I purchased a song through iTunes on my phone and I don't know what to do now to make it my ringtone. I also tried to buy it online through Verizon like I always did with my Blackberry but it says you cannot do that with the iphone. Can anyone please help? I'm so frustrated!!

Go to the market an type in Ringtone maker or you can use your little Microphone an say it an there are Several to Choose from.. RingDroid is a Good Choice.

There's no point at all to getting a ringtone making app when you can do the entire operation in iTunes itself. All you'd be doing is downloading yet another app to take up more storage space on your phone to do a basic function that you can do FREE OF CHARGE in iTunes.
If you're smart, you're sync'ing your phone with iTunes periodically to back up your apps anyway so you can just put the ringtones on your phone after making them in iTunes.
Just watch the YouTube video I linked above and save your storage space and money (some cost money, some don't) by not wasting it on a silly ringtone app.

There are many apps in the App Store, which you can download (many are free) that will let you take a song on your phone and turn it into a ringtone. Virtually all of them will require that once you've made the clip, you do something like email it to yourself, then connect your phone to your computer, save it iTunes, then sync it to your ringtones library on your phone. Go to the App Store and type in Ringtone. Lot's of options will appear.

Or open m4a file in Quicktime, cut the bit you need,
then just "save as",
Then rename the .mov to m4r!
Copy the m4r to itunes.

I had to register because I need to let you know what I think.
I am a 45 year old bloke and I have spent the best part of tonight trying to get new songs onto my wifes nokia lumia 800, Ok after 30 mins I managed that then she said 'can I have a new text message funny tone and a new ringtone' So I said yea.
OMG and I mean Oh My God, what on earth do you think you have done? Why have you made it so complicated. Its not real it seems I cant go to the music part on the phone and choose a new ringtone Oh no people on here it seems are unable to distinguish between ringtones and music in one so they split it up. Not only that you have to get zune to register the song/sound whatever as a ringtone genre before uploadidng it to your phone and thats not to mention getting the phone to see the new file in the first place because for some reason you dont want me looking round the files on my pc to upload you want to tell me what i can or cant upload because you know best right. WRONG.
So I try to change it and 'ringtone' is not there for a genre so I thought (pardon my language) bollox I cant be bothered any more, once I think that and i read this thread I find those funny text messga tones I have, well forget that they can not be used only default ones????? Are you real? Honestly someone at Nokia when designing this phone thought 'You know what we will restrict them from changing text message tones because they will like that any buy more phones from us' ARE YOU REAL??????????????
Right I am telling you here and now, I have 2 children both have phones I have one and so does my wife I also have a large extended family and NOT ONE SINGLE ONE OF US will ever buy another nokia. You seem to want to make it such an awful experience using your phones you are must want to bankrupt your company, I mean why else would you do that? Why make a phone so hard to customise that you give up after a couple of hours? Why restrict text message tones to the default ones only? tell me what that achieves what added benefit does your customer get from that? For my part its non.
No as I said I will never buy another of your phones I simply will not pay hundreds of pounds on something that locks me out of even the most basic of functions as text mesage tones and makes other things like ringtones so convoluted and awkward that it gives you a headache.

This how to make ring tones for your iPhone:
Choose the desire song from you library
Do secondary click to your song (right click for PC)
Click "Get Info"
Go to Options tab
Set Start Time and Stop Time, some iOS only allowed 30 sec length for one ringtones, then click OK
Do secondary click (right click for PC) to your selected song
Clik "Create AAC Version", new song from your selected will added to your library (short one)
Do secondary click (right click for PC) to your short one (new song)
Click "Show in Finder"
Rename file *.m4a to *.m4r, click "use *.m4r"
Drag the file to library, for the first time it would automatically add your library with new folder "Tones" under Apps folder
Open the ring tones in the Tones folder of your library than drag it to your iPhone. And your iPhone also would be automatically added "Tones" folder.
Last but not least, set the ring tone in your iPhone under the "Setting-Sound"

How can i make my songs playable?

since i updated to ios 5, i lost all my songs, even though i clicked the "update" not "restore" now i gotta start all over again, but this time when i tried to put some songs on there it showed up as this i dont know what that gray area means, im thinking it was the iCloud but i already chose to put backup on my computer, instead, then when i also checked on my ipod touch, nothing was there. so how can i make my songs playable offline?

i figured this out, you have to go to settings > general > itunes wifi sync OR when you're plugged in with itunes you have to check "sync with this ipod over wifi" so that way, when you try to transfer your files, it goes back to black mode instead of gray.. i know, its kinda dumb.. idk why they make things hard for us to figure it out. but thats how it works.. hope that helps

THe song file has to be in m4r format. Just take your song and convert it into the m4r with a free program like formatfactory ( my preferred choice because it can convert almost any file type) or any other converting program.
now, I'm not sure if the file HAS to be 30 seconds, but if it does, u can download a free audio program and snip out the 30 second section you want and save it as a separate file. Then convert the new file into a m4r.
THen you just add the m4r file into your iTunes library and it will show up under tones.
