How do we clone a database from RAC/ASM to RAC/ASM?

Is there a best practice or recommended recipe for cloning from a RAC/ASM instance to another RAC/ASM instance? We've done single instance cloning in the past with RMAN and it looks like grid control does something similar -- until we try to clone from one Exadata cluster to another. Surely this is now a common procedure...?
much thanks,
Gary

Hi,
I would not use cloning with 11.2. anymore.
Though this will work (you have to take care of copying some more stuff though, like the gpnp profile), simply using the "addnode.sh" which works in silent mode in 11.2. is a lot easier.
Re: Any issues to add 3rd node to 11gr2 grid with 11.2.0.2 and 10.2.0.4 homes?

  • How to create a clone of database from STANDBY?

    How can i clone a database from physical standby database?

    Steps to clone from standby:
    1. cancle the managed recovery process on standby
    sql>alter database recover managed standby database cancel;
    2. Remember your standby databse would be in mount mode.
    3. Connect to the auxiliary instance and to the standby database through RMAN
    rman target sys/<pwd>@standby auxiliary sys/<pwd>@auxiliary-connection
    4. If 11g, then run directly duplicate from active database
    rman>duplicate target database to 'auxiliary_db_name' from active database nofilenamecheck;
    5. Once, the duplication is done, start the MRP on the standby again
    sql>alter database recover managed standby database disconnect from session;
    Ok..You are on 10g.
    Perform the above steps, but only thing is 1st you need to take the backup of the standby database first.

    Already steps are given here

    To fill in the void in the background, you can use the clone tool. However, for a large area that may not work well.
    A good alternative is to use a "digital patch". With the rectangular marquee tool , select a pleasing substitute from somewhere else in the picture (not a fire hydrant!),  then place this on its own layer (CTRL+J), and with the move tool position the patch and resize it if indicated
    You should also explore the Recompose tool (ALT+CTRL+R) which may work well for your purpose.

  • How to connect to  Oracle database from webdynprojava application

    Hi
    How to connect to  Oracle database from webdynprojava application. where can we provide the code to connect to database.?
    Thank You.

    Hi,
    You need to create  Java Bean model. The bean is a typical java bean with default constructor, getter and setter. You can have additional methods for query etc. The attributes in the class will be your model node and attributes.
    However you need to configure the connection and create JNDI using visual administrator before writing the code.
    You can also consider writing Session EJB with oracle and using them in WD.

    exp full database from 8i and import it in 10g. You can exp only particular schemas, it really depends, what kind of data you need, how much data You need to import and so on. But exp/imp is the answer how to get data into new database.

  • How Can I Copy an database from one server to another ?

    Hi All,
    I need to copy an existing database from one server to another server. I want to maintain all the settings from the source database.
    I´m not used to Oracle database and i´d be glad for any help.
    How can I do this ? Do I need to backup and restore in the other server ? Do I need to copy files from one server to another ?
    Any help will be really appreciated.
    Carlos.

    I think a simpler approach, other than using RMAN, is to do a database export from the source and then import them into the target database. But you will need to do some ground work on the target, i.e, create database, tablespaces, and schemas (with their name the same as those in the source database.)

  • How can I combine two databases, from two computers, to have one combined database of messages?

    My old XP computer recently died and I had to build a new Windows 8.1 machine. While I was down I used a laptop as a temporary replacement. Now my new machine is running fine and receiving e-mail, but I now have two databases--one on the new machine and one on the laptop. Both are based on a recent backup, so they are lengthy--except that the new machine's database has a hole in it for the period I was on the laptop and the laptop's database also has gaps. How can I combine two databases into one that includes the messages from both machines?
    Thanks in advance,
    profsimonie

    Thanks for your reply. My profile folder did not contain any MBOX files. I found them in another folder on another drive. The Import-Export tools simply transferred each folder to the current one as a sub-folder. Then I had to use ctrl-a to select everything in the folder and move them manually to the current folder (such as inbox). Then I could use the other utility you mentioned to remove the duplicates. This had to be done, one folder at a time, to combine each folder. It worked, but I had about thirty-five folders to deal with. The whole process took most of two days to complete. I wish there was a simple way to blend everything together in one action, but I could not find an add-on that would do this.

    Hello Tawfik,
    You can use RMAN duplicate with the following link for 9i.

