How do I run system recovery dvd from an external dvd drive?

I am having trouble trying to restore my DV 6000 (dv6915nr) from an external dvd drive.  I am aware that this laptop has had several hardware issues, including the loss of use of the internal dvd drive and have tried all the fixes that I could find, including changing filter settings in the registry, changinging the boot order in the bios and even removing the intenal drive.  Since none of these fixes worked, I removed the hard drive and installed window 7 Prodessional in a desktop computer.  After reinstalling drive in laptop, I installed all the Vista drivers from HP.  Computer works fine except for sound card and Nic that failed and have been replaced by USB devices.  Simce I am not 100% sure the hardware failures are motherboard failures and not software, I would really like to run my System Restore DVDs that I purchased from HP.  And that's where I need help.
I am A Plus and Network Plus certified, so I am pretty sure  that I have tried all the obvious soutions.  Evedrything turned on, checked the cables, accessed dvd in wimdows and even ran restore disk in a desktop machine to the point that it told me I was trying to restore the wong computer.  I downloaded a program called Win To Flash that allows you to copy a setup disk to an external hard drive, but that didn't work.  HP restore disk does not have  Setup file on it, so it wouldn't copy to drive.  Tried just copying the disk to external and that didn't work either.  Also tried switching drive letters D and E without any success.
Bios choices are:
USb floppy
ATAPI cd/dvd rom drive
USB diskette on key
Notebook Hard drive
Network Adapter
Original restore partition is long gone.
I would rather restore it with an external Hard drive, not an USB memory stick.  I think both would work the same.  I do have an USB floppy drive, if there is some way of starting installation from floppies.
Like I said, I really like the computer, even with all its faults, but I would like to restore it to its original  Operating System.

Some progress, I got it to try to boot from an external hard drive.  Downloaded a program called WINToboot. tried to run it, got as far as formatting my  hard drive and might have loaded some kind of boot program.  Would not copy my restore disks because they did not have set up program.  Copied both restore disks to hard drive and tried to boot laptop.  F0 produced choose external hard drive choice.  Got "no OS found" error. only choice ctl alt del. I think I am headed in right direction.  Just need to know what to load on external hard drive.

  • Problems booti and install Tiger on a G4 running 9.2.2 from an external DVD

G4 PCI powermac, just a cd drive built in, running 9.2, sees external iomega dvd drive, reads dvds, cds, but when I try loading tiger from a dvd there are problems.
I puu the tiger disc in, click on install, then get a message that startup disc cannot set this drive as the startup disc (or similar). Restarting and holding the c key doesn't work- I get blinking question mark and have to disconnect the iomega drive, put the 9.2 cd in the internal drive and restart again holding down c key to get anything. Then, running from the cd I can reset the startup disc to the hard drive. Neither can I install tiger running 9.2 from the internal cd, with the tiger DVD in the Iomega drive- it sees it, but requires that the tiger install disc be the startup drive, and we go around again if I try that.
Q- is this possible, ie to load tiger on a PCI 400mhz powermac from an external DVD drive? has anyone done it? how?
    Thank you.
by the way, PCI 400mhz powermac- doesn't need firmware updating, can't be put into target mode, can't boot from a firewire device (and I have tried, just in case)

Joe, thank you very much for your post. The PCI G4 won't boot from an external USB dvd drive. Part of the apple support site says it will, another part says it won't. It won't. And it's well documented that the PCI G4 won't boot from a firewire device, neither can one put it into target mode.
The method Joe suggests does work. I arrived at it independantly, with this method- I ran 9.2 from a CD and partitioned the internal hard drive 10GB dive, ended up with two 5GB partitions. then installed 9.2 on one partition.
    Restarted and I'm running 9.2.
Then copied the Tiger install dvd from an external dvd rom, just a normal drag n drop copy, while running 9.2 (you can't do this under OS X) Then set the startup disc as the partition with the OS X install files on it.
(I copied the Tiger files ontot he partition that wasn't running 9.2)
Pressed restart, a long wait and then it sprang into life and installed OSX on the other partition, but without asking if I wanted a clean install- it just installed it alongside the 9.2 system folder.
I had to specify no extras, it prompted for that, via a message that said free space was tight.
All went well and it's running 10.4.4
Problems that have arisen- 1. won't update the system. Downloads the files via software update, then says it can't use them. The update dmg files from the apple site won't work either.
    2. won't shut down properly- goes to a blue screen, then stays there- I have to unplug it every time.
    Otherwise ok.
prior to working this out out, I visited the local apple store- no cd copies of tiger, exchange program withdrawn. Suggested I call apple. Did so, was directed to technical support. Technical support, very nice guy but knew zero about this.
this is really a bit of fun for me, I have other macs, so no worries, but if anyone has a copy of Tiger on CD, I'd really like to borrow it.
    Thanks everyone
    Mike

Encryption is optional. The volume must be on a local storage device, not on the network, and it must be mounted automatically at startup — before any user logs in. A disk image will not work.

