How Do I Use My Apple LaserWriter IIg Ethernet with Snow Leopard?

How do I get my LaserWriter IIg ethernet printer to work with 10.6 Snow Leopard? Cannot seem to find the printer listed in any of the "add a printer" menus. The driver is listed as part of OS 10.6. If I need an IP Address, how do I find out what its IP Address is?

(OK, I am confused because the Apple LaserWriter IIg has a built-in ethernet card so for the past few years and until last Sunday (thru OS 10.5) I've simply run the ethernet cable through an Asante FriendlyNet Adapter that runs over to my Ethernet hub and everything has printed fine. Plus I was able to share the printer with other computers around the house. Maybe you are saying that internally the printer communicates to the ethernet card via AppleTalk?)
Unfortunately I cannot find my notes on what IP address I've been using the past few years. I came to the conclusion that I should use the ethernet address which I think is 192.168.0.3, but that hasn't worked. I also tried 192.168.0.1 and 0.0.0.0.
I am adding these using the LPD option in the Add Printer dialog box.
In each case, it adds the printer, I can send a job to the print queue but it doesn't send the job anywhere and keeps trying every 15 seconds.
Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated!
Bob

tried another cable (from a camera) with no joy. However after turning off TM and searching for the EHD and not finding it, I revisited Disk Utility and can 'see' it there. The bad news is that it says,

  • Can I use Palm Desktop 4.2.1 with Snow Leopard?

I had a Visor Pro, which unfortunately was stolen along with my Mac PowerBook G4.  I have ordered a new Mac laptop (MacBook Pro), but I am not going to be able to replace the Visor.
I want to be able to continue using the Palm Desktop application - I had version 4.2.1 for the Mac. I have 10 years of information in that program, I don't know one better and would like to continue to use it, Visor or no Visor.
    I have several questions:
Is Palm Desktop Version 4.2.1 for Mac compatible and will run on a MacBook Pro running Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard?
If I do a "migration assistant" to move my applications to the new computer from my backup harddrive, will the Palm program move over okay and be useable? Or,---
Do I have to install Palm Desktop from scratch?  If so, can I download Palm Desktop from the website - I cannot find a page anywhere on palm.com to download the program.  Does anyone have a link?
Or, is the Palm Desktop program that would work with Snow Leopard a different version than the 4.2.1 I have?  And if so, how do I upgrade/move my data from 4.2.1 to a newer version?
I don't need to be able to HotSync as I no longer have the Palm device.  I just want to be able to use the desktop software.
    Thanks for the help,
    Tara

    Tara,
I could have been you asking a very similar question, although I'm still not sure on the solution after some of the knowledgeable answers.
Like you, I have been using Palm Desktop to store 5 years of information, and I'm getting ready to buy the new iMac who reps tell me is probably not compatible with Palm Software anymore or will not and I should find other alternatives to store all my information.
For instance, I use Palm as my date book and To Do List which I find very convenient.  Apple reps told me I could try getting used to iCal for this which I have been doing lately to try & get used to it.
Then there are my addresses.  I also use Palm to store all my basic addresses (some with E-mail, some without).  It was recommended to me to just use the address book that comes with the iMac.  I've never used it but I can see in itself, it's easy to add addresses.  My computer consultant also told me that she could easily transfer the addresses from those on Palm to my Thunderbird which I use with Firefox.  So, if all my addresses were transferred from my Palm to Thunderbird, then I would just have them on Thunderbird, but I find it easier navigating them in Palm.
The last thing I use Palm for and the most important is under the menu of "Memos".  For each category, I have created an alphabetized subject, like computers, legal, passwords, shopping (about 30 topics) and when I want to save important information, I go to that category and write as much or as little as a reference.  I wondered "which" application I would use in order to create a similar way of looking up information on subjects.
I copied/pasted it all into a simple word document but that's not really made for what I want.
The last time I went to an Apple store and explained what I wanted -- they were the ones who suggested to use iMac addresses to store my Palm addresses, iCal to use as a new calendar and to do list, and finally an application (on the dock) called "E-mail" where I could do a similar thing as I did on my Palm by creating a series of categories, and when I click on it, a memo page comes up where I can type anything I want to related to that topic.  It was demonstrated to me, altho I forgot how she did it, but although it was not meant for a function like that, it's easily done as with the Palm.  I told my computer consultant this.
She was concerned that I may not be able to use my Thunderbird G-mail system if I have all my info in iMac applications.  Yet if the addresses are in Thunderbird as well, I can't see why that would interfer.
Anyway, today she sent me this link & question and I start reading about a "sync" application and I would have no problem.  They also mentioned software called Benno, but told me to try and use Apple apps first instead of having to go out and buy a whole new application to replace the functions of Palm.
Ideally, I would love to continue to use Palm Desktop as I'm using it on this desktop, but I'm  not clear if I can.  If I can't, what might be my best solution given what I wrote.  I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Trudijane

  • Does the Apple Hardware test come with Snow Leopard?

