How do I debug designer code in visual studio 2013

VS crashes whenever I try and add my custom control to a form. How do I debug this situation.

Hi trogan,
If you add a simple custom control, how about the result?
Actually it is hard for us to find the real solution directly for the VS crashed issue, but we could provide some suggestions to narrow down this issue.
Like this case I met before:
https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/75a1c5d1-6baf-4b92-8fc8-7d87be09cbe1/visual-studio-2008-designer-crashes-when-dragging-a-usercontrol-from-toolbox-onto-a-form?forum=visualstudiogeneral
If possible, you could refer to it even if it is about the VS2008 crash. At least, we would make sure that whether it is your VS or the specific project issue or others.

  • How do I enable parent paths in Visual Studio 2013?

    I am converting a classic ASP site to a Visual Studio 2013 MVC. When I run the ASP code inside of the Visual Studio 2013 debugger I get the following error message. How can I enable parent paths in 2013?
    Active Server Pages error 'ASP 0131'
    Disallowed Parent Path
    /prospect/contact/contact_search.asp, line 33
    The Include file '../menu_inc/contacts.inc' cannot contain '..' to indicate the parent directory.

    I discovered the answer myself.  Here is how I did it.
    I opened Task Manager and saw that Visual Studio was running processes of IISExpress for the web server functionality.
    I clicked on Start and entered IISExpress to find out where it was installed. To my surprise, but an obvious choice, it was located in documents.
    I opened the C:\Users\Mike\Documents\IISExpress\config folder then opened Notepad as an administrator.  I then opened the applicationhost.config file and under the <system.webServer> element there is an <asp> element. I modified it
    to read. <asp scriptErrorSentToBrowser="true" enableParentPaths="true">
    I then opened by MVC solution and ran the Classic ASP program without any problems.  Everything works!

    In Visual Studio 2005, if I double-click a *.RPT file in Solution Explorer, the file opens in the Crystal Reports editor.
    In Visual Studio 2013 Preview, if I double-click a *.RPT file, it opens in Notepad.  How do I get it to use the Crystal Reports editor again, please?

    Hi Rick,
    Since Visual Studio 2013 is still Preview version, I don't think you can find  something like this:
    SAP Crystal Reports, developer version for Microsoft Visual Studio - 2012
    Please notice that you will need to install additional packages for latest VS version, such as Visual Studio 2010 and Visual Studio 2012,
    For more details, please reopen a new case on this forum:
    http://scn.sap.com/community/crystal-reports-for-visual-studio/content?filterID=content~objecttype~objecttype[thread]
    Or contact SAP for support since it is a third party feature to Visual Studio.

    arr[Insert_Red] = Red;
    Insert_Red++;
    Insert_White++;
    for (int i = 0; i < n; i++)
    std::cout << arr[i];

    i didn't see any result from the widow before it closed
    Other choices which don't require any changes to your code:
    (1) Set a breakpoint at the last closing brace (assuming that there isn't a
    return statement before it - if there is then set the breakpoint on that
    return statement).
    (2) Put the cursor as described in (1) but instead of setting a breakpoint
    use "Run To Cursor" from the menu that pops up when you right-click the
    mouse. (Or use Ctrl-F10)
    (3) Run your program in the IDE using Ctrl-F5 (Run Without Debugging)
    Note that when using these methods, focus *may* remain on the IDE editor. If it
    does then your console window with the output will be a background window. You
    will then need to switch to it manually from the Taskbar, etc.
    Non-related observation:
    Standard C and C ++ require that the main() function return an int. e.g. -
    int main()
    Some compilers will accept void main() so as not to break old code, but new
    code should always return an int.

  • Designing Reports in Visual Studio 2013

    I used the reportviewer control, including the included report designer in VS 2005/2008. Worked great! However, when porting my applications over to the latest VS 2013 and getting through the reportviewer reference issues, I have discovered that I no longer
    have the ability to create and/or modify my existing reports. They running fine. However, there seems to be no way to modify or create new reports within VS 2013. Obviously I'm missing something! I know that there has to be a super secret code or something.
    If anyone can shed any light on this and direct me to the right answer, I cetainly would appreciate it!
     Thanks!

    Thanks for your response and help. However, I don't know that I'm describing the problem adequately. I am developing in VS 2013 Express using localdb as the database server. My project was originally developed in VS 2005. I have 6 reports that were developed
    utilizing the Report Designer embedded with VS 2005 ReportViewer controls. After converting the project to VS 2013, everything seems to work accordingly. All reports run during runtime without issues. However, there is no way to create new, or modify existing
    reports. When clicking the [Design New Report] menu item from the ReportViewer control that is placed on the form, nothing happens. No error, no nothing! I have tried the options listed above, several times, with no success! My next step is to downgrade to
    VS 2010 to see if it works there. One of the other developers has done this with success! I have done this on a Windows 10 laptop with success, as well. However, downgrading is only delaying the inevitable. Someday, this will need to work with VS 2013!

  • How do I make Visual Studio 2013 use my dedicated graphics card instead of integrated graphics on my laptop?

    I am using Alienware 13 as a portable workstation. I do game development on Unreal Engine 4 using Visual Studio 2013. The issue I am having is that when I want to debug codes in Visual Studio 2013, it launches Unreal Engine 4 through the debugger and uses
    the integrated graphics card rather than my dedicated graphics card, which is an nVida Geforce 860M.
    When I wanted to change the settings in the NVidia Control Panel, I see this:
    The drop-down menu is grayed out, so I cannot select to change the graphics card to my dedicated card.
    What should I do? How do I make it so that Visual Studio uses my dedicated card? Thanks in advance.

