How Do I identify a Memory Leak?

I know this is not enought information but...
My application used 3 hashtables in a Data object to store application data. I retrive this data from an XML file. I also download XML and merge it into andother XML file. Some of these hashtables contain object that contain more hashtables.
I am trying to use JProbe Profiler to find the leak. I notice the memory increases when I load the data into objects and put them into hash tables. I also notice an increase when I am merging newly downloaded XML into the current XML data. I am useing Nodelists and NOdes to get the data.
Does anyone have any tips or suggestion on how to find a memory leak?
Thank you,
Al

7 MB of XML file, loaded into a DOM? You realize, of
course, that DOMs are data structures that take up
memory, too, right?Yes I do. I load it into DOM then go through the Document and put the XML data into a custom file format (seialized objects). The data is sent from the server in the form of XML.
There's your problem. If you load X MB into memory
and keep it around as long as your application is
running, that's not necessarily a "leak". Yeah I realized this but it seems that if I load 7MB of my objects into hashtables my memory usage shouldn't increase by 30MB. I just assumed it would stay around 10MB.
The real issue is trading memory for CPU. If keeping
them in memory is crashing your app with OOM errors,
by all means just keep those objects in memory for as
long as you need them and then let the GC clean them
up. Don't put them in a Map, just let them have a
narrow method scope. Recreate them every time you
need them. Yes I'm beginning to see the light.
I'm sure you're thinking, "But recreating them will
cost CPU and slow down my app!" Yes, that's why it's
a tradeoff between memory and CPU.
Do you really need the whole document in memory at
once? If you're just cherry picking a few values out
of it, maybe you can use a SAX parser instead of a
DOM.
No I don't need all that data at once.
>
Either you're screwed or you need to rethink this.
You'd better hope that it's really not needed at
every moment for every client.After rethinking, I'm going to keep the serialized data in the file until I need it. Rather than searching through a hashtable for the object I want I will search the file.
What are your JVM settings for -Xms and -Xmx? Maybe
increasing those will do the trick.I did increase them and it helped a little, but I can still get a OutOfMemoryError if I try.
Are you sure these are the culprits? Have you
profiled the app to see if there are other sources of
leaks?Yes I have been profiling the application. It seems that there is a memory leek. I am just having trouble identifing it. I know the memory increases at 2 points. When I load the XML data into the DOM and when I load the DOM into my Custom object and then into the Hashtables.
Last resort? Buy more physical memory. It's cheap.I think I am going to keep unused data out of memory and access it form a file. After I make this change I think my memory usage will drop alot. I will profile again after I have this change made to see if there is a memory leak.
Thanks for you help,
Al

  • How can I address a memory leak problem with Firefox?

    I have happily used Firefox for the past 7 years, and have rarely had difficulties. However, I am having some trouble now; Firefox (running 3.6.6) seems to have a memory leak on my machine. It's slower than what was discussed in other forum posts, but it still scales up slowly to multiple hundred MBs of Memory with very little CPU usage.
    I have tried disabling add-ons and extensions, but this does not stop the problem. I have cleared my cache and other stored data, but that also does not help. Has anyone experienced a similar problem that might be able to help?

    Hi reble0708,
    I have Java console disabled on my Firefox browser.Everything is working fine for me. There maybe other problem on your browser which is making PDF document faded and blurry. Can you post the link where you found the problem viewing the PDF document?
    Btw, you can go to ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/ and select the previous version of Firefox from the given options. There's no need to uninstall Firefox before you downgrade to the previous version of it.But before new installation, backup your Firefox profile folder.

