How do I update/install packages from a CD?

Hello,
I am new to Arch Linux. Kindly excuse me if this task is very trivial. I have installed the base system and updated it using pacman -Syu. I also installed all the other software packages using pacman -S <packagename>. Now I want to burn a CD containing all these updates and packages so that I can make a similar installation later on other systems which are not connected to the internet. I am not able to figure out how this can be done.
I need to upgrade the system and install all the packages I have on the CD by giving minimum number of commands at the command line. This helps me install Arch Linux on a large number of machines in a very short time.
Thanks for your help.

If you're talking about batch installing packages, the method you suggested
will work for every package in the current directory.

does anyone know the steps to update an ibase from crm product hierarchy?   Can the data from the product Hierarchy be replicated to the install base via config?
    any help would be appreciated????

    Hi Shannon,
no, it's a free update. The procedure goes like this:
    1. BACKUP!!!
    2. Unplug all peripherals but your original Apple keyboard and mouse
    3. Repair permissions before and after an update! (click the link and read it!)
    4. Download and apply the Mac OS X Update 10.3.9 (Combo)
    5. After the restart repair permissions again.
Do NOT use the computer during the update!!!

  • How to install packages from local folder

    Hi all,
I have downloaded all arch linux packages from the following URLs:
    ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/archlinux/core/os/i686/
    ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/archlinux/extra/os/i686/
    ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/archlinux/community/os/i686/
and then have saved them to an external hard disk. Then I have attached that external hard disk to my system and packages are available in following folders:
    /mnt/external_hd/Arch_Linux/Core-OS/
    /mnt/external_hd/Arch_Linux/Extra-OS-1/
    /mnt/external_hd/Arch_Linux/Extra-OS-2/
    /mnt/external_hd/Arch_Linux/Community-OS-1/
    /mnt/external_hd/Arch_Linux/Community-OS-2/
    /mnt/external_hd/Arch_Linux/Community-OS-3/
Now I want to install some or all packages from these folder with the help of pacman command. I am seeing that package corresponding to wvdial command is available in the /mnt/external_hd/Arch_Linux/Extra-OS-1/ folder. But how to use pacman command so that I can install wvdial package from that folder?
In addition to this if I want to install ALL Extra Packages available in the folders /mnt/external_hd/Arch_Linux/Extra-OS-1/ and /mnt/external_hd/Arch_Linux/Extra-OS-2/ then how to execute the pacman command?
Please send me step by step instructions so that I shall be able to install some or all downloaded packages.
I shall remain thankful for this forever.

    Hi fukawi2,
Thanks for reply and searching for my username on google. It is true that I am a freelance s/w developer but I am not installing Arch Linux for any client. I am installing it due to some other reasons. In fact I started working on Red Hat and then on Fedora when I was a student of bachelor degree course in computer applications. Then later I searched open suse and started using it. I am using open suse from its 10.1 version. However the recent version of this distribution has become much resource consuming. So I am in the need of a light weight linux distribution. And I encountered Arch Linux. Then I purchased its installation disk from an online shop and installed it on my system. But only text mode is working at this moment. Since I want to use X window and so I started to follow the syntax of pacman command. But it is connecting to internet. Since my internet connection is slow (average speed of 10kbps) and so I requested the same online shop to download all packages from Arch Linux repository and send them to me. Therefore now I am having all those packages in my local external hard disk drive in the folder mentioned in my first post. Now I want to install packages from these folder. And so in order to get help I have come to this forum.
I have also followed the steps given on the pages https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pa … l_commands and https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pa … repository. But when I am trying to install a particular package using the following command:
    pacman -U wvdial
then it is asking for a dependency. I know that  the dependent package in my local folder but why it is not being automatically taken by pacman command? Can you please explain it.
That is why I am asking help only for customization and usages of pacman in order to install packages from local folder. But each member in this forum is only referring to long written manuals and not giving me exact solution which I think will involve four/five steps.
    Best Regards ...

  • How to backup yaourt installed package?

    Hello,
I didn't if I installed package from aur, how can I backup before remove if I want install next time with pacman?
I seen mine package structure in /var/lib/pacman/local, but I don not understand where can I found   pkg.tar.xz fie?
    I wait for your answer.
    Thanks

If you built the package using yaourt, then it probably put the pkg.tar.xz in /tmp. If you've rebooted since building the package, then the .pkg.tar.xz has gone. You'll have to rebuild it if you want to reinstall it.
I suggest you use makepkg directly, rather than using an AUR helper to build packages, but if you insist on using yaourt, I believe you can change where it saves it's completed packages (or at least where it builds them).

  • How to make a ARCH package from local folder?

    hello ARCH lovers
I can't seem to figure out how to make a installable
package from a folder on my desktop?
Coming from Slackware; the procedure would be simple enough just issuing
    "makepkg /root/pkgname.txz"
Now; how would I do the same in ARCH?
I know about PKGBUILD, etc but there is no source or any url's
I just need to make it into a .pkg.tar.xz
The package is my "kernel-live-kit" for both x86 and x86_64 versions of arch
enabling one to remaster there existing install into a livecd/usb, etc
The kernel itself is kernel26-zen from AUR
    http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=30330
however; mine is quite different and also includes all components to make the livecd using modified linux-live-6.3.0
    scripts and special stuff
The pkg includes a premade kernel with modules and full kernel source
The resulting live media is similar to my nFluxOS builds
    http://multidistro.com/
As I will be releasing the new four horsemen of nFluxOS today; I also made 4 Kernel pkg's for the arch and slack versions
Those will be for x86/x86_64 versions for both arch and slackware
I did this in lieu of creating a quartet of x86_64 versions of nFluxOS; as that would up the number of versions to 8
and I would then have to maintain 8 distro's instead of 4.
I made a testing version of ARCH x86_64 live
    http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions … ost4017796
so, I really need to make the ARCH x86 and x86_64 kernel kits into installable pkg's because there are many symlinks that would get corrupted if I just tarred it and then the end user untars it and copies it somewhere it would mess up the symlinks.
as I said, in slackware I do makepkg and it creates a script named "doinst.sh" that makes all the symlinks, etc
    so, any help appreciated!
    thanks

You can read a simple introduction to using the ABS here.
By the way, it's not hard. Out of all the distributions I've used, Arch Linux is the only one I've figured out how to make packages for.

