How can i disble ports in Solaris 10.

Hi,
I am new to Solaris. I have done a new installation of the 10 on a sparc and it went well. I need to block all the unwanted ports, for this i have edited the /etc/services. After a rebooted, i don't see any effect, i can see the ports are still listening.
Any help is appreciated.
Tx.

Commenting out lines in /etc/services isn't the way to go about disabling services.
You need to find out what is actually the controlling application/server utilizing that port and disable it.
To see what parts are currently available use netstat -a -f inet. If that doesn't give you enough information install lsof and use its output to identify what application is utilizing what port. Once you identify the application you can disable it with svcadm.
For example: If you see port 25/tcp as available, netstat will report that as smtp and lsof will identify it as sendmail. You can then disable it with svcadm disable sendmail . Now if you do a netstat -a -f inet you won't see port 25/tcp listening any more.

  • How can I open ports on my AirPort Extreme, from WINDOWS?

I have an Airport Extreme as my router, and I have a Windows-based computer. I need to open ports on the router (ironically, it is for my Apple TV).
However, even though I can use the Airport Utility for Windows (latest version 5.5.3), I cannot open ports from the application.
Everywhere I look, I am supposed to have a firewall tab in the Advanced section, but I do not have it. The only tabs that I have in Advanced are:

  • How can i change port No 1521 after installation

    Dear all;
I have finished installing oracle database 10g, infrastructure 10g and BI 10g in one machine ,but after installation i found that the infrastructure use the same port 1521 of the database, and as a result the application server services not working like Forms, OC4j_bi_forms and report , so, how can change the port number after installation and how can i pass this problem during the installation??
    Thanks

    dear Mr.
actually after i installed the db10g and developer 10g and when I start the installation of the infrastructure I get the following message (that telling me that the port 1521 on my host is used by another product and if this port is being used by Oracle Network Service listener version 9.0.1 or higher, may I elect to continue the installation) , so I decide to continue the installation but after that I noticed that not all the oracle application server service not started and when I start forms as example may be the OC_4j_bi get down, and so on… and when I discuss this issue with another DBA he told me that this problem because of the using of the same port.
Finally i would like to solve this problem by any case even if i re-install the S/W again, but i'm afarid that i face the same problems.
    Thanks

There is a way to do that in both Pages and Numbers in Snow Leopard; I don;t have Lion available to see if that was carried forward to it.
In SL, with the document open click the Inspector button in the toolbar for  the document. In the Inspector window, click the leftmost icon in its toolbar ("document inspector" in the popup tooltip), If a Pages document, also then click the Document button below that icon.
Then, at the bottom of the window look for an item "Require password to open" - checkmark that, and you'll be prompted to set a password.

If not allowed from the portal, does configuring the ports via iptables command opens these ports for me?
Sorry I'm new to Cloud and got confused about private/public IPS

    Hi Yaseer;
IP TABLES do not open with endpoints. You will have to configure endpoints first. Check out this

  • How can I setup port forwarding for RDP (3389) using MHS291LVW?

    Hi,
I went into my MHS291LVW and I enabled port forwarding.  I didn't see an option for Remote Desktop (RDP) so I added a custom application called RDP and I set "Global Port" and "Private Port" to port number 3389 and I set it as TCP/UDP and then entered the local IP (192.168.1.135) of the PC I want to connect to.  I made my local PC use a static IP so this 192.168.1.135 will never change.
Then when I go under "About Jetpack" I see that there is a WAN IP address listed; so I wrote this down and then I tried to connect remotely to this PC from outside the Verizon Jetpack network but it didn't work.
Then the strange thing is when I go to Google and type "what's my IP", Google shows me a different external WAN IP address that Verizon Jetpack showed me in the admin web interface.  Anyway, I tried this WAN IP address that Google gave me but it still didn't connect to my local PC.
Can someone please help me in figuring out why this is not working?
I've setup port forwarding on plenty of other routers (Linksys, Netgear, etc.), but I never tried it on a Verizon Jetpack MHS291LVW but it should work the same so I'm not sure why this is not working for me.
    Thank you!

    > If I can't use the "Microsoft Windows RDP" service because of the private IP; would I be able to use a software like "TeamViewer" to gain access to my PC?
Yes.  This is how a VPN server works around the private IP address restrictions of the VZW network.  It will work and you will be able to access anything that is centrally connected to a VPN server.
    > Also, if I were to take the VPN option and setup a VPN server on the PC
Not on the remote PC silly guy.  Hosting a VPN from within the VZW network wont do you any good as its IP will be masked by the NAT firewall.  You must setup a VPN server off of the VZW network for it to work.  That way when you remote into the VPN server it is already outside of the VZW NAT that is restricting you in the first place.  There are many VPN vendors that you can test out and pay access for if you don't have any interest in setting up one on your own.  Some are free where others charge more money for more bandwidth and customization features.
    > If I were to try to connect to this PC on the JetPack side from an external PC on a different network I don't know how I would be able to access it since the JetPack IP address is private.
The idea is that everything rests on the VPN server when remote connections are made.  The Jetpack PC, VPN Server and your current local PC all connect to the VPN server so everything is then local communication.  The VPN will make it appear as though everything is virtually connected to the same appliance even though they are physically separated by whatever distance you want.

  • How to block outbound port in Solaris 10

    Hello,
I would like to block OUTBOUND telnets (port 23) - Let me repeat it's OUTBOUND (not inbound).
I need to do it on Server level (not Firewall level).
Any help would highly be appreciated.
    TIA

Yes, you need to use ipfilter.
You can filter either inbound or outbound.
There's information in docs.sun.com on how to use svcadm to turn it on and there's an ipfilter mailing list to help you figure out how to use it.

