/home directory write protected?

Maybe I'm missing something obvious. I just installed Solaris 2.8, or 8, or whatever it's called (having finally given up on 2.6) and it created the /home directory, owner and group root, with no write permissions. I mean, it is set to 555. When I try to chmod the thing, it says "WARNING: Can't change home". Why can't I change /home? I need to create home directories and profiles under there, to ape another machine that I'm cloning a test server after. Why can't user 'root' open up the permissions on this directory?
I did not install the gui openwindows interface because it is so awkward compared to the command line.
Any help appreciated!

'/home' under solaris is not a regular "ufs" directory, it's one of the mountpoints for the solaris "automounter". See
the man pages automount(1M), automountd(1M) and the
configuration files /etc/auto_master and /etc/auto_home
for more information how to configure the automounter.

    Hi,
My SD card reader is not able to write or delete and format sd cards.
WIN7 x64 Home Basic, 0x80070013 when I trying to write or delete files. When I trying to format I can see a message that disk is write protected.
The card is not locked, it's work in Lenovo Idea Pad s10 without any problem, It's also work in my Pentax camera.
I'm almost sure that the problem is software, but can't find solution.
Could Any one help me please?
Laptop is new, 8 days in use.

I have network shutdown 2.0.1 installed and the pcns process normally would be abend in 1 or 2 minute's time. What could be the problem ? Consider to upgrade the network shutdown to 2.2.1 version. Could the problem be resolved in new version ? Any precaution needs to be taken when installing the new version ?

I want to build a class that runs on Windows/Unix clients. It needs to get to users' home directories (both environments) and write the token on login, delete it on logout.
What method (or code snipet) would get a user's home directory?
What method (or code snipet) would write/delete a file from it?

Even if you are not writing an Applet, this is applicable. But I thot if you were, you might need this.

By internal, I assume you're referring to your systems (boot) drive. Is it, by chance, a partitioned dive?
Also…although many people successfully use their systems drives as scratch disks, over time you'll have better results using a dedicated drive for your media.
    Good luck.

  • Eventually denied permission to write in home directory

    Hello,
My wife is using a Mid-2007, 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac (iMac7,1) with 6GB RAM and more than 1TB of free available HD space.  She is running Mountain Lion (10.8.3) and has administrator privileges.
After she has been using the computer for a while (hours or days; it varies), the system eventually denies her writing privileges to folders in her own Home directory.
    I'll give two common examples:
She'll download a file in Safari (or iTunes), and everything appears to proceed normally until the download "finishes" at which point she receives an error message that says she doesn't have permission to write to the save location.  The download remains in her browser's download list, but the file itself "disappears".  Changing target directories (e.g. from Downloads to Desktop) makes no difference.
TextEdit will automatically reopen upon log in, and display one or more SavedState "Untitled" documents with text in them (she uses it as a scratch pad). When she attempts to add text to one of these documents, e.g. "Untitled 8," an error appears that says she does not have permission to make changes to the document and is prompted to make a Duplicate, so she does so.  She can successfully enter text in "Untitled 8 (copy)" but when it comes time to save the file, another error is returned that claims she does not have permission to write to [whatever location].
Only two things seem to correct this situation, neither of which are permanent. That is, it eventually happens again.
    1. She logs out and logs back in. Things will behave normally for a while.  This is a pain, of course, because she typically discovers the problem when she is in the middle on working on one or more things, and the login process is fairly slow (as are most things on this iMac since upgrading to Mountain Lion -- though better since restricting the activity of Sophos Antivirus).
    2. Repair the permissions in her Home directory:  Get Info, click the lock & enter her password, change the Privilege of Me from Read & Write to Read Only, then back to Read & Write, and finally click the gear so as to Apply to enclosed items.  Once this is finished, access is restored... until it happens again.  Funny thing about this particular procedure is that her permissions appear to be set normally at the outset, ie., Read & Write.
Another odd thing about the download problem is that the system does not seem to have a problem writing to whatever temporary directory it uses during the downloading process. The error only comes once the file is complete.
There does not seem to be any precipitating event that leads to this change in her permissions/access privileges.
Repairing permissions using Disk Utility does not resolve the problem.
Running other kinds of repairs (repair disk when booted in Recovery Mode, running Drive Genius 3 from a separate partition or from the optical media, TechTool Pro, etc.) do not resolve the problem.
When I log in to this same computer using my account (also with admin privileges), I have yet to encounter this eventual-permission-denial problem.
Any thoughts or recommendations are welcome, obviously.  This is driving us batty!

