Hostname disappeared

I wasn't sure if I should've put this here or in the network forum, but since I am a newbie to Archlinux I'll post it here.
I installed Arch today, following the tutorial on the wiki, and everything seemed to be working smoothly.  After a reboot, after installing a LXDE and rebooting, however:
My hostname seems to have disappeared, or in some way unable to set.
When I boot up and get to the login prompt I get:
Arch Linux (Core Dump) 2.6.25-ARCH ((none)) (vc/1)
(none) login:
once I've logged in, my prompt agrees with the login, there is no hostname:
[user@(none) ~]$
HOSTNAME is set properly in both /etc/rc.conf and /etc/hosts, yet the hostname stays as (none).
If I type hostname in the prompt, I get the same "(none)", even if I try to set it manually with hostname=myhost.
Anyone got a suggestion?
Thanks for your help

  • Default DNS server unknown its coming while resolving`

    Hi
i have windows 2012 domain controllers, able to successfully resolve dns queries.
But the problem is while resolving default server field its coming unknown. i created reverse lookup for dns server(Domain controller) after that host name is coming..
But after one day again hostname disappeared, default server field unknown coming..
    If anybody knows this issue..

    Hi,
Have you checked if the reverse lookup record is still present in the reverse lookup zone. Domain Controllers use dynamic registration to register A/PTR records for itself. Make sure Enterprise Domain Controllers group has permissions over the records so
these can be updated. This is found in on the security tab at the record/zone propetties. If you manually created the PTR record then it should have no timestamp therefore it will not be scavanged in case you enabled that function.
    Hope this helps.
    Regards,
    Calin

As a recent convert, I am not sure what should be running and what should not. I copied the below from my last log in and am hoping someone can take a look and tell me if something is running that shouldn't be running. I know this is not a short list of processes, so I very much appreciate everyone's time and help!

I didn't realize I was running VirtualBox. So, perhaps that's the problem. I uninstalled it to see if there is any correction. What was happening was that the cursor or arrow would simply disappear for 3-5 seconds when a page was loading in Firefox, or when I was saving a small document. If I moved the cursor while it was gone (to try to find it), it took even longer.
I'll give this a shot and post back with any results. Thanks for your help.
Btw, I noticed the "garbage" comment in the log, too. Thought that was funny! Although new to the OS, I love the Mac.
    Thanks again.

  • Startup disk disappear from the desktop

Well, without any reason, The startup disk is disappear from the desktop.
    (Just only the startup disk)
I found this 2 times before, once on my 8 cores Mac Pro, once on my iMac G5.
I couldn't do anything to fix them, so I formatted and re-install OS.
with my iMac, it ran Tiger before, there's no problem until I changed to Leopard,
After about 2 weeks under the new Leopard, then the startup disk disappear from the desktop,
it shown the hidden status in disk utility and could not mount it,
So I formatted and back to install old Tiger.
Everything's fine. that's really good Operating system.
Bad luck, about 2 months ago, My iMac G5 had some problem with motherboard and the harddisk also damaged, I send it to Apple Thailand, They fixed it and send back with installed Leopard inside my new hard disk.(well... again)
Now after a few weeks. it happen again.
Startup disk disappear from the desktop.
This problem never exist on my Mac Pro, just with the iMac G5.
(Please don't tell me to check the finder preference about the sidebar setting.
it's already set to show every items there even the iDisk)
I wondered why I don't see anyone have problem with this.
I'm really want to find the answer about this.
I asked this question to Apple Thailand's support team but they didn't have any idea.
    Who's gonna answer this

I found a solution to the problem and posted it here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1858340&stqc=true
    I pasted the solution below:
    from a Terminal window, type:
    ls -lOd /
(That's lowercase ell, lowercase ess, space, minus, lowercase ell, capital oh, lowercase dee, space, forward slash)
You should get something like this:
    hostname:~ username$ ls -lOd /
    drwxrwxr-t 32 root admin - 1156 Feb 8 20:35 /
Sounds like you might see something like this instead:
    hostname:~ username$ ls -lOd /
    drwxrwxr-t@ 32 root admin hidden 1156 Feb 8 20:35 /
(note it says "hidden" instead of "-")
    To fix this, type:
    sudo chflags nohidden /
and provide your admin password. You won't get any output back from the command but the icon should now appear on your desktop, and the hidden flag should go away if you repeat the 'ls -lOd /' command.
And just in case you missed it above, you've got to be sure Hard disks are turned on in Finder General Preferences under "Show these items on the Desktop"

