How do I write objects over a SocketChannel?

Using the regular Socket class we can pass objects over sockets like this.
Socket s = new Socket("127.0.0.1", 80);
ObjectOutputStream out = new ObjectOutputStream(s.getOutputStream());
out.writeObject(new Object());
Now, I've looked through the documentation on the new Channel classes and have only seen ways to pass bytes over the channel, not an entire object. Is there an easy way to pass an entire object over a channel? Am I just missing an appropriate wrapper that adds this functionality?
Thanks,
Dave

This code will help you converting an Object to a byte[]:
//Object to send MUST implement Serializable
SerializedObject anObject = new SerializedObject();
//byte[] needed to send
byte[] aByteArray = null;
//the conversion
java.io.ByteArrayOutputStream aByteArrayOutputStream = new java.io.ByteArrayOutputStream();
java.io.ObjectOutputStream aObjectOutputStream = new java.io.ObjectOutputStream(aByteArrayOutputStream);
aObjectOutputStream.writeObject(anObject);
aObjectOutputStream.close();
aByteArray = aByteArrayOutputStream.toByteArray();
//When you receive the Object you should reverse the conversion
//byte[] reveived from InputStream
byte[] aReceivedByteArray;
//Expected Object
SerializedObject theExpectedObject = null;
//the conversion
java.io.ByteArrayInputStream aByteArrayInputStream = new java.io.ByteArrayInputStream(aReceivedByteArray);
java.io.ObjectInputStream aObjectInputStream = new java.io.ObjectInputStream(aByteArrayInputStream);
theExpectedObject = aObjectInputStream.readObject();
That's one way to do it.
You should watch out with Serializable object when sending it to another OS or JRE-version.

  • Re: How to display Graphical objects over streaming video images??

    Hi, have you figured this out yet and if so, what is the answer?

    There are not just several steps that are required but also you need a very fast CPU (or you have to work with very very small images),
    The basic approach is to put the WebCam (video) input into a Processor and to add your own implementation of a "javax.media.Effect" to the processor (let's call it Overlay3DEffect).
    Then you can:
    - transform the input Buffer to a java.awt.Image,
    - get the Java3D image to be overlayed
    - overlay the WebCam image with the relavent part of the Java3D image
    -convert the resulting Image back to the output Buffer
    The above processing has to be performed In the
    public void process(Buffer in, Buffer out)
    of your effect (Overlay3DEffect)

  • How can I write new objects to the existing file with already written objec

    Hi,
    I've got a problem in my app.
    Namely, my app stores data as objects written to the files. Everything is OK, when I write some data (objects of a class defined by me) to the file (by using writeObject method from ObjectOutputStream) and then I'm reading it sequencially by the corresponding readObject method (from ObjectInputStream).
    Problems start when I add new objects to the already existing file (to the end of this file). Then, when I'm trying to read newly written data, I get an exception:
    java.io.StreamCorruptedException
    at java.io.ObjectInputStream.readObject0(Unknown Source)
    at java.io.ObjectInputStream.readObject(Unknown Source)
    Is there any method to avoid corrupting the stream? Maybe it is a silly problem, but I really can't cope with it! How can I write new objects to the existing file with already written objects?
    If anyone of you know something about this issue, please help!
    Jai

    Here is a piece of sample codes. You can save the bytes read from the object by invoking save(byte[] b), and load the last inserted object by invoking load.

  • How can I write relative path in File, ImageIcon objects

    I have downloaded examples from
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/components/example-swing/index.html
    but for some reason images are invisible until I write absolute paths?(I use windows) How can I write relative path in File, ImageIcon objects?

    Hello;
    I've found a lot of complaints about this through the Forte forum as well as on Dejanews. I'm just curious as to whether any of you ended up finding a solution to this problem.
    There was one posting about setting up the subdirectory as a URL rather than a String and then using that as the source of the ImageIcon ... but this didn't work for me.
    Any help whatsoever would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • How to transmit multiple messages over CAN

    Hi All,
    How to transmit multiple messages over CAN ? With all three messages i want to send the system time & date also.
    How can i get the timestamp in DBL format (Since the timestamp in the input of ncWriteNetMult.vi is a DBL). If possible kindly share the code in Labview 7.1 also.
    Thanks in advance.
    J

    The NI-CAN driver brings examples for nearly every use case. Driver version 2.4 or later has the Write multiple function to write multiple frames at ones.
    There is an example available for LabVIEW, CVI and VC/VBasic called CAN Transmit multiple.
    Also check the attached VI and the Can manual: http://www.ni.com/pdf/manuals/370289m.pdf
    What do you mean by converting Timestamp to DBL? Timestamp contains all date and time information. You can convert it into string format as shown below and then use the relevant data from it by string operations.
    Hope this solves your problem.

    Hello
    For using FTP function in LabVIEW, I recommend you to check this document: FTP Basics
    Also, take a look at FTP Browser.vi, which is available at the Example Finder.
    To edit a XML file, try to use VIs in XML palette. Maybe Write to XML.vi helps you.
    Post your current VI if possible.

    I don't know how, in java, to write files that are not pure text. I've been using the BufferedReader/Writer but it is not working. Can someone give me some sample code of how I can write file data correctly?