Hmmm, sounded like a RAM problem until you mentioned your account doesn't do it.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • No write permissions in my home directory

    Hi,
I'm having a weird issue with my Mac. I am unable to create new files or directories in my home directory. For instance:
    Bergy Bit> cd ~
    Bergy Bit> cp temp.txt temp1.txt
    cp: temp1.txt: Permission denied
I can override this with sudo, but it's a major pain to do this every time. I have no problem writing in any of the sub-directories in my home directory. Here's the output from ls -ale in /Users:
    Bergy Bit> ls -ale

    Any ideas what's going on?
    Thanks,
    Lisa

    The standard ACE is
    group:everyone deny delete
I don't know how you got all of that other stuff.
You should be able to fix it with:sudo chmod =a# 0 "group:everyone deny delete" /Users/lgerhardt/

  • Can't copy write-protected folder to new location

After doing a clean-install of Snow Leopard, and restoring home directory from Time Machine, I am unable to use the Finder to copy certain write-protected folders to a new location. Folder and all contents are owned by me, and using the Terminal to *cp -r* the folder and its contents works just fine. Trying to Command-C and Command-V the folder to the Desktop, say, or to click-drag or option-click-drag the folder itself cause a grayed-out version of the folder to appear briefly on the Desktop, and then disappear with no dialog box, indicated error, or entry in the log files.
Interestingly, creating a new folder, changing it to read-only, and moving it with the Finder IS successful. This behavior only seems to be affecting files that were restored using Time Machine.
A screencapture of this behavior is at http://www.crashwhite.com/tmp/finder_bug.mov
    Any ideas? I'm mystified!
    Thanks...

Hi, V.K, and thanks for checking in. To respond to your questions:
    • chmodding to 755 or anything else that gives me write permission allows the move or copy to occur as expected.
    • chmodding to 444 is a means of archiving the state of a folder and its contents. I do this to avoid corrupting a year's worth of documents. In the past (w/ Tiger, Leopard, etc.), I've been able to copy an "archived" directory into the new writeable directory with no difficulty.
    • In Terminal:
    +$ ls -ladeO Documents/arc/edu/poly/poly\ 08-09/wasc/+
    *dr-xr-xr-x 3 rwhite rwhite - 102 Oct 11 11:16 Documents/arc/edu/poly/poly 08-09/wasc/*
    +$ ls -ladeO Desktop+
    *drwx------+ 15 rwhite rwhite - 510 Oct 11 13:19 Desktop*
    *0: group:everyone deny delete*
I am unfamiliar with ACL--hadn't actually ever heard of it until now--so I'm going to start digging about a bit. It would appear that the + at the end of the Desktop listing indicates that there is an ACL that is having some effect here.
Re: my installation, I began with a standard migration, but that process left some cruft in my system that was slowing the system (lots of log errors from old stuff that was no longer installed), so I did a clean install: wiped drive completely, installed new from Snow Leopard, and did a Restore of user directory from Time Machine. I believe that used Migration Assistant to migrate from TM, but it may have been that I simply did a Restore from TM.
Off to go research ACL a little more. Thanks for the tip, and any additional advice you might have!
    Cheers,
    Richard

  • Run script after home directory mounts??

Does anyone know if there is a way to run a script when a user logs in that will run after the users home directory mounts. Currently a user logs in, the script runs via a login hook then the home directory mounts. I need the home directory to mount first then the script to run. The users are authenticating to active directory. Please help!!!

