SQL 2014 Azure Managed Backup Issues
Hi all,
We recently enabled Azure Managed Backup on one of our DEV boxes running on SQL 2014. After turning on extended mail notifications, we have begun seeing several errors getting logged. Some of them are as follows:
[SSMBackup2WAAdminXevent] Database Name = WS_AppOneInterface, Database ID = 13, Stage = VerifyJobOutcome, Error Code = 3271, Error Message = Processed 7581 pages for database 'WS_AppOneInterface', file 'WS_AppOneInterface_log' on file 1. [SQLSTATE 01000]A
nonrecoverable I/O error occurred on file "https://******.blob.core.windows.net/********-mssqlserver/WS_AppOneInterface_452a51d376e54b92a284132f52ead429_20140831221756-05.log:"
Backup to URL received an exception from the remote endpoint. Exception M
[FileRetentionAdminXevent] Type = SqlError, Code = 3292, Stage = Undefined, Message = A failure occurred while attempting to execute Backup or Restore with a URL device specified. Consult the Windows Event Log for details.
RESTORE HEADERONLY is terminating abnormally., Additional Info = N/A.
When I look at the folder in Azure storage, I see a ton of log & bak files. So are the backups working or not working? How can I tell? If SQL encounters an error, does it retry? How often? How can I check the backup status of each database on the server?
Thanks,

Is backing up and Restoring SharePoint 2013 SP1 Farm with SQL 2014 RTM "Always On" High Availability now supported using "System Center 2012 R2 Data Protection Manager"?
I cannot find information anywhere.
Regards,
IgorThis is a DPM supportability issue, I believe. Last I heard, no it was not supported. SharePoint 2013 does not support SQL 2014 until the April 2014 CU. The CU should be out soon, although it appears to have been delayed (usually comes out on Patch Tuesday,
which was this past Tuesday).

Workflow Manager Configuration Issue Windows Server 2012 R2 / SQL 2014
Hello All,
Environment: SharePoint 2013 Enterprise with SP1
Farm consists of
2 App Server, 2 Web Server and 2 SQL Servers all the server have Windows 2012 R2
OS . The SQL backend is SQL Server 2014
Installed Workflow manager on the Web server, the configuration ran fine without any errors. Trying to browse the workflow management site via IIS Manager encountered Certificate Error clicked Continue to this website which gives a HTTP 403 Forbidden and
following detail message
This error (HTTP 403 Forbidden) means that Internet Explorer was able to connect to the website, but it does not have permission to view the webpage.
Checked the web site Workflow Management Site in the IIS manager which has only one folder bin . I was not able to submit the Screenshot
I have installed the latest patch for the Workflow manager and the Service Bus
Question I have
Should there be more folder under the Workflow Management Site.
Why is the Web site not showing the web page
Is workflow manager supported for Windows Server 2012 R2 and SQL 2014
Thanks
DhanrajHi Dhanraj,
I captured the screenshot from my IIS Manager on workflow server. There is only bin folder under Workflow Management site
If I browser workflow host uri from IIS Manager
https://localhost:12290, I received certification error, and I chose the continue to this website, it returned me as follow:
From the link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2902007/en-us It is supported on Windows Server 2012 r2 if you have install latest update.
Here is an article which talks about error:
http://www.sp2013blog.com/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=36
In addition, here is the reference for troubleshooting workflow manager 1.0 management:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj193529(v=azure.10).aspx#AnalyzingWorkflowManagementLogs
You could also open SharePoint Designer 2013 and see if you could create a workflow on platform 2013.

