Home sharing with iTunes 10.7, iOS 6 and A-tv 5.1.1 fixed

I have finally resolved all the issues I was having with home sharing after installing iTunes 10.7, iOS 6, and Apple TV 5.1.1.  Everything with home sharing was failing; movies would never load, music would start plaing but then start buffering.  None of my Apple devices were working. I have been trying to resolve this for weeks now.  My solution was the 5 GHz WiFi on a Linksys E3200.  I disabled the the 5 GHz and everything started working.  I the went through every wireless setting but nothing worked with the 5 GHz turned on.
I hope this helps,
Laz

I just don't understand why it's so hard for all of us to acknowledge the simple fact that Home Share (and Match) simply don't work. They don't, that's all. Apple is great for hardware, but lousy on software (see also me.com, Final Cut, etc.)
Why in the world should I spend my time trying to fix something that someone else has made, without gettin paid, when the same team who created it isn't able to fix it? I just don't understand.
Every few days somebody comes up with a fix for Home Share, only to repost a few days later with a "wrong, it stopped working again".
I really don't mean to be offensive, and I really appreciate other fellow's hints and helps in this forum,I try to give my help as well when I know of a solution, but when it doesn't work we should just drop it. iTunes is a lost case, sadly.

  • Anybody having problems with home sharing with iTunes 10.5, iOS 5 and the VZW iPhone 4?

I installed the updated itunes 10.5.  Updated my Verizon iPhone 4 to iOS 5.  So far so good with one exception.... I can't get home sharing to work properly.  I've enabled home sharing (via my Apple ID) on both iTunes and my iPhone.  I've disabled, reset and messed with my firewall to no end.  But even though home sharing appears enabled, I never get the option to access 'shared' as is supposed to be present when pressing the 'more' selection in the ipod app on the iPhone.  It's not there.  Also even though sharing is enabled in iTunes, I don't see home sharing in the tree on the left column in iTunes.  (It appears briefly when I enable home sharing, but disappears as soon as I acknowledge that I've enabled home sharing)  I'm running Windows 7 (32bit) with Norton Security Suite.  And my WIFI connection from my phone to my network is present.
    Help?

Well after trying all of that a few times, I re-read an Apple document in regards to home sharing problems (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2972).  Yep and in their document, did that, did that, did that... hmmm wait a second... I didn't do this and in fact this is the only thing I didn't do.... So I did it and voila`, it worked.
Anyway, I cycled the power on my Linksys E2000 wireless router.  That's it.  I didn't have to change any settings in the router.  Now every time the 'shared' selection is available on my iPhone and it is definitely a sweet feature!
I hope that this solves your problem as well (assuming you haven't already tried it!)
As for iCloud, I don't think the music in the cloud functionality is available yet.  I believe that's to arrive at some future (hopefully sooner than later!) date.  Not positive though.... it may already be available and I too don't quite know how to use it!

  • Home sharing with itunes

I have the most recent version of itunes and am now unable to use Home sharing or Itunes Match.  I have checked all connections, software updates, restarted, re-booted to no avail.  Any tips on a fix by the community would be appreciated.

  • Home Sharing with iTunes 9 and Vista

I just downloaded and installed iTunes 9 on both of my Vista boxes. I am trying to use the Home Sharing feature. I clicked on Advanced> Turn On Home Sharing. I enter my Apple account info and click Create Home Share. A box pops up that says Home Sharing could not be activated because this computer is not authorized for the account "myusername". Please authorize this computer and try again.
So, I clicked on Store> Deauthorize computer.
Then, I clicked on Store> Authorize computer.
It gave me a pop up that says something like you have authorized two of your 5 available computers.
I tried turning on Home Sharing again and still got the same error that this computer is not authorized.
Then, I tried going to Store> Sign Out
Then Store> Sign In and doing the deauthroize/authorize process again.. still same results.
So, lastly, I tried going to Store> View My Account and deauthorizing ALL computers... so that reset my authorizations.
Then I signed out of the store, signed back in, authorized both machines... still I get the error on both that the computer is not authorized so it cannot turn on Home Sharing.
    Any suggestions?

in order for home sharing to work
    (a) iTunes on all machines must be authorized for the same iTunes store account
    (b) all machines must be on the same network
    (c) all machines must have access to the internet.