Any resources on how to write a launchd script? Here's what my applescript looks like. I'd like to convert this to launchd so it will run after the home directory mounts:
    tell application "Finder"
    mount volume "smb://server05/assignments$"
    end tell
    tell application "Finder"
    mount volume "afp://Macapps:[email protected]/MacApps"
    end tell

  • Problem with user home directory redirection on OS X

It appears that the Authorware 7.01 runtime gets confused
when home directory redirection is used on Mac OS X to redirect a
    user's directory to the network.
I suspect it is a problem with the path to the Application
Support folder where Authorware stores its .rec files.
That happens is that JumpFileReturn returns to the start of
the piece, rather then returning to where the jump was performed.
As anyone else seen this? Is there any workaround?
On Windows one can setup and ini file to tell Authorware
where to store temporary files. Is there any such equivalent on
    Mac?

I'm not sure of the process on macs that match the use of the
    ini file, but
the goal was always identical operation on both platforms so
    it's very
likely that the ini file is read and interpreted in the same
    manner.
It seems that the 'initial' location of the current records
    folder is the
one that's messed up. The .rec file is created on the local
    machine rather
than the redirected one. I can only guess that either the
    home folder isn't
redirected until after the first AW piece starts or the
    initial setting is
being set to a 'default' location for the user rather than
    asking the system
what the current location is. A solution might be to create a
    "launcher"
application with Authorware designed to start up and jump to
    what is
currently your startup piece. This way the RecordsLocation
    should be changed
to the network location and you can ignore the original rec
    file since
you'll never return to that first location.

  • FileSync Failure On Mobile Account Home Directory

    Hardware
    Server
    Mac Mini Mid-2012, OS X 10.9.5, Server 3.1.2, OpenDirectory ON, HomeDirectory: /Volumes/HomeFolders/Users
    Client
    iMac 21.5-inch, Late 2012, OS X 10.9.5, MobileAccount
    Network
Server exists on a foreign subnet. Client binds to OD Replica on local network. Authentication works without issue. SSH connections to Server work flawlessly. SCP can be used to move files across the network without issue.
    Situation
User account automatically creates a mobile profile on any system used. This is set in Workgroup Manager for all users of this User's type.
The local machine has successfully created a Mobile Account for the user, and User is able to use the machine without complication, except that User complains none of his personal files are present.
Home Sync reports last sync as being "Incomplete".
    Attempted Corrections
The log file had indicated that the synchronization process was being cancelled by the next synchronization which started automatically after 20 minutes. To correct this problem, I changed the HomeSync settings to start only on "Manual" requests.
After this change, I observed that the log file that a file was missing.  I ran SCP to duplicate the home folder on the local machine, replacing the home folder that had been already created.  I no longer find the missing file issue.
I found an article suggesting that deleting the .FileSync folder from the local and remote home folders would force the system to re-evaluate the status of the sync.  I deleted these folders in order to allow the system to recreate them.  The system continues to have Incomplete home sync processes.
    Help Required
I am unable to interpret the remaining EXCEPTION lines in the log file.  I appreciate any help deciphering the next steps in fixing the Home Sync process.  I appreciate any tips or advice on what causes Home Sync to fail in these situations, and if any person has information on how to create a local mirror that would be referenced for the HomeSync rather than the main server, that information would be greatly appreciated.

Some of your user files (not system files) have incorrect permissions or are locked. This procedure will unlock those files and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
Back up all data before proceeding.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window (triple-click, copy, and paste):
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • DIAdem 9.1; Windows2000; right problem; "Configuration-Drive Write Protected" for USER

    Hallo community !
    similar to these threads

    http://forums.ni.com/ni/board/message?board.id=60&message.id=647&requireLogin=False
i run into problems working with DIAdem 9.1 on Windows 2000 SP4!
The Diadem installation went quite well.
    My problem:
only "Administrator" and "Power User" have the privilige to "WRITE" to the DIAdem install directory.
Trying to start Diadem as non priviliged USER I get something like:
    DIAdem Configuration-Drive "C:\PROGRAM FILES\ NATIONAL INSTRUMENT\DIADEM 9.10" WRITE PROTECTED!
I installed & started DIAdem for one
time with Administrator rights. I activated the Product and exported
the KEY to a License Server. Everything works fine for Power Users an
Administrators. Only "simple" USERs are not able to start Diadem due to
missing WRITE permissions.  i can't grand this permissions to
    normal USERs :-(
Playing around in Registry -> "RegWriteAccessAllow" ("0","1") (DWORD) (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/National Instruments/Diadem/9.10),
    didn't solved the problem.
I switched back to "local License" Managment (local Key files) but the Probelm persists.
    thanks in advance
    P.S.
Quote: "You have to be at least a "Power User" in Windows 2000 to run DIAdem in Windows 2000."

