Home directory is read only

Hi -
I'm having a strange problem with my home directory on my MacBook Pro that is running Leopard.
The finder window for my home directory claims it is read only (the pencil with a line through it shows up). However, if I do a Get Info on it, it says I have read/write permissions. All the directories inside my home directory are fine. If I go into terminal and change the permissions, I still can't write to it:

From the snippet above, clearly I have r/w access, yet I can't create a directory!
Any ideas what could be wrong?

Actually you do not have read/write access. Your Home folder is owned by the system user and the group is wheel. The correct values for a Home folder are:
Owner=you with r/w privileges
Group=staff with r/w or read-only privileges
Everyone=read-only privileges
Try this:
you can reset the ACLs on your home folder by the following series of terminal commands. It's up to you if you want to do that. I personally like them but I hate the way the ACLs are implemented in leopard so that many ACLs are invisible from GUI and yet can be propagated by using "apply to enclosed items" button. That's a major No-No in my book.
Here are the commands (in bold). just copy and paste the commands (they are in bold).
*chmod -R -N ~*
this removes all ACLs from files in the home directory.
The following two commands put the necessary ACLs back where they belong.
*chmod +a "everyone deny delete" ~/ ~/Desktop ~/Documents ~/Downloads ~/Library ~/Movies ~/Music ~/Pictures ~/Public ~/Sites*
*chmod +a "`id -un` allow list,addfile,search,delete,add_subdirectory,delete_child,readattr,writeattr,readextattr, writeextattr,readsecurity,writesecurity,chown,file_inherit,directoryinherit" ~/Public/Drop\ Box*

  • Connecting to SMB / PDC home share is read-only

    I have an absolute mystery (to me at least). I have a Linux SMB server with home shares enabled. I connect to the home shares no problem from Windows. On my Mac (OS 10.6.3), one user is able to connect to their home share, but I cannot with my account. Investigating further using terminal, I noticed that the SMB mount (in /Volumes/%Username) is mounting with mode 555 (r xr xr x) instead of mode 755. I verified that there are no ACL's on these directories. The user that is working has their home directory with 755 as I would expect. Note - Mac OS GUI is doing the mounting automatically using the standard "connect to server" from Finder and just using smb://servername/username. It is bizarre, as I there is no difference that I can find between the two users on the SMB share and it works fine from Windows. I tried chmod'ing the smb mount to 755, but it just reverts to 555 on remount. I've done an "smbstatus" from the SMB server and it shows that my username is connected and shows no difference between the windows and mac, so all the permissions on the SMB server seem to be correct (I am connected to the home share with the correct username and not as "guest"). I'm at the limit of my expertise with this one.

  • Home directory permissions help

    Two questions:
    1) the default permissions for my account appears to be set to give me Read & Write permissions, and all others get Read Only? I'd like the default to be that all others get None as a default - do I use the umask command to do this, and if so, with what settings?
    2) One folder in my home directory is set such that the Guest account has Read Only. But I cannot seem to alter this - from my home directory, there are only two permissions entries - I have Read & Write, and Everyone gets None - the Guest entry does not even show, and there is no user 'Guest' I can select. But if I am logged in under the Guest account, and select permissions on that directory, I see three entries, including Guest having Read Only. How do I resolve this?

    Most of the default (system created) folders in your user account are only readable by you. The exceptions are the Public (for file sharing) and Sites (for website sharing), which are readable by everyone. Folders that you have created will also be readable by others (this is the system default setting), so if you have placed them in the root directory of your user (outside of the default folders), others will be able to read them unless you change the permissions.
    If you have altered the permissions on the default user folders, for example, by using "apply to enclosed items", you will need to do some repairs to restore the original permissions (the Disk Utility permissions repair will not repair anything in a user account). Apply to enclosed items... should never be used on a system created folder.
    The Guest account only exists when you log into it - normal permissions include the owner, group, and everyone else.

  • [SOLVED] read only filesystem prevents login

    Hi everyone.
    I have this problem after changing from initscript to systemd and adding an external ntfs-3g drive to /etc/fstab. when i log in i get this message and xfce4 doesnt start :
    -bash: /home/bb/.xlog : read-only file system
    ls -la /
         gives output  rwxr-xr-x   for /home
    i also tried
    #mount -o remount,rw /dev/sda4 /
        with no results.
    when i try to change /etc/fstab entries i get an error message saying that system is read-only...
    chmod and chown dont work either with the same error message
    how am i supposed to change something in a read-only system?

    i ve not removed 'ro' from booting cmd and / is mounted with rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 1   in /etc/fstab  as options

  • Mkdirs() creates read-only directories

    In my application I have a piece of code that creates directories with mkdirs(). So far, so good.
    But after that, I want to copy a file to one of the (sub)directories. However, the directories are all read-only, so I get a runtime error:
    java.io.FileNotFoundException: (Permission denied)
    Because the directory is read-only, I cannot copy files to it, right? If so, how can I solve this? I understood there's a command called setReadOnly for File objects, but setting it to false didnt work.

    What are you doing to get this exception? Some code might help.

  • FStab messed up, root is read only

    When upgrading my laptop I lost my fstab completely. So I let it sit, and it boot, however, I can't repair my fstab file because my entire root directory is read only. Is there a way to set the root directory to be writable in the command line? Thanks for any help,

    Command spit back it couldn't find / in fstab or mtab... I tried 'mount -t reiserfs remount,rw /' and got 'special device remount does not exist'. I'll keep playing and see what happens, if you have other ideas please post, thanks.