  • How can I update to latest Solaris NTP 4  package?

I am facing difficult challenge on this.
There is a requirement to run the NTP version 4, I Understand the package involved is SUNWntp4S. But in all the patch bundles installed we have not been able to upgrade the current version, i.e V3
Tried to see if we can get a application to serve the version 4 protocol but there is a concern on how to implement the free version on a procudtion system.
Are there any other methods that you can suggest.
    Thanks in advance.

You may want to review the patch cluster strategy document on OTN:
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/articles/servers-storage-admin/solaris-patching-strategy-257476.pdf
The main information to be aware of is mentioned on page 10:
Because the Oracle Solaris Update Patch Bundles don't contain new packages introduced in an
Oracle Solaris Update Release, new functionality that depends upon such new packages is not
available in the Oracle Solaris Update Patch Bundles.
This means that you must upgrade your system to get the new NTP4 functionality. Patches can only be applied to existing packages. New packages must be installed by an upgrade (LiveUpgrade is recommended).

  • How can I manage ports from terminal?

I'm trying to troubleshoot some issues i've been having using ssh with my two laptops. I'm getting a port 22 error and I would like to establish a customized setting that doesn't involve opening up these popular ports like 22. I'm trying to diagonse these problems every way I can but if I new how to manage this from the command line it would make things so easier. I would like to know how to open, close, view status, etc. of ports. Can anyone help?

There aren't any utilities to directly control ports because ports are a logical construct, they don't really exist.  There are programming constructs to control ports, which are used inside programs to associate a server to a port and register that association with the OS.
For most programs, there are configuration files that can be edited to change various program parameters, including to what port the server listens.
SSH has configuration files for both the server and the client, at both the system and user profile levels.
You'd be better off giving more detail about what issues you are having.  You might also (or additionally) try running your SSH commands with the -v, -vv, -vvv or -vvvv switches, which will cause increasing levels of verbosity to be printed to stdout...which can be very useful for troubleshooting.

  • How can I switch languages in Solaris 9.0

    Hi,
I need help with switching different language user interfaces for Solaris 9. I would like to login as a Chinese user and have Chinese interface, input supoort etc and after that I would like to switch to another language interface if possible.
Rather than installing one locale setting in the beginning, is it possible to switch between languages like using Multi-user interface?
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi Niel,
You can use the method you specified.
In Bex Analyzer you have design mode where you can have the following items Button, Analysis Grid and Combo box.
To work with the button you need to use the Command Wizard which consists of pre-defined functions, out of those select the one which suits your requirement and supply the parameters. As it is done thorugh a Wizard it would be easy to do.
    Also,
The Button Name displays the name of the button, which is generated automatically and is unique. This name is used on the BEx Analyzer Design Toolbar menu to refer to a particular instance of the button.
    · Range u2013 Manipulate coordinates for a cell or cells in this field to move or resize the button.
    · Button Text - The text (caption) you want to display on the button. You can use this to describe the command the button executes.
    · Command Range (optional) - Specify a three-column range of cells in the worksheet that contains command parameters. In these cells, you provide the same parameters (Name, Index, and Value) as in the Static Parameters, but in the worksheet these can be variable, changing during
navigation based on query results or on a value you manually specify.

  • How can I open port 80

I am using a 2wire modem/router. I was told by a tech at ATT that I can only click a button that allows ALL ports open, but not just port 80.
Does anyone know if there is a way to open port 80 ONLY? I'm next to done setting up a security CCTV system for my home, and this would allow me to use my computer to look at whats going on, rather than buying a new monitor.
    Thanks for helping.

Thanks for the reply. You and X423424X are close. From the beginning. I bought a 4 camera DVR security surveillance system. Yesterday, we installed it. I was told by the place from which I bought it ( and subsequently from the manufacturer's tech guy)  that if I wanted to use my computer for a monitor for the security setup, that in the Router Firewall Settings I would have to identify the device, and then 'direct' the device "through" port 80 to be able to view the 'goings on outside' (the input from the cameras) from my computer monitor. Inclusive with this configuration via the iMac, is that the DVR is recording all the time, and I could download any portion of the recorded material from the DVR to the iMac and burn it to a disk, for example to give to the cops if there was a theft. AND, it was also mentioned that in order to remote view whats going on around the place from say, a laptop or pc when I'm out of town can also be done, but that would require opening another port, with 4 digits, like 3806, or similar. I will eventually get the port number for this operation later. So that is what I'm trying to do.
So far, the 'local tech' from the security store seems to have limited knowledge of the Mac, and of the 2Wire router/modem. So HE was on the phone with first the tech support from the security cam/DVR dealers, and then with an ATT tech. The ATT tech was the one that said, in the firewall settings on the modem, there is a button that opens ALL ports, and that was the only way to allow port 80 to be used for the DVR/security setup.
I think that he is incorrect. I think that there is a way to view the camera images on my Mac monitor, and that there is a way to configure the settings on the router to allow the camera images to  be seen on the computer screen, and that I could also download to the HD on the iMac any 3 or 4 minute portion of what is recorded on the DVR, in order to burn a copy. I have a co-worker that had a car taken, and her neighbor was there in an instant telling her thatt he had the whole thing on his video surveillance, and had a disc burnt in about 5 minutes, which went to the police. Her car was found, and the perp arrested within 2 hours.
THATS what I want to end up with (no, not a stolen car, but the configuration), and I'm hoping that I can find the way to get 'er done here. There is only one good Apple/OS X tech in this town, and he is on vacation for another week. AND, I'm not sure he is a 2wire expert.
So, again, thank you for any help or input.
