How do I encrypt a data file so that only I can retrieve the info?

How do I encrypt a data file so that it cannot be read without the proper authority?
I have an application where the customer should not have access to the data I need to record for troubleshooting purposes.  (there are industrial secrets I wish to protect)  My plan is to record a datalog (currently I am producing a tab-delimited spreadsheet format) whenever the device is running and hide the files where they will probably not be found.  But some sort of encryption or at least password protection would be better.
I've never tried to do this before, but thought it would be fairly easy.  Maybe I'm just not looking in the right places.
Thanks

Well, you could look into something like DES, Triple DES, AES, etc.  There are libries floating around for these written in LabVIEW.  I'm not sure about the cost though.
If you want a really simple way to protect your data, just invert all or some of the bits in each byte of your file.  It is super simple and turns a nice ASCII text file into noise when read from a text file.

  • How do I lock my iMac? (So that only I can use it)

I'm going to be having someone I don't know come in my house and take care of my cats over the holidays. How do I make sure he can't get in to my computer?

If I were you, I'd very seriously rethink that whole idea: you shouldn't just be worried about your Mac - how about the rest of your furnishings, clothes, car, appliances, and so forth. I would not ever trust a stranger, especially one found on craigslist. I don't want to alarm you as much as warn you; in my neck of the woods, there have been horror stories about people found on craigslist.
As for your Mac, if you only have one account and designate that a password has to be entered at time of login, all you need to do is log out when you shut down your Mac. If it is booted up, they'll be met with a login/password screen and that's all - they won't be able to get any further unless they know the password.

  • LabVIEW created .DAT file with saving only new data on existing files

I can successfully create and save a .DAT file using LabView and Diadem.   The save command I am using (in Labview) only overwrites existing files, I would like it to save only the new data from the last save.  Overall I would like to save the data every 1hr and since my test will last for many hours, the further along in the test the longer it would take to save the full file.  I know Diadem has the capability to save in such a manner, so I have thought about after I write to Diadem have a small Diadem application save periodically, but I haven't found a way to save the .DAT file, with out any signals coming into the save function.  I have attached the example .DAT file creater and saver I am using to figure it out.  thanks for your help!

    Howdy New Guy -
I am not sure if you are looking to append to a file, or if you would
like to overwrite a file.  In either case, you can take a look at
the "Append To File.vi" example for DIAdem.
Either way, you may be experiencing problems because you are only using
the "DIAdem Simple File Write.vi" (found on the DIAdem >> DAT
Files palette).  Instead, you can use the "DIAdem File Write.vi"
(located on teh DIAdem >> DAT Files >> DAT Files Advanced
palette).  This VI can be set to overwrite or append to file.
I hope this helps in your development!

  • How do i move a data file from my pc to my ipad

How do I move a data file from my computer to my ipad? It is my product catalogue and it would help if it were on my ipad.

Plug the iPad into iTunes and you can use file sharing to move it into an app that supports file sharing and that document format.
    see http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4094
Or, use an online storage service (iCloud, dropbox, box, google drive, sugarsync, etc) and upload the file to that.  Then on the iPad, from within the app you plan to use the file with, link to that service and download the file.
The app will again have to work with that file type, and support the particular service you used.

  • How to create an UTF8 data file with max length fields

We have a legacy application which allows for a transparent text field a maximum length of 30 Bytes.
The DB-Length of the field is 40 Chars.
In old NUC days it was so simple:
    TYPES: BEGIN OF t_items,
             hwmc(30) TYPE C,
    A move, that was it.
Now we have migrated to unicode, use UTF8 for the external data and are puzzeling over how to create an output field with a fixed length of 30 Bytes.
    Has somebody an elegant idea?

wyfwong, >> Does the schema which stores a large BLOB column has to create a large tablespace in order to store the column value or the database automatically enlarge the tablespace when a large BLOB column is loaded into the table? <<
The answer to this question would depend on how you defined the tablespace adn datafiles used to store the tablespace objects to begin with: raw partitions verse files, autoextend on or off, etc....
It would seem to me to be foolish not to predefine the tablespace at least large enough to hold the tables and indexes based on their expected near_term data loads. That is, if you know the initial load of data will be 60G then the tablespace should be larger than 60G to start with.

  • How to design SQL server data file and log file growth

how to design SQL DB data file and log file growth- SQL server 2012
if my data file is having 10 GB sizze and log file is having 5 GB size
what should be the size in MB (not in %) of autogrowth. based on what we have to determine the ideal size of file auto growth.