Message Edited by DirkT on 08-01-2005 03:58 PM
Message Edited by DirkT on 08-01-2005 04:02 PM

    Hi DirkT,
Running DIAdem with User rights has different aspects we need to look at.
    1) Registry Write Access
Launching DIAdem the first time with administrative rights registers some OLE components in the registry. After this step no more Admin rights are necessary for the registry. However running DIAdem as user might result in error messages as DIAdem tries to re-register the components again. You can avoid this by setting the RegWriteAccessAllow Key to 0 (see online help under "Administrator Notes")
    2) File / Folder Write Access to the DIAdem Installation Folder
DIAdem needs write access to certain files e.g. the error logfile DEM_ERRS.001 or DESKTOP.DDD when saving configurations. You may change the folder where these file are being stored and searched for to a writeable folder by launching DIAdem with the "/d<NewFolder\MyDesktop.ddd>" start parameter or by setting the environment variable "DemDDD" to that folder. Then move the following files from the DIAdem installation folder to your new writeable folder:
    *.ddd
    userpar.par
    dem_errs.*
    3) File / Folder Write Access to other Folders
There are a number of other folders that DIAdem 9.x needs write access to and which cannot be changed. All of these folders are located by default under "%ProgramFiles%\National Instruments\Shared". Currently you need your Admin to give you write access to that folder and below
For future versions of DIAdem the team is working to make running under user rights easier.
    Hope that helps,
    Marcus

  • "The scratch disks are write protected or unavailable" on NEW project on PrE

I am running PrE 10 on Windows 7 64 bit.  My computer has two internal hard drives (C and E).  I want to put my projects and all scratch disks on E, the non-OS drive.  When I try to create a NEW project and designate a directory I have already created on E, I get the following message from PrE 10:
"The scratch disks are write protected or unavailable..."
The program won't let me use E.  However, when I check the drive, it HAS created a .PRV directory in the Preview Files directory and a .prel file in the Encoded Files directory.  So it is actually able to write to drive E.
    What gives?  Thanks.
    Jon

    Thanks, Bill and John.
I am running from an administrator account, but I wasn't running "as administrator."  I had already changed the permissions to give everybody everything.
Here is what I discovered.  Running "as administrator" made no difference.  So I ran the program "normally" again.  Then I discovered that although the program was giving me the "The scratch disks are write protected or unavailable..." message, it was actually setting things up properly on my E drive.  When I continued to use the newly created project, the correct directories and files had been set up on my E drive, and I was able to direct my captures to that drive as well.  I haven't done much work on the project yet, but it appears to be working just fine so far.
I just now created ANOTHER new project on the E drive, and PrE did NOT give me the error message.  Everything got set up properly.  Hmm.  It looks as if that message it put out in error, or, at the very least, unhelpfully!
By the way, what is Encore, and how would it play a part here?
    Thanks.
    Jon

  • More than one network home directory? (newbie question)

I have a brand new shiny XServer for a small school. They wanted their Macs managed and secured so I eagerly started moving ahead with it. Now, because of the specific file sharing requirements of the school (teachers want access to student accounts and files for homework and such) I created a standard, by-the-book Network Home folder. Then I thought about it, and I shared another directory as a Network User Home folder. And now none of my networked user accounts can log in. They all give me "can't log in, there is an error".
Is what I did possible? Allowed? Recommended? Discouraged? Can you actually define two separate Network User Home folders on the same server, and then assign different users to different home folders? My server crapped out and now I may have to wipe/reinstall the whole thing to fix it.
Does anybody have any experience with home folders like that?
Any information would be dearly appreciated,
    Thanks.