  • How to fix huge iTunes memory leak in 64-bit Windows 7?

    iTunes likes to allocate as much as 1.6GB of memory on my dual-quad XEON 8GB 64-Bit Windows computer and then becomes unresponsive.
    This can happen several times a day and has been going on for as long as I can remember.  No other software that I use does this - only Apple's iTunes.  Each version I have installed of iTunes appears to have this same memory leak.  Currently I am running version 10.7.0.21.
    I love iTunes when it works.  But having to constantly kill and relaunch the app throughout the day is bringing me down.
    Searching for a fix for this on the internet just surfaces more and more complaints about this problem - but without a solution.
    Having written shrinkwrapped software for end users as well as for large corporations and governments for more than 25 years I know a thing or two about software.  A leak like this should take no more than a day or two to locate using modern software tools and double that to fix it.  So why with each new version of iTunes does this problem persist?  iTunes for Windows is the flagship software product Apple makes for non-Mac users - yet they continue to pass up each opportunity they have had over the years with each new release to fix this issue.  Why is this?
    Either the software engineers are not that good or they have been told NOT to spend time on this issue.  I personally believe that the engineers at Apple are very good, and therefore am left thinking that the latter is more likely the case.  Maybe this is to coax people to purchase a Mac so that they can finally run iTunes without these egregious memory leaks.  I would like to offer another issue to consider.
    Just as Amazon sold Kindles and Google sold Nexus tablets at low cost - not counting on margin for profit - but instead they wanted to saturate the marketplace with tools for making future purchases of content almost trivial to do with their devices.  Apple also counts on this model with their pricer hardware - but they also have iTunes.  Instead of trying to get people to switch to a MAC by continuing to avoid fixing this glaring issue in iTunes for Windows I would like to suggest that by allowing their engineers to address this issue that Apple will help keep Windows users from jumping ship to another music app.  The profit to be made by keeping those Windows users happy and wedded to the iTunes store is obvious.
    By continuing to keep this leak in iTunes for Windows all it does is lower my esteem for the company and start to make me wonder if the software is just as buggy on Macs.

    I have same issue. Ongoing for more than 1 year and currently running iTunes 11.3.
    My PC is Dell OptiPlex 990 I7 processor, 8GB ram, W7 64 [always keep things patched up to latest OS updates etc]
    I use this iTunes install to stream music videos etc to multiple appleTVs, ipads, iphones etc .. via Home Sharing
    Store all my media including music, videos and apps on separate NAS  .. so the iTunes running on PC is only doing the traffic cop role and streaming / using files stored on NAS .. creates lots of IO across my network
    Previous troubleshooting suggest possible contributing causes include
    a) podcast updates  .. until recently I had this auto updates on multiple podcast subscriptions, presumably the iTunes would flow this from the PC to save on the NAS across the network .. if the memory leak is in the iTunes network communication layer (?bonjour?)  this may be sensitive to IO that would not normally occur if the iTunes file saving was local on the same PC
    b) app updates .. have 200+ apps in my library and there is always a batch of updates .. some updates 100s of MB is size .. routinely see 500MB to 1GB of updates in single update run .. all my apps are
    c) streaming music / movies .. seems when we ramp up streamlining of music or movies . memory leak grows faster .. ie within hours of clean start
    c) large syncs of music or videos to ipads or iphones .. noticed that get big problems when I rebuild an ipad .. I typically have 60+ GB of data in terms of apps /  music / videos to load .. have to do rebuild in phases due to periodic lockups

  • How to track Memory Leaks in 3.6.8?

    I've been noticing for several updates now that I seem to be getting major memory leaks. Firefox starts off around 1-200,000 K memory usage in task manager, but within a few hours it will be past 800,000 K. Now, the things I've seen so far talk about disabling plugins and all to find the problem, but this doesn't happen immediately, so disabling things one by one isn't very feasible. How can i track the memory leak to a specific plugin, or else make it leak much, much faster so I can do the one by one thing?
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == A few updates ago

    Well, It just has taken a turn for the worse... In the attached screenshot you can see firefox took 1.123.112kb out of my memory at which point the GUI became unresponsive. This has actually happened before, but not as soon...
    I had 18 tabs open (but at the moment I have all of them opened again after a restart of firefox and it takes 143.988 kb at this very moment, which still is a lot actually). My computer has 4gb RAM-memory of which 46% is in use at the moment according to windows task manager.
    It would be great if the whole tabstructure and maybe the garbage collector for the TraceMonkey javascript engine was reviewed... This might point out where the memory leaks are located.

