How do I disable automatic updating? I am about to switch to another browser because of the frequency with which I am delayed by an automatic update without the option to put it off to another time.

I have been using Firefox and its ancestors since the beginning. I am at the end of my rope with it. When I click a link or open the browser it is because that is what I seek to have happen. Unless there is a way to turn off automatic updating, I am going to pack it in and find another platform. I cannot see what would be lost if Firefox would do its updating on the way out, when my attention has moved on, and it is not taking up my time. Is there a solution to this with Firefox?

It is true that the Classic Theme Restorer add-on will NOT bring back all of your customized settings/appearance on Firefox 28, but it will help a little It's recommended that you stay on the latest version to receive the latest security fixes and bug patches but you're free to downgrade if you want.
You can set these prefs in <code>about:config</code> to disable automatic updating: 
app.update.auto - false 
app.update.enabled - false 
app.update.silent - false

I am going to have to use Firefox version 28 forever, exposing myself to many security risks in the process, because I do not like the drastic redesign of the interface in version 29 and Mozilla have not included an option to switch to the old interface.

I was on FF5 and went to Check for Updates ... then it automatically grabbed an update and asked me to restart. I didn't want the update... I just wanted to know if there was one available or not.
I killed firefox hoping to avoid the auto-installation of the new code... but, as you know, as soon as I started firefox, it updated to FF6... now my Java 6.0.26 and Acrobat CreatePDF are broken.
6.0.26 is the latest version of Java, so apparently there's no fix there and the Acrobat update requires a new purchase!
This is insane! How can I check for updates without committing to the installation of a new update until I am ready and have confirmed, in advance, that my plugins are compatible?

Thanks for the suggestion. It makes sense. Unfortunately, my wife will be using the iMac while I'm gone, so she would have to forward what she thought was important. Seems odd to me that the Manual command doesn't seem to do anything.

It's the Resume feature.
When choosing Restart, Sleep or Shutdown there is a checkbox you can uncheck to prevent the apps from launching.
Also in System Preferences > General there is a hard-to-find checkbox under "Number of recent items" you can turn off.
Also, you can hold the shift key to disable resume on a one time basis.
You can turn off Resume globally by going to ~/Library/Saved Application State and deleting that folder.
(note that the User Library is hidden - one way to get there is to go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library")
To turn off autosave and versions globally
If you're experiencing slow opening apps or windows since upgrading to ML... as I have... and you don't want your OS to automatically save your TextEdit files, etc. then simply disable Autosave and Versions via Terminal.
If you don't want autosave or resume you can copy & paste this command into Terminal at the prompt...
defaults write -g ApplePersistence -bool no
Press return
Now reboot.
The reverse would be "yes".

I have a very similar problem in that purchases I make on the ATV are shuttled off to my computer even before I have a chance to watch them. Nothing remains on the AppleTV except (strangely) a show I bought from iTunes months before I ever got the ATV. In order to watch anything, I have to either leave my computer turned off between the time I order and watch it; or I have to have my computer on in order to stream the show back to the ATV. I like the idea of syncing with the computer as a backup solution, but the ATV should be designed to prefer to keep unwatched material on its hard drive until some threshold storage level has been reached, and then it should move off older shows to make room for newer ones.

I need to know how to disable Adobe Update so it only runs when I want it to run. I saw that my i7-920 24gig machine was using 100% of cpu tonight. Im running on a 12 hour old fresh install of Win7 64bit and was immediately concerned when i saw how much cpu was being used. When I checked system resources, I saw that it was adobe update that was using 99% of all the resources. I cant have this. I had the same problem, then I changed the order of the languages in intl.accept_languages (about:config), so that the list now begins with en.
It's all working properly know, also on imbb in particular.

Turn it off.
Start it up again and (at the sound of the chime) press and hold the command and the R keys, hold them down until Recovery loads. When it does you will select Disk Utility and you should be on the First Aid tab when it opens, if you are not please select it. Then select the partition (in the side bar, 2nd entry on the list, see picture).
Yours is probably called Macintosh HD.
Once you have selected it go to the lower righthand corner of the First Aid dialog and press Repair Disk.
This will take 10 minutes approximately. Post back when it is finished and tell me what it says.

How can I use Office Update without the Office CD? On the microsoft website I've clicked the options which mean I shouldn't need the CD (which wasn't supplied with the laptop), but poartway through updating the service pack I get a request for the Office 2000 Professional CD.

Did you mean a Office or One Note?
As far as I know the One Note is a part of the Recovering Image and the CD is not delivered with the unit. Furthermore the Toshiba units are not delivered with the Office 2000 software.
Nevertheless, did you check the update function in the Help i.e. in Word?

Its really simple. I've just bought a couple of mini's and I want to update iPhoto and iMovie which I believe is free. Still I have to enter a creditcard number. The support tells me to enter it and then later to remove it. Remove it? Like in Facebook-remove-it? Why enter it in the first place? I bought two machines including updates. Due to recent protocolls, a lot of advisors are not even permitted to ask for your last 4 digits of a cc for verification purposes. This makes troubleshooting and investigations virtualy impossible now. For that reason, often a trick to get around this limitation is to have the customer add a credit card temporarilty, then remove it.
It is quite possible this may be part of the reason you were asked to do so.

This is the same as what happened to customers in most of the rest of the world in a past release, and it's because carriers want to stop supporting older transport methods.
There's nothing you can do about it other than complain to your carrier, as they're likely the ones who asked Apple to remove the option.
