How do I avoid itunes organizing my songs in subfolders?

I would like to have all of my music filed according to artist MINUS the subfolders for each album. Any idea how I can override the format that itunes uses?

You can change the settings in the iTunes Edit menu > Preferences > Advanced tab > General sub-tab by unchecking Keep iTunes Music folder organized and then set up your own folder structure but are you sure this is what you really want to do?
There is a greater chance of you (and iTunes) losing track of your music this way, causing confusion sometime in the future.
Most of us allow iTunes to have its way with the folder structure and then access the music in a variety of ways within iTunes.
In your example, you would open the Browse display (iTunes View menu > Show Browser), select an Artist and then click on the Name column to sort all the entries for them without reference to the Albums they're from.

You just import them to iTunes, or you import them to iTunes directly from the CD. But, it you had imported them to the computer before you had iTunes, then you go to edit, add file to library, or add folder to library, however you have the music set up.

I'm not sure I understand but are you sayng these music files did not import into Itunes? If they are on your comuter and in the format iTunes excepts just drag and drop them into itunes
    These are the current formats
iTunes 11 can currently read, write and convert between MP3, AIFF, WAV, MPEG-4, AAC and Apple Lossless (.m4a)
If they are FLAC based music you will need to convert them with a 3rd party piece of software to Apple Lossless or mp3
The windows version also handles  transcoding WMA files to other formats but will not natively play them

  • How do I get itunes to locate songs?

I just transferred my itunes file from an old PC to a new one.  When I select a song on itunes on the new PC it cannot locate the file.  How do I get itunes to locate all of my songs so they will play?

    Hey jherron12,
To locate files is going to be one at a time; the easiest way to do this is to do it in one of two ways. To import music that is already on the new computer, follow the below article to get that media in iTunes. You will probably want to delete what is in iTunes to prevent double files. When you delete the files it will ask to keep the files or move to the Recycle Bin, choose the keep the files.

The other way is to start the transfer again, and follow the steps in the this article to move files.

  • How do i get Itunes to sync songs/apps that are "unauthorized"?

I forgot my passcode then had to reset my iPod touch, this was successful. Then in the syncing process some of the songs and apps were not syncing because they weren't "authorized". I hadn't purchased these items on my iPod. The window that had showed up said to go to store and then authorize computer. I did this, and the same window popped up and again, and again. How do i get itunes to sync these songs/apps that are un "authorized"?

The problem here is that iTunes wants to make sure that the songs that were purchased are sent to the same device that purchased them.  In this case, you would need to authorize your computer first.   This is as easy as opening iTunes, find "store" in the upper status bar, and select Authorize This Computer.   A dialogue will pop up asking for your iTunes ID and your password.  Enter the ID you purchased the songs with.  Afterwords, you should be able to sync the songs.

Ok, I just tried Louie, Louie got over 50 hits including what I believe is the original version by "The Kingsmen." Got 2 hits for the Lonnie Mack song. Got 3 hits for the Buffalo Springfield song. No hits for Leslie Pearl, but 3 hits for what appears to be that song, but not Pearl's version. Nothing for Steve dahl. There were several hits for the Standells, but not the song you are looking for. One hit for the Royal Teens song. A few hits for Lulu, but not that song. I believe this is the correct Wilson Pickett song but it is listed in the store as "Get me back on Time, Enine No. 9". Nothing for the 2 songs by 10cc. 2 hits for the Chambers Bros. song. I did this by simply using the "search" function in the upper right.
Sorry I couldn't get back with you until today, but I had a thunderstorm last night, had to shut down, & then it was time for bed.

  • How do I stop Itunes from adding songs to my library?

Is there anyway to make Itunes not automatically add songs to my library upon retrieving them?  The second I download a song onto my computer, Itunes automatically adds it to the library.  Is there a way to turn this off, or a place I can download to that Itunes can't access?

    Soulgazer,
If you are downloading from the iTunes Store, the song will always go to your iTunes library.
If you are downloading from another website, the behavior is controlled by a setting in your browser.  For example, if you use Firefox, go to Options > Applications and make sure that the MP3s are set for "Always Ask."  By doing this, the songs will be downloaded to your computer, but no action will be taked until you do something manually.

  • How do i avoid loosing my 250 songs music data from my iphone4 if i want to sync it another itunes library?

Please help me to fins a solution to this. Thankyou.

    Things to think about:
If you have purchased music from Apple, Apple knows you have purchased the right to listen to it.
Media companies are worried about electronic media and how easy it is to copy from one device to another -- friends "sharing" their music with each other.
It's only recently Apple was able to remove copy protection from media at all.
I will let you figure out how all this works in the grand scheme of how a theoretical company (since we are not allowed to speculate here) that sells media and has to work with media companies might also have to incorporate certain features into how their media players function as regards to copying files on and off the devices.