Managed Backup to Windows Azure
Hello,
I am following this article
to setup my sql server to perform automatic backups to Azure blob storage.
However, when I try to run the smart_admin.sp_set_db_backup stored procedure, it fails, since it could not be found.
It seems to be necessary having SQL Server 2012 SP1 Cumulative Update 2 installed.
I think I could properly install this fix, following instruction located in
this article, but after installing the patch, when I open Management studio and connect to the database instance, I can see it is still 11.0.2100 build.
As far as I understood, it must be 11.0.3339.0.
How can I make sure to have this patch installed?
Igor.
.NET Software developer for industrial internet and automation system.Thank you Samuel,
You are right. It seems the syntax you referenced works. At least, I was able to create a backup into my azure storage account.
Does that means SQL Server Express 2012 does not support managed backups like article I was reading? What do you suggest?
Thank you,
Igor.
.NET Software developer for industrial internet and automation system.
Hi Igor,
For SQL Server versions previous to SQL Server 2014, you can use the add-in SQL Server backup to Windows Azure tool to quickly and easily create backups to Windows Azure storage.
This feature is available in SQL Server 2014 or later. Usually, we can back up to disk and tape, now you can back up to Windows Azure storage by specifying URL as the backup destination. You can use this feature to manually backup or configure
your own backup strategy like you would for a local storage or other off-site options. This feature is available in SQL Server 2012 SP1 CU2 or later. For more information, see:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj919148(v=sql.120).aspx
In addition, the SQL Server Agent component is not included in SQL Server Express editions , you could not create backups automatically via a job and offer a way to schedule either jobs or maintenance plans. However, you can use a Transact-SQL
script together with Windows Task Scheduler to automate backups of SQL Server Express databases on a scheduled basis. For more information, see:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2019698/en-us

SQL Server Express 2005 to 2014 upgrade and Uninstallation issues
We have client application running SQL Server Express that connects to a SQL Server 2012 server. We are attempting to upgrade from Microsoft SQL 2005 express to Microsoft SQL Server 2014
express – but are having difficulties – especially with uninstall.
Our understanding is that we needed to follow the following steps:
First we install Microsoft SQL 2005 express SP4 as required silently
Start /wait SQLEXPR.exe /qn ACTION=UPGRADE INSTANCENAME="SQLEXPRESS" UPGRADE=SQL_Engine SAPWD=<password>
SQLACCOUNT="NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM" SQLPASSWORD= SECURITYMODE="SQL"
Then try upgrading with Microsoft SQL Server 2014 express, we use following command to do it silently
SQLEXPR.exe /q /ACTION=upgrade /INSTANCENAME=SQLEXPRESS /ISSVCAccount="NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM" /IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS
We see following
In Control Panel -> Uninstall or change program, we have all the instances listed 2005, 2008, 2012 and 2014.
How do we uninstall the instance? , We try uninstalling 2014
But it is not cleanly uninstalled.
Questions:
Is there any way for clean upgrade from Microsoft SQL 2005 express SP3 to Microsoft SQL 2014 express?
Is there any specific steps suggested to uninstall upgraded SQL 2014 express from system?
Are we doing anything wrong in commands for silent upgrade?
Thanks in advance.Hello,
After you perform an in-place upgrade it’s normal to find the binaries and references of the old version of SQL Server on the Start Menu and Control Panel -> Programs and Features. That’s by design. After you have successfully upgraded an instance, you can
remove the old binaries.
IfIf you find some remnants after uninstalling SQL Server 2014, please perform the following steps to manually uninstall it:
1. Uninstall all SQL Server 2014 components you can using Control Panel -> Programs and
Features
2. Backup the registry.
3. Delete the following keys in regedit:
--HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server
--HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer
4. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall and delete
all the sub-keys referencing SQL Server.
5. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services and delete all the keys referencing
SQL Server.
6. Rename all the SQL Server folders in the computer like
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server and subfolders.
Hope this helps.

Hello Team
I am seeing this issue while I am trying to do an in-place upgrade from SQL Server 2012 to SQL 2014. Both being Enterprise Editions I am still seeing the below error message in the Feature Upgrade checks.
" The specified Edition upgrade is not supported"
Please let me know if anyone else has faced this issue and any workarounds? I am not doing "Edition Upgrade", just wanted to upgrade same edition of 2012 to 2014.
SQL Server details that is being upgrade:
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 (SP1) - 11.0.3368.0 (X64)
May 22 2013 17:10:44
Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation
Enterprise Edition: Core-based Licensing (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.2 <X64> (Build 9200: )
thanksHi Shanky_621
Thanks for the reply. Yes I was told that it is SQL 2014 Enterprise Edition. Is there a way to verify that? Also yes I did not select the free Evaluation or Express Editions.
Just run the setup you got for SQL server 2014 and you would reach to page where it would say enterprise or standard after that cancel the setup . Actually version number can be found from Mediainfo located in same folder where setup.exe is located but edition
cannot be found by that way.
Please mark this reply as answer if it solved your issue or vote as helpful if it helped so that other forum members can benefit from it.

