How do I manage backups?

I want to backup my catalogues.  Specifically, I want to store 2 backups for each catalgue.
I know how to back them up.  I know how to make them backup to a different drive from the catalgue.  But I'm getting stuck managing the backups.
Catalogue backup structure is like this
backup folder/date and time/catalogue name.lrcat
Say I have a client called "Bob and Sue".  I might edit the catalogue every day of the week and take a backup each time - giving me 5 backups.  I also have a client called Dick and Jane that I edit on Monday and Wednesday and another called Wendy and Steve that I edit only on Monday.
At the end of the week here is what my backup structure looks like.  (I've dropped some times in to make things tidy)
backups/Monday 1100/BobandSue.lrcat
backups/Monday 1115/WendyandSteve.lrcat
backups/Monday 1200/DickandJane.lrcat
backups/Tuesday 1100/BobandSue.lrcat
backups/Monday 0900/DickandJane.lrcat
backups/Wednesday 1100/BobandSue.lrcat
backups/Thursday 1100/BobandSue.lrcat
backups/Friday 1100/BobandSue.lrcat
The ones in bold are the ones I want.  How do I do that?
(Hint: it would be a LOT easier if the folder structure were backup folder/catalogue/date)

Thanks Josh.
For many reasons, I'm going to stick to one client per catalogue.  Mainly for performance reasons.  Plus some client work is confidential and can't be held with other clients.
I've been trialing that exact plugin and have a support call to the developer to see if it can be made to do what I want.  Unfortnuately it appears from the trila mode to delete backups regardless of catalogue name.  So I would be left with just
backups/Thursday 1100/BobandSue.lrcat
backups/Friday 1100/BobandSue.lrcat
from my list.  Which would be very bad.

  • How do Pros manage backup?

This week a horrible thing happened. Ad mentioned in my other post, i lost my time machine drive to some form of hardware/software corruption. And i did the huge mistake of cut-pasting my archived iPhoto library onto the same media! Today i realized that i didn't have a single copy left of the 10 year of photographs!!!
Infact, before i realized that my iPhoto library was on it, i even made an attempt to erase the partition! Luckily, it failed. I am glad that i wasn't able to erase the drive.
Now i have deployed 'data rescue 3' for the job of recovering my drive.
But i learnt an important lesson the hard way, to not depend on one physical media for backups! I had also almost ordered the LaCie cloud box 4tb nas storage when i learnt from the internet that its a single hdd inside. That simply means i was about to repeat the disaster on a much bigger level a few years down the lane.
So can someone tell me how Pros manage backup? What form of media they use and what configuration?
Should i order to nas storages and make one clone the other? I have absolutely no knowledge how ill manage that with a single lan port on my airport express!
Or can u link me to a good read online? Something that clears my mind about this subject?
    How do u manage backup?