  • Reading from home directory in linux using ~/ or $HOME and BufferedReader

    I'm working on an app that reads in a number from a user's home directory using BufferedReader. The file is written by an external script to ~/filename. I don't know if the user of the app's home directory will be /homes/username, /home/username, or something else. I would prefer to read in a similar fashion:
    BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader( new FileReader("~" + File.separator + ".AppDisableUntilDate") );
    Unfortunately, this causes the following error:
    java.io.FileNotFoundException: ~/.AppDisableUntilDate (No such file or directory)
    less ~/.AppDisableUntilDate does read the file. Using $HOME in place of ~/ also fails. Any ideas what might work?

    ~ is understood only by the shell. And not by every shell either.
    Korn and Bourne-again shell (ksh and bash) understand it, I would conjecture, Bourne shell (good old sh) does not.

  • [solved] system crash: / read-only and /home not mounted

    After a complete system crash due to resizing my partitions I am now at the point of restoring everything step by step.
    Having had bunches of kernel panics I can now already boot again into my old system. However, / is mounted as read-only manifesting in error messages for programs that access /var and /usr. Furthermore /home is not mounted at all.

    I did a very dump thing. I deleted my /dev/sda1 ntfs partition, moved /dev/sda2 containing my lvm volumes to the left, resized /dev/sda2 and allocated the free space to my /home logical volume group. Lots of files ended up to be corrupt, I reinstalled all packages and ran fsck several times. Now at least it is starting again. I just found out that the entire root partition is mounted as read-only. In the following is the entire journal excerpt:

  • Access read-only LDAP for username/password, Directory Server LDAP for rest

    Hello! I keep trying to find documentation on the above, but thus far I have been unable to find something that explains this well (and my attempts at figuring out thus far have failed).
    I have a read-only LDAP that is used University wide, and I am not allowed to change how it currently operates. It uses double-bind authentication in that you search for a user to get their DN, then bind to that DN with the users password to see if it was correct.
    I'd like to use the above setup to verify a user's credential as well as return some basic information about them (name, email, etc). After this, I'd like to use another freshly installed Directory Server LDAP to manage the roles that seem to be needed for Portal Server (as I cannot write to the original LDAP).
    Any help or advice on the above would be appreciated! Thank you.

    The authentication you described is the default way LDAP authentication works.
    AM Ldap auth-module allows you to 'pull' attributes from the LDAP server you're using for authentication and store it in it's 'amSDK' Directory Server - which is leveraged by Portal Server (if you're talking about Sun's Portal Server).
    However this is only done if the profile is created (set 'dynamic profile generation' in auth - service).
    As Portal Server does not support the new 'identity repsoistory API' of AM you have to stick to AM's legacy mode when using Portal Server.
    To keep the the data in sync (if needed) you have to write a post-auth class.

  • CRIO startup directory was typed STARTUP and now will not boot. How do I recover from this error or how do I rename the directory when my proxy server is read only due no startup files?

    I loaded files on the cRIO but used upper case letters for the startup directory.  Now I cannot access the RIO since it didn't boot. The proxy server comes up read-only so I can't reload the files or change the directory.  I tried the RS232 port but I can't get it to respond to commands even though I can see the processor boot.

  • Open directory 'read only' after restore

    Hi
    I have restored open directory using sudo slapconfig -restoredb after our server hangs on a restart and subsequently loses the master record, users etc.
    All appears OK except that I am unable to add or remove users via the Server.app. It appears as though the restore process has given the OD read only permissions?
    Any ideas

    Please update Mountain Lion and OS X Server to the latest versions (App Store) and use Workgroup Manager 10.8 to manage your users.

  • [SOLVED] gem installs packages only to home directory

    Hello!
    I need help. I have installed ruby and I'm trying to install it packages. But I have a problem.
    All gems I try to install have placed in HOME/.gem directory. Myself home, if I install from my account, or root home, if I use sudo.
    gem help install
    This command shows in "Defaults" section that install dir is "/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1". But during installation it ignores this. And even option "--install-dir" have no effect. Packages was installed into HOME directory anyway.

    I tried to reinstall whole ruby package and it shows after install
    The default location of gem installs is $HOME/.gem/ruby
    Add the following line to your PATH if you plan to install using gem
    $(ruby -rubygems -e "puts Gem.user_dir")/bin
    If you want to install to the system wide location, you must either:
    edit /etc/gemrc or run gem with the --no-user-install flag.
    I corrected gemrc and now all working.

  • Data Directory read only

    Hi,
    I need my mac to have full access to Data directory and for windows PC have read-only access.
    I have my files under DATA directory, when I use secure disk using accounts under Time capsule and create users the files under my data directory is not visible.
    When I revert the setting to have secure disk using disk password the files are visible.
    Let me know how can I view my data with user accounts, do I need to repair permissions or something ?

    Did some test and noticed :
    When accounts are used a Directory name "Shared" is created under the main DATA directory / partition.
    I moved the data from DATA to DATA/Shared and turned back accounts mode in Time capsule.
    Now I have one user with readonly access and other with full access.
    However I am not able to access the user direcroty which is outside DATA.
    Anyways my data can be safe this way.

    I did install it in the admin account.  Actually the computer has four accounts, one for my husband, where I installed it.  One for me which also is set to admin, one is called TEST and has nothing in it and one is guest user.
    I don't know how AutoCad is interfacing with the account.  That is why I am not sure what to do about it.  I read other threads in various places and some seemed to point to something having to do with having multiple users.  The solutions were not clear.  I was hoping someone else had this problem and could tell me what to do.  I tried apple support but no help.  I have not tried AutoCad yet as I assumed they wont help since this is a free educational version of their product.