Each user can have one and only one home directory, network or local. (Yes, even if you use Mobile Accounts or Portable Homes each account still has one home directory. You just have multiple copies of the user account and each copy has one home.)
You can have multiple share points that serve as home directory share points. In other words, not all of your users' homes need to be stored in the same place. By "network home directory share point," we mean a shared folder (share point) that has a corresponding dynamic automount record in the directory domain. The share point mounts at /Network/Servers/servername/path/to/sharepoint, and users defined in the directory domain can have their network homes defined there.
If you want to grant a group of teachers (let's call it teachers for simplicity) read/write access to student home directories, I'd suggest the following strategy:
    1. Create two network home directory share points - one to house the students' homes and one to house the teachers' homes. For this example, let's say that the student home directory share point is located at /Volumes/Disk1/StudentHomes.
    2. Create home directories for each student as you normally would.
    3. Then add an ACL that allows members of the teachers group to read/write within the student home directory share point. For our example:
    sudo chmod -R +ai "group:teachers allow readattr,readextattr,readsecurity,list,search,\
    read,execute,writeattr,writeextattr,delete,deletechild,add_file,addsubdirectory,\
    write,append,fileinherit,directoryinherit" /Volumes/Disk1/StudentHomes.
    4. Now teachers simply navigate to /Network/Servers/yourservername/path.../StudentHomes/student's name and dig around to find what they want. (The teachers have read/write control of all student home directories now.)
    5. When your teachers find it a little inconvenient to dig around in each student's home, suggest the following alternative: Simply create a share point to which students have read-only access and teachers can read/write. Within that share point, create "turn-in" folders for each teacher or class, and give students write-only (drop box) permission to the sub-folder. You could get more granular than this simple example where all students can turn anything into any teacher's "turn-in" folder, though.

  • Create Home Directory in NetWare with the OIM 9.1

I am trying to find out if there is a way to create a NetWare User home directory with OIM 9.1 and the eDirectory Connector?
    Edited by: user11137756 on May 6, 2009 11:42 AM

I'm confused. It looks like you already have /home configured:
    <pre># zpool status
    pool: home
    state: ONLINE
    scan: none requested
    config:
    NAME STATE READ WRITE CKSUM
    home ONLINE 0 0 0
    c4t3d0 ONLINE 0 0 0
    errors: No known data errors
    # zfs list
    NAME USED AVAIL REFER MOUNTPOINT
    home 86K 134G 32K /home
    ...</pre>
What is the problem? Looks like you already have /home configured. Are you sure automounter is not running?
    Try this:
    <pre>zfs set mountpoint=none home
    rm -rf /home
    zfs set mountpoint=/home home</pre>

  • Portable Home Directory no longer works on Lion bound to Active DirectoryAD

    Hi, All,
I look after about 30 MacBook Air/Pro connected to a predominantly Windows corporate network.
A few months back, I installed a MacOS Server running OpenDirectory and Software Update Services for managing the MacBooks - they are configured in the standard "magic triangle" configuration, bound both to the Active Directory (running on a handfull of Windows 2003-R2 servers) and OpenDirectory; they are configured to use the Mac Server for Software Updates, and with Portable Home Directories replicated on a network share point (through AFP) to keep a backup of the user's data.
When all the MacBooks were running Snow Leopard, everything was running fine... but the last couple of laptops purchased came with Lion and they cannot synchronise their PHD's anymore :-(
I have spent a lot of time trying to pin-point the problem, including replicating a whole test-network with its own AD/OD and client Snow-Leopard/Lion laptops to try various configurations... my conclusions so far are that:
1- using Snow Leopard clients, it just works
2- using a Lion client, when the network user account is configured in the default Users O.U. on Active Directory, it just works
3- using a Lion client, when the network user account is configured in another O.U. than Users (e.g. Company-Name or External-Contractors), then the PHD syncinc doesn't work at all
4- the failure symptoms are a popup window when trying to do a manual sync saying that "your network home at (null) does not allow writing" - if automatic syncing is configured through MCX, it just fails silently
5- when PHD syncing fails, I can log on using the network account, manually mount the share point used for the network home in the Finder and read and write to it without a problem; so it' not a permission problem, but the fact that the network home directory is (null)
6- I have traced the root cause to the FileSyncAgent process which raises an exception at startup - here's what I see as the salient lines from the logfile (i've edited out the username):

