Adding SQL Server Express to Visual Studio 2013 Pro on Windows 10 Preview

I have installed VS 2013 Pro on Windows 10. I need to delevop unsing SQL Server Express. Do I download the full SQL Server 2012 Express Advanced (with full text search), or do I need only part of it? I was going to download the SQLEXPRADV_X64_ENU.exe.
Is this a good way to go?
Do I also need to download any other .net frameworks?

  • SQL Server Express and Visual Studio 2013

In February I installed Visual Studio 2013 Professional. Looking in the Control Panel at all my installed programs, I see that I have a bunch of SQL server-related programs loaded, from the 2013 install and also from installs of previous Visual Studio versions.
I've never done a thing with SQL server express, and am completely clueless about using it. I've already wanted to take a crack at it but it always seemed too daunting, so I backed off. It seems, however, that over the years the integration of SQL Server Express
with Visual Studio is getting more and more seamless. Here is a list of all the SQL Server-related programs on my computer, with the ones installed automatically from the Visual Studio 2013 install bolded so they'll stand out. What I'm wondering is if I have
everything I need to use SQL Server Express with Visual Studio 2013:

  • SQL Server 2012 with Visual Studio 2013 with SSIS/Integration services project?

I wanted to build an integration services project to import data from multiple sources using a vendor's API.
I wish I could recall how I got to the point where I was able to build one and have it run successfully, but I had to install so many things that I honestly don't remember.
However, I noticed my PC booting really slowly after that, and I saw that I had components of VS 2010, VS 2012 and VS 2013 installed, along with SQL Server 2008 and 2012.  So I uninstalled a bunch of stuff, hoping to get to where I had only the most
current versions of all, that were compatible with my corporate environment.  So I was aiming for Visual Studio 2013 (Premium, I think) and SQL Server 2012.
Took me 2 days.  Now I'm at the point where I think - and I'm here to learn if I'm correct - that I cannot get an oData Source component into my project and use VS 2013 IF I want to stick with Sql Server 2012.  Is that correct?
I get very confused when trying to determine how the acronyms relate:  SSIS, SSDT, SSDT-BI, etc.

    Hi Anonymous11847,
SSDT: Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools for Visual Studio 2010, it contains Business Intelligence project templates for Analysis Services, Integration Services, and Reporting Services that support Visual Studio 2010. This can be installed when SQL Server is
installed. It supports various SQL Server versions as follows:
SSAS projects can target SQL Server 2012 or lower
SSRS projects can target SQL Server 2012 or lower
SSIS projects can target only SQL Server 2012
SSDT-BI for VS 2012: Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools - Business Intelligence for Visual Studio 2012, it contains Business Intelligence project templates for Analysis Services, Integration Services, and Reporting Services that support Visual Studio 2012.
This needs to be separately downloaded and installed. It supports various SQL Server versions as follows:
SSAS projects can target SQL Server 2012 or lower
SSRS projects can target SQL Server 2012 or lower
SSIS projects can target only SQL Server 2012
SSDT-BI for VS 2013: Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools - Business Intelligence for Visual Studio 2013, it contains Business Intelligence project templates for Analysis Services, Integration Services, and Reporting Services that support Visual Studio 2013.
This needs to be separately downloaded and installed. It supports various SQL Server versions as follows:
SSAS projects can target SQL Server 2014 or lower
SSRS projects can target SQL Server 2014 or lower
SSIS projects can target only SQL Server 2014
So if the SQL Server version is SQL Server 2012, we should install SSDT or SSDT-BI for VS2012 to create SSIS project.