  • DNS on Server 2008 R2: DNS A records strangely disappear

    Hello,
I am experiencing very strange problems with my DNS (Server 2008 R2, AD integrated). Several A records for Windows clients are missing, and even if I register them as static they somehow disappear again. However, the AAAA records are still around (IPv6 is
running in default configuration, I haven't touched that at all), but another strange thing here is, most of them are listed as STATIC records.
At present, the DHCP server is set to NOT register the clients with DNS. DNS accepts only secure updates, scavenging is disabled. (I am somewhat reluctant to disable dynamic updates on the DNS server completely because I think the DCs register and update
lots of records dynamically). When I register all missing A records, most affected clients loose it again within an hour or so but some seem be fine. It seems to me that about 20 % of the clients are affected.
I have enabled Directory Service Changes auditing, and its in fact the machine account which appears to be responsible. Clients with A records generate 10 entries (ID 5136) in the DC's security log while the problematic clients generate only the
first 5 events. So it appears to me that they can delete the record but not create a new one. All clients are set to register themselves with DNS.
As far as I remember I had Windows clients with missing A records in the past once in a while but the problem became really serious only about one and half weeks ago.
Does anyone have an idea of what might be going on here? Can I safely disable DNS dynamic updates without adversely affecting AD/DC functionality? Generally, we don't actually need dynamic updates.
    Cheers, Georg.

What operating system are the clients?
I would like to first point out how registration works with static and DHCP, and the differences depending on how DHCP is configured.
    =====================================================
    1. By default, Windows 2000 and newer statically configured machines will
register their own A record (hostname) and PTR (reverse entry) into DNS.
    2. If set to DHCP, a Windows 2000, 2003 or XP machine, will request DHCP to allow
the machine itself to register its own A (forward entry) record, but DHCP will register its PTR
    (reverse entry) record.
    3. If Windows 2008/Vista, or newer, the DHCP server always registers and updates client information in DNS.
Note: "This is a modified configuration supported for DHCP servers
running Windows Server 2008 and DHCP clients. In this mode,
the DHCP server always performs updates of the client's FQDN,
leased IP address information, and both its host (A) and
pointer (PTR) resource records, regardless of whether the
client has requested to perform its own updates."
Quoted from, and more info on this, see:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd145315(v=WS.10).aspx
    4. The entity that registers the record in DNS, owns the record.
Note "With secure dynamic update, only the computers and users you specify
in an ACL can create or modify dnsNode objects within the zone.
By default, the ACL gives Create permission to all members of the
Authenticated User group, the group of all authenticated computers
and users in an Active Directory forest. This means that any
authenticated user or computer can create a new object in the zone.
Also by default, the creator owns the new object and is given full control of it."
Quoted from, and more info on this:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc961412.aspx
    =====================================================
Therefore, based on that, even if you have DHCP set to not register, and the clients are 2008/Vista and newer, then DHCP is doing it. That explains why you see the system account doing it.
Now, I think it will actually help you if you configure DHCP to register everything, configure credentials, and add the DHCP server computer object to the DnsUpdateProxy group. Don't add anything else to this group.
This way DHCP controls everything and it's easier to track AND more importantly, DHCP can update already registered records.
    ====================================================
    In summary:
    DHCP DNS Update summary:
    - Configure DHCP Credentials.
The credentials only need to be a plain-Jane, non-administrator, user account.
But give it a really strong password.
    - Set DHCP to update everything, whether the clients can or cannot.
    - Set the zone for Secure & Unsecure Updates. Do not leave it Unsecure Only.
    - Add the DHCP server(s) computer account to the Active Directory,  Built-In DnsUpdateProxy security group.
Make sure ALL other non-DHCP servers are NOT in the DnsUpdateProxy group.
For example, some folks believe that the DNS servers or other DCs not be
running DHCP should be in it.
They must be removed or it won't work.
Make sure that NO user accounts are in that group, either.
(I hope that's crystal clear - you would be surprised how many
will respond asking if the DHCP credentials should be in this group.)
    - On Windows 2008 R2 or newer, DISABLE Name Protection.
    - If DHCP is co-located on a Windows 2008 R2, Windows 2012, Windows 2012 R2,
or NEWER DC, you can and must secure the DnsUpdateProxy group by running
     the following command:
      dnscmd /config /OpenAclOnProxyUpdates 0
    - Configure Scavenging on ONLY one DNS server. What it scavenges will replicate to others anyway.
    - Set the scavenging NOREFRESH and REFRESH values combined to be equal or greater than the DHCP Lease length.