Does the Apple Hardware test come with my iMac 27" i7?
If so, how is this activated and is it used as a periodic test or only when a problem develops?
    Thanks

The Hardware Test will be on the Install DVD(s) that comes with your iMac. With the correct DVD inserted, (re)start the iMac while pressing & holding the "D" key to start into the HT. Run it anytime you want to check the hardware.

  • How can I restore mac pro back to original with snow leopard

I want to restore my macpro back to original, I dont have restore disk, just snow leopard disk. How can I do this?  Thanks

A nice phone call to Apple usually results in a replacement disk being sent to you.
I understand your intention is to give this computer away. If you were selling it, not having the original install disks dramatically lowers its value.

  • How I set up an RS232 serial fax modem with Snow Leopard

A few times each year I need to send a fax.  I don't have a fax machine.
My Macbook Pro does not have a phone input or built in modem but I have an old RS232 serial fax modem in perfect working order.
    I purchased a Pluggable PL2303 USB to RS232 adapter.
Here is how to install a serial fax modem on a Mac running Snow Leopard using this adapter.
    1. With the adapter disconnected, Install the Prolific driver for Snow Leopard found at http://plugable.com/drivers/prolific/
    2. Plug the adapter into a USB port.  You should get a window recognizing it and asking to set it up.
    3.  If you're not there, go to System Preferences and click on Network.  In Network, click on "USB Serial Controller D".  You will get a configuration section.
    4. In the drop-down under configuration, click on "Add configuration".  Name this configuration  what you like.  I named mine "fax modem".
    5. Click on the "Advanced" button near the bottom of the configuration section.  You will get a window with 5 tabs, labeled "Modem", "DNS", "WINS", "Proxies", and "PPP".   Click on "Modem".
    6.  Fill in the modem fields "Vendor", "Model" and "Dial Mode" using the field drop downs.  I found my Vendor, Zoom, in the drop down list but my model (56K faxmodem) was not in the Model drop down so I guessed and picked "Universal 115K".
I left the defaults - Dial Mode to "Wait for dial tone before dialing", Dialing to Tone and Sound to On, and "Enable error correction and compression in modem" checked.
Click OK.  Click Apply.  Close System Preferences.
    7. Adding the fax to Printers and Faxes in System Preferences cannot be done the usual way, by clicking the + sign.  Instead, the fax printer will be installed using the CUPS administrative tools as follows:
Open a browser and type "http://localhost:631/" (without the quotes) into the browser's address field.
This should bring up the CUPS (Common Unix Printing System) page.
    8. Click on the "Administration" tab. Under "Printers", click on "Add Printer" and log in to CUPS as your system administrator.
You will get the "Add Printer" screen.
    9. Under "Local Printers" select "Fax".  Then click "Continue". You will get the URI screen with the word "fax" in the "Connection" field.  Fill in the field so it looks like this:
    fax://dev/cu.usbserial
Then click "Continue".  You will get the name, description and location screen.
    10. Fill in the fields as indicated.  For name, I used "faxprinter". For Description, I  entered "fax modem".  For Location I entered "Serial Port".  I left "Share this Printer" unchecked.  When done, Click Continue.  You will get the PPD screen.
    11. Ignore the "Make" field.  Next to "Or Provide a PPD File", click on "Choose File".
    Navigate to boot disk (usually Macintosh HD)/ System / Library / Frameworks / ApplicationServices.framework / Versions / A / Frameworks / PrintCore.framework / Versions / A / Resources /     and choose the file "Fax.ppd".
    12. Click "Add Printer" and you are done.

Thanks for your detailled description of the faxmodem installation!
I've tried this with Mac OS X v10.8 Mountain Lion and it works fine.
I've to type "cupsctl WebInterface=yes" in terminal to see the interface.
Does anybody know, if send faxes are saved somewhere?