  • How to create new iTunes library from songs on external drive

I've seen numerous questions about moving an iTunes library TO an external library, but I want to do the reverse. I have a brand new iTunes program on my (brand new) Mac, and I have a large song collection (140 gigs) on an external drive. How do I put the song names into my Mac iTunes library without actually downloading the songs to the computer? I don't want to clog up the Mac with 14000 songs, I'd rather just have it access the drive to play the tunes.
    Thanks in advance,
    Ron

    Hi Ron,
A couple ways to go about it. One is to simply go into iTunes preferences and under the Advanced tab DE-select (un check) the "Copy Files to iTunes Music folder when adding to Library" option. Now when you add your external drive tracks they will remain where they are and are just added to the library listing and will be played from the external location.
Keep in mind that this will happen to ALL songs you add to your library. So if you add one from your download folder and another from a server, etc. they will not be copied in and accessed from that location. If you like, you can always uncheck that, add your 140GB of external tracks, then when it is done, reselect that option so all other things added to your iTunes get copied into the iTunes Folder on your internal drive.
Are the tracks on the external drive arranged in any sort of special organization you want to keep? Or would you be willing to resort them a bit and let iTunes manage the organization? If you are will to let iTunes do the managing, you can set it up so everything goes onto the external and all your existing tracks will get organized by iTunes.

  • How do I move iTunes and all songs to new computer without loosing ratings?

I recently purchased a new computer and have been trying to migrate everything to it. I downloaded Itunes to my new computer and moved all music on to the new computer. While I have successfully set up iTunes on the new computer (including setting the proper iTunes Music folder location under Edit/Preferences/Advanced/General), I cannot find a way to import ALL (Over 60 gig) of music into iTunes. The best I have been able to figure out is to add each individual folder from an artist to the library (this would be a HUGE amount of time!) and in so doing I would loose ALL the time I have spent rating songs (very important to me for My Top Rated). Is there a way to import all music on a specific drive into iTunes AND keep the preferences from the prior computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

  • How to merge 2 iTunes libraries with song rating intact?

My wife and I have separate iTunes libraries, and we need to merge them together on a PC.  We rate songs on our own, and want to retain the ratings and album image while merging it.  Does anyone know of a webpage that has a step by step guide to do this?  Thanks

Turn on enable home sharing in both iTunes accounts, and then you should be able to get both libraries onto one phone. This is assuming that both libraries are on the same computer. The link describes how it works on a Mac. This link seems to explain how to do it on Mac or PC.

  • How do I keep iTunes from copying songs from iCloud to playlist?

Why is iTunes copying songs from iCloud to playlist when I already have the songs on my computer? This is obvously redundant and just duplicates songs I already have. How do I just drag over songs from my Library to my playlist without copying them from ICloud??

  • How do I get itunes to sort songs the same way my ipod does, without renaming the songs?

Itunes and my ipod use different algorithms when sorting songs.  Here are a few examples:
In itunes, apostrophes come before spaces/other characters  ("It's Good to Be King" comes before "It Keeps You Runnin'" and "You're an Original" comes before "You Better You Bet."  In my ipod, apostrophes come after spaces/other characters.
In itunes, numerical song titles are sorted by the first number, then the second, and so on (18, 1983, 2112, 25, 3).  In my ipod, numerical song titles are sorted in ascending numerical order (3, 18, 25, 1983, 2112).
The order is relevant for two reasons.  One, I like the sound of the song flow generated by my ipod's sorting better than the one generated by itunes.  Two, I use play count to determine whether or not to keep a song on my playlist (songs that I skip over repeatedly get cut entirely) and the changing song order tends to mess up the play count.
So, other than going in and changing the names of the songs, is there some way to make itunes behave like my ipod?

I deal with the numeric ordering by padding out the sort fields with leading zeros. iTunes used to sort numbers by value but it seems the code for that got removed at some point and hasn't been replaced. You should be able to use sort values to achieve some consistency between the two views of your media.

  • How do I get iTunes to 'forget' songs which were on a harddrive which is no longer connected?

I had an external hardrive connected to my computer which I stored my music on. It suffered a head crash and is no longer available, but iTunes insists on listing all the songs and will only give me an error message if I try to play one of them.
I just want to tell iTunes to check all the songs listed and delete from the list those not available. Shouldn't be too complicated, but I can't find any way of doing it.

One way to identify the broken links in your library is to create this set of playlists:
    Lost & Found playlists
Create a playlist called Found, select everything in Music and drag it into the Found playlist. Create a smart playlist called Lost matching All the rules Playlist is Music and Playlist is not Found. Your lost tracks will be in this playlist. Use CTRL+A to select them all and SHIFT+DELETE to delete them.
Or use iTunes Folder Watch and enable its option to check for dead tracks on startup.