  • Contents of the applications folder disappeared

    Hi
I would appreciate some help: The contents of the applications and utlities folders (viewable in Finder under Macintosh HD and under by user profile) have deleted themselves for no reason that I can work out. I do have a recent backup which I can use but I am reluctant to do anything without first understanding why this might have happened and I'd appreciate any suggestions that anybody has.
    Full details below:
While using my macbook earlier today, upon clicking on an application in the dock (Mail), nothing happened and instead the icon faded and a question mark appeared. Confused I clicked on the icon below it (iChat) and the same happened.
I opened finder to look at the applications folder and saw all my applications disappearing one by one. At this point, I though the worst and immediately turned of wifi since it looked like somebody was systematically deleting files one by one.
I am now left with a "working" version of Snow Leopard that looks identical to how it did. It is just that absolutely nothing now works (including all system preferences, disk utilites) since the contents of the applications and utilities folders are missing. All icons I click on turn to question marks, except so far finder and java (which seems to be in another folder). Other files seem to be completely intact. Finder does not find them either.
    Results of my own investigation:
    - I am fairly paranoid about computer security and so I doubt this is an attack.
    - It seems most likely to be a virus but I do run a virus checker and the computer and regularly scan the drives which has not indicated any problems. I will need to reinstall antivirus before I can check if there is any sign of a problem.
    - I've checked the disks via Snow Leopard install disk and they show no errors. Given also that the delete seems very selective (applications only) I don't think that this is a disk problem (the laptop is in any case only 9 months old).
    - I definitely did not do anything that would normally delete any programmes - I have seen a few posts about accidentally deleting the applications folder which is not what I have done (unless you think that fiddling with iCal and Mail settings just before this happened could have anything to do with it).
Thanks in advance for your help.

  • J2EE Add In Disappeared from MMC in BI7

    Hi Experts:
I am hoping that one of you have encountered such a case before.
Essentially, we had installed NW2004s Business Intelligence System.
    We first installed ABAP
    Created Client 100
Installed Java Add In for Client 100
After installation everything worked and was green.
However, when I bounced the system all the Java stuff seems to have disappeared.
It is as if that Java was never installed .  MMC is showing all green but there are no Java processes in it.
I can see all the java data, but java is still not loading
I gather that one of the profiles is not correct and as far as that profile is concerned there is no Java.
    OS:  Windows Server

  • Disappearing bookmarks problem is escalating

For over a year people have been reporting that all of their Ipad Safari bookmarks have been disappearing. two fixes were 1. Reboot the iPad. 2. Kill the Safari process. In my new (Christmas 2013) iPad mini, neither of these fixes works. I have been able to re- find most of the lost information, but what should I do in future? Is there a really good alternative browser available that doesn't have this problem?

I guess this is how it was designed ;-(
If you want all the URL's hidden (not exposed on the internet) behind the portal gateway then rewriting is needed. When rewriting is used the URL's are prepended. So bookmarks are with the gateway prepended.
Other portal software solutions, use the revere proxy approach but then all the intranet hostnames need to be known in the internet DNS.
I guess that most people implementing the sun portal eventually will hit this problem. One of the problems is also that before you can use that bookmark, it redirects you first to the desktop again in order to get your session.
What also adds to this, is that the rewriter can cause so additional work in making the rewriting rules work. So you need to test this with every application.
Probably the solution is somewhere in the middle:
-use the portal server to login in the desktop
-if bookmarks and rewriter are an issue then use a reverse proxy aside from the portal. And for SSO you implement a Identity agent on this reverse proxy.

  • Mailman Lists Disappearing

This is a weird one. I just did a fresh install of Tiger Server 10.4 and then ran software update to bring it up to version 10.4.8.
When I enable Mailing Lists using SA, it creates the MailMan default mailing list and the dialog pops up asking to create a list password and to input the administrators email addresses.
Once I click SAVE, the Mailman list appears for about 10 seconds and then just disappears. No emails are sent to admin addresses. If I try to create a test list, the exact same thing happens. I've tried restarting the server and stopping and restarting the service.
I can also get to the mailman web page, but cannot get to the admin page, or create any lists.
Has anyone else seen this and how do you fix it?

Jeeesh - I had the hostname setup in the hostname field and the domain setup in the domain field on the General Tab of the Mail Service.
The hostname MUST be the FQDN, not just the hostname. No other changes were necessary.

