Highavailbility in 11.1.2.1

Hello Everyone,
Thanks again for this forum helps me a lot ..
We are planning to upgrade to 11.1.2.1 from 11.1.2.0.
We wanted to implement high availability and load balancing to our applications. This is our requirement. But, I am very to 11.x version.
Could you please let me know what we need to follow to acheive this ? Do we need to take care of it during installation ? or Can we do later part of installation ?
You are help highly appreciated !!
Thanks you,

To implement high availability on the web applications, you need a load balancer and this is not too difficult in 11.1.2.1. You basically need to install your web applications on two different servers. Make sure you apply patch 12552933 which fixes a defect when having multiple R&A Framework servers. Make sure that you use a network share for the R&A physical repository. Configure and deploy all applications on the first node. Once all applications are deployed, start the WebLogic Admin Server so you can deploy all of your web apps from the second node to the WebLogic admin server you created initially. Make sure that you use the same databases you used on the first node and deploy the web applications.
Your load-balancer resource will need to create a Virtual IP (VIP) for you which load-balances node A and B. In the web server configuration, you will need to change the logical web address to the Load Balancer VIP for all the web apps EXCEPT the EPMA dimension server which can only be highly available when using clusterware.
To setup an Essbase cluster for failover, I suggest you read this blog article. Although this is for Linux, it shouldn't be too different for Windows. http://blogs.oracle.com/pa/entry/setup_of_essbase_clustering_on

There are a few options for load balancing.
DNS Round Robin is one of the way to go without any load balancing solution.

The article above talks about each option and their advantages and disadvantages.
To enable round robin for Windows Server
Click Start, click All Programs, click Administrative Tools, and then click DNS.
Expand DNS, right-click the DNS server you want to configure, and then click Properties.
Click the Advanced tab, select Enable round robin and Enable netmask ordering, and then click OK.

The link below is the way Microsoft has configured Load balancing and entire exchange architecture.

Please be aware that, all the above needs careful planning before implementing. There are advantages as well as downsides to each of them.