It's very difficult to give a definitive answer on this. Best principal is to size your database correctly in advance so that you never have to autogrow, of course in reality that isn't always practical.
The setting you use is really dictated by the expected growth in your files. Given that the size is relatively small why not set it to 1gb on the datafile(s) and 512mb on the log file? The important thing is to monitor it on an on-going basis to see if that's
    the appropriate amount.
One thing you should do is enable instant file initialization by granting the service account Perform Volume Maintenance tasks in group policy. This will allow the data files to grow quickly when required, details here:
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms175935%28v=sql.105%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396
Also, it possible to query the default trace to find autogrowth events, if you wanted you could write an alert/sql job based on this
    SELECT
    [DatabaseName],
    [FileName],
    [SPID],
    [Duration],
    [StartTime],
    [EndTime],
    CASE [EventClass]
    WHEN 92 THEN 'Data'
    WHEN 93 THEN 'Log' END
    FROM sys.fn_trace_gettable('c:\path\to\trace.trc', DEFAULT)
    WHERE
    EventClass IN (92,93)
    hope that helps

  • How do I transfer data files (word, Quickbooks, pdf, etc.) to the ipad?

How do I transfer data files (word, Quickbooks, pdf, etc.) to the ipad for safe store and possible reading and manipulation of some key files (word and Pdf)?

You first need an app, or apps, that are capable of reading/storing, and possibly editting them - without the app(s) there is nowhere to copy them to. As to how you then get the files onto the iPad depends upon the app(s) that you are using : iBooks (free app which can store/read PDFs) is via iTunes and the Books section of your computer's iTunes library. Other apps can use the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab on your computer's iTunes, some apps have wifi capability so that you can copy to/from them via your wifi network, and you may also be able to transfer email attachments into the app.

I have a VI and an attched .txt data file. Now I want to read the data from the .txt file and display it as an array in the front panel. But the result is not right. Any help?

    read_array.vi ‏21 KB

The problem is in the delimiters in your text file. By default, Read From Spreadsheet File.vi expects a tab delimited file. You can specify a delimiter (like a space), but Read From Spreadsheet File.vi has a problem with repeated delimiters: if you specify a single space as a delimiter and Read From Spreadsheet File.vi finds two spaces back-to-back, it stops reading that line. Your file (as I got it from your earlier post) is delimited by 4 spaces.
Here are some of your choices to fix your problem.
    1. Change the source file to a tab delimited file. Your VI will then run as is.
    2. Change the source file to be delimited by a single space (rather than 4), then wire a string constant containing one space to the delimiter input of Read From Spreadsheet File.vi.
    3. Wire a string constant containing 4 spaces to the delimiter input of Read From Spreadsheet File.vi. Then your text file will run as is.
Depending on where your text file comes from (see more comments below), I'd vote for choice 1: a tab delimited text file. It's the most common text output of spreadsheet programs.
Comments for choices 1 and 2: Where does the text file come from? Is it automatically generated or manually generated? Will it be generated multiple times or just once? If it's manually generated or generated just once, you can use any text editor to change 4 spaces to a tab or to a single space. Note: if you want to change it to a tab delimited file, you can't enter a tab directly into a box in the search & replace dialog of many programs like notepad, but you can do a cut and paste. Before you start your search and replace (just in the text window of the editor), press tab. A tab character will be entered. Press Shift-LeftArrow (not Backspace) to highlight the tab character. Press Ctrl-X to cut the tab character. Start your search and replace (Ctrl-H in notepad in Windows 2000). Click into the Find What box. Enter four spaces. Click into the Replace With box. Press Ctrl-V to paste the tab character. And another thing: older versions of notepad don't have search and replace. Use any editor or word processor that does.

  • Can anyone tell me how to send a PDF file so that it opens up in the body of the email itself? Thanks

Can anyone tell me how to send a PDF file so that it opens up in the body of the email itself? Thanks

That is a function of the recipient's e-mail software understanding what your software sent.  If it doesn't it will always show as an icon or attachment.   It is also a function of both your internet provider and their internet provider accepting messages of that size, and a function of their download attachment settings in their e-mail program.  There is no way to guarantee it will appear inline in the attachment.   The best you can do is attach with Windows Friendly format.  To do that, use the attach toolbar icon that looks like a paperclip, (View menu -> Customize toolbar if invisible) on Mac OS X Mail when composing the message.   A checkbox appears in the file dialog box's bottom to make it Windows friendly when you navigate to pick the PDF file.  That makes it as universally compatible as possible.  It still may not appear inline, but at least you are less likely to be incompatible.

Ok, how do I put my wmv files on DVD so I can watch them?
Would I have to convert it to an mpeg file ? If I do, what are good freeware software to use? Thanks

You could try the free ffmpegX (http://ffmpegx.com/index.html), which is a highly flexible video converter/encoder (and I believe does WMV as well)... it does require the installation of some UNIX components, however I think this is done through the self-installer.