  • Hostname duplication #2

    Hello,
the problem has already been addressed (at least) here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2428529
As this problem seems to persist in OS X Mavericks and is a quite serious problem/bug, I want to bump it here again. Actually I have been experiencing this problem since my update to OS X Mavericks.
In short: My desired hostname continiously gets renamed from desiredhostname to desiredhostname-2. Well, mapping the host to a fixed IP seems to be a good idea, but I cannot map two interfaces (Ethernet, Wi-Fi) to the same IP. So I need a fixed hostname. Apart from that, this is basic networking and has to be managed correctly by an operating system (Windows and Linux machines in the same network manage it and no, I don't want to say that one of them is better).
I can definitely rule out that there is another machine in the network with the same hostname. I've scanned the network several times and always only found desiredhostname-2. I've also tried to clear the DHCP IP Table and I don't want to investigate any further. This just has to work out of the box. It seems to me as if at first the Wi-Fi interface registers the hostname and then the Ethernet infterface tries to register the same hostname again. Please don't tell me, that I always have to deactivate one of them. The interfaces are sorted by priority, aren't they?

Hi, same here. It happens several times a week with my mac mini which I also mainly use as a media player/server (running Plex). Usually the hostname changes when the mac mini wakes up. I have a time capsule and airport express in bridge mode (WDS).
One piece of information I might add to this discussion, is that I actually see that the hostname is not 'released' in the network environment when the mini is being shutdown or put asleep: on my macbook, the hostname remains visible in the network overview of the finder. I have enabled file sharing and screen sharing on the mini and sometimes the macbook is connected while I shutdown the mini. When it comes back up, the hostname changes (righteously I suppose) to (n+1) and I can then see both in the network environment. After a couple of restarts (computers and network devices, I haven't been able to pinpoint a single faulty device), the old hostname is finally forgotten.
Is there some expert who can explain why the hostname does not disappear? Where is it retained?
Is there a way to force a 'hard refresh' of the network environment?
The problem is annoying, everyone here will agree. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Downloads disappear from folder

I have downloaded some music and when it has completed the task, the download file disappears. Hasn't done this before, files always remain in download folder.

    Launch Finder.
    Finder > File > Find
When the Finder window opens up, enter the name of the music file in the search box at the top right corner.
It will show up in the Finder under “Name”.
Right click on it and select “Reveal in Finder” from contextual menu.
The resulting Finder window will show the location.

  • On Screen Keyboard Glitch in Tablet Mode - On Screen Keyboard minimizes / disappears / slides down

    Hi there -
New Yoga owner here ( just bought it yesterday) and within minutes of setting the computer up I noticed that the on screen keyboard was malfunctioning when the yoga is in tablet mode. Specifically, it pops up for about a second and then, without me touching or clicking or doing anything, it quickly slides back down. repeated attempts to bring up the keyboard end up, frustratingly, with the same result. what is perplexing to me is the on screen keyboard works fine in laptop mode (when I need it least).
Someone else already started a post on this BUT it was marked as 'solved' (which it wasn't) so I figured I'd start new thread. The solution on the previous thread was to simply 'refresh' windows to get rid of any new drivers that were downloaded since purchasing the yoga, but I did not download or update anything prior to this problem arising (as I said, the problem seemed to occur within a few minutes of turning the machine on for the first time). In any case, I tried the refresh and it did not work so clearly my problem is not that I downloaded an incompatible or faulty driver. Please Help! I love this machine and I'm trying to see past the other flaws I've noticed so far (subtle screen flickering, inconsistent touch sensitivity etc), but this issue is starting to really undermine my confidence in the product quality and, from a productivity standpoint, it is a real deal breaker to not have full tablet functionality.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I had the same problem with the disappearing virtual keyboard within hours of starting to use my new Yoga 13.  I read somewhere that it was a problem with an incompatible Synaptics driver, and when I looked in the control panel, it showed that the Synaptics driver had been updated on my Yoga as of the day I bought it.  I think somehow by agreeing to automatic updates of the software, the Synaptics driver is updated to an incompatible version.   So what I did was I removed the Synaptics driver, using the Windows program uninstaller tool, rebooted, and then found the Synaptics driver at the Lenovo site which is specifically labelled as the Yoga 13 driver.  I installed that, and the keyboard is now working fine.

    Yipee.
    Should have remembered that one.
    Thanks for the help!

Looks like your webkit framwork is broken, or is now broken in relation to iTunes. Calls and classes may have changed since version 7.1, which is what you are using. Try updating to the latest version of iTunes and see if this fixes it.