SCOM Management Servers not working after DW upgraded to SQL 2014
Hey guys,
Our setup is that we have 2 Management Servers running SCOM 2012 R2 UR3 on Server 2008. I want to say exactly what our problem is, and what my guesses are at it. Any additional information you need please just ask.
Problem = In the SCOM console we have the management servers and Gateway servers going grey. If i go to these servers and restart the Monitoring service, it acts like it was locked up or something and has to force stop it and restart it. Once back up, everything
works fine. Then it goes grey again at a random interval between 5-120 minutes. Recycle Repeat. I reviewed the Event Log during this and afterwards and ALOT of stuff points toward the DataWarehouse and not being able to write stuff to it. I have two suspicions.
Idea 1 = Another Engineer recently updated SQL on the Datawarehouse server to 2014. I recently found this had caused a problem with SCSM reporting and had to do some stuff to fix that.... so I was thinking that maybe this had something to do with it.
Idea 2 = Also around the same time... UR3 came out. This was auto pushed out to all the server and agents through WSUS, I also went through and manually did all the steps for this. Its still possible i suppose that I missed something.
Basically Im just looking to see if anyone has any advice as to what to check next, and/or see if anyone else has had this problem. Thanks guys!I unfortunately do not have a solution for you, but can still try to provide some info :
1. SQL 2014 is NOT supported with system center 2012 R2! See http://technet.microsoft.com/library/dn281933.aspx
2. You might want to try the procedure for moving the databases : http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh278848.aspx -
SQL 2014 changed my NTFS permission - default backup directory setup
Hello everybody.
Today I realize that new SQL 2014 changed my existing folder permissions (NTFS). This folder was shared for domain users and had set NTFS permissions for domain users and local administrators.
In setup of SQL I set backup directory to this shared folder and continued with setup. After finisting setup I realize that this folder is not accesible via network. Finally I realized that setup changed permissions - it added his MSSQL$INSTANCENAME account
into Security Tab and added all permissions to it. Other permissions was erased!
What the hell MS is wrong with you?
I must retake ownership to this folder and subfolder to fix it.
This is not funny and I think it is a BUG! I think that older SQL servers do not have begavior like this new one 2014.
Maybe it will be helpfully for somebody.
Maybe Microsoft found his lost saying - This is NOT a BUG, it is a FEATURE!
Have a nice day and keep calm.
Jarda Nechvatalit added his MSSQL$INSTANCENAME account into Security Tab and added all permissions to it.
Other permissions was erased!
Hello Jarda,
That's nothing new and you have this behaviour in all SQL Server Versions; the SQL Server Service account is the owner of all subfolders of the Installation, even because the account needs permissions to read+write to those folders. So it is not a bug, it's
by design and if you need different permissions on those folders then you have to define them manually.

How to protect (take backups) SQL 2014 AAG databases from DPM 2012 R2 with RU2
We have just upgraded / replaced our SQL Server plattform in the following way:
SQL Servers:
3 Servers running Windows 2008 R2 + SQL Server 2012 CU9
Upgraded to SQL 2014 so the system databases were up to the latest level
Removed all AlwaysOn AAG, destroyed cluster etc
Then total reinstall of all servers with Windows 2012 R2 + fresh install of SQL 2014
Replaced the fresh system databases with the old upgraded databases
Upgraded SQL 2014 With CU2
Re-setup a New cluster and AlwaysOn. All SQL Servers are running fine
DPM 2012 R2 With RU2:
Removed all previous backups of both AAG, Bare Metal etc related to the old servers.
Uninstall the DPM agents
Reinstalled agents after the 3 new serves where ready
Added Bare Metal backup. Works fine.
Added SQL Server backup of databases not part of any AAGs. Works fine.
Then comes the problem: I try to add protection of the new AAG's in DPM. I can see the new cluster and the AAG's, but when I try expand each Group, nothing shows up. It takes around 20 sec or so after I try to expand.
Any clue about what can be wrong?

