How can I _really_ disable ACPI?

One morning I found my MacBook frozen and with fans spinning noisy. It refused to boot anymore, even off the install DVD. I started in target disk mode and checked the disk, which was fine. The Apple Hardware Test also ran without complaints, although I've already been supposing a grilled CPU.
However a Knoppix Live DVD surprisingly started with the noacpi flag enabled. Linux loaded and ran perfectly. Since then I've been trying to achieve the same result with XNU boot flags but without success.
The current situation is:
- I moved all but the essential kexts out of the Extensions folder, keeping only these:
AppleAPIC.kext
AppleFileSystemDriver.kext
AppleRTC.kext
AppleSMBIOS.kext
IOACPIFamily.kext
IOATAFamily.kext
IOHIDFamily.kext
IOPCIFamily.kext
IOSCSIArchitectureModelFamily.kext
IOStorageFamily.kext
IOUSBFamily.kext
IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext
System.kext
- com.apple.Boot.plist contains these flags: -v cpus=1 acpi=off
and the kernel hangs early on load with the last couple of messages being:
ACPI: System State [ ...
mbinit: done ...
rooting via boot-uuid from /chosen: ...
Waiting on <dict ID="0"><key>IOProviderClass ...
- when I omit either the cpus or the acpi flag, the kernel stops loading after the ACPI line and sometimes I get a kernel panic stating (among many lines of text): processor registers corrupt
So, my questions are:
1. Which parameters and/or kexts should I pass to the XNU kernel in order to achieve the same behaviour like Linux - loading with ACPI disabled (or loading at all)?
2. How could I track down the problem?
3. If the thermal sensor or something else on the CPU (Intel Core 2 Duo) is being burned out, is there a tool to test this, i.e. can I tell that there will be no data corruption when I install and use Linux on the MacBook?
Thanks in advance!

It is funny that the XNU kernel loads it extensions based on a mysterious logic that nobody knows of or can control ... it has a touch of black magic
There is no mysterious logic about it. The process is well explained in the previously mentioned System Startup Programming Topic & related links, expecially I/O Kit Fundamentals: Introduction to I/O Kit Fundamentals.
What is mysterious is your explanation about what will or won't prevent the kernel & extensions to it from loading, which makes no sense in light of the material in these references. And while instances of needing to disconnect the HD to get a system to boot from another source are quite possible, there is no reason to think that "a really really bad directory" is the cause, whatever that mysterious phrase is supposed to mean.
Think about it: a directory is a feature of a file system. At boot time, no method of accessing any file system exists in the computer. The bootROM (which is in firmware) starts the process by first doing POST, which initializes some of the hardware, & then selects the operating system to run. If there is a partition on some device previously set for that in PRAM (for instance, by using the Startup Disk System Preference), it will choose that one unless one of two exceptions occur: 1) the user overrides that by invoking the Startup Manager (also in firmware) or 2) the chosen device isn't available for some reason, in which case the firmware starts looking for the first available device with a boot loader. In either of these two exceptions, it is certainly possible that a bad boot loader from the device would halt the boot process, but if the user takes control of the choice by evoking the Startup Manager, unless there is a hardware problem in the computer itself, this is a non-issue, assuming a viable boot loader is chosen.
Only after the boot loader loads the kernel environment from the device (which for OS X among other things means building the I/O device tree) can that kernel provide the low level services necessary to access the file systems it supports.
If you want to take control of the boot process, you can -- but you must be familiar with all of the requirements involved, including those mentioned in the previously mentioned references, the EFI boot process, & so on. But in no case will this exempt you from the problems "buggy" hardware will cause. There is nothing whatsoever mysterious about that.

  • How can I permanently disable the "fn" key?

    Hi.  My subject says it all.  How can I permanently disable the "fn" key?
    At first I thought I had a virus or something because when I typed only weird symbols came out.  Then I reset the computer.  Then I couldn't even log in.  I tried Time Machine etc.
    Then I realized that the "fn" key wasn't working right.  It seems to be working backwards.  It acts like it's being pushed when it's not, and when I do push it it acts like it's not being used.
    So it's kind of a simple problem but it's really annoying.
    Is there a way I can just disable it permanently?  Even physical force if necessary.  I tried to break it but it wouldn't break.  I don't really use the key anyway so it doesn't really matter.  I don't want to pay a bunch of money to replace a key I don't even use.
    Thanks.  I hope someone knows.