    5. Select
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Users & Groups
Click the lock icon and authenticate. Right-click or control-click your name in the account list, and select Advanced options from the popup menu. In the sheet that opens, change the location of the home directory. Log out and log back in.
    6. Test. If you have problems, reverse the above steps. If you got this far, you should have no trouble doing that. If everything works as you expect, delete the original home folder.

  • How do I run system recovery?

    Hi,
Anyone know how to run system recovery? My machine is: Toshiba Satellite L300D.
I have tried "the hold down power button for 10 seconds and then press and hold zero keys" ( Http://www.toshiba.com.au => Home>>Support>>FAQ>>How do I rum System Recovery? ) but I does not work.
After I release the 0 key it should come up the warning screen but what was show up is a blank black and at the top of the screen theres a blurry small words (fonts 2-3 maybe, I cant read it though).
    Thanks

    Hi,
Hold down the 0 (Zero) key, turn hte laptop on, then release the Zero key when the Toshiba logo appears.
If that doesnt work, go into the Windows boot menu by pressing F8 as soon as Windows starts booting, then go into the Recovery Options. You can also run Recoveyr from there (If its Vista).

Drag the libraries to it, launch each application with the Option key held down, and point them there. The iPhoto library needs to be stored on a drive, partition, or disk image formatted as Mac OS Extended.

  • Is it possible to boot to a Windows 7 install DVD from an external USB drive on current iMacs?

On the iMac I'm currently using, a mid-2007 24-inch, it's impossible to boot into a Windows install DVD from an external drive: I can hold down option on boot, and all my hard drives come up, but if the Windows disc is in my external DVD drive, it won't show up. I'll soon be upgrading to a late 2012 iMac, and I'd like to be able to install Windows 7 for a boot camp partition. Since that iMac has no built in drive, I'd like to know if using an external DVD drive will work on that model. I'd like to do that, seems easier than messing around with disk images. But we'll see...

You can use an external optical drive to install Windows without any problem with a Late 2012 iMac.
The reason that you couldn't install Windows from an external optical drive on the 2007 iMac is that it has got an internal SuperDrive, so Apple only allows you to use it to install Windows on your iMac

  • How can I delete items in trash from an external hard drive?

I have a Macbook Pro and have installed Paragon so that I can use an external hard drive on both my Mac and my PC.  But some files I deleted from my external hard drive (Seagate 3TB) while on my Mac can't be deleted from the recycle bin.
When I try to delete, the files just stay there.  When I do a secure empty, a message comes up saying the files are in use.  This has persisted for two days.  I have restarted the Mac, reconnected the drive, and also cheked the drive on my PC for errors and found none.  Of course, the files only appear in the trash when the drive is connected.  I ejected the drive properly each time, and didn't just unplug it from the Mac.
I have tried to do a secure empty with option and/or shift keys down, but I still get a message that the files are in use.  I tried a fix involving writing a command including the term "trash" (I don't have the full command at my fingertips) in Terminal in the Utilities application, and this did not work.  There appears to be a program called "Trashit" which might help, but my computer says it will not open under my security settings because the author of the program is not listed.
The files remaining in trash are part of an old iTunes library that I wanted fully deleted from my external hard drive and my trash.  It was a big file (over 200GB) and about 99% deleted and empltied.  Reformatting the drive should not be necessary, might not help, and would probably erase the drivers on the drive and ruin it anyway.
I'm wondering what is happening, and how I could fix it.  Many thanks for any advice, in advance.

I actually fixed this by plugging the drive into my PC, changing the settings to "show hidden files and folders," then finding the folder ".trashes" on the drive and deleting everything in there.  When the drive was plugged back into the Mac, the trash was empty as it should be.  (It was a very large folder I deleted, and a very small portion of the files were apparently corrupted.)  In case anyone else ever needs this fix, it works.  Good luck.

  • How do I move my iTunes library from my external hard drive back to my computer?

Just wondering how do I move my entire iTunes library from my external hard drive back to my computer? It was moved to an external hard drive a few years ago, and now I'm wondering how to move it back to my iMac to increase performance.
Where does it belong in the computer?
    Any suggestions?

The library itself is the /Home/Music/iTunes/ folder in its entirety. Did you also change where preference files were stored? Normally, they would be in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.

  • How do I access my iTunes media from an external hard drive?