Sorry to hear of your predicament.  Here on tips on maintaining a "fool proof" restore and disaster recovery system.  I talk about restore systems, not backup systems.  The goal is restoring the data when needed with minimum loss.  The philosophy is defense in depth.
For an in-depth teatment on this topic see PlotinusVeritas' excellent dissertation on this subject:
Ideal philosophy and security of your valuable data
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6031
"Pros" maintain multiple backups, not just one, and not just two.  The external media is cheap and the data is highly valluable so the equation is simple.  You want multiple backups.  You store only backup data on a backup volume.
You want to store at least one restore volume not in the same building as your Mac.  This is for a marjor disaster recovery such as fire, flood, theft…
You also want to maintain the backups in two different formats:  Time Machine backups and clone backups.
The beauty of Time Machine backups is they are easy to keep up to date and they are useful for going back into time for accidentally deleted or corrupted files.  It will also backup multiple volumes (such as the internal disk/SSD and an external disk) as long as the restore volume is big enough to hold the data in use.
The downside of TM is its complexity.  I have had TM restores fail and I was very glad I had a second copy.
The beauty of clones are their simplicity and immediate recovery.  You can create clones with several software systems (including Disk Utility) but I prefer an inexpensive software system called Carbon Copy Clone.  PlotinusVeritas introduced me to this recovery system recently in these Community postings and love it.
CCC will make a bootable copy of your internal disk.  You get one copy as of the latest backup so you cannot go back in time but instead you have a very simple method to recover your data.  For example if you have an internal disk (as opposed to an SSD) you simply replace your internal drive with the cloned drive and you are up and running immediately  You can also plug it in as an external drive and boot from it immediately.  It is less error prone than TM.  The first time you run it, it does a full backup.  In subsequent runs it copies over only files that have changes so it is a quick backup.
The downside of CCC is you usually run it manually.  You can keep a clone disk plugged in and CCC will maintain a schedule when to backup (such as nightly).
So for a reasonably complete system you would have four backups:  One TM and one CCC backup onsite and the one TM and one CCC backup offsite.  Then occasionally swap the onsite and offsite disks to keep the offsite disks reasonably current.
When it is time to restore you have a choice.  The TM backup will probably be more up to date than the CCC backup.  So I usually start with a TM restore and if that does not work fall back to the CCC volume.  If my CCC restore volume were reasonably current I would start with that.  Others who don't trust TM as much as CCC and don't mind losing the updates that happened between the latests TM and CCC backups use the simpler and more immediate CCC restore.  I start with a ™ restore with CCC as my fallback position.
May you recover your photos and then back them up with defense in depth.

In my icloud account on my iphone I have three ios devices. How do I manage the backup of my old phone ? I dont want to detete that backup completetly, just manage that phone back up ? Please help!

It will be backed up on your computer and can later be restored to an iOS device using iTunes, if desired.  Of course, if your hard drive crashes you'll lose it if it isn't backed up somewhere else.  If you want to included it in your computer backup, it will be located at one of the following locations:
    Mac OS X: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup
    Windows XP: %AppData%\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup
    Windows Vista: %AppData%\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup
    Windows 7: %AppData%\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup

  • How do I use DBV utility for User Managed Backup?

Dear all! I am a student, studying RMAN and User Managed Backup. But I did not understand how to use the DBVerify utility to check a block or a backup of control file. What's command can I do?
    Thanks for your reply!

DBV is a utility which workd with Oracle Datafiles not with controlfiles.
controlfile can be always recreated by you, just issue in a time of backup:
alter dabase backup controlfile to trace; in case you will have corrupted binary copy of controlfile you will have an option to use this trace to recrete it.

  • How do I manage Lightroom photos when using 2 computers, keeping all edits made on either one?

Based on http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1308132?tstart=0 I decided to add each question seperately:
Hello, I'm quite interested in buying Lightroom 5.2. I tried the RC which ran out now. Yet, I have a several questions that I can't really find good conclusive answers to, that I'd like to get answered before buying LR. Please don't write maybe like this or that (assumptions), since I don't want to start my whole workflow and then realize that I have to change everything around, so please answer, if you know for sure that something works and you are, preferably, using that method too.
This is the biggest question, where I mainly want a conclusive answer:  How do I manage Lightroom photos when using 2 computers, keeping all edits made on either one of them, using the same photos for editing. I won't use DNG. Details: I mainly use my older MacBook Pro, but would like to be able to use my PC as it's way better (Specs: i5 2500K, 16GB RAM, SSD, USB3, nVidia GTX 560 TI etc.). I have 2 external HDs that I could use, one for Backup and one for the actual Photos/Edits. I'll probably need to use it as my internal HDs are quite full, and I can't just delete stuff or move it to an (Developer programs, Lossless music, etc.).
Based on this, how do I back up the whole thing e.g. Photos folder (all photos and edits, and preferably presets too)?