  • How to quickly and accurately find out the memory leak points?

    Hi, all.I have added a option -XX:+HeapDumpOnOutOfMemoryError in the bootstarp script of my application.
    The application has been run for one day and the OOM error was thrown again. So I downloaded the hprof file and used MAT to parse it.
    But after seeing the leak suspects I still have no idea what's wrong and what's the possible leak point.
    Can anyone shard some experience how to find out the memory leak points quickly and accurately?
    It would be more nice if you can take a loot at the leak supects.

  • Possible Memory Leak, many instances of macromedia.jdbc.oracle.OracleConnection, serviceFactory

    I'm using a plug-in for Eclipse to help identify possible memory leaks however we are having trouble interpreting the results.  The top, and pretty much the only, suspect is this...
    7,874 instances of "macromedia.jdbc.oracle.OracleConnection", loaded by "coldfusion.bootstrap.BootstrapClassLoader @ 0xf935218" occupy 604,781,904 (71.02%) bytes. These instances are referenced from one instance of "java.util.HashMap$Entry[]", loaded by "<system class loader>"
    Any ideas what could cause this many instances?  How do we track this back to a particular cfm or cfc?  Do these number seem high or is that normal?  The system in question normally only has 30-60 concurrent users.
    The one item I'm a little skeptical of is the use of the "coldfusion.server.ServiceFactory" and "coldfusion.sql.QueryTable" objects.  We use them for 1000s of different queries, even queries within large loops.  Could these be the problem?  Each time we need to execute a query we do a createObject for each of these objects, when done we close the connection.  I recently found a similar example where they close the recordSet first and then close the connection, we are not closing the recordSet.  Any help at all is much appreciated.

    It could simply be caused by the obvious: a query or queries making a large number of connections and/or consuming large resources on the Oracle database. Use Eclipse to search your application folder for queries. Can you identify any queries that could be the culprit? Is there a loop containing a method or an instance of a component that queries an Oracle database?
    What's your Coldfusion  version? If you're on CF8 or CF9 then the server monitor (in the Coldfusion Administrator) might tell you the process responsible for the high consumption.

  • Memory leak in external interface SetReturnValue?

    I'm having trouble with a memory leak in my application. I'm
    hoping someone out there can help me find a fix or workaround, or
    tell me what I'm doing wrong.
    The leak seems to be coming from the flash external
    interface; specifically, IShockwaveFlash.SetReturnValue(String). My
    application is written in Visual Basic 2008, connecting to Flash
    9.0.124.0 (activex version).
    I've written a fairly simple flash/VB program pair to
    illustrate the problem.
    The SWF contains a button, 2 dynamic text fields, and the
    ActionScript 2 code below.
    The VB project contains a Form with a AxShockwaveFlash object
    and the VB code below.
    When this program is run, and the button is clicked a lot
    (10's of thousands of times), the application's memory creeps up
    and never seems to fall back down. If the string passed to
    SetReturnValue is longer, memory is consumed faster. But if the
    call to SetReturnValue is commented-out, the application's memory
    usage remains stable.
    If anyone has any suggestions on how to proceed, I'd be
    grateful.
    (By the way: I'm using a freeware program called DoItAgain to
    automate the button pressing.)

    I have developed two simple Java and corresponding
    C++ classes. Use code tags when you post your code.
    You are missing a lot of error checking. JNI calls, every single one, will usually be followed by some sort of error checking. Any that access classes, methods, fields or allocate object must be followed by checks for java exceptions.
    You will need to reduce your code to a smaller sample. Otherwise it is unlikely anyone will look at it.
    You also need to specify how you know that a memory leak is occurring.

  • Memory leaks in my application

    Hi all,
    My application is running well but the memory used by my application is not properly released. If my application is kept running for a day ..then the total system memory is used and server got struckup. can any body help me how can trace for the memory leaks in my application.
    Thanks in advance.
    Santhosh.gandhe

    What version of JDK are you running?
    The Java compiler leaks memory each time a class is compiled. Web applications containing hundreds of JSP files may as a result trigger out of memory errors once a significant number of pages have been accessed. The memory can only be freed by stopping Tomcat and then restarting it.
    The JSP command line compiler (JSPC) can also be used to recompile the JSPs.
    Note: This issue has been fixed in Sun JDK 1.4.x.