I tried that it stops in the middle and ejects the cd.Thank you again, been there too, lol.  This was my last place. I went to the store itsself and Apple told me computer is too old, I can replace the hard drive, but not there, I can't buy it from them, it's no longer available.  I would have to go to an outside source.  Is there a secondary battery? e.g like a watch battery?

  • How can I get iLife for an older macbook with Snow Leopard?

I have a 2008 macbook. I just got Snow Leopard and was told I don't have the specs to upgrade to Mountain Lion. When I upgraded, I lost my whole iLife suite (I think because it was actually just a trial or sample), but I can't buy the latest version of iLife because it requires Mountain Lion.
I feel like Apple is trying to force me into buying a new computer, which really *****! They should offer support to all of their users, not just the most up-to-date ones....The whole reason I originally switched to mac was so that I wouldn't have to buy a new computer every few years!
And before anyone suggests anything with disks, I don't have my original install disks. I'm living abroad and it was 5 years ago...
    Any suggestions?

If you are unsuccessful in obtaining replacement disks for your Macbook you can purchase an iLife 09 disk for a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com: iLife 09

In light of the Lightroom printing debacle when Leopard came on the scene, it would be really interesting to hear from others once they have experience of printing out of Lr onto Epson Stylus Photo printers under the new Snow Leopard OS; due out I believe on Friday.

FWIW, in response to the OPs inquiry-
I have updated from 10.5.8 on a MacBook Pro to 10.6. I have an Epson R2880 (previously an R2400) with the latest 6.57 driver. I am using LR 2.4 (64bit) and CS4. I have been afflicted with the dreaded "dark prints" since the R2400 and LR 1.0. Immediately after the update, I opened LR and proceeded to print a sample photo from a preset used with Red River Arctic Polar Satin with the supplied RR icc profile. The printer dialog was NOT as expansive, "Printer Setup" was missing. I printed anyway, with the limited options, not being able to verify the options. The print left me awestruck. I have kept various samples from past experiments. This last photo was...stunning. It is a dawn landscape of the summer Maine coast. For the first time in my experience with LR and Epson, the print was accurate to the display. The colors are accurate and vivid. The detail in the foliage, flowers and rocks is much superior to the past samples. The ONLY difference in my process was the upgrade to 10.6! I was concerned with the difference in the print dialog. Reading this thread and others (including the Epson website), it was recommended to install Rosetta as part of the optional post installation. I did the install. The options (and previous selections) for the printer dialog REAPPEARED as with 10.5.8! I printed another sample of the same photo. It was happily identical. I then printer the photo in CS4 with the "same" setting. The print was identical to the LR print.
    I am one happy camper.

  • You can't use this version of Font Book with Snow Leopard!

    Hi,
Since upgrading to Snow Leopard I get the following error message when attempting to open Font Book:
"You can't use this version of the application Font Book with this version of Mac OS X. You have Font Book 2.1."
Most solutions I've found via Google simply suggest reinstalling Snow Leopard. Does anyone know of a less drastic solution to this problem?
Could I copy the correct version of Font Book (v2.2) the SL CD?
    Thanks,
    Mateus

you should have fontbook 2.2 already if you installed SL. possibly you have an old leopard version of fontbook in a different location and that's what you are trying to run now. go to the main Applications folder at the top level of the hard drive and launch Font Book from there. does it run?

While the 2011 MBP's that shipped with Lion can be made to run Snow Leopard as long as you have the appropriate installer disk for 10.6.7 or later, yours is a 2012 MBP and most likely can never be made to run Snow Leopard because the necessary hardware support drivers (e.g., USB 3.0 support) simply aren't a part of that OS.

  • New iMac with OS x Lion.  Printing envelopes w/ Address book makes a second blank envelope. Drivers up to date. Have to mark print only first page. Had no problem with Snow Leopard. How to correct.

I recently purchased a new iMac with OS x Lion. Previously was using a four year old iMac with snow Leopard. I have three HP printers with up to date drivers for Lion.  When I try to print an envelope from Address Book I have two problems:
    1) I have to change the orientation to vertical to get the proper margins, which I never had to do before and
    2) It prints a second blank envelope unless I tell it to only print the first page.
Neither of the problems occurred with my previous iMac/w Snow Leopard  and it appears to be a Lion/HP software incompatibility. I have worked with a Apple supervisor (Case # 316225300) for hours and finally reinstalled the operating system to no avail.
I do I correct both problems???