I believe it should be possible to work cross-platform without having to relink files each time, or without having to keep exporting/importing the catalog, by keeping the single catalog and the image library on the one external drive which is then switched between systems as needed.
Obvious first requirement is an external drive that is formatted in such a way (e.g FAT32) that it can be used on both platforms in read/write mode. Given that, if the catalog AND the images parent folder are both established at the same level in one overall parent folder, then it should be possible to take advatage of Lightroom's ability to use relative paths rather than absolute paths to detect the images, no matter if the drive is named (Mac) or lettered (PC). This is how "export as Catalog" works, i.e. it creates a "package", aka a parent folder, containing the catalog and a replica of the exported images folder hierarchy alongside the catalog. Take that "package" to another system (same OS or not) and "it just works" even if the drive letter is different or the OS is different....because the relative path from catalog to images is still the same.
I haven't tested this cross-platform (though I have between different PC systems with different drive letters) so for me it's still just a theory, but there may be others who have done this successfully.

  • How do I manage my storage?

I have been mulling this over, especially since I lost some projects when I sold my iMac and upgraded to a new MBP. Here is as consise an overview as I can summize -
I have a MBP with 256 SSD running Logic Pro 9, Reason 6.5 and several plugins such as Camel Audio Alchemy - this SSD is almost full. I Time Machine back up to the 7200rpm 500GB which was replaced by the SSD - this external drive is almost full. I have an additional 1TB 7200rpm drive partitioned into 3; a 135GB (56GB free) back up of my very old G4 (much of which is probably not worth keeping); a 775GB (516GBfree) archive which includes my iMac Time Machine back up (the last back up failed before I safe erased the hard drive prior to selling, probably because I stopped it before it had finished); and a 90GB (60GB free) partition I created thinking I would use this partition for 3rd party loops and samples.
I am sure the performance of my SSD is already affected by the amount of data on this drive even though I have only been creating new projects on this and sometimes copying old projects onto the SSD to continue reworking etc... and so my issue/query is thus, how do I manage this data/storage?
Is it a good idea to strive towards only using the MBP with SSD for the program software and presets and try to keep all project files on external HDs?
I currently have a number of projects doubled up with originals on the 1TB drive and reworking/remixing on the SSD/500GB drive - can/should I amalgamate?
Similarly I have my own presets on multiple applications in the 2 separate locations, how should I manage this?
Is having a 3rd party loops and samples partition a good idea?
Is buying a lacie 4TB thunderbolt throwing good money after a confusing mess and can I continue with my current resources before I need to shell out that much cash?
I feel like I need an IT department but I'm just a one man band!
Any advice or support would be very welcome and gratefully received.
    cheers
    Andy

I have had many of the same issues / dilemmas. Here is my opiniion for what it's worth:
ANDY - Is it a good idea to strive towards only using the MBP with SSD for the program software and presets and try to keep all project files on external HDs?
    Yes.
ANDY - I currently have a number of projects doubled up with originals on the 1TB drive and reworking/remixing on the SSD/500GB drive - can/should I amalgamate?
Yes, I would try and keep them all on one drive
ANDY - Similarly I have my own presets on multiple applications in the 2 separate locations, how should I manage this?
What type of presets? I would keep these all together on the system drive as they should be quite small?
ANDY - Is having a 3rd party loops and samples partition a good idea?
Yes, kind of. I would have a separate drive for all 3rd party samples and sound libraries.
ANDY - Is buying a lacie 4TB thunderbolt throwing good money after a confusing mess and can I continue with my current resources before I need to shell out that much cash?
Maybe. Remember that however big a drive you have, you need to have another one at least as big to back everything up on to. Using time machine in any other way is a real pain.
So, if it's any help, how I use manage my storage currently is this:
1 x Macbook Pro with 500GB SSD - This contains all the applications and system data as well as any files I need to take with me if I go anywhere and don't take the external drives (certain MP3s for DJing). All the Logic 'Additional Content' is also on here, but I may need to move that soon (or delete it if I never use it)
1 x USB3.0 bus powered 2TB WD portable hard drive - This contains all the sound libraries / samples that I need to be loaded quickly. Currently 928GB in total.
1 x USB2.0 2TB WD external hard drive. This contains all data that doesn't need to be accessed regularly or very quickly (Unused applications, photos, videos, video tutorials, archive of MP3s not used anymore for DJing, and various backups of the internal SSD driver
Then I would have a 4TB time machine backup external drive - if a WD elements one was available - at the moment they only go to 3TB, so I currently split the backup over 2 other drives manually.
I also keep my current logic projects (for the current year) on the internal SSD for very quick loading. At the end of the year I move all the old ones I've finished with to the USB2 external drive.