    DML for table test_a: "create table test_a (a number, b number, c nvarchar2(2000));"
    When I run method 'DoAll(false)' it takes a ~147MB managed memory and ~307MB total physical memory. After memory collecting it takes a 0.1MB managed and 161MB physical memory. When I set flag 'withoutBulkCopy' to 'true' and ran application again it took same size of managed memory, but 190MB physical memory and after collecting it took 51MB physical.
    If I use System.Data.SqlClient instead of Oracle.DataAccess.Client in this application it takes normal memory size, and after collecting it return to OS almost all memory (19MB physical memory usage).
    System: ODAC 11.1 (1110621), .NET Framework 2.0, WinXP SP3, Oracle Database 10g2
    This is a very important problem, because in real case we have a 137 column datasource with 500k rows. And we lost 500-700MB memory =((
    Please, answer to me how I can avoid this memory leak.
    Thanks.

    You have problem because the batch size property has value *10000* and amount of records(*50000*) bigger than this value.
    You can retrieve workaround from my post (OracleBulkCopy have memory leak  if BatchSize is less than record's count.

  • Finding Memory leaks in C using Visual Studio 2013

    I am using Visual Studio 2013, and taking a course in C programming and we started
    talking about memory bugs detaction, in particular memory leaks, and how to detect them using Valgrind on Linux.
    I want to know if there is a way to detect such memory leaks using VS 2013. I tried searching online but it just leads to lots of articles and blogs and msdn posts and blogs with lots of words like dump files, and analyzing them, etc which is weird
    because:
    1) It sounds so complex, convoluted and unintuitive it is actually hard to comprehend it.
    2) The main reason this is weird is due to the fact that VS is the most advanced IDE around and Microsoft spends so much money on in, yet from what I have read it seems that there is no simple way to use VS to detect memory leaks
    - certainly no way that's as simple as Valgrind where I only have to compile the program and run the command valgrind -leaks-check=yes ProgramName
    and it simply prints to me all location it thinks there is a memory leak and describes the error (like not freeing memory after allocating it with malloc hence having "dead" memory after the program finishes, or accessing memory that's out of
    the array bounds)
    So my question is how to use VS 2013 in order to achieve the same results and to find out First in high level if there are memory leaks in the program, and Second - to detect in a simple manner where those leaks are- preferably without involving dump files
    (not that I know how to use them anyway in VS).

    Hi MicrosoftLaw,
    Thanks for your post.
    Based on your issue, if you want to check if there are memory leaks in the C program from this VS2013. I suggest you could try to find Memory Leaks Using the CRT Library, for more information:
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/x98tx3cf.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396
    In addition, I find a similar thread about this issue, please you refer the Dusty's suggestion to check this issue.
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/45627/how-do-you-detect-avoid-memory-leaks-in-your-unmanaged-code
    I did some research about this issue, I found that the Visual Leak Detector extension tool is a free, robust, open-source memory leak detection system for Visual C++. So if possible, I suggest you could try to use the Visual Leak Detector extension
    tool to find the memory leak for Visual C/ C++ program.
    https://visualstudiogallery.msdn.microsoft.com/7c40a5d8-dd35-4019-a2af-cb1403f5939c
    However, if you have any issue about how to use this Visual Leak Detector extension tool to find the memory leak for C program. I suggest you could directly to write a review to this REVIEW tab in Visual Leak Detector site.

  • How can i detect "Memory leak" with large LabVIEW projects.

    Hi,
    I have a huge LabVIEW application that runs out of memory after running continuously for some time. I am not able to find out the VI that is hogging up memory. Is there any tool that dynamically detects the VI that is leaking memory.
    Or, is there a tool or a way to identify the critical areas which can be potential culprits that is leaking memory.

