How do I replace Aperture Keywords?

My keyword list was getting to be a mess, so I exported the thing out and used TextWrangler to create a new hierarchical list.
The problem is that I don't know how to replace my old mess with the new text file. I tried using Import, but that just my new file to the existing mess. How do I remove the old stuff and then Import my new list using Aperture 2.1?

If you remove an item from the Keyword list it will be removed from all items in your library (or at least APerture should ask you if you want it that way)
if you move a keyword or rename it, it will also apply that change to all photos with that keyword.
And if you have two keywords which are the same, but are at different hierarchical places and you move one to the same place as the other, Aperture will ask you if you wish to combine them and then apply those changes tot he appropriate images.
you should be able to use these function i an effective way to reorganize your list all.

  • How to completely replace iPhoto with Aperture

    I would love to use Aperture for all my image-handling, but it seems iPhoto is hard-coded into the OS X workflow. For instance, when right-clicking images on the web, there's the possibility to save to iPhoto. Same thing thing when doing a slideshow in Preview, there's an option to add pictures directly to iPhoto.
    Does anyone here know how to completely replace iPhoto with Aperture?
    Thanks
    (ps: did search in the forum here, but couldn't find anything about this)

    Hi, you seem to be right, although I've never used that myself, it made me go off and test it myself.
    However, you can use the 'save image to <my-downloads-folder>' feature, and then import the images into Aperture. Which is what I've been doing anyway. It's a two step process for sure, but it'll work.
    I'm very much like you, and trying to swap from iPhoto to Aperture. I have to say that I haven't actually run iPhoto since I got Aperture though.

  • How can I remove one keyword, or replace?

    I have added one particular keyword to a group (000's) of images (each of those photos have multiple keywords associated with them), and it turns out I need to delete that one keyword. I use the same keyword correctly in lots of other images.
    I am sure there is a very easy way to do this I am overlooking...if someone could point me in the right direction that would be great.
    Also, is there a quick way to take a group of images that have the same keyword and replace that keyword with a different one (ie replace 'Surgeon' with 'Doctor' for a large group of selected images, but leave 'Doctor' as a keyword for another group of images in the library)?
    Thanks!

    If you delete or rename a keyword then it affects the whole library, so that will not solve your problem.
    If you have a way of selecting all of the images with the wrong keyword (or all the images with the keyword correctly applied) then there is a way.
    Create a keyword set called Mistake and add the keyword to that set. Display that keyword set at the bottom of the screen. Now select all of the images that have that wrong keyword and Shift click the button with that keyword at the bottom of the screen. That will remove the keyword from those images.

  • What is the best photo editing software to replace aperture

    Because Apple has decided to no longer develop Aperture, what are the best valued, most capable programs to replace Aperture?

    Regarding the "ship shape" comment: you might want to look at some other products just to see how they would handle importing images. There is a lot of chatter on that subject for obvious reasons. What you don't want is all your info being stuck in a format that is difficult to retrieve.
    First, consider referenced photos instead of the library. The managed library of Aperture/iPhoto is pretty unique to Apple. Sure, things like Lightroom's Aperture importer will copy those photos out for you, but it's a work around. If you have a photo structure in the Finder, it's always available no matter what you use, DAM or browser or just Spotlight.
    Second, consider preserving your photo adjustments. Think of them as printed pictures. The adjustments (except really simple stuff like maybe crops, etc) do not carry over to other image managing  programs per se; the way to preserve those adjustments is to export the photo as adjusted, say in a TIFF. That's what you may have noticed that plugins like Nik do: they don't pass adjustment INFO to Aperture, they pass an exported photo. Consider a workflow that does the same. Even if the new Apple products or whatever comes next is what you wanna use, it may be useful to have these. Some of the cool adjustments demo'd in Photos might translate exactly from your Aperture info, but maybe not. You might have to start anew, and having at least an exemplar might be nice.
    Third, make your photos application independent by writing in metadata. The cool thing about image files is that even your garage door opener can probably open them. They are really universal. AND so is the exif/IPTC/XMP metadata within those files or sidecars. So write it in there. You can replicate a whole Project/folder/album or collection set/collection just using heirarchical keywords. And another cool thing is that this info is available in the Finder, in other operating systems, and with searches via Spotlight. It's tremendously powerful and many Aperture and Lightroom users, who often are solo users, don't make enough use of it. Those who worked with other people/departments etc probably use this more often; Photo Mechanic is the epitome of this. Metadata in photos is far more powerful than even tags in the operating system; it's like a DAM grafted into your files.

  • Iphoto keywords versus Aperture keywords

    I was happy to succesfully import my iPhoto library. But surprised that the keywords were distinct from Aperture keywords. That is, I have a keyword "Birds" in iPhoto, but when I go and add the keyword "Birds" (by typing it in the box) to a new photo, I now have two keywords, "Birds" and "Birds (iphoto)" which are distinct. I want them to be the same. How do I do that?