  • How do you manage license aquisition?

I'm interested in how other people manage confirming that a valid license is in place for new projects?
Currently our stated policy is that the DBA has to see a copy of the purchase order before performing an install, however this results in the perception that the DBA team is a roadblock standing in the way of progress. It also means we get dragged into endless tedious discussions about how expensive everything is and how we should use postgress/MariaDB/colon delimited flat files etc. instead of oracle. The reason we ask for the PO is because its us that end up producing data for Oracle if/when we get audited and blamed if there are any discrepancies.
    Chris

Currently our stated policy is that the DBA has to see a copy of the purchase order before performing an install, however this results in the perception that the DBA team is a roadblock standing in the way of progress. These perceptions and concerns should be re-addressed to policy maker(s).
It also means we get dragged into endless tedious discussions about how expensive everything is and how we should use postgress/MariaDB/colon delimited flat files etc. instead of oracle.Well. In some cases it may be worth to use something else, not Oracle, for some needs. You do not need a nuclear rocket to kill a bird.
However, whoever requests a database that is different from enterprise standard, not supported by DBA department/team, should realize that their will be on their own, ending up without proper enterprise backup, support, maintenance etc.
If they do not have resources for licensing and maintenance, they should plan resources for other ways of support, and should take responsibility for their data integrity.
Of course, all this should be reflected in policies.

What is "other" in the capacity bar and how do I manage it?

The "other" is mainly corrupt files and files that did not get deleted by apps one the app was done with the file. Normally the other s less than 0.25 GB.  To reduce the size of other, usually a restore to factory defaults/new iPodis required.  Sometimes restoring from backup helps a little.

Hi, how do I manage storage? Disk Utility says “other” is taking up most of my storage but I don’t know where to find “other".  Please help!

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
              iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation—not the mythical 10%, 15%, or any other percentage. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside a photo or iTunes library will corrupt the library. Changes to such a library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper 2>&-
    sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective 2>&-
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Ignore any other messages that appear in the Terminal window.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Managed Backup to Windows Azure

    Hello,
    I am following this article
to setup my sql server to perform automatic backups to Azure blob storage.
However, when I try to run the  smart_admin.sp_set_db_backup stored procedure, it fails, since it could not be found.
It seems to be necessary having SQL Server 2012 SP1 Cumulative Update 2 installed.
I think I could properly install this fix, following instruction located in
this article, but after installing the patch, when I open Management studio and connect to the database instance, I can see it is still 11.0.2100 build.
As far as I understood, it must be 11.0.3339.0.
How can I make sure to have this patch installed?
    Igor.
.NET Software developer for industrial internet and automation system.

    Thank you Samuel,
You are right. It seems the syntax you referenced works. At least, I was able to create a backup into my azure storage account.
Does that means SQL Server Express 2012 does not support managed backups like article I was reading? What do you suggest?
    Thank you,
    Igor.
.NET Software developer for industrial internet and automation system.
    Hi Igor,
For SQL Server versions previous to SQL Server 2014, you can use the add-in SQL Server backup to Windows Azure tool to quickly and easily create backups to Windows Azure storage.
This feature is available in SQL Server 2014 or later. Usually, we can back up to disk and tape, now you can back up to Windows Azure storage by specifying URL as the backup destination. You can use this feature to manually backup or configure
your own backup strategy like you would for a local storage or other off-site options. This feature is available in SQL Server 2012 SP1 CU2 or later. For more information, see:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj919148(v=sql.120).aspx
In addition, the SQL Server Agent component is not included in SQL Server Express editions , you could not create backups automatically via a job and offer a way to schedule either jobs or maintenance plans. However, you can use a Transact-SQL
script together with Windows Task Scheduler to automate backups of SQL Server Express databases on a scheduled basis. For more information, see:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2019698/en-us