    Hi tom_mai78101,
    Thank you for posting in the MSDN forum.
    It seems that it is not the correct forum for this issue, since this forum is to discuss Visual Studio WPF/SL Designer, Visual Studio Guidance Automation Toolkit, Developer Documentation and Help System, and Visual Studio Editor.
    As you said that you want to change the setting so that Visual Studio uses your dedicated card in NVidia Control Panel, since this NVidia Control Panel is third-party tool, we are not support it. So please post this issue this issue directly
    to this NVidia Control Panel Official website:
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/nvidia-communities.html , you will get better support.
    Thanks for your understanding.

  • SQL Server Express and Visual Studio 2013

    In February I installed Visual Studio 2013 Professional. Looking in the Control Panel at all my installed programs, I see that I have a bunch of SQL server-related programs loaded, from the 2013 install and also from installs of previous Visual Studio versions.
    I've never done a thing with SQL server express, and am completely clueless about using it. I've already wanted to take a crack at it but it always seemed too daunting, so I backed off. It seems, however, that over the years the integration of SQL Server Express
    with Visual Studio is getting more and more seamless. Here is a list of all the SQL Server-related programs on my computer, with the ones installed automatically from the Visual Studio 2013 install bolded so they'll stand out. What I'm wondering is if I have

  • Crystal Report for Visual Studio 2013

    I read on this forum that Crystal Report is available to be installed for Visual Studio 2013. How do I integrate CRVS into VS IDE you must run the install exe(!)?
    How to get Crystal Reports Editor in Visual Studio 2013 Preview?

    I did face the same error while installing SP9 (at the time of 64 bit runtimes).
    I got this resolved by below steps.
    1. Uninstall SP9 (whole of it)
    2. Install 'Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package ATL Security Update'
    Downloaded http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=14431
    3. Reinstall SP9.

    Hi,
    According to your post, my understanding is that you want to create InfoPath form with code using Visual Studio.

  • Visual Studio 2013 does not rebuild all code resulting in old code deployed through wsp

    I recently converted my SharePoint 2010 project from Visual Studio 2010 to Visual Studio 2013. I have the Premium version with Update 1.
    I quickly noticed that 2013 has bugs. For instance I could get a build error out of nowhere while developing, stating that a method recently added to Class
    A used by Class B, does not exist. The only way to resolve is to restart Visual Studio. Sometimes a rebuild would do the trick too.
    I can live with such quirks as a developer. The big problem is that it does not build the latest version if you are using the "Publish to File System"
    to get a wsp for deployment on another server.
    I've had problems with incomplete builds since my first deploy with wsp built by Visual Studio 2013, but I was not able to pinpoint it with certainty until
    last night.
    I have two classes used by a timer job. In a new version they back up some files after using them. After upgrading with the new wsp, I restarted the timer
    job service on all servers and ran the job, but the files did not back up. So I went and added a log statement to the backup code of one class and did another clean/rebuild/publish to file system from Visual Studio. I upgraded using the new wsp and then restarted
    the timer job service on all servers. When I ran the timer job service, the class where I added the log statement backed up the files it should. The other class still did not. So I added a log statement to this class as well and deployed that. Then this class
    started to backup files too.
    So I conclude that Visual Studio 2013 is failing at its core in a very dangerous way leaving assemblies built in an unknown, incomplete limbo state.
    I am downgrading all projects to Visual Studio 2012.
    This post is mainly to share my experience with the community, but if someone at Microsoft wants to investigate the issue, here is a suggestion on how to reproduce:
    Have Visual Studio in Debug build.
    Make a change to a class in a SharePoint project.
    Deploy the change to a local SharePoint installation.
    Change to Release build.
    Use Publish to file system to get a wsp. Open this wsp, copy the assembly, reflect and investigate to see that code change is actually there.

  • Visual Studio 2013 big debug exe

    During the last weeks i switches from visual studio 2005 to visual studio 2013. My app is written in CPP and we use Qt. In the release version everything is fine. Yet when develloping we use debug build. Unfortunately building is very slow and generated
    libs, pdbs and exe are very big. All the build settings seem to be the same. We create a 32bit app. We use static libs for our own sources but dll for other parts (Qt, OpenSSL, mysql,...)
    Here the file sizes:
    MSVS2005    EXE  34MB, PDB  126MB  LIB  252MB IDB 17,1MB vc80   7,9MB
    MSVS2013    EXE 354MB, PDB 1366MB  LIB 1265MB IDB  8,7MB vc120 70,9MB
    Could anybody please explain why the files are so big now, or better how to reduce the size.
    Thank You very much.
    P.S. Looking to the object files i see that they are about 6 times bigger

    This is a very challenging question to answer.  There are literally dozens of knobs in the compiler that can be tweaked to adjust the size of an executable, I suspect the permutations of all the knobs when applied to several .lib and .exe files rank
    in the millions.  Comdat folding, incremental linking, which parts are statically or dynamically linked are just the tip of the iceberg.  Resources are potentially a huge cost in size as well if you are using large images or embedding large binary
    files in your binary.
    To start, assuming your debug build is not removing unused library references (/OPT:REF), then you can anticipate the size of your EXE to be the sum of the size of the static libraries you are linking, plus the space required for the EXE code.  Are
    any individual libraries larger that you would expect?  What about the exe (after you subtract the size of the static libraries)?  That might give you some individual targets to focus on.
    You can try using dumpbin to analyze the layout of your exe as well as the libraries, that might also provide some insight.
