How do I block a network account in 10.6.8?

TL;DR - I have a local account with the same credentials as a network account. The network account logs in, but doesn't work the way I want. How can I get the login window to not ask me to pick between the two and default to the local account? Not allowing network logins under "Accounts" doesn't work.
I have about 15 iMacs running 10.6.8 that I am having an issue with. I am in a middle school and we're going to begin testing students soon. Our plan is to have a unique user account that students login to that will automatically launch the test in order to minimize potential problems. All of these computers are part of our Windows domain to manage printing, and the account we're using is a network account. I've set up 120 other computers without an issue - they login with the network account, hold all the settings and perform exactly as expected. The exception being three machines that for whatever reason refuse to login to the network account, though everything is identical to working machines. As a workaround, I created a local user with the exact same username and password. The idea is that staff won't have two sets of credentials when they want to start the test.
These 15 computers do not hold any settings for the network account. I've modified the dock, changed settings, and every time I log out it's all lost. I log back in, expecting to see my changes, and it's as if it's creating a new default account each time. So as a workaround, I created the local user with the same username and password as in the cases above. Now when I attempt to login, the login window shows me two options - the network account, and the local account. I've disabled logging in with a network account and it doesn't make a difference. I'm assuming that this is happening because the network account did/does successfully login, even if it's not holding settings, while the machines that never did login don't have this problem, thus no screen asking me to pick between logins.
This is going to confuse my users and cause problems that I may not be available to address within an approriate timeframe. Once a network account has successfully logged in, is there any way prevent it from trying to login again, defaulting to the local account instead? I know OS X is supposed to check against local users first, but I've never seen it ask me to pick between local and network like this before. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi Rob,
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • I am trying to figure out how to merge my AD network account.

I am trying to figure out how to merge my AD network account with my Mac account. The main reason for this is wanting to log into my admin account on the Mac, and have it also log into my network account so I do not have to log into differing accounts depending on wether I am on the network or not. And I am going to be running VMware fusion with windows on top, so having one account would be essential to this.
    Thanks.
P.S. I am brand new to Apple, not by choice. ;-)

Basically I want to link a network account to a local account, so that I always log into the same account, even if I do not have network access....

  • How do I make a network account a local admin?

I'm using Admitmac to get on a windows domain and every time I try to change the current logged in network account to be an admin the setting never stays, just reverts back to a network account. What do I need to do?

In ADmitMac v3.2.2, there is a configuration setting to allow a user or group of users local administrator privileges.
    Please follow these steps:
    - Open Directory Access (/Applications/Utilities/) and unlock if necessary
    - Double-click ADmitMac
    - Double-click the domain name
    - Click the Admin tab
    - Check the "Map admin group to:" checkbox, and click "Browse..."
    - In the "Name" field, enter part of a group name or a domain user's account name, and click "Find"
For example, "Domain Users", "Domain Admins", or "[email protected]"
    - From the given list, select the desired name and click "Add"
    - Click "Done", quit Directory Access, and Log Out
    To verify this setting:
    - Log in with a domain account
    - Open System Preferences and click the Accounts pane
    - The account listed under "My Account" will be the domain account
    - The item "Allow user to administer this computer" should be checked
NOTE: In Mac OS X v10.3.x, this option is under the "Security" tab.

  • How do I convert a network account to a local account

Well, the subject explains everything, how do I do that ??

Copy the home folder items to a new folder using the same shortname as the intended local user, create a new account with the same shortname as the folder and then naviagte to system prefs (must be administrator) and click on Users and Groups and ctrl click on the new user account and point to the new home folder i.e.
    Then fix home user permissions
1.Restart Mountain Lion and hold down the Command and R keys.
2.You will boot into the Repair Utilities screen. On top, in the Menu Bar click the Utilities item then select Terminal.
3.In the Terminal window, type resetpassword and hit Return.
4.The Password reset utility launches, but you’re not going to reset the password. Instead, click on the icon for your Mac’s hard drive at the top. From the drop-down below it, select the user account where you are having issues.
5.At the bottom of the window, you’ll see an area labeled ‘Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs’. Click the Reset button there.

