seems to have solved the problem... Hope this might help someone else!

  • Ubisoft Games with nForce1/nForce2 Sound Problems, Solved...

    You play a Ubisoft game like Prince od Persia: Sands of Time or Far Cry (this one is a Must ) and suddenly you loose gun fire and half of the sounds of the game?.... this is a problem with all ubisoft games and the nForce based boards which is up the scene a long long time now   Many people believed that this was a problem of the board's Southbridge overheating...but it is NOT!!!... It appeared strangely only in Ubisoft Games when nForce1/2 hardware Sound Acceleration was used....
    ALL THIS IS OVER NOW ...
    DOWNLOAD THE NEW v4.31 FORCEWARE AUDIO DRIVER AND PROBLEM IS SOLVED!!...
    Patience Pays off,
    nforce Soundstorm is the best integrated sound solution there is todays and one of the best in general, featuring unique capabilities like Dolby Digital On The Fly Media Encoder (dolby digital 5.1 channel transition from any stereo 2-channel media source) and unique quality (considered best choice when listening 3D Audio with headphones) and over the years it has become today an almost bugfree and stable product supported now by almost all game developers.
    The feature for Soundstorm nForce Audio appears very bright. It competes equally with big names in PC Audio like Creative and is a much cheaper sound solution
    Long Live Soundstorm!!\

  • 10.6.7 - High wifi latency on Mac Mini (from mid 2007)

    Hi!
    I have a MacBook Pro from mid 2009. It is upgraded to 10.6.7 and works with absolutely no problems. However I also have a Mac Mini from mid 2007 and since upgrading to 10.6.7 the wifi latency has been extremely high--averaging 5 seconds or more if I run a ping command on the IP address of my network gateway.
    Last night I restored the system to its original OS X version (10.5) and the wifi worked great. Then I upgraded with my original Snow Leopard disc (10.6) and the wifi still worked great. Finally, I updated via the Software Updater to 10.6.7. The wifi instantly took on the high latency again. If I switch to my Windows installation via Bootcamp, the wifi works splendidly. The problem is definitely with 10.6.7. It is not with my Mac Mini hardware or with my router.
    Some things I tried to resolve the problem (none of them worked):
    I tried creating a new "Location" and reconnecting with that.
    I tried zapping my PRAM
    No need to delete my preferences files because I just did a complete OS restore
    I have not changed my routers security settings because that is not an acceptable solution (some people suggest disabled WEP or WPA--I'm running WPA2).
    Any help that you could provide would be great. I've never had a problem with Apple hardware or software before this, so this experience is disappointing.

    Thanks for your response.
    My router is a Linksys WRT160N.
    I'm a little doubtful that it's just a matter of 10.6.7 and my router, since my MBP is currently running 10.6.7 and doing just fine. I'm fairly certain that the fault is primarily with 10.6.7 itself.
    Here's the Airport information for my Mac Mini

  • Sound Latency

    I'm running audio equipment into my imac via 1/8in input, and sound out the same way through the available slots in the back.
    there is latency in the output when i run through garageband or through the program "line in"
    All help is appreciated.

    Hi screenNameAAA,
    I had the same problem, the solution was:
    disable NetBIOS!
    My delay was around 8 sec. It was also under W2K/XP if NetBIOS
    was enabled.
    May be this comes a bit late ;)

  • Airport/Surround Sound Latency Issue

    I just set up a new surround sound system and am streaming iTunes through both my computer speakers and adjacent surround sound (Bose hooked up to a Yamaha BRX-610). Airport Express is connected to the receiver via standard audio cable hookup. Previous stereo had no delay, but I now have maybe a .5-1 second delay between the computer and the new surround sound.
    Anyone have any thoughts, ideas or fixes?
    Thanks

    Right now its using the analog. There is an input for optical but I have it connected to something else. Would this be causing the issue?
    Possibly. The digital audio stream arriving at the Express would need to be converted to analog signal via a DAC internal to the Express prior to it being output on the base station's audio port. That conversion may be the cause of the delay.
    The other cause would be the potential of Wi-Fi interference where it would introduce a significant enough level of noise to reduce the overall bandwidth ... and, in turn, potentially causing this issue as well.