  • Home sharing with itunes not finishing songs

    Hi,
I have a strange problem with iTunes.  I currently use an old Intel iMac as an itunes server, feeding an Apple TV 3 and two Macbook Pro's with songs/movies/TV Shows using WiFi.  Recently, I upgraded the iMac HDD to an SSD and placed the iTunes library on an external 1TB drive.  Ever since this upgrade I have experienced problems with Home Sharing.  It seems that certain songs will not play through to the end when streamed through the Apple TV or either laptop.  Only certain songs are affected and will get a certain way through and then seemingly come to an abrupt end (the next song will then start).  Play back on the iMac itself is fine, its only when using Home Sharing.
As I said, only certain songs are affected but it seems to be consistently the same songs.  With 1 song it will play back the first 30 seconds and then go quiet, although the screen shows as if the song is playing!?
The iMac is running Lion with the latest patches and version of iTunes.  I have tried rebooting, restarting iTunes and repairing disk permissions with no luck.
    Any ideas?

I am replying to my own message as I have solved this problem and others may have the same issue and the fix I applied may work for them too.
After a short search on the internet I came across an apple support page with instructions on rebuilding the iTunes library.  I followed the steps and after rebuilding my playlist my songs now play through to the end on my Apple TV.

  • Transfering Music using Home Sharing with iTunes 9.2.1

I used home sharing on many occasions in earlier versions of iTunes just for playing music. The shared libraries had a small house icon next to them. Everything was fine and dandy until I decided to step it up a bit, by attempting to transfer music from my main library (on my iMac with iTunes 9.2.1) to my PC laptop (running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit with iTunes 9.2.1). A cryptic error message was shown when i tried to drag a song from my shared iMac library to my hard drive library (on my pc), following the icon for the library changing to a blue stack of music notes. I then tried the reverse, attempting, on my imac, to change the home sharing settings so that my library would sync with my pc's library, after which the icon changed to the blue stack of music notes. In both cases, the "Settings..." button and "Import" buttons disappeared as shown in the following graphic:
    http://km.support.apple.com/library/APPLE/APPLECAREALLGEOS/HT3819/HT38195-en.png
Both computers now will play each other's library music but will not allow for me to change home sharing settings nor transfer the music.
If anyone knows how to rectify this issue or can better explain why iTunes is acting this way, please respond to this post. Your responses will be greatly appreciated.

  • Home sharing with iTunes 11

I am able to open both home shares on our computers and can see the library I want to take tv shows from, but can't figure out how to actually move the tv show from his library to mine.

    Hello, Aviator717.
Thank you for the question.  Here are a couple articles that will help you troubleshoot this issue.  Try steps four through seven in the first article.  If the issue persist, try updating your Wi-Fi router to the recommended settings for optimized performance.

  • Images not shared with Itunes

It seems that my images stopped sharing with Itunes some months ago and i am not sure if it is broken or a setting is turned off or what?

