How do permissions work with iMovie Events folder?

I'm using iMovie and have one problem: every time I launch iMovie, the software takes a couple of minutes "optimizing movies." I read in the forums that a way to solve this problem is to change the permsions of the iMovie Events folder so that everyone has read/write access. This may solve the original problem, but could cause a new problem if i don't understand the implications.
I'm fairly new to Mac. My Mac has three types of users:
me
staff
everyone
We really only have one account on this computer. I think the other ones (staff and everyone) are default accounts.
What are the implications of giving staff and everyone read write access??
Could for example someone on another computer on my home wifi network delete or make changes to those folders and files?
Is there a way to solve my original problem (stop the "optimizing movies" every time i launch iMovie) without giving staff and everyone write access?

You have two options:
1) Add a Class-Path entry for each plug-in directory, not just the plugins.
Class-Path: plugins/myDir plugins/yourDir2) Go ahead and put the plug-ins in separate packages - package handling makes doing plug-ins easier in the long run. Two ways:
package plugins.myDir; // no Class-Path entry requiredor
package myDir; // which works with your current Class-Path

How do i import my iMovie event library to FCPX when the iMovie library is NOT in the home folder.

my situation:
my MBP is running two drives: a 160gb SSD that has my home folder, OS and all apps, and a 500gb HDD for data and non-essential software.
the HDD used to be my OS and home folder, so I used to run iMovie off it. but after installing the SSD, i am now running Lion off it, and it is now my new home folder.
so my iMovie events are now marooned on my ex-home folder, on what is now my HDD data drive.
I can import iMovie events no problem, as FCPX prompts for where the project files are. but FCPX doesn't prompt for the location of the iMovie events library, so how do i get those old iMovie events in?
i suppose i could copy all the events over to my SSD, then do the import, and then delete them. but that would take up a lot of space, and id rather not be copying and deleting so much data on the SSD.
is there any other way?

It is definitely to your advantage to use the FCP command to Import your iMovie Events all at once. The reason is you will not double up on space. FCP will create a hard lingk to your events so you can access them in FCP without altering the iMovie Event in any way, but without doubling the space.
So there are several ways you could approach this.
1) If you are not using iMovie anymore, you could simply move them to the iMovie Event folder at the top level of either your old drive, or any attached drive that is formatted correctly (Mac OS Extended (journaled). This would likely break any iMovie Projects that you currently have, so it is not recommended if you will continue to use iMovie.
2) If iMovie is still working, you can use iMovie to move the Events to a proper drive. Click VIEW/EVENTS BY DISK in iMovie, and Command-Drag in iMovie to Movie Events to the drive you want while maintaining your project links. This option is probably only available to you if you have set up your old drive as your official Home directory.
3) As long as you set your "old" drive to be your Home Folder in OSX, you can just leave them where they are. OSX lets you have the Home folder on a different drive than your startup drive. This is not ususally recommended, but it is useful when you have an SSD. When I got my current Mac with an SSD, I moved my home folder to the internal hard drive but OSX and my Apps are on the SSD.
To do this, I followed the advice of longtime poster Pondini, who has a great website that walks you through this.

I really appreciate all your help. Today I spent some time on the problem. First I purchased any video converter from the ap store and then I connected the camera to the mac with the original usb cable that came with the camera. I turned on the camera and selected backup on pc and the logo came up on my home page. I opened it and after several attempts i found the 3 video files that were on the camera. I then converted them from a tod file to mp4 and then transfered them to imovie. Now I have to figure out how to send the video to youtube or move it to an external hard drive which I have not been able to do. So far I am not too fond of imovie 11. If you could send me the download for imovie 6 I then could try that route. When talking to apple support yesterday about the problem they suggested to get Final Cut Express. I just bought the new Panasonic SDR-SW20 and it doesn't work with a Mac.
At least that is what I read at amazon.com.
The file types it records in are .MOD files. Can these be converted?
And if they can, how do I do that and what program do I need?
Could someone maybe explain to me how I can get it to work with iMovie?