  • Script to rebuild all installed packages from ABS

I realize pacbuilder is for that, but it doesn't seem to work properly for me. Skipping a lot of packages etc.
Anyway, I've made this very simple script to just rebuild every installed package from core/extra/community. Sorry for the localized echo output, but I think it's all very simple and straightforward to understand.
    Edit:
I've improved it a bit, now it should work flawlessly and remember what stuff it has to finish no matter when you ^C out of it. Also it installs all compiled packages, if you want to avoid that, remove -i switch from makepkg.

my  ipod touch is 3rd gen how can i update my ios from 4.2.1 to 5.1.1 when i shift + restore and load the ipod3_5.1.1.ios its always say your firmware is not compatible

I suspect you have a 2G iPod. Those can only go to iOS 4.2.1.
    Identifying iPod models
    iPod touch (3rd generation)
iPod touch (3rd generation) features a 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen multi-touch display and 32 GB or 64 GB flash drive. You can browse the web with Safari and watch YouTube videos with Wi-Fi. You can also search, preview, and buy songs from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store on iPod touch.
The iPod touch (3rd generation) can be distinguished from iPod touch (2nd generation) by looking at the back of the device. In the text below the engraving, look for the model number. iPod touch (2nd generation) is model A1288, and iPod touch (3rd generation) is model A1318.

  • How do i update Installed AIR Applications? // General Questions

    Hi,
first of all, i'm completly new to AIR. However, i made my way through your product documentation and i'm now able to deploy AIR and a AIR Application (SFDC Chatter) and register it.
Works fine so far, but some questions:
    - How can i update installed AIR applications? If i just try to re-install it, the installer will fail with exit code "9"
-> How can i update them directly? If this is not possible
-> How can i uninstall AIR applications in a large enterprise environment?
    - Where is the ARH Tool that is described in your product documentation?
    - When installing AIR as SYSTEM User (I'm using SCCM) where is the logfile?
    - Do you recommend updating AIR on a regular base? Are "older" applications compatible with newer AIR Versions?
    Thanks for your replies!
    Ben

    Hi Ben,
I'd recommend taking a good look at our captive runtime option that is available in AIR 3.0 and higher.  While you have to roll your own installer (and updater) this could be as simple as a zip/batch file combination.  It also allows you to use the runtime that you prefer and not be dependent on what the user installs or uninstalls.  You do have to be mindful of security implications, but it's definitely the way I'd go.

    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/air/build/WSfffb011ac560372f709e16db131e43659b9-8000.html
As for updating, it should be as simple as increasing your app descriptors version number and installing again.  This article explains how you can also use our update framework: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/air/articles/air_update_framework.html
The ARH tool can be found here:

  • How to open or install fonts from a .suit file under Lion?

How to open or install fonts from a .suit file under Lion? Thanks!

although I believe I *have* used the .suit extension when I was creating suitcase files for TrueType fonts.
You can get away with that because you haven't really changed anything. It's already a suitcase file, with a Type code of FFIL (the Creator code is mostly irrelevant). Adding .suit still tells the OS it's a suitcase.
However, if you do something silly like change the Type code to LWFN (the outline portion of a PST1 set), then neither Font Book, or any other font manager knows what to do with it. It's recognizing the LWFN code, but the data structure of course doesn't match. The file is still a Mac legacy TrueType font. Suitcase Fusion 5 tosses this on the screen when I change the Type code to the wrong one:
Changing the extension to something obviously wrong, like .otf produces the same message. It's trying to parse the data according to what the extension says it is, and nothing lines up.
Trying to use .ttf or .ttc also doesn't work. A Mac legacy suitcase TrueType font is not built the same as a .ttf or .ttc font. Either is technically correct (it is a TrueType font), but that's the only similarity. What's happening in that case is Mac legacy TT fonts have all of the data in the resource fork. When you add .ttf or .ttc to the name, the OS and any font manager then tries to find the data in the data fork. Nothing there.

The ipod is not a storage/backup device. The sync is one way - computer to ipod.  The only exception is itunes purchases:  File>Devices>Transfer Purchases
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.  Use your backup copy to put everything on your new computer.

  • How to install packages from removable media?

I'm pretty damn sure that i missed some wiki page, but i cannot find it, how do i install packages without an internet connection. I installed on one of my computers, then realized i needed to install the wireless drivers after the install, which i cannot. I can ofcourse reinstall, but i believe there must be a possibility to make pacman install a bunch of packages from USB or a cd. I do have internet at my other computer, so i can download the packages there onto a usb-stick.

    Hi,
    you should try
    pacman -U /path/to/package.pkg.tar.gz
I haven't tried this but that's the way one would manually install a package build with PKGBUILD and "made" with makepkg.
    Hope that helps.
