How do i upgrade my iMac to two TB hard drive start to finish?

How do I upgrade my Imac to two TB hard drive start to finish?

Those are definitely good drives. The OP lists his iMac as a 2011 unit, so it should have a Thunderbolt port on it. If money isn't an object, he could probably put together a RAID unit using Thunderbolt. I think OWC is selling an Thunderbolt hub of some sort. He could do all this, get good performance, and not even need to bother cracking the case. It's a lot easier and convenient working on an external drive than it is having to service an internal drive. He just needs to steer clear of some of the low power/backup drives.
Just my two cents, of course.

  • How should I format and partition my two new hard drives in a 2010 MBP?

My good old mid-2010 13" MBP just lost its stock hard drive. I've decided to keep the laptop, set aside the defunct drive for future data recovery and pop two new drives in the computer along with a 8GB ram upgrade (two 4g ddr3 chips).
The two drives I'm working with now are a 256GB Crucial MX100 SSD (intended for my OS and startup) and an HGST 1TB Travelstar (for apps and storage) that I'm popping into the optical bay [via conversion tray].
I'm putting everything together myself then taking the build to tekserve (or the apple store? which should I go to for OS re-install and formatting help? ) to re-install my original OS (snow leopard) or mountain lion. i cant find my recovery disks and also can't download mountain lion on another comp. to boot my laptop build with.
Is it okay to just throw the drives in myself and let pros format them for me? I know i should be installing the OS myself but all of my workaround options are fleeting due to time constraints... gotta get my OG setup up and running.
    Thanks everyone.

    sageakash,
I have the same model MacBook Pro as you. If the 1 TB Travelstar HDD is a SATA III disk, then you might have trouble with it in the optical bay due to the connecting cable. To minimize problems, put a SATA II disk rather than a SATA III disk into the optical bay.
If you want your MacBook Pro’s original iLife apps to be installed on your new disks, then you’ll need to have Snow Leopard installed first, even if your target OS is Mountain Lion; they can’t be subsequently installed from the grey Applications Install DVD once a newer version of OS X is on your boot volume.
What is your concern with pros formatting your disks? What’s “OG”?

  • How to set up an iMac g3 with new hard drive

I have an iMac g3 grafite se, the person before me forgot their admin password so I bought a new hard drive for it but I don't know how to re install the software I turned the iMac on and I just had a grey blank screen would really appreciate some help please I have an iMac software install disc which say Mac OS version 9.1, I have iMac applications cd, all 4 iMac software restore discs and they say Mac OS version 9.1 , 10.0.3 and a Mac OS X version 10.0.3

I have iMac applications cd, all 4 iMac software restore discs and they say Mac OS version 9.1 ,
Boot from the gray system restore disk marked "Disk 1" by inserting the disk and then restarting while holding the C key. It takes a couple of minutes to boot from a CD or DVD but, when complete, you will have access to an installer. I'd install OS9 first to see if the comptuer works.

  • How do I upgrade my iMac from OSX10.5.8 to Mountain Lion?

How do I upgrade my iMac from OSX10.5.8 to Mountain Lion? I'm guessing I have to first purchase Snow Leopard? Is there anyway to download or upgrade online?

First, determine how high you can upgrade.
SL requires an Intel processor and 1 GB RAM, though more RAM is better.
Lion requires Core2Duo processor and 2 GB RAM, though more RAM is better.
Mountain Lion has higher requirements: http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
Also review applications that do not work under Lion or ML to see if you will lose critical functionality: http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Research first, as too many have discovered only after the upgrade that things are lost to them.
You can buy SL or Lion from 1-800-MY-APPLE.  SL is a disk ($19 single disk license, $29 for 5-user license).  Lion will be a $19 download code to use in App Store that you get with SL.

And it is very easy to install in contrary to earlier system versions. Don't forget to do the Software updates for the system as  you might not get the latest version on the disc. Best is to download the 10.6.8 COMBO update (1 Gb) first before updating.

Back up your data, install at least another 1GB of RAM(you should install another 4GB) in the machine, click here, and read the entire page. Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC software such as Microsoft Office 2004; some other installed software may also be incompatible.

  • How do i back up my files from an intel core duo imac to an external hard drive?

    Hello
How do I back up my files from an intel core duo imac to an external hard drive?

Like you do with any other Mac*:

Note: if you have a CoreDuo, you can only upgrade up to 10.6.8.  Only Core2Duos and higher can go to 10.7 (Lion).

  • How much Ram can my Macbook use?  What Hard drive should I upgrade to?