    First of all, if you aren't writing text then you shouldn't be using a Writer at all, you should be using an OutputStream. Writers deal with characters, OutputStreams deal with bytes. Second, the hard part of outputting those files is that you have to understand that they each have a defined structure you have to follow. For example, you can find a document that describes how a PDF file must be structured on Adobe's site. (Before you go searching for it, I'll just mention that it is over 500 pages long.) You have to write out bytes that satisfy the rules for the file type and arrange the content within those rules.

  • How to read appended objects from file with ObjectInputStream?

    Hi to everyone. I'm new to Java so my question may look really stupid to most of you but I couldn't fined a solution by myself... I wanted to make an application, something like address book that is storing information about different people. So I decided to make a class that will hold the information for each person (for example: nickname, name, e-mail, web address and so on), then using the ObjectOutputStream the information will be save to a file. If I want to add a new record for a new person I'll simply append it to the already existing file. So far so good but soon I discovered that I can not read the appended objects using ObjectInputStream.
    What I mean is that if I create new file and then in one session save several objects to it using ObjectOutputStream they all will be read with no problem by ObjectInputStream. But after that if in a new session I append new objects they won't be read. The ObjectInputStream will read the objects from the first session after that IOException will be generated and the reading will stop just before the appended objects from the second session.
    The following is just a simple test it's not actual code from the program I was talking about. Instead of objects containing different kind of information I'm using only strings here. To use the program use as arguments in the console "w" to create new file followed by the file name and the strings you want save to the file (as objects). Example: "+w TestFile.obj Thats Just A Test+". Then to read it use "r" (for reading), followed by the file name. Example "+r TestFile.obj+". As a result you'll see that all the strings that are saved in the file can be successfully read back. Then do the same: "+w TestFile.obj Thats Second Test+" and then read again "+r TestFile.obj+". What will happen is that the strings only from the first sessions will be read and the ones from the second session will not.
    I am sorry for making this that long but I couldn't explain it more simple. If someone can give me a solution I'll be happy to hear it! ^.^ I'll also be glad if someone propose different approach of the problem! Here is the code:
    import java.io.*;
    class Fio
         public static void main(String[] args)
              try
                   if (args[0].equals("w"))
                        FileOutputStream fos = new FileOutputStream(args[1], true);
                        ObjectOutputStream oos = new ObjectOutputStream(fos);
                        for (int i = 2; i < args.length ; i++)
                             oos.writeObject(args);
                        fos.close();
                   else if (args[0].equals("r"))
                        FileInputStream fis = new FileInputStream(args[1]);
                        ObjectInputStream ois = new ObjectInputStream(fis);
                        for (int i = 0; i < fis.available(); i++)
                             System.out.println((String)ois.readObject());
                        fis.close();
                   else
                        System.out.println("Wrong args!");
              catch (IndexOutOfBoundsException exc)
                   System.out.println("You must use \"w\" or \"r\" followed by the file name as args!");
              catch (IOException exc)
                   System.out.println("I/O exception appeard!");
              catch (ClassNotFoundException exc)
                   System.out.println("Can not find the needed class");

    How to read appended objects from file with ObjectInputStream? The short answer is you can't.
    The long answer is you can if you put some work into it. The general outline would be to create a file with a format that will allow the storage of multiple streams within it. If you use a RandomAccessFile, you can create a header containing the length. If you use streams, you'll have to use a block protocol. The reason for this is that I don't think ObjectInputStream is guaranteed to read the same number of bytes ObjectOutputStream writes to it (e.g., it could skip ending padding or such).
    Next, you'll need to create an object that can return more InputStream objects, one per stream written to the file.
    Not trivial, but that's how you'd do it.

  • How to remove the Object from memory.

    Hello.
    Flash file that i made with Flex Builder uses memory too
    much.
    Look at the next example source code.
    var testCan:Canvas = new Canvas();
    this.addChild(testCan);
    this.removeChild(testCan);
    testCan = null;
    but just memory usage still goes up, is not freed instantly.
    so if i load the large flash files on my web browser,
    after 5 munites or something, the web browser is down.
    How to remove the object from memory immediately without
    delay?

    It's all about the Garbage Collector ..
    There is a nice write up here :

  • How to Setup an ACL over a Command in solaris 2.6

    Hi all,
    Has anyone have an idea on how to setup an ACL over a command
    in solaris 2.6 . i.e: to force a user (or a group) to enter a
    password to run a command (like mount and others).
    Thanks for your help.
    haed98.
    [email protected]

    Hi head98,
    You can set ACL using setfacl commands. This way you can exclusively assign read/write/execute permissions on command that you wish. But ACL doesn't prompt for passwords or you can set passwords using ACL. One way of doing this will be to create wrapper for commands which will prompt for passwd, compare them with /etc/shadow and then execute the real command.
    Hope this helps, Thanks. SUN/DTS

  • How to use swf object

    Hi have been trying to get my head around how to use swf object, I know very little javascript and so am having difficulty in modifying the code to suit my needs.  This is my page which I have used dreamweaver cs3 and have used insert>media>flash and it is working well but does not validate.  I would really appreciate if somebody could write the exact html code I need to convert this to swf object.
    http://www.kimberleywebdesign.com.au/Links.html

    You should be able to just declare a variable outside of the onComplete function and assign it the loaded object when the file loads...
    var loadedSWF:MovieClip;
    function loadComplete(e:Event):void {
         removeChild(old_mc);
         addChild( DisplayObject(LoaderInfo(e.target).content) );
         loadedSWF = MovieClip(e.currentTarget.content);
    function doStuffToSWF(){
          loadedSWF.something....