  • Sql Server Express Error Visual Studio Isolated Shell Environment

    Hi everybody,
We are working with MSSQL 2014 Express edition in a Windows 8 machine, this version was working ok, but one day stopped working.
When we tried to run mssql manager tool we have the next error:
Microsoft visual Studio Isolated Shell Environment:
    Unknown error
    Thanks

    Hi element111,
According to your description, unfortunately there are little information for troubleshooting. So could you please help to post SQL Server error logs ? By default, the error logs can be found in : C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL12.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Log.
In addition, we need to verify if you can successfully log in SQL Server via local SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS). If not, please post the full error message for analysis.
    Thanks,

  • Visual Studio 2013 Pro - Winforms toolbox icons beside items are missing for some 3rd party vendors controls

I noticed last weekend after installing VS 2013.4 update that the Winforms toolbox, while showing all items, did not display the icons beside the items for any custom/third party Winform controls. The only icon
showing in the toolboxes are the Pointer icon. I can select and drop any control onto a project, and as soon as I move mouse into the design surface the icon shows. Neither the
builtin Winforms controls nor the WPF toolbox exhibit the same symptom. It is specific to Winforms third party controls (ActiPro and DevExpress). At first I thought it was due to the update, then I found that my laptop was
already exhibiting this symptom, running 2013.3 (I had not dropped any controls from the toolbox in the past few weeks so I did not notice).
The two machines (laptop and workstation) are running Windows 7 64-bit Professional and Ultimate, respectively. These machines are dedicated to development, and are secured, also running Norton Antivirus.
I also have VS 2010 and VS 2012 which don't exhibit the symptom, though I finally removed 2012 last night during my adventures. I had all three VS side by side, running well for months (I added VS 2013 in June). VS
2013 had been functioning well on a daily basis for the dozen or so Winforms projects and the odd WPF or MVC project.
I use DevExpress v2014 and ActiPro controls; I have been using them for years now.
I've spent 2 days trying remedies that include:
    Resetting Toolbox
Removal of *.spd files in %APPDATA%, restarting VS
Uninstall Visual Studio, remove and delete of any Visual Studio remnant in the registry, Program Files(x86), %APPDATA% and %PROGRAMDATA%, reinstall.
Repeat step 3 with VS 2013.1 and .3
Downgraded .NET to 4.5.1 to match my third, correctly functioning computer (also running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate).
DevExpress has told me this isn't a problem they have seen. At first I agreed, since my ActiPro controls also are missing their icons, but then I noted that other vendor controls display fine. Not sure what else to do but to nuke the workstation and install
    from OS up.

DevExpress is discussing this issue in the thread here : https://www.devexpress.com/support/center/Question/Details/T174133#comment-a98eedf1-ca54-4920-a2d6-49506ddae5b5
The small sample they provided in the thread actually reproduces the bug in my environment.
Since I cannot post screenshots here on MSDN forum (I explained above, when I try to attach pictures I
receive an error that my account is not verified). There is nothing more I can do.
This appears to be a bug in Visual Studio 2013. VS 2010 and 2012 are on the same machine and do not exhibit
the problem. It is frustrating how unresponsive Microsoft is to my issue. I am a long-time MSDN subscriber, as well as customer of multiple seats of the retail copies of Visual Studio. It looks like the only way to get attention is to pay for a incident. If
Microsoft is interested in actually seeing this bug in action, I have 2 machines that are preserved. I have installed a fresh environment on my backup PC.

  • Error during visual studio 2013 intallation on windows 8.1

After installing windows sdk 8.1, I've decided to install visual studio 2013,when it reached 70% of the installation process it stopped and told me that I have vGraphic data error(data redundancy) what is that??? and how can I fix it,this is the logs file:
    vslogs

I found numerous instances of "Error 0x80070017: Failed attempt to copy payload" in your install log.
For the error code “-2147024873” which is 0x80070017, it means “Data error (cyclic redundancy check)”. I recommend you run the Chkdsk.exe tool to check
    the disk for errors:
    Click
    Start, and then click Run.
    Type
cmd in the Open box, and then click OK.
    At the command prompt, type
Chkdsk /f, and then press ENTER.
Press Y when you are prompted to check the disk next time that the system restarts.
Close all applications and restart the computer.
Note: During the restart process, Windows checks the disk for errors and then starts.