    Hi Everyone.
I have a 2008 ish macBook with 4gb of Ram.  I use vmware Fusion to run Windows every day and I also use Aperture on a regular basis.
I'm looking to breath some life into this old machine and want to know how much ram the motherboard will support.  Here are the machine's specs.
    Hardware Overview:
      Model Name:          MacBook
      Model Identifier:          MacBook4,1
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:          2.4 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          1
      Total Number Of Cores:          2
      L2 Cache:          3 MB
      Memory:          4 GB
      Bus Speed:          800 MHz
      Boot ROM Version:          MB41.00C1.B00
How muck Ram will the machine support?
My Hard drive is also nearly full and I would like to upgrade to a 500gb drive.  Any suggestions on which drive to choose?
    Thanks!!

You can install up to 6 GBs of RAM. There are any number of good choices for a hard drive replacement. I suggest visiting OWC for information on pricing, makes, and models. They also provide video tutorials on how to replace a drive in MacBooks.
To prepare for the upcoming release of Lion I also suggest spending $29 to buy a Snow Leopard DVD and upgrade your OS.

  • How to manage two internal hard drives

I just got my new iMac 27" with two internal hard drives (256gb SSD and 1Tb). When I migrated from my old computer it moved everything to the SSD drive. Are there some instructions somewhere to manage this and move things to the proper drive and have the info show up in my PLACES section in finder?

When you get the 27"iMac with the SSD, OS X comes installed on the SSD; so the migration assistant would naturally move applications to the SSD, including the contents of your user folder.
If you want to copy or move files/folders to the 1TB SATA drive you can do this any time in the Finder. Just don't move the +/Applications, /Library, /System+ or /Users folders
Can't tell from your post what you want showing in Places, but you can put any folder in the Places section of the Finder - just drag the folder there and it will show up in Places. The items in Places are just references - you can add or delete them at any time; it doesn't affect the actual location of the folder(s).

  • Lost a 2 hard drives, have 7 k photos on a touch that I need to load on IMAC with a new hard drive, how do I do it.  Just never went from a Touch to iMac.  I have the cable hooked up and then what, I don't want to mess up,my last chance to save 7k pics!

Lost my hard drive and also an Ipad, but have 7 k photos on a Touch that I need to load on fixed IMAC with a new hard drive, how do I do it. (There were more photos than the 7k, but they were saved on other drives, thank goodness).  7K pohotos on the Touch are no where else, must be saved!  Just never went from a Touch to iMac.  I have the cable hooked up and then what, I don't want to mess up,my last chance to save 7k pics!  New Aperture and IPhoto on IMAC with no other photos loaded on the new hard drive yet.

I'd ask in the iTouch forum where there are more iTouch users there than here and they should know how to off load the photos.  It might take a 3rd party app.

  • I have so many photos I only have 1G of memory left.  How can I move the photos to my external hard drive that is connected to my iMac?

I have so many photos on my Mac I only have 1G of memory left.  How can I move the photos to the external hard drive that is plugged into my iMac.

1GB? It's a miracle your Mac is running at all!
This is our resident iPhoto guru, Terence Devlin's, advice:
You can move your iPhoto Library to an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • How do i copy my files from my external hard drive onto my imac

how do i copy my files from my external hard drive onto my imac

You should be able to 'migrate them' without having to do so during a reinstall, from an external drive. In some cases, you may be able to use TimeMachine software even if the drive had not been used as a backup.
The usual way, though, is to drag & drop copy from one to another (volume or folder) you created in there and have open. Or drag an item on top of the icon of a hard disk drive when it is mounted on the desktop. I'm used to working with open folders and windows, because that works best; and then see if I want to change how things look inside their destination. This helps should I later want to burn them to a DVD and have it correct. And I want to know where they are.
I had more links to some information about importing or migrating data into a Mac from an external, a week ago, but can't find them now. A few good links to pages, but I think I posted what I did find directly to answer someones question about it; and believe the info was in an Apple Support article about TimeMachine, near the lower part of the page with blue words with a disclosure triangle, so you could read more in that page. But I don't believe these two are correct in that TimeMachine (some versions) only allow wireless backup to a drive in a base station unit such as Apple sells, for this. The link I saw simply said how to work around not using the wireless stuff. Maybe it was a dated item, not in these?
See a main general portal to TimeMachine support,
    here: http://www.apple.com/support/timemachine/
Or basics that may not provide optional copy methods:
Mac Basics - Time Machine backs up your mac:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
Perhaps a search of Apple Support database (or even ASC discussions?) would yield ideas, and perhaps find what may work for the kind of files you want to copy, and where they can be found & used later. Are the files for specific applications? Or images, music, etc?
    Good luck & happy computing!

If you want to just disable the Server aspect, this should work for both Lion and Mountain Lion...