    As DaveyJ pointed out, the iPhoto keywords are in a sub-level.
    Your best course of action (this will take a while) is to create a smart album and set it to show all images with one of the keywords in the iPhoto group/level.
    Once Aperture shows you the applicable set of images, use the Keywords Control bar to add the non-iPhoto version of the keyword to all of the images; i.e., Select All, then click the keyword. With all of the images still selected, use the Keyboard Controls bar again and shift-click on the iPhoto version of the keyword. This will remove it from the selected images.
    You could write an AppleScript to help with this process. I've been experimenting and it can be done. You would use a Smart Album to gather the iPhoto keyword images together and then run the script to remove the iPhoto keyword and add the non-iPhoto keyword.
    Here's an example script (that works) to get you started:
    tell application "Aperture"
    -- set the target to the "Smart beetles" album at the top level of the library.
    tell album "Smart beetles" of folder ""
    -- get a list of the images in the album.
    set x to every image version
    -- move through the images one by one, deleting and creating the appropriate keywords
    repeat with i from 1 to x's length
    tell x's item i
    -- Note. if the keyword is top level, then the parents value is "".
    delete (every keyword whose name is "Australia" and parents is "Location")
    make new keyword with properties {name:"Sydney", parents:"Location"}
    end tell
    end repeat
    end tell
    end tell

  • Aperture Keywords VS IPTC keywords

    The Aperture manual says:
    Important: If you are planning to export your keywords as IPTC data, make sure your keyword phrases are no more than 64 characters in length. Longer keyword phrases may not be displayed properly in other IPTC editors or operating systems.
    OK. But how do I export my Aperture Keywords to IPTC data????
    Thanks
    Marion

    I copied the text shown below from the online manual.
    *Applying IPTC Metadata and Keywords to Your Images*
    <SNIP> You can apply these keywords to your images when
    exporting to JPEG, TIFF, and PSD file formats. <SNIP>
    To include metadata with images at export:
    1 Select the image or images you want to export.
    2 Choose File > Export > Versions (or press Command-Shift-E).
    3 Navigate to the location where you want the exported images placed.
    4 Choose Edit from the Export Preset pop-up menu.
    5 In the Export Presets dialog, select the export preset you want to use to export
    your images.
    6 Select the Include Metadata checkbox.
    7 Click OK.
    8 Choose a name format for your exported files from the Name Format pop-up menu.
    9 Click Export Versions.
    I am ok for steps 1,2,3. But, after I navigate to the folder, I don't see where I can "choose edit from an Export Preset Pop-up Menu"
    I don't have an Export preset Pop-up Menu....
    Is it on the file navigation window? Or the main Aperture pull-down menu?
    Thanks

  • How to locate photos using keywords in sub-categories?

    Is there a way to locate your photos according to the sub-categories in keywords, such as under "animals" I have "wild" and "domestic"? When I search for them with the inspector, I only can access the main category.
    Message was edited by: Host <to clarify subject>

    How are you searching for keywords? I mean, when you say you search for them with the inspector, are you referring to, under the "Library" tab in the left pane, the search field right at the top of that list, or the search field at the top of your "Keywords" HUD?
    When I try to search keywords using the keyword HUD, it hangs for several minutes between each keystroke until I finally give up. (I have a lot of keywords - I used Keyword Manager in iPhoto, and the conversion to Aperture didn't preserve the hierarchy, only the list.)

  • How to catalog  with Aperture

    Im new to Aperture, I got it because I ws told that it was great for cataloging photos. I Im about to import my first batch. Is there any tutorials on how to import and catalog correctly. Im trying to do this correctly and not have duplicates all over the place.

    I've been using Aperture since January and the best suggestion I can offer you is to import a couple of small batches first and experiment with the cataloguing feature. There are a number of ways in which you can organise your photographs and what works for one person may not be suitable for another.
    Read the help file and find out about how Aperture organises files, specifically with respect to Folders, Projects and Albums.
    Also think about how you want to apply keywords to photographs. It may seem a ball ache to begin with but developing a good keyword hierarchy will save you loads of time in the future by being able to search your photo library using targeted search terms instead of having to look though each file in turn trying to find the one your after.
    Lastly, I recommend the use of ratings as well because not every shot you take will be superb, absolutely in-focus and perfect. For me ratings enable me to decide quickly which shots I think are the best out of a particular shoot and so makes it easier to find in the future.
    Apparently (I say apparently because I've not bought it myself, but I've seen many recommendations for it) there's an excellent book in the Pro-Training Series for Aperture that's well worth a look, however the currently available edition is based on Aperture 1.5.6. There is a new edition targeted at Aperture 2.0 on Amazon but it's not available yet.
    Overall though, the best way to learn what works for you is to experiment with the features, understand how they work and then you can develop a structure and a workflow that makes sense.
    Hope this helps,
    Regards,
    Jason

  • Aperture Keyword inconcistency

    Aperture Keyword Inconsistency
    All photos were migrated from iPhoto to Aperture because Apple insisted iPhoto database not as stable as Aperture.
    What I am trying to understand…
    If the Keyword Hud shows as Flowers …. 1,000
    If I select Photos at the top left I am told that includes all photo's in the data base.
    In Filter: Photos … Flowers entered
    The filter finds only 900 Flowers
    Where are the other 100?
    How do I resole this.
    This is the first of several Keyword mysteries. Hoping this answer will unlock a solution
    to the others.
    Thanks in advance for any kind help.