    But this will just give me the amount of memory used by the VIs and not the amount of memory that is not getting released.
    And where is the problem about that? Just try to find what VIs keep increasing in memory size. That are the culprits. If you have real memory leaks, meaning there is memory that is not managed by LabVIEW directly but for instance by a DLL somewhere and that DLL looses references to memory, so it goes really lost, then the only way to find that is by successively exclude functionality in your application until you can find the culprit.
    There is no other simple way to find out about who is loosing memory references than by doing debugging by exclusion until the problem disappears. The only way to speed this up, which quite often works for me is doing an educated guess, about what components are most likely to do this misbehaviour.
    Not knowing anything about your application and if you are talking about memory hogs (fairly easily identifiable by the mentioned Performance and Memory monitor) or actual memory leaks, it is hard to tell how to go about it. Memory hogs are usually the first thing I suspect escpecially with software I inherit somehow from people from whom I'm not sure they know all the ins and outs of LabVIEW programming.
    If a leak seems likely the first culprit usually are custom DLLs (yes even DLLs I have written myself), then NI DLLs such as DAQmx, etc. and last there come leaks in LabVIEW itself. This last category is very seldom but it has happened to me. However before going to scream about LabVIEW having a memory leak you really, really should make sure you have very intensivly researched all the other possibilities. The chance that you run into a memory leak in LabVIEW, while not impossible, is so small compared to the other ways of causing either a memory hog or running into a leak in an external component to LabVIEW, that in 99.9% of the cases where someone screams about a LabVIEW memory leak, he is simply wrong.

  • How to determine memory leaks?

    I tried in XCODE, the RUN/ Start with Performance TOol / and tried out the various options. I was running my app and looking to see if it would report increasing memory use but it seemed to be looking at my total system (i was running under the simulator). In general what is the recommended procedure for determining memory leaks, which tool to use, and what tracing can i use?
    How does one look at the retain count of an object? are there system routines that have knonw leaks?

    You took the right path. Once instruments comes up select the Leaks tool. Turn off automatic leak detection. In your app, start off at some known state, do something, and come back to the known state and check for leaks. For instance start off in a view, do something that brings up another view then come back to the original view and check for leaks. Leaks will show you if you leaked. Since you took a very deterministic path then checked it should be straight forward to go to the code and find / fix the leaks. Leaks shows you where the code where the leak was generated.

  • Memory Leak in terminateConnection() function. How to resolve it ???

    Hi,
    We are facing a memory leak issue in terminateConnection() function. Here is a sample code regarding that. We have run around 1.5 hours simultaneously and it was consuming around 250MB for this simple program. How could I resolve this problem ?
    bool test()
        string userName = "mapserver";
        string password = "a";
        string connectString = "//localhost:1521/orcl";
        string query = "SELECT GEOMETRY AS GEOM FROM AG_WATER";
        Environment *env = Environment::createEnvironment(Environment::OBJECT);
            Connection *conn;
            Statement *stmt;
            ResultSet *rs;
            try{
                conn = env->createConnection(userName, password, "");
            catch (SQLException ex) {
                printf("ORACLE execution error: [Error Code : %d] : %s\n", ex.getErrorCode(), ex.getMessage().c_str());
                return false;
            env->terminateConnection(conn);
            stmt = NULL;
            conn = NULL;
            rs = NULL;
        Environment::terminateEnvironment(env);
        return true;
    int main()
        OracleResultSet pResultSet;
        while (true) {
            test();
        return 0;
    Does any body help me to find out this problem ???

  • [InDesign CS3] how to find the reason of the memory leaks?

    Hi all,
    I'm working with InDesign CS3. I wrote a plug-in and loaded it into InDesign in debug mode. After I closed the application, I got a console window showing memory leaks as following:
    Leaks! 52 leaks, 716804 bytes
    Press any key to continue . . .
    Does anybody know how to find the reason of the memory leaks? Thanks a lot!
    Nicole

    Thanks Dave. I'm using Windows, and I also tried MemoryTracker. I got a Leaks.txt which shows the detail of memory leaks as following. But I really can't understand it. Any help?
