How do I re-install a portable 500GB hard drive G drive in my G5 IMac?  It doesn't seem to be showing up in my finder window.

How do I re-install a portable G drive in my G5 IMac?  It doesn't seem to be loaded in my Finder window.

Correction.... that should be:
First check your Finder Sidebar Preferences to make sure that "External disks" is checked.
Then on to:
If that doesn't help, disconnect the portable drive, restart the iMac, reconnect the drive.
If that doesn't help, test the G-Drive on another computer and/or another External Hard Drive on your iMac.

    Snow Leopard 10.6 Technical Requirements - http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
You can buy Snow Leopard at:
Snow Leopard disc source - http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
You could contact Apple Support and see if they have the original discs for that machine but it would be 10.4.11 and there's no reason not to go to at least Snow Leopard, especially since the 10.6 discs would probably cost the same as a replacement set of 10.4.11

  • Old hard drive crashed, how do I re-install my music from iPod to new drive

My hard drive crashed and I received a new hard drive from Dell. Reinstalled most applications, however, prior to downloading iTunes - how do I ensure that the songs I purchased, playlists, and other songs I added from CD's are available?
I also have other users - with iPods, and they had (and have reestablished user accounts) their own iPods and music libraries. I want to be sure their music is transferred as well.
I do have access to all iTunes music file for each user from the damaged drive. Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

1). Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to sync automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
Alternatively open iTunes first and go to Edit>Preferences>Devices and check the box "Disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods" and choose Ok. Then connect your iPod.
3). Once you are connected and your iPod is safely in manual mode there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. iTunes will only let you copy your iTunes Store purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads and including iTunes purchased songs and in some cases, videos and games) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

A selection of iPod to iTunes utilities:
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
SharePod Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows
    Floola Mac & Windows
iPodRip Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
Music Rescue Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
4). Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • Installing on a 500gb hard drive, in a PowerMac G5

I have no way of finding out the password to get through. I am doing a clean install of Mac OS X v10.3.2, using a pc keyboard at the moment.
C-key isn't responding, so I held down alt. I am dead end with  this firmware password protection. Help!!!

The C key thing isn't firmware password protection (or you'd see it asking for a password), it's a matter of the very basic computer system running at pre-OS installation not understanding a non-Mac keyboard.  Sometimes third party devices will work after the OS is running, but at pre-OS time you really need  the parts that came with the computer originally.  Maybe there's an answer other than this, but I don't know it.

  • After replacing the OS on my laptop, how can I sync my bookmarks back to that laptop using my existing sync account? There doesn't seem to be a path to doing this based upon the instructions I've seen.

I've done a clean install of Windows 7 to my laptop and so have of course lost my previous Firefox installation. I do have a sync account and have sync'd my bookmarks to my Android phone. I can't find an option in Firefox to sync bookmarks back to the computer from which the sync account originated. There is of course no sync account set up in the newly installed browser, and my only practical option is to create a new account. I am afraid to enter my current account information here, because I don't want to take the chance of having Sync overwrite my stored records with the pristine state of my newly installed browser. When I click the link for existing accounts, I'm directed to the "Add a Device" screen, but this screen presumes I'm sync'ing to a device other than the one I currently working on. I can't discern a way of adding my laptop as a "new" device.

    K Thanks Coach,
The problem isn't so much that I dont have the facility to rate the files... I can rate tracks from my library using Media Monkey.
The issue is more that I have a couple of thousand unrated tracks - most of them are new songs that i've never listened to before (I work in a music store!). I want to be able to listen to them and rate them when I go for a run, and then have the ratings transferred onto the computer library.

  • How do i show icloud in the Finder window?

I've read tricks on how to show iCloud as a virtual folder to store files.  They all say to show the hidden Library and find "Moblile Documents"  But i don't have this.  What am i doing wrong?
I want to be able to create a document in word on my mac, go home and open it on my ipad and make adjustements, then come back to work and open it again and see all my adjustments.

No it does not work this way.
To work in that way under finder I whould suggest you to try GoodReader. https://itunes.apple.com/it/app/goodreader-for-ipad/id363448914?mt=8
It costs about 5,00$ but can do a lot of things like WiFi transfer for any file and you will be able to see the iPad as a Disc on the Mac undr Findr.
But since you have everythyng correct it is strange you do not have the sayd Folder.
Let me ask one more question?
Have you searched under your user account  Library ?  There is also a Library in the main HardDisc, which is not hidden and does not contain the sayed folder.
Sorry to ask but it is the only idea I have at the moment why do you not find the folder.
PS: Good reader has nothing to do with iCloud. It trasnfers files between iMac and iPad/iPhone

  • I know how to remove a installed program on a pc.  How do you remove one from a mac?