The integration between itunes and Aperture is messed up. It just doesn't work correctly. here's a test I did after having odd things happening with iTunes:
    - Selecting *Favorites Only* in Aperture then quitting (allowing for the sharing preview function to complete) and restarting iTunes resulted in all albums disappearing - leaving only the top level categories (empty since they're not albums). Only way to get things back was to restart Aperture, select Show All, force one preview generation, quit Aperture and restart iTunes - I mentioned forcing a preview because that's the only way I was able to recover my album list in iTunes... go figure. Note that iTunes instantly deleted all my photos from Apple TV as soon as it lost the album list, but when the list reappeared (after the procedure I described) all my previous album selections were intact and syncing put everything back.
Another major annoyance: adding ANYTHING to Aperture (project, album, light table) will ALWAYS shift the selection in iTunes. It's as if iTunes relies on an album's order number and not its name to identify it. So everytime I import new images ( I work with dated projects) or create a new album, I need to make sure I visit iTunes as soon as I quit Aperture otherwise I end up with random or deleted images on my Apple TV.
These are very annoying issues and quite un-Apple like. And btw, nothing like this happens with iPhoto.
Maybe these tests will shed some light on your problems...

    Hi ashleymartinsmith!
I have an article for you that may help you understand Home Sharing a little better:
    Understanding Home Sharing
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3819
Home Sharing in iTunes is designed to let you easily share your iTunes media libraries between up to five computers in your household. You can also use Home Sharing to play your iTunes content on your iOS devices and Apple TV (2nd generation) if they are connected to your home Wi-Fi network.
The important thing to note here is that all connected devices must be on the same Wi-Fi network for Home Sharing to be functional. Thanks for coming to the Apple Support Communities!

  • HT202213 Trying to activate home sharing with new iTunes update, says error #5506, any ideas?  Worked great before this update!

I'm trying to use home sharing with the latest iTunes update.  Keep getting error message 5506-any idea how to resolve this error and share at home?

Well, I tried a few other things and one worked but again just the first time I tried connecting to the desktop PC with iTunes. I flashed my router with the latest update and the ATV2 could see the iTunes library and I was able to play media. Later in the day I was going to show off to my daughter that I had fixed it and, to my dismay, no go. I tried opening the suggested ports but no luck.
I then tried loading iTunes on a Win7 laptop and it works perfectly with the ATV2. Both the laptop and the ATV2 are connected to the router wirelessly while the Desktop is connected to the router by Ethernet. Not sure if this is part of the issue as it sounds like this didn't work for others. The only other difference between the laptop and desktop is that the desktop has Win7 SP1 loaded while the laptop does not; now I'm scarred to load it though I don't think that's the issue. All in all, a very vexing situation. Hopefully Apple comes up with a solution soon.

  • Home sharing with iOS remote app stopped working

In my home, I have four macs (3 minis and an imac), each with their own iTunes media library, and 2 ATVs.  Home Sharing is turned on, with the same ID on all of these devices.  When I operate each device natively (using keyboard/mouse or ATV hard remote), I can see the music library on each of the other devices, and play that music.  I also have an iPhone and an iPad, with the Remote app installed, and using the same Home Sharing ID.  On each of these, I can see each of the macs and ATVs, and the music in their individual libraries, and can play that music on the device on which that library resides.  So far, so good.
What I can't do, although I could do it several weeks ago, is use the remote app to access one device, and then play music from the shared library on another device.  I can see the other devices' libraries, but when I select "music" within that device, it says "no songs".  This is very curious, and like I said, it worked a few weeks ago.
Has anyone seen this issue, and do you know how to fix it?
    Thanks.

But this is where the problem starts. While I am using the remote app, I exit the app to do something else on the phone. I go back into the app, and the app attempts to connect to my iTunes library. It fails!!
I'm having this exact same problem. I was using the remote app with iTunes on my computer and speakers connected to my airport express for months with no issues at all. It worked flawlessly. But I got the new apple tv a few days ago and had to turn on home sharing as part of the setup...and then the problems began. I started having the exact issue described by the original post: the remote app will just randomly not be able to see my iTunes library. Sometimes it works fine, sometimes it just sits there spinning for a while and eventually says it couldn't find my library. If I wait a few minutes it will eventually just start working again.
This is extremely annoying and is making me want to just return the apple tv and go back to my previous setup which worked perfectly. If Apple would at least acknowledge the problem and that a fix will be forthcoming, I would be satisfied.