  • FB60, How to exclude a G/L account from being selected ?

This is a continuation of a previous thread that was closed by accident!!
The original question hasnu2019t been answered yet.
    Question
    =======
I am in need to EXCLUDE a specific G/L account from being selected, from the drop down list, when executing FB60 (Enter Vendor Invoice) to create a new vendor invoice ?
    1) Is this doable ?
    2) Could this be done programmatically (ABAP team) ?
    3) Could this be done at Security Role level (Basis & Security ABAP team)  by using the field BRGRU of the F_BKPF_BES Authorization Object ?
I have received so far very useful remarks from Paul01, Mauri, SAPFICO, Mohammed Zia, and Sudhaker Gogula.
    THANK YOU ALL!
Here are my answers to each one:
    To Mauri:
    ========
YES, we define the authorization Group via FS00 --> Control data, which means the relevant authorization object will be F_BKPF_BES.
As I said earlier, the corresponding field will be BRGRU and and not BEGRU.
Then the question is, WHICIH AUTHORIZATION GROUP DO I SET, for the value of BRGRU, there are thousands !!
    To Mohammed
    ============
How do I "block that GL account for postings in GL master record" ??
Programmatically (ABAP) or via Security Role(s) ?
    To Sudhaker
    =========
Could you please elaborate the solution USE VALIDATION.
I am not familiar with that!
Is it something that ABAPers do ?
Could something be done by using Authorization Groups // Authorization Objects ?
Thank you all, in advance for your comments/ideas/solutions!
    Best regards,
    Tom

    Dear Tom,
if You insert an authorization Group into FS00 then You should create a role by transaction PFCG to link to Your user.
Then You have to link to this role the transactions You want the user to use and into the Authorization TAB, You have to insert the relevant intervals of Authorization group, excluding the one to which the user cannot post to:
Changed    Accounting Document: Account Authorization for G/L Accounts
Maintained Accounting Document: Account Authorization for G/L Accounts
       Activity                       Create or generate
       Authorization Group            HERE!!!!!!
Then You have to save and to generate.
Anyway the easier way, in my opinion, is to build up a validation by OB28 at line item (call up point 2) and define an error
message in case the use should use the G/L Account in question.
    example:
    Prerequisite
    BKPF-BUKRS = 'MAO1' AND SYST-TCODE = 'FB60'
    Check
    BSEG-HKONT = '160000'
    Message
Message type   E         Message class     Z1
    Message number  032
Message text    Please don't use the G/L account 160000
I hope this can help You.

  • Login with a network account in offline, possible?

    Hello,
I have a question, since I had before snow leopard server. So the questions now belongs to the Lion Server, the dedicated server. And this is not a issue, but few questions to you and need to plan to setup to the dedicated server if there is a or few way to do!
Before I could login in with a network account from Snow Leopard server from my MacBook PRO. I think there is still possible to do it. But now today I just wonder is there a possible to login in with a network account in offline too, also no internet require? And what is the name for that? True, I don't know a lot of VPN and never used this, can you explain bit about it? But I know when I logged in, I used a Open Directory account and this was "virtual screen", no need to open the screen sharing program or whatever. It just was from the Login Window, also when you are turn on the computer. Do you know what name and know how to could use a network account in offline on my mac?
I just want to give you an example:
If I am sitting in a flight to Vancouver from London, then there I have no internet access in flight trip, so I just login the network account and this had before "cache". Of course need to login in internet first to get all informations and files in computer, so these are stored in my computer. Then I am working with a presentation during the trip. When I am arrived in Vancouver, then I am connecting to a internet, so the computer, also the network account will update to the server with these new files etc or of these what I did in during the flight trip.
Here is few question sticks from the text above:
    1. Can I use a network account in offline?
    2. Do you know any name for this method in Mac?
    3. I don't know VPN, so what do this mean and containing what?