7- if I use the same user account from a Snow-Leopard client, the mountPeerVolume finds the remote home_dir, mounts it and happilly trawls through the two directories to figure out what needs to be copied; I get something along the lines of:
    0:: [12/02/08 18:44:15.344] Starting manual sync of "HomeSync_Mirror".
    1:: [12/02/08 18:44:15.363] -[SPeer_FS_PHD mountPeerVolume]: We've been given remote home path "/Volumes/[USERNAME]".
    1:: [12/02/08 18:44:15.363] -[SPeer_FS_PHD mountPeerVolume]: Remote home path exists.
    1:: [12/02/08 18:44:15.363] -[SPeer_FS_PHD mountPeerVolume]: Final path to PHD remote home root = "/Volumes[USERNAME]"
8- if I use a Lion client and a user account configured in the Users O.U. on Active Directory, it works similarly well
9- in the failing use-case, if I run a "dscl xxx -read /Users/xxx" to verify that the DirectoryServices deamon returns some information, all looks good: I get all my A.D. user details, including email config and network home_directory, the MCX payload, etc
10- the only difference that I can see when running dscl between the "working use-case" and the "failing use-case" is that the Attribute for the network home directory is called HomeDirectory (working) or OriginalHomeDirectory (failing) - but the actual value is present and correct in both cases
11- I have enabled SMB as well as AFP file sharing to ensure that it's not a protocol problem rather than the share point itself that causes problem - no difference
12- I have upgraded the MacOS Server to 10.7.3 (from 10.7.2) - no difference
13- I have upgraded the Lion client from 10.7.2 to 10.7.3 - no difference
14- I have tried to manually configure the Directory Search path on the Lion client to map HomeDirectory to OriginalHomeDirectory - either the mapping didn't work or it's not the real cause of the problem, as again: no difference.
15- I have contacted AppleCare, raised a case with all the details above, been escalated from level 1 to 2 and 3 - and basically have been told that customers have reported very similar problems & that no more detail is available to me as it is a Directory Services related problem - if I want to take it further with Apple, I need Enterprise OS Support (and hence $1000s per year - and no real guarantee of result)
[thanks to anyone who's read until now]...
So my questions are (as I can't believe that I'm the only one using "proper O.U.'s" for managing users in Active Directory):
    - has anyone experienced this before?
    - does someone know of a workaround (other than "stick to SnowLeo" or "redesign your whole A.D."!)?
    - can someone help me figure out where the FileSyncAgent process tries to get its remote home directory from - as this might point to a solution?
    Many thanks

I was able to fix the issue here. Steps Taken:  From the comand line I ran
    dscl /Search read /Users/jdoe HomeDirectory
It returned # No such key: HomeDirectory
This was the big clue.... it should have returned
    HomeDirectory: <home_dir><url>afp://files.hihllc.lan/Users/jdoe</url><path>/</path></home_dir>
I unbound the Mac from AD and ran the following command in terminal.
    dscacheutil -flushcache
I then went into OS X sharing preferences and renamed the computer slightly, so it would create a new computer record in AD. I rebound the machine to AD making sure in Directory Utility Advanced, under User Experience that Force local home directory on start up disk was unchecked and Network protocol to be used was AFP.
    I then ran
    dscl /Search read /Users/jdoe HomeDirectory
    and it returned
    HomeDirectory: <home_dir><url>afp://files.hihllc.lan/Users/jdoe</url><path>/</path></home_dir>
I had the user reboot... which was necessary. When he logged in HomeSync fired up. He had quite a few conflicts, so I told him to select use files on this computer for all conflicts.
I checked the FileSyncAgent.logs and it was good.
Let me know if this fixes your issue.
    Thanks,
    Ray