I have setup SQL 2014 for my DB server, however the pre-requisite check is failing. When I checked the compatibility on TECHNET, 2014 is listed as supported for SCCM 2012 R2. Can someone let me know if there is a patch that's needed.
Thanks in advanceConfigMgr 2012 R2 are supported with SQL 2014.
Just use the 3020755 hotfix.

New table in msdb database of SQL 2014
Hi All, I've seen a table in MDSB database of SQL 2014 CTP version.
Table name is = smart_backup_files
Can any body explain the purpose of this table and where to use this one.
Asheesh pandey SQL server DBASmart Backup is a feature in SQL Server 2014 where in SQL Server can now manage your back up schedule using the new Managed Backup to Windows Azure feature. It determines backup frequency based on database usage patterns.

SQL 2014 cluster shared volume
Hi,
I have testing SQL 2014 cluster in my lab to see how it's performing. 2xserver 2012r2 (virtual machines). There are some weird issues that are putting me in dust.
1. If I try to backup/restore database, I cannot select data path from gui. (I cannot "browse")
2. I cannot connect applications to databases (sqlclustername\instance) - permissions denied on cluster shared volume.
Can you please give me a hand on this?
Thank you. Please check Symantec Backup Exec 2014 it works with CSV.
remove the CSV from the failover cluster manager and then try to point the tool and see if it is able to see the volumes without CSV.

Moving SCCM 2012 R2 SQL 2014 Database to New Server
Greetings,
I have a SCCM 2012 R2 server with SQL 2014 installed which has been upgraded from SQL 2008 R2. My goal is to separate the SCCM and SQL servers. I am aware that SCCM only supports SQL 2014 if it has been upgraded on new installs, but after installing
SQL 2014 on a new server and importing the database I get an error from the Configuration Manager Setup stating that I must upgrade the SQL server before I can modify the SQL Server configuration.
Does this mean I need to install SQL 2008 or 2012 on the new DB server and from there upgrade to SQL 2014?Thank you for your reply. We have been having several issues with our current server, and have had performance issues with SQL and SCCM installed on the same server mainly during OSD deployments to several machines at the same time. These servers
wouldn't necessarily need to be separated since we can allocate more resources, but the overall goal is to move our primary site server to a new server running Server 2012 R2 (current server is 2008 R2).
I have tried the site recovery option in the installer where you run the SCCM backup and restore maintenance task and I have renamed the new server to the name of the old server. If I understand correctly, this is the correct method of switching out
a site server machine? I experience the same error as my original post when trying this, but I will try the hotfix Torsten provided as this seems to be the issue I'm having.
Thank you. -

A.)
...for 0x81080101:
"ERROR - The shared restore point operation failed with error (0x81000101)
The creation of a shadow copy has timed out. Try again this operation."
If you receive the above error in your report, we have recently found a registry key which
contains the timeout value set by Microsoft for VSS and found that you can edit this to extend it.
To get to the registry key, open Regedit (Start > Run > Regedit) and browse to:
"HKLM\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion\\SPP\\CreateTimeout".
Change value to 1200000 (2*10*60*1000 = 20 mins).
The default for the timeout period is 10 mins so hopefully doubling this will give enough time to
complete the snapshot.
If this isn't present, you'll need to manually enter the registry key. It's a DWORD 32-bit key.
--> NOTE: HAve not done this yet.

Scot PichelmanHi Scot,
Sometimes a third party backup application will change the default VSS provider adding VSS writers which causes Windows Server Backup using an incorrect component in doing backup, that's why I suggest to delete it for a test. Anyway you can reinstall it
after testing.
And as you said a high-load CPU could also be the cause of the issue so you may need to first rule hardware effective out.
If issue still exists, please try the steps below as well:
1. Please check DCOM Server Process Launcher service is started.
2. If not, try to change RPC service to run as SYSTEM account. To do this please modify the following key:
Note: Backup the key before edit incase it cause any issue.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\RpcSs\
Find "ObjectName" and change the value to LocalSystem.
Reboot to see if DCOM back to work and if Windows Server Backup starts working. If not, please provide the result if there is any new error occurs.
If DCOM still not work, please compare the content of the following key with a working server:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\OLE
Edit if there is any difference and make sure you created a backup of the key before editing.