I have a new MacBook Air and want to access my media files from an external drive. I previously had a MacBook Pro and had to move all media to an external drive because I ran out of space. I've tried launching iTunes, going to Preferences, going to the Advanced Tab and then moving the location to the external drive and got this question: Would you like iTunes to move and rename the files in your new iTunes Media folder to match the “Keep iTunes Media folder organized” preference? Should I say yes? If I say yes, will iTunes be able to automatically find my files on the external drive?

hey, basically i had the same problem as you. i had all of my itunes on an external hard drive and just bought a macbook pro, so here is what i was told to do....plug in the external hard drive to your MBA and then when you open itunes hold down the option button while you click and hold it down till you see a pop up window, it will ask you what library you want to use, click choose library and choose the itunes file that is on your external hard drive. and then all of your stuff will be in the itunes.
what i have seemed to run into though is, when the external hard drive isn't plugged in itunes won't open unless you choose another library or plug in the external hard drive. - my question is this, should i open another library on my macbook pro's internal hard drive so i can at least look at itunes when i don't have my external hard drive connected. my old macbook did this, it would point to another library on my macbook and i would still be able to see all of my media but couldn't play it without the external hooked up, is there a way to do this on lion?
i hope i was able to answer your question sam and hopefully can have my question answered too.
    thanks!
    - sorry sam, don't mean to hijack your thread but hopefully it will help us both - i don't want to store any media )movies, music, podcasts, apps, any of that stuff on my macbook pro's hard drive, so say there is a way to get itunes to open without my external hooked up and i can still see my media, or not see my media and i want to download a song or a app that i see when i am not near my external....what is the easiest way to get that file onto the external and not have it taking up space on my macbook pro's hard drive? sorry for all the long questions

  • Any suggestions for running an iTunes library from an external hard drive on two computers?

I have two Mac computers: an iMac and a MacBook Air.  My iMac has 1TB of storage space (plenty enough for my 200+gigs of music) but my MacBook Air only has 250gigs of storage space.  I know I can access all of the music from my iMac on my MBA with HomeSharing.  But that doesn't work when I take my MBA out of the house for work.  I was going to switch over my iTunes library to an external HD but I don't know if I can access the library on the hard drive from my MBA, when the main library is on my iMac.
Any suggestions as to how to get two different computers to access an iTunes library from an external hard drive?
    Thanks.

I am confused as to what you had or have where and when.  The bottom line is, your library (for the standard user) is everything in the iTunes folder.  As far as iTunes' organization and display is concerned, your library is a file called "iTunes Library.itl" which points to all the other host of files and folders normally in the iTunes folder which all work together.

Image of folder structure and explanation of different iTunes versions (turingtest2 post) - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-7392 and making an iTunes library portable.
If you kept everything together in one place then you need to put the whole iTunes folder on the drive where you want it, start iTunes while holding down the option key and guide it to that .itl file.  If things were split up and you had media on the external and the rest of the library on the internal you need to get them back to exactly where they were before.  If you can't find that iTunes folder holding the critical .itl file anywhere then you have a bunch of media tracks and no organization and will need to rebuild the organization from ground level.

  • How do I copy backed-up files from an external hard drive back to my MBA, but under a different user than the one from which they were backed up?

On the advice of the Chicago Mac Genius Bar, in order to get better performance on my few years old MBA, I copied my Home folders (but not Library) to an external hard drive, created a new user, deleted the old user, and tried to copy the Home folder contents from the external hard drive back to the MBA under the new user. However, I get an error message and can't open most of the folders on the external hard drive (e.g. "The folder “Desktop” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.") Help! Thanks.

As captfred says, yes (as long as the drive is formatted for a Mac, not Windoze).

  • Can I boot and install Tiger on a G4 running 9.2.2 from an external DVD

I have a Power Mac G4 (PCI Graphics) computer running OS 9.2.2. Firmware version I believe is 3.2.8. I purchased OS X Tiger DVD. I do not have a DVD drive on this Mac. I cannot seem to start up the Power Mac in Target mode via firewire. When I checked Apple website this Mac is not on list as able to be a target volume. Therefore, to avoid ordering CD's from Apple, I was hoping to buy an external DVD drive and use that to install from. Before I buy the new drive, I wanted to be sure this will work. Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
The PowerMac G4 PCI Graphics can't boot from Firewire.
It also can't run Target Disk Mode.
The AGP Graphics was the first one that could.
That's documented in the articles here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58606
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
Make doubly sure it is a PCI graphics by reading this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58418
The PCI graphics needs no firmware update.
But I would make sure you have at least a 20 GB hard drive and 512 MB of RAM before installing and following the specs for your machine when it comes to the RAM