    Hi
"1. Can I use a network account in offline?"
If I've understood you correctly, yes.
"2. Do you know any name for this method in Mac?"
There are several: Portable Home Directories, Mobility, Mobile Accounts etc:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/UserMgmt_v10.6.pdf
Page 215 onwards. Additionally Page 163 if Active Directory is involved.
"3. I don't know VPN, so what do this mean and containing what?"
You could have googled this yourself but here you go:
    http://www.howstuffworks.com/vpn.htm
Essentially it's a means of providing a secure connection from remote networks such as your home or possibly a hotel to a specific location - such as your office or place of work - which allows you to access Servers and/or Services as if you were at that location itself.
". . . so the computer, also the network account will update to the server with these new files etc or of these what I did in during the flight trip."
Depending on where you are and the size of the files this may be a doutftul/painful experience and possibly not worth undertaking? However only you would really know? IMO it would make more sense to sync these files once you were back on the Server's network. It's possible you may benefit by signing up for MobileMe or iCloud?
    HTH?

  • File Share network account

    Hi all
    once again I have questions
I have a network account called Mark.
On my MBP I log into the network account- everything is good.
I log out and then go to another mac. everyhting is good. When here, I save a document called test.
Then I go to my MBP, go to the Documents folder for the user and test doc isnt there. How can I set up network accounts so my students can move computers and still have there docs linked to their network account?

If I'm understanding your question correctly, simply saving a document in a user's home folder on a local machine does not transfer it between machines. Open Directory is only going to authenticate your user's credentials and grant them access to the machine.
You can, however, setup preference and file syncing with Workgroup Manager. You can download it here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1567
Once installed, configure it to connect to your server with your diradmin account. Once authenticated, you can setup file syncing to sync an entire home directory or just folders within it, preference syncing, etc. You can also manage preference for users and groups and enforce company policies regarding security or whatever else you may need to. It can also automatically mount the user's network home folder when they login.
Once you set this up, whenever a user logs into their account on a managed machine, it will run the preference and file sync settings you created.
I hope this answers your question. Or at least gets you steered in the right direction.

May I install OS X Server on Mavericks when it has a network account server configured? Or is the one functionality (here network account server) excluding the other one (OS X Server)?

    Thanks for your reply.
I believe I got it to work, but,... How do you get the network account users to show up on the login window of the client computer? The login window shows the name of the client computer and the local accounts on the client computer. When I select Other in the login list I can login using a network account user id and it logs in. The network account user names do not show up on the login window

If you activated Find My Phone before it was lost or stolen, you can track it only if Wi-Fi is enabled on the device. You cannot recover your loss unless you insure your device for such loss. It is not covered by your warranty.
If your iPhone, iPod, iPod Touch, or iPad is lost or stolen what do you do? There are things you should have done in advance - before you lost it or it was stolen - and some things to do after the fact. Here are some suggestions:

What I need to know is "how" I can separate or rather create another Apple ID for my son-who is currently using "my Apple ID?" If there is a way to let him keep "all" his info on his phone (eg-contacts, music, app's, etc.) without doing a "reset?') Somehow I need to go into his phone's setting-create a new Apple ID and possibly a new password so he can still use our combined iCloud & Itunes account?
Also then letting me take back my Apple ID & password, but again allowing us (my son and I) to use the same iCloud & Itunes account? Does that make more sense??? I'm sincerely trying to get this cleared up once and for all----just need guidance from someone who has a true understanding of the whole Apple iCloud/Itunes system!

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions. To do this, click here and pick a method; if that page doesn't list one for your country or you're unable to call, fill out and submit this form.
They wouldn't be security questions if they could be bypassed without Apple verifying your identity.