    Frank Caggiano and Badunit … Thanks guys for the help.
    Why use Filter: Text rather than Filter: Keyword
    Started out that way. When several keywords in HUD were not represented in Filter: Keyword, I thought of using the text w/ copy/paste for exact duplication.
    Kirby, Can't thank enough for hanging with me.
    Stacks .. After manually checking and opening the few I saw in Library > Photos, all photos not unstacked, I unstacked them. Then did: Menu Bar > Stacks > Open All Stacks.  Open All Stacks menu selection appears dimmed. Close All Stacks shows un-dimmed.
    Trash Items .. Rejected, great tip. I have just trashed stuff and not emptied trash till I could get around to verifying I'm not deleting something valuable. I have found good stuff, though infrequently, in the trash. It has just mushroomed.
    Graphics clearly depicts what I was clarifying just below. Again, nice graphic!
    From our "trash" discussion: Keywords in trash add to active image keywords to make the total in Keyword HUD. ie: 50 Flowers in "Photos", 10 Flowers in Trash … Keyword HUD shows 60? A text search would reveal only the 50 in "Photos"
    So:  when I put all trash into a new Project and Check for exact numbers… I should get super close. GREAT IDEA!
    Kirby, not two rules at once. See note at top to Frank and Badnit. Text rather than Keyword because that Keyword does not appear in the Filter: Photo > Keyword > include all of the following .. list of keywords. Nice graphic! Using the Filter Trash will give me equally another way to investigate
    Once I get the numbers understood and in line, then I want to address why a few keywords appear in the HUD but can not be seen in any of the ways I've tried to uncover them. I bet I find them in trash. Several HUD Keyworfd that show 0 … when I go to delete the Keyword I get a Warning: 6 photos have this keyword .. Or something quite similar. Others showing 0 stay 3 versions have this Keyword.
    I have gone over the Filter rules in the manual and parameters. It does bear way more careful review, which I will do.
    I will: Look at images in Trash via the graphic example & document findings … Take images out of Trash to new Project then see if numbers come into line and document … Report results here.
    Review Filter rules and parameters.
    Great, Great ideas, suggestion and help!!! I'll be back.
    Owww, a PS: By way of qualifying accuracy. I have searched everywhere for a discussion on … Unstack versus open stack. Nothing I looked for answered this. I totally believe they are the same thing ... yet the to commands appear at opposite ends of the Stacks menu selection.

    How do I replace someone else's Mac ID with my own?
    Bought iPhone second hand on TradeMe.
    Previous owner re-set the phone but his ICloud account stayed on now my phone. He uses his AppleID on his new iPhone now and, understandably, does not want to give me his password. Any ideas?? Please.
    This issue is blocking my access to iTunes and any other file from my home computer. It keeps on telling me that I have to autorise my computer to pass on files, yet, it seems, for all this to happen, I need to get logged in through the phone's Apple ID. This of course is different to my one on my computer - and I have no password for it.
    This phone is not stolen!! I payed still a fair bit for it. Am still in contact with the previous owner. He doesn't know how to fix the problem either.
    Would appreciate any suggestion ????
    Thanks

    Settings>general>resets>erase all content and settings.
    That will put it back to its out of the box state. Set it up with your own apple Id.

    You can probably change the ID in the "iTunes and App stores" settings on the iPad....click on the wrong account ID , select sign out, then log in with your own ID, I have not done this but I think it works.....
    but I would be more inclined to to the factory reset and start afresh.

    Hi,
    I'm not sure if I understood what are you trying to do. But you can modify your table in a backing bean code. JSF page code for a table:
    <af:table id="product_search_results_tbl" binding="#{backingBean.boundTable}" ... />
    And a backing bean code:
    import oracle.adf.view.faces.component.core.data.CoreTable;
    public class YourBackingBean {
        private CoreTable boundTable;
        public void setBoundTable(CoreTable boundTable) {
            this.boundTable = boundTable;
        public CoreTable getBoundTable() {
            return boundTable;
       public String insertButtonAction() {
          // Bind your button action to this method and modify here your bound table
         return null;
    {code}
    Look for column modification methods in a CoreTable class documentation.