    Visual studio 2013 Update 2

    please Help Me someone

    Hello,
    Welcome to MSDN forum.
I am afraid that the issue is out of support range of VS General Question forum which mainly discusses
the usage of Visual Studio IDE such as WPF & SL designer, Visual Studio Guidance Automation Toolkit, Developer Documentation and Help System
    and Visual Studio Editor.
As far as I know, in order to develop windows phone 8 app, you need to install Windows Phone 8.0 SDK. If no help, I suggest you conuslt your issue on windows phone development forum for better support like this thread:

  • Visual Studio 2013 and SSDT-BI Preview Command Window

    Hi,
Is it normal that VS is putting up a command window when previewing SSRS reports from Visual Studio 2013. It pops  up when on preview and I have to minimize it. Can some settings make this window invisible (a more integrated approach)?
    Regards

    Hi SWEDEV,
Based on my research, a command window pops up when we preview an SSRS report in Visual Studio 2013 is a confirmed issue.
The issue is fixed, but the updated version within the coming couple of weeks. For more details about this issue, please refer to the following Connect Feedback 849709 and 884544:

  • Trouble Installing Visual Studios 2013 Community on Windows Standard 7 Embedded.

    Hi there,
I'm not sure if this is solvable or not, but I cannot seem to get MS Windows Standard 7 Embedded to run Visual Studios 2013.  I have been able to make it work fine on Win7 HP, and on Win 8.1, but it seems to not be compatible with the Win Standard 7

You don't provide much of an explanation to go on with regard to what is occuring which will not allow Visual Studio 2013 community edition to run on WS7E.
Is .Net Framework 4.5 already installed on WS7E? Did VS 2013 Community install with no issues on WS7E? Are any errors occuring? If WS7E has event logs have you checked those?
I have no idea about WS7E or if you have to create an image that will run VS 2013 Community.
    La vida loca
I tried to upload a screen shot but apparently I have yet to be verified human, but I will try to describe what it looked like.  When I ran the .exe from downloads it came up with a window that said to fix the following errors before attempting to install.
The first error said that visual studios requires a computer with a newer version of windows.  The next problem said that visual studios works best with internet explorer 10, but I can't get an updated version of explorer because it is not compatible
with my system.  I can try another version of windows, or a different version of visual studios; however, I can only run windows 7 or earlier, windows 8 is not compatible with my pc.

  • Visual Studio 2013 Versus SQL Server

    Hello:
I have just installed Visual Studio 2013 and I would like to upgrade my SQL Server from 2005 Express. I have downloaded SQL 2012 but I cannot get Mangement Studio to download (apparently others have had this problem as well). I was attempting the download
    at MS Download Center.
Can I use SQL Server 2014 with Visual Studio 2013? And does the management studio download as well?
    Thanks.

    Hi Developer Dude,
Thank you for posting in MSND forum.
    >>Can I use SQL Server 2014 with Visual Studio 2013? And does the management studio download as well?
Based on your issue, I think that the Cor's suggestion is really helpful for you.
In addition, I know that the since the VS2013 and SQL Server are different products, we can install them individually on your machine.
So you could try to download and install the SQL Server 2014 individually on your machine, please download it:
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-in/download/details.aspx?id=42299
In the download page, I know that the SQL Server 2014 Express is include the management studio like the following screen shot.
So after you installed the SQL Server 2014 Express, the management studio will be installed by default.

  • Connecting BI Web Server with SQL Server Express / Visual Studio Express for Report Development

    Hi,
My company is using the Report Builder 3.0 to build the BI Reports ( I guess based on SQL Server 2008 R2). Our software vendor has provided us the web URL to access the BI Server. I want to generate the BI Reports with SQL Server Express or  Visual
Studio Express instead of Report Builder 3.0. Need some guidance in this regard.
    regards, BI.Developer.

    Hi,
Based on my research, if we want to open the report from report server to Business Intelligence Development Studio, we should download the report from report manager, then add this item in Business Intelligence Development Studio. For more details, please
    see the following steps:
Type the URL in IE browser to access the repot manager.
Browse to the RDL file folder or location.
Hover over the report, and click the drop-down arrow near the RDL file.
Click on download button, the download window will pop up now. Then save the rdl file.
Click Manage option in the drop-down list, make a note of its Data Source Connection string.
Create a Report Server Project in Business Intelligence Development Studio.
Right-click the Reports folder to open the Add Existing Item dialog box, navigate to the location where you saved the .rdl file for the report, and then click Add.
Right-click the Data Source to verify the connection string is correct.
Besides, please make sure that software vendor had assigned ‘View reports’, ’Manage reports’, ‘Manage folder’ and ‘Manage data sources’ tasks for your account, so that you can download the report and view the data source.
If there are any other questions, please feel free to ask.