Contact HP and ask them to write better drivers for Lion. Find a printer that is more compatible with Lion. I've not printed envelopes with Lion before, though I've had no difficulty with either Epson Artisan 810 or Canon MX700 for regular printing.  Sometimes open source drivers also work better than manufacturer drivers.  See this FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/printersx.html
While many open source drivers won't give you duplex or printer diagnostics, at least they may work better for other features.
Lastly, I've often found for a more consistent print, saving as PDF, and then printing from Preview can sometimes be the best work around.  Someone in the Mac OS X Technologies forum might be able to help you write an automator script to do this in one fell swoop, if you find it works better for your needs.

  • How do i use my apple id with ichat?

how do i use my apple id with ichat?

    Hi,
Only @Mac.com and MobileMe Apple IDs are valid AIM names as well  (And the Passwords need to be 16 characters of Less - AIM end Issue).
If you have any other form of Apple ID then you will need to register for either an @mac.com name  or create an AIM one.
NOTE The @Mac.com Registration requires you link an active Email to the @Mac.com name.
THIS CANNOT BE an Email address you have used for an Apple ID already.
The AIM Registration asks for Email address for Security and Password Recovery and is not Hard Linked in the same way (you could use the same email to set up multiple accounts/Screen Names)
    To state things another way:-
A MobileMe ID is an Email address.
It is an Apple ID and will work in those places it is supposed to, iTunes, Apple Support Communities (with Alias set up), Face Time (With Registration) Apple On-Line Store, Mac App Store.
It is a Vlaid AIM NAme as well (If the password is kept to 16 characters or less).
@mac.com names are Apple IDs with the same access as above.
It is a Valid AIM Screen Name.
If it was registered before MobileMe started it maybe linked to a Current MobileMe account as a valid Email.
A Current Registration is purposely for iChat use and Requires a Non Apple current Email that is NOT linked to any other Apple ID
Any other name or Email used to create an Apple ID is not an Email with/through Apple.
It is NOT a valid AIM screen Name.
It is only an Apple ID that allows access to the places listed above.
If it is an email this cannot be used to Register with @mac.com
    I hope this is clear.

  • How can I use 2 Apple IDs in Itunes? I have 2 IOS Devices. They each have there own AppleID. What is the proper way to sync both of them to Itunes?

How can I use 2 Apple IDs in Itunes? I have 2 IOS Devices. They each have there own AppleID. What is the proper way to sync both of them to Itunes? I wanted my teenager's AppleID to be different from mine so that she couldn't charge stuff to my AppleID, therefore I created me another one. Now when I go to Sync either device, it tells me that this IOS device can only be synced with one AppleID. Then I get a message to erase it, not going to do that, lol. If I logout as one ID and login as the other, will it still retain all synced information on the PC from the first IOS device? If I can just log in out of the AppleID, then I have no problem doing that as long as the synced apps, music, etc stays there for both. I am not trying to copy from one to the other, just want to make sure I have a backup for the UhOh times. If logging in and out on the same PC of multiple AppleIDs is acceptible then I need to be able to authorize the PC for both devices. Thanks for the help. I am new to the iOS world.

    "Method Three
Create a separate iTunes library for each device. Note:It is important that you make a new iTunes Library file. Do not justmake a copy of your existing iTunes Library file. If iTunes is open, quit it.
This one may work. I searched and searched on the website for something like this, I guess I just didn't search correctly, lol. I will give this a try later. My daughter is not be back for a few weekends, therefore I will have to try the Method 3 when she comes back for the weekend again. "
I forgot to mention that she has a PC at her house that she also syncs to. Would this cause a problem. I am already getting that pop up saying that the iPod is synced to another library (even though she is signed in with her Apple ID to iTunes) and gives the pop up to Cancel, Erase & Sync, or Transfer Purchases. My question arose because she clicked on "Erase & Sync" by mistake when she plugged the iPod to her PC the first time. When the iPod was purchased and setup, it was synced to my PC first. When she went home, she hooked it up to her PC and then she erased it by accident. I was able to restore all the missing stuff yesterday using my PC. However, even after doing that it still told me the next time I hooked it up last night that the iPod was currently synced with a different library. Hopefully, you can help me understand all this. She wants to sync her iPod and also backup her iPod at both places. Both PCs have been authorised. Thanks