Hi Sandy,
Yes, you bought the wrong format of cam for working easily with iMovie HD6. Your cam records in MPEG2, which will need to be converted to DV for use in iMovie. You might want to read what the following page says about that cam's format.

It doesn't give a good review of the video quality and that will only get worse with the conversion necessary to work with it in HD6. If returning the cam for something more suitable is possible, unless you have bought this solely for its underwater capabilities, that might be your best bet. The best cam for use with iMovie HD versions is a miniDV cam using firewire, to capture to your Mac.
If you want to persue the workarounds, you will need to get MPEGStreamclip (free-Google it) and the Apple QuickTime MPEG2 plug-in (cost $20.00), available at the Apple downloads site.

Airport Extreme with External HD with iMovie Events. Can't see them!

Here I go again. I just bought an Airport Extreme. I moved my External HD with iMovie Events from my MBP via FW to my Airport Extreme. I can see the partitions in Finder and the Events folder but when I open iMovie, I can't see my events in the library. Since I didn't change the names of the partitions I was hoping for seamless access. That is not the case. I can see the Disks but they have YELLOW exclamation marks on them. They don't seem to be valid. What gives. Looks like I have some more work to do.
Any ideas. Thought this would be easier.

Although this Apple KnowledgeBase article refers to "iMovie '08", I think you'll find that it applies equally to moving the storage of movie material in iMovie '09, too..

Converting zip drive to work with imovie

I download a lot of clips to my computer. When they are in a zip format what format do I convert the clip to so that it works with imovie when I use an internet converter like Zamzar. When I convert normal clips I convert to mp4 but that is not an option for zip files. What do I use now

zip is not a video codec/format but a compression algorithm.
Frankly, there's little benefit in compressing modern video formats which are highly compressed - you can end up wasting time to get a file slightly smaller or even larger than the original.
You simply need to decompress the zip 'archive'/folder and the movie within may or may not be iMovie compatible.
If it won't load direct to iMovie use something like Quicktime or MPEGStreamclip to convert to apple intermediate codec which is big but compatible for editing purposes.

Best to ask this question on the iMovie forum if you want to be sure someone who uses iMovie and that camera sees the question.
Still, if your computer has a firewire 400 port, the camera can be controlled by the computer.
Depending on the how much you want to use the camera and how many hours there already are on the heads, you may want to use less expensive DV cam (or find something like a Sony DSR-11) as the playback device to keep the wear and tear on the dvx down.

Does time machine work with the trash folder?

Does time machine work with the trash folder? So if I have the entire aperture library backed up to the time machine. Is it safe to empty the trash folder in aperture? I am able to recover files from time machine later?

So make a top-level Project called "_Circular File". Put Images in there that you what to have out of your way but not discarded.
It really is good and proper to treat the Trash as trash. I instruct everyone to _empty_ the Aperture Trash at the end of _every_ session. The reason is this: it is the only time you will remember whether it is safe to delete the items in there. If you wait, you will then waste time trying to answer "Did I really mean to throw that out?" or, periodically, you'll give up trying to remember, and will empty the Trash without reviewing it. At the end of every session, examine the Trash, confirm that the items there are trash, and empty it.
Shocking, perhaps, but you should also empty your system trash every day. The real-life equivalents are good guides here. No-one in an office hoards their trash. If you mean to throw something out, throw it out. If you don't mean to throw it out, do not put it in the trash.
I don't know how TM handles the Aperture Trash. I do know, however, that I would not expect this behavior to remain consistent, and would absolutely recommend against a workflow based on it.

You cannot merge two separate libraries across user accounts. Photos does not have the function of merging different Photos.library files. If you have Aperture then you can merge the two before migrating over to Photos.

An icloud account is designed to be used by one user. That user can have all his/her devices synced with the same Apple data (email, contacts, calendars, notes, reminders, etc.) . When two people use the same account, then problems usually occur when one user edits data that the other user doesn't want changed on their device. You can continue sharing the same ID for the itunes account in order to share the purchased music, apps, etc. itunes accounts and icloud accounts are different.
It's by far better that each user has his/her own icloud account.