  • HELP - SQL Server Express Install Problems

The SQL Server Express completed without error. However, when I tried to connect to the SQLEXPRESS instance I received one of those wonderful MS errors, "Specified file not found". WHAT FILE? (After all these years MS still can't figure out how
to give an error msg. that provides some hint of what's wrong.)  Going on, I started the install console and selected the REPAIR option.  (It didn't ask what the problem was, it just ran.)  It did ask what instance needed repair.  I told
it SQLSERVER.  It proceeded to repairing it.  My first hint that their repair function worked as well as their error handling was when I got the: That share name has already been used (or something like that) error (notice, MS didn't tell me what
share name, or what aspect of the db they were talking about).  After pressing OK, the REPAIR function proceeded to run to completion.  When I reviewed the REPAIR report I found that three db processes all had the same SHARE NAME ALREADY USED error.
Actually, I thought that it was no big deal.  If this was a real REPAIR, it shouldn't matter that the name was already used because everything else should be the same.  (I know I'm nigh eve about the
Intricacies of SQL server.)  After repairing my installation, I brought up the SQL Server Management Console again.  This time, it did not display SQLEXPRESS in the Connect field.  I selected the drop down list arrow to see if it was
listed and the list was blank so I entered SQLEXPRESS in the connect field and clicked on the CONNECT button.  I got a NETWORK PATH NOT FOUND error.  So, before I really mess things up, I thought I should ask if anyone knows what I should do
next.  (As an aside, I've pressed the MS Error Message HELP button numerous times abut various errors I've received over the years.  Not only are MS error messages useless, their Help Page has never ONCE been able to provide any information
about the encountered error.  MS should spend some time and develop some truly helpful error messages as "File not found" and unknown error code 837289 are absolutely useless and especially since their HELP PAGE is never able to provide any
information either.  I do wonder how I can get Unknown Error codes from people who wrote the code that raises the error.  Don't they document anything?)

I did read the requirements and made sure I met them all. The install package I used was: SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU.exe.  You're correct.  I'm not familiar with SQL Server.
I downloaded SQL Server Express and Visual Studio Express to learn and explore because I wanted to learn about the new technology.
After leaving my message, I did some more studying and playing with the system.  I managed to figure out that I had to turn on the data base service before I could connect with it.  I'm sorry, I don't understand how Microsoft could install a data
base system without turning on its services.  Why would I want to install something and NOT use it?  The default should be ON and the setup manager should provide a choice to set it to OFF on the configuration page.
My experience is rather dated.  I had to retire due to a disability in 2005. I couldn't control my arms and hands.  The doctor recently tried a medication again that I had had a severe negative reaction to.  He first administered steroids
and started me on a small dose and titrated it up as I was able to handle it.  Now I have some days where I have pretty good control — I can print a little but can't write well and other days where I can't print, write, or feed myself.
I have performed many functions.  I have been an analyst, a programmer, a data base designer, and a college professor at three different colleges.  I've done extensive work in process automation and have even automated the management functions
for a data base system that was used to schedule every aspect of all the aircraft, ranges, and weapons development processes on Eglin AFB.  I also wrote major pieces of the code used by the system and trouble shot and corrected functions written by other
programmers.  The system supported over 300 users a day on two bases.  Unfortunately it was developed in Fortran on a VAX and with VB6 and MS Access using VBA, Queries, Tables and Forms on networked PCs.
I plan to do a lot of reading.  I'll also be looking at the Microsoft sites for a sample DB and lessons to go with it.  I am a little frustrated with how information is organized on the web.  The other night I needed to find some information
about something from Microsoft.  It took me almost two hours to ask my question in such a way that MS was able to provide what I wanted.  I kept asking essentially the same thing, but I had to use the exact phrase MS used on the page.  I know
MS is big and they support multiple generations of each product.  They have an almost impossible task.  I just have to find the various product entry pages.
    Thanks for offering your help.
