How do I rename a hard drive that is suddenly invisible after the 10.9.2 update?
I am using a Mac Mini as a server for our office. I recently ran the system update to bring it to 10.9.2.
We have 2 firewire drives attached to the mini to store files ("Shared" stores our files and "Shared Backup!!" is a backup of "Shared").
Finder prefs are good – set to show all external and internal drives. I was able to turn on visibility for the drive named "Shared", but all efforts fail when I try to update the name of the "Shared Backup!!" drive.
I think it may have something to do with the name of the drive and/or the exclamation points. I'm close to erasing the drive and reformatting it, but would love another solution.
I've tried the SetFile command -
SetFile -a v /Volumes/Shared Backup!!
I get a number of "File Not Found" errors.
Any help would be appreciated.

You need to use backslashes in your Unix command for your drive name when you have spaces involved.
I think you might have to put backslashes after special characters too like the exclamation points. I'm not sure.
Example1:
SetFile -a v /Volumes/Shared\ Backup
Example2:
SetFile -a v /Volumes/Shared\ Backup\!\!

How do I Rename Mac Hard Drive with Home Folder Only?

I have a Macbook Pro with an SSD which has OSX Snow Leopard and my Applications, and the other hard drive has my Home Folder. I replaced the optical drive with the SSD.
The other hard drive has the standard name of 'Macintosh HD'. I need to change it to something without spaces in order to get some developer software to work (i.e., it can't have spaces in the workspace name, and now that my Home folder is on a drive that doesn't have OSX, it refers to it as '/Volumes/Macintosh HD/.../...'
I ran into a disaster by simply changing the 'Macintosh HD' name to 'MacintoshHD' - It prevented me from logging in and I had to use the OSX Install disk to use the command line to rename the hard drive back to 'Macintosh HD'. My guess is because my account was referencing a home folder location that no longer existed.
My question is how can I rename my hard drive with my Home Folder? Can I change the hard drive name, and then immediately change my Account to reference the new hard drive name (and thus the new location of my home folder), and then reboot? Will this work if I do this in this order? Or is there another way to handle this entirely?
I'm very hesitant to try this again as I don't want to have to go back and use the OSX install disk - my SSD took the place of the optical drive and I have to go and take it out, put it back in...etc.
Any help is appreciated.

Chicago29I don't have a setup to test this, but you might try the following:
Create a second "normal" admin account with its home folder on the boot drive, then log out of your regular account and log into the new one. From there you could rename the large hard drive, then go to System Preferences>Accounts, select the first account, then right-click>Advanced options to change its home directory path to match the new HD name. That way you're not changing the home folder path "in mid-air."
It's probably a good idea to keep a tiny "self-contained" admin account on the boot drive anyway, so you don't get locked out in the event of future trouble accessing the large disk. -

How to Identify Physical External Hard Drives that Show in Finder?
I have a number of firewire hard drives hooked up to my Mac Pro. The 800s are daisy chained together, as are the 400s. I have gone into System Profiler to see if their serial numbers show, but they don't. Is there a simple way of selecting one of the hard drives in the finder and seeing some clue or indicator of which hard drive it is in the stack of physical hard drives? Or, is it necessary to hook just one up at a time to see which it is in the finder? Is there some software that lets you identify a physical hard drive as a particular one in the finder?

Your balance should be accessible wherever you are signed into the account. My account's balance shows at the top left of the store's page on my computer's iTunes, and by logging in to view my account via the Store > View Account menu option (that option will only show after you've signed in). -

DaveIf the drive is hooked up to an 802.11n AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule, click here and follow the instructions. If it's hooked up to a different AirPort base station, you can't.
To access the PC's internal drive, click here and use the file sharing instructions. If there's no document for Mac OS X 10.5 and that Windows version, use the one for 10.4 instead.

How to recover data from an external hard drive that has lost half of the data I was storing in it
I am using a Lacie external hard drive to store my photos on. Every once in awhile it disappears from my screen. I have been able to bring it back by unplugging and re-plugging from the computer. Then I had to turn it off and on again. Finally, it lost about half the stored photos, and I couldn't recover them. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what I might do to fix this problem?

How to configure a continuous pulse generation that doesn't end after the VI exits with DAQmx?