    That's the best answer.  Yeah usually if you press "fn" or "option" you can get it to work for awhile.
    Yeah I have considered some kind of external keyboard also.  It will make a laptop less laptopish.  But it could do the job for awhile.
    It's sad because I don't even care about the "fn" or "option" keys.
    But anyway it's not catastrophic at least.
    And yeah maybe we can get a new computer later or something.  I like mine though.  It's customized and is how I like it right now.
    Anyway thanks for the reply.

    When I log into my Yahoo e-mail I get the following message:If you are using a screen reader and having problems using Mail, it might help to disable automatic page updates. Please note, this will also disable chat and text messaging within Yahoo! Mail. You can toggle automatic updates on and off using the link below. (Disable automatic page updates.) How can I permanently disable this in Firefox. I don't have these issues with IE8.

    I have this same problem and it occurs with other websites (like ESPN.com) too. Only I don't get the option of disabling automatic page updates on other websites. I disabled and reinstalled Mozilla and it went away for a short while. About two weeks later the same problem popped back up.

  • How can I permanent disable Game Center?!

    Okay, I'm on iOS 6, every time I play game (i.e. slots journey) the Game Center kept on pop up for me to log in. I cancel it and start play the game. How can I permanent DISABLE the Game Center?! This annoy me. I don't like when the Game Center automatically login. How in the world did it automatically login without it even ask for me to enter?! I want it OFF AND DISABLED PERMANENTLY!!!! :(

    I agree. I wish I could just remove this utterly useless app. I wouldn't have upgraded to ios6 I'd I knew that this update would be the most annoying thing to happen to iPhones since Angry Birds. One of the few things that helps me cope with the constant meltdown that is human society are my iPhone games. Now, I can't log into a single one without being nagged to log into Game Center. Guess what Apple? I'm not using your piece of crap app. Its bad enough that the App Store barely functions, but now you want to force users to use this crappy app that the vast majority of us don't use, don't want, and have no purpose for. If I wanted to have meaningless competitions with the boneheads who insist on calling themselves my "friends", I'd grab a measuring stick and drop my pants with them.
    Nagging users to death doesn't make them any more excited about a stupid, worthless app that was made for the sake of appearing "cutting edge".

    It appears windows hacker has locked my hard drive as readonly how can this be disabled?

    Sorry about the delay; I have called Apple Care sr advisors and spent 3 over 200 hrs explaining the problems to which they always recommend I exchange the Mac with a new one. This is my 5th Mac mini in less than 2 months. Many of the problems are not directly related to windows issues however (in my uneducated opinion should not be happening)Here are the unexplained issues:
    1. The sr advisors have been remotely connected to the machine and each one said I was setup on a server;
    2. My uid has been replaced with a windows uid (s-18-0-0-1 or sim);
    3. All the root certificates seem to be either fraudulent or modified to allow access to root account from remote locations;
    4. Apache server is active;
    5. WebDAV is configured as well as SQL services;
    6. Every newly exchanged Mac mini has iLife uninstalled prior to any updates being installed;
    7. Mac updates have warning messages indicating they are not signed properly, "contact software manufacture for more information", apple has no answer to this;
    8. Although I have never claimed (nor do I ever want to be computer program literate), I have been plagued by the same issues on Windows PC, Linux and now OS X. My main purpose for needing a secure computer is to write a resume and find employment. In 3 years I have been unable to do either. My data is always Either locked after as read only or is accessible on a URL only.
    9. I know this one will only classify me as an insane maniac but It appears as though I am connected to the Internet via an ipv6 udp connection even though my ISP doesn't support ip6 and all GUIs indicate all connections are inactive. This is typical no matter geographical location ie:Denver, San Deigo, Seattle, Boise et al)

  • How can we make disable a Field of a FORM at run-time?

    Hi to everybody,
    I want to know that how can we make a filed DISABLE at runtime <whenever we run a FORM>.
    I know about SET-ITEM-INSTANCE-PROPERTY but don't know how to use it,
    please make it clear.
    I will be gratefull to all of you
    Thanking you in advance.

    There's no property values for enabled or disabled in SET_ITEM_INSTANCE_PROPERTY.
    Instead what you can do is set INSERT_ALLOWED, UPDATE_ALLOWED and NAVIGABLE to FALSE which basically what a disabled item behaves like.

  • How can I TEMPORARILY disable built-in microphone?