I know how to remove an installed program from a pc.  However, I just purchased an imac and installed mcafee security on it.  It totally messed up by printer.  I want to remove it from my imac.  How do you do that?  I moved everything I could visually see to the trash, but it is still on the imac.  Help.

    This from McAfee website:
    Steps to uninstall:
Click Go from your Finder window.
    Select Applications.
Double-click the McAfee Internet Security Uninstaller.
Check the box beside Uninstall SiteAdvisor.
    Click Continue.
Enter your admin password and click OK.
    Click Finish.
It appears from this that McAfee has an uninstaller.  For much software there is no installer and removing it simply involves finding it in the Applications folder and dragging it to the Trash.  Yes, this can leave some small files in Library but they are normally not an issue.

  • My Sony mp3 player synced with my iphoto. How do I unsync it? It no longer shows up as a device in my Finder window.

I plugged my Sony mp3 player into my mac mini, Snow Leopard, and it synced with my iphoto. Now it does not show up as a device anywhere, not even iphoto. When I plug in the mp3 via its usb, it opens iphoto. How do I stop this and get it back as a device in my Finder window so I can load songs on it again.

Turns out my Mac put code on the mp3 player because after I reset the mp3 player to its 'factory settings', (erasing everything) it went back to normal and now shows up in the finder window.

  • How to restore iphone/ipod icon in Finder window?

I accidentally deleted my ipod icon a while back and now can't seem to restore the icon in the finder window even with my new iphone.  How can I restore this? I can find the files on the ipod and iphone in other applications (ie. itunes and iphoto) but just not in the finder.
    Thank you.

You can restore the iPod icon by doing a "reset home screen layout" on the Iphone. Go to Settings ->General -> Reset -> Reset Home Screen Layout. It will come back

  • How do I re-install Mountain Lion on a new hard drive (replacement)?

I have an older iMac 24" (2007) that has been up-graded to Mountain lion.  I want to replace my hard drive with a bigger one (has 500Gb).  How can I re-install Mountain Lion on my new drive?  I have Time Machine on this machine.

Install 10.6 and 10.8 onto the new drive exactly how you did it on the old drive, except that you won't need to pay to redownload 10.8. Alternatively, if you kept a copy of the 10.8 installer, you can just rerun it.

  • How can I resize partition? - New larger hard drive installed

    Hello,
The hard drive on my MacBook Pro recently died on me (just past my Apple Care warranty - lucky me).  I sent it to an authorised reseller/repair place and they installed a new hard drive for me - replacing my old 250GB with a nice new 500GB.  The problem is when they copied over the disk image from my previous hard drive they did not scale up the image (yeah, not so happy bout that).  Now I find myself with a 500GB hard drive with a 250GB partition called Macintosh HD and 250GB of unused/unusable space.  On top of that I'm just starting to get messages saying boot disk nearly full.  How can I resize the "Macintosh HD" partition to use the entire disk?  I've tried using disk utility, clicking on the main drive, going to the partition tab and dragging the Macintosh HD partition to use the entire disk but after a few seconds of a message saying "waiting for disk to reappear" it returns to the same 250GB size.  Running OSX 10.9.3.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks all!

See the tips in pounding's section on using Disk Utility:http://pondini.org/OSX/Home.html and you could also take the route of buying an external hard drive (a great idea of maintaining a backup), format that drive for Mac OS X Extended (Journaled), clone the startup disk to that drive, then boot from the external, erase and format the internal, then clone the external back to the internal partitioned as you want.

  • Issues with Portable External Hard Drive (500GB)

I recently purchased the 500GB Toshiba-branded external hard drive in blue from my local Wal-Mart. It has been working fine for the past few months, but when I plugged it into my computer this morning, it didn't light up the LED and I couldn't feel the disk drive spinning as normal.
I tried to call Toshiba support, but all they did was ask me if the cord was damaged (it's not, at least not in any obvious fashion), and then tell me that it's the drive itself and to start a warranty claim. When I asked about all the data I already have on there (all of my family pictures and my music collection), they basically said tough noogies, they can't do anything about it.
I am going to try and plug it in at home and see if it's just this computer, but it's worked fine on this computer dozens of times. Does anyone have any advice on where to find a cord that would work, or other possible solutions? I absolutely CAN'T lose the data that's on here.
Any help is much appreciated. Thank you in advance!
    Justin

    Hi
I too have an issue with my portable 500gb Toshiba hard drive. No LED lit up when plugged into the USB port (Ive tried them all). I have lots of data on there that I recently wanted backing up and uploaded from my laptop whilst that was being repaired. I too believe it may be the connector because it now seems a littel bit loose. Im no technogeek so can someone please advise how I remove the drive from the portable device and where I can get another case from...or even just retrieve the data and then get rid?