I'm just learning the DAQmx and I have run into a problem.
With the legacy DAQ API I could configure a counter to create continuous pulses and
when I needed change the freq or duty cycle, I would just call the the configuration function
again. The pulses were generated even after I closed LV, so it was all in the hardware.
Now, with DAQmx api, it seems that this is not possible. I read a forum post saying that
LV will end the pulse generation after the VI exits. Is there a workaround for this?
I could ofcourse create a LV thread for this, but I liked the old one better
It was simpler and I didn't need to worry about threads so much.
All LV operations are going to be inside a DLL that is called from outside of LV, so I can't
use LV threads in a simple way, e.g. putting things inside a while loop. Just that you'll
know why I wan't to avoid using the threads.
Thanks.It is possible to achieve this behavior using the DAQmx API by using the DAQmx Create Task VI to explicitly create the task (rather than relying on DAQmx Create Channel to do it implicitly) and setting the AutoCleanup attribute to False. This method prevents LabVIEW from automatically clearing the task when your VI (or the function you'll be exporting to your C .dll) finishes executing. The disadvantage is that you might accidentally "leak" a task if you're not careful. In order to stop the pulse generation on command, you can either reset the device or somehow store the task name you created and come back later to call DAQmx Stop and/or Clear Task.

My external backup drive will not mount. I have tried to mount it in Disk Utility via the app and the command prompt but the attempt times out. Any suggestions?
I backed up my HD the day before dropping off my Mac for repair, and then tried again just before going to my appointment. During this last and final backup my Macbook Air crashed. I have since discovered that the drive will no longer mount, likely due to the crash that occured during the last attempted backup. I am unsure if the drive can be repaired.
My logic board was short circuiting some where that controls the headphone jack. Initially this prevented me from using the jack but eventually caused my mac to crash several times before I brought it in for repair. I believe that it is the this crashing that is responsible for my back up not being accessible but that my data may still be intact.
Thanks for any help you may have!If possible, attach it to another Mac and see if it is recognized in Disk Utility. If so, run Disk Utility>First Aid. If not, the HDD may be damaged.

How can I recover a hard drive that Disk Utility won't even see?
I've done it before using a floppy boot disk in a PC containing something called kern and msfroot (some minimal linux installation, possibly), just wondering if there's some magic unix command that does the same thing on a Mac. The drive will be in an external firewire case. Is this something I have to do in single user mode?

non fatal failures of a drive will often make the FW bridge ignore it.

Pros:
Awesome access times (<1ms vs >10ms); shaved my start-up time by 17 seconds, loads Safari in <1 second vs 4.9.
Absolutely silent; no vibration; don't have to worry about moving or bumping your laptop.
Cons:
Expensive.
Slower data transfer speed than that of an HDD. (I don't notice a difference, I actually think it's just as fast)
Not supposed to last as long as traditional HDDs. (Different architectures of the flash memory are more or less durable)
Other notes:
Doesn't seem to improve battery life as had been suggested by manufacturer/retailer. -

On my iBook G4 I have a hard drive that no longer mounts after an unsuccessful attempt to update to Leopard. What I need to know is if I am able to extract any data from the drive, what files do I need to save my iPhotos an iTunes data. Everything else on the drive is replaceable. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!
For iPhoto you want the iPhoto Library which by default is in the pictures folder - you want to drag it as a single entity to a new drive (do not move it in pieces)

I have been storing my Aperture and IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive that recently died. Fortunately I've been using Time Machine to back up to a 2nd external drive. How do I restore my libraries to a new external hard drive?
This is a tricky one.
Open up Time Machine and go back to a date using the timeline on the right side of the window when you know the drive was working and was backing up as part of Time Machine backups.
Click on the name of your Mac under the Devices heading on the left side of the window in Time Machine, and if things are working correctly you will see Macintosh HD (or whatever you have named it) and the name of the external hard drive that was backing up in the past.
Right-Click on the name of the external hard drive and then click on "Restore (name of drive) to....." You may be asked for your adminstrator password at this point.
It might be easier to restore the drive contents to your desktop if you have room on your Mac, and then copy things over to the new external drive where you want to store the Aperture and iMovie Libraries.
Once the libraries have been moved over the new external hard drive, you will likely need to "point" Aperture and iMovie to the location of the libraries on the new external hard drive.