    I like to record music from the web on my Touchsmart 310-1145UK (BTW this is 3 months old but HP don't recognise this model number so I can't contact customer support on-line!!!  It is a 20 inch screen all-in-one PC).
    I use Audacity to record, this worked fine EXCEPT that it also recorded all the noise that the built-in microphone picked up.
    I found a way of disabling it, but this turned out to be permanent and there was no way of getting it back apart from a system restore.
    How can I stop the micrphone, or turn it down so it doesn't work, and then easily turn it back on again?

    Here is a link to your notebook's support portal.  That is indeed a recognized HP product name. I searched the HP server for the link.
    In the systray, right-click on the volume icon. Select Recording devices.  Right-click on the microphone icone and select  Disable and select OK To enable the microphone, just go back into the very same Windows that you disabled it in.
    You can also access the sound Window by typing sound in the start search box. Select sound and then select the Recording tab.

  • [SOLVED] How can I permanently disable NMI watchdog?

    Hi everyone, I want to disable nmi_watchdog on my machine with Arch Linux x64.
    I tried to disable it adding "nmi_watchdod=0" in kernel boot parameter from etc/default/grub.
    But, it re-enables during boot, as I can see from journalctl log:
    kernel: NMI watchdog: enabled on all CPUs, permanently consumes one hw-PMU counter.
    I have also this problem before:
    systemd-tmpfiles[154]: chmod(/proc/sys/kernel/nmi_watchdog) failed: Operation not permitted
    but don't know what it means.
    However, it seems that something (maybe systemd) re-enables nmi_watchdog, even if I disable it from kernel parameter!
    I can disable it manually after boot with:
    echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/nmi_watchdog
    but I want an automatic thing for that, I can't do it manually everytime start Arch.
    Which thing does re-enable nmi_watchdog? And how can I prevent this behavior?
    Please help, thanks.

    There's something that enables it. There's always kernel: NMI watchdog: enabled on all CPUs, permanently consumes one hw-PMU counter in journalctl log.
    I use pm-utils, laptop_mode.service and cpupower for trying to save energy on my laptop.
    Could be one of them?

  • How can I permanently disable Color Correction & Premultiplying of Alphas?

    How can I disable these destructive and needless features in Quartz Composer's (using an image splitter to combine it with automator, so that little checkbox is not there) & Preview? I cannot have these features with the images I'm manipulating, and thus they only ever get in the way.
    And yes, degrading the quality of an image does make it smaller. Much like chopping off bits of a person to make him/her smaller.

    I'm trying to do the same...no problem choosing the color, but when I used an advanced rule, I no longer have the option in a drop down menu to "erase junk mail". Seems like any combination of an advanced junk mail rule wipes out the option to erase junk mail, and I don't want mail to automatically delete my junk email. I tried outting a stop evaluating after the text color, but that didn't work.

  • How can I *permanently* disable caches?

    I've turned on the Develop menu and selected 'Disable Caches'. However, this option does not 'stick', as after a few subsequent minutes of surfing, the option will turn itself off and re-enable caches on its own. How can I stop Safari from doing that?
    I have tried the old trick for disabling caches (i.e. deleting the cache folders and using the 'touch' command to create empty files with the same names as those folders), but this will cause Safari to crash when the 'Warn when visiting fraudulent websites' option is turned on. So that's out.

    From the Finder type shift-command-G or Go->Go to folder...
    /var/folders/IZ is the path. Within the IZ folder you will see another folder with a very long, random character name. Open that folder and you will a folder named -Caches-. Within the -Caches- folder you find the folder com.apple.Safari. Inside the com.apple.Safari folder are the files Cache.db and SafeBrowsing.db. These are Safari's actual caches in Leopard. This is also the reason some people are having trouble with Safari 3.2. If they have disabled Safari's cache using the terminal or a utility like Onyx, Cocktail, or any of the other Safari utilities that disable the cache then Safari 3.2 can't access the SafeBrowsing.db and apparently crashes. This is also why turning off the fraudulent website preference causes some user's Safari to start working again. And of course, a whole lot of people were obsessed with speeding up Safari and took bad advice to disable the cache, then promptly forgot they did so. Then when Safari 3.2 blew up in their faces they had no clue. Combine that with all the third-party add-ons and, well, you get the picture.
    Trashing the Cache.db and the SafeBrowsing.db files may also be a good troubleshooting tool. But remember, we're talking Leopard only, not Tiger.

    Saw this solution on another post about an iPad in a school environment. Might work on your iPad so you won't lose everything.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    ‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
    Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
    I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
    Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just cancelling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
    If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.