  • How to connect to oracle database from visual basic 2010 express edition

    I have installed visual basic 2010 express edition on windows xp. But visual basic 2010 express edition supports Microsoft sql server database file,Microsoft sql server compact 3.5, Microsoft access database file. I want to connect to oracle database from visual basic 2010 express edition. So what drivers are required and how to do connectivity?

    Hello,
    I wasn't clear on what you were using to make the connection. I had a look in Visual Studio 2010 (don't have express to test sorry).
    I think you mean the Data Sources available under the menu Data-> Datasources. this seems to match the description you give when I
    look at the list of datasource options.
    In here you can make ODBC connections via the Microsoft .net Data Provider .
    If you select ODBC as a datasource you can see listed the DSN's you created - for example I see 2 which use the Oracle ODBC driver.
    This assumes you installed an Oracle Client + the oracle version of the ODBC driver (comes with the oracle client).
    Once you created a server connection then you should see it in the server explorer.
    You can also download the Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio which is an add on for VS.
    ** I suspect this is only for VS 2010 and I didn't see that Express was supported.

    Let me know if that helps.

  • How to connect to oracle9i database from Unix

    Hi All,
    How can i connect to remote oracle9i database(windows based) from Unix. I have following server information Server IP, Username , Userpassword , DataBase name.Do i need any other information to connect to server?
    How can i connect database from Putty?
    Do i need to install SQL on the Unix to connect to oracle server?
    and which C/C++ API i have to use to access tables from the remote oracle server?
    please help me i am new to oracle .
    Thanks in advance.

    Oracle generally uses a special set of software, commonly called the SQLNet or Oracle Networking, as a layer to provide a connection between the client and the database server.
    In general terms,
    - the client software (perhaps sqlplus, an application, ODBC) calls Oracle Networking on the client computer and says "please connect to database known as 'x'";
    - Oracle Networking translates the request, often by looking up 'x' in the TNSNAMES.ORA file at the client side, to get the host name, the port the Oracle listener is waiting on, and the name of the database service to access;
    - Oracle Networking contacts the computer on the required port. If the listener is there, the Oracle Networking client asks for a connection to the database service;
    - The Listener (if it recognizes it) asks the database service for a 'server process';
    - The database starts up a server process which grabs a network port and tells the listener which port was obtained;
    - The listener tells Oracle Networking on the client which port to use;
    - The client disconnects from the Listener, and reconnects at that port;
    - The server process starts authentication and session initialization, after which we are good to go.
    In answer to your questions:
    1) How can i connect database from Putty?
    That implies you want to telnet to the Windows box and run the client stuff locally on the Windows box. So that means you need to look at telnet or ssh documentation - this has nothing to do with Oracle.
    2) Do i need to install SQL on the Unix to connect to oracle server?
    Not really. It does mean you might want to install an Oracle CLIENT (see the download section of http://otn.oracle.com) which will initiate the sequence as above.
    A different sort of client is SQL Developer, a Java-based GUI with it's own built-in Oracle Networking, that displays database stuff. That is also offered by Oracle at the same download page.
    3) and which C/C++ API i have to use to access tables from the remote oracle server?
    Oracle provides a C/C++ API as a pre-processor, called Pro*C. I suspect this si way beyond what you want right now.
    4) please help me i am new to oracle .

  • Need to Clone A Database From Solaris to Linux Oracle 11g

    Hi Team,
    I am using Oracle Database Version 11.2.0.1.
    We have 6 production servers and all of them are in solaris box. We have a new requirement from application to use Linux boxes and for that we need to perform a database refresh from Solaris to Linux box.
    I can do it by Export and Import technique. But I want some other way to perform this database refresh activity.
    1] Can I do it while taking a rman backup from solaris box( Source) and restore it back to Linux( Target)?
    2] Can I do it using transportable tablespace method?
    I am aware of performing this using export-import but as our database size is near of 1TB I can't apply this technique.
    I need your suggestions in this activity, please put your opinion on the correct method I should opt for and along with that share me the supporting document where things are mentioned in step by step way.
    Please let me know if this can achieved by RMAN...
    Source Machine Make:-
    bash-3.00$ uname -a
    SunOS blrdlvdwhdb01 5.10 Generic_142909-17 sun4v sparc SUNW,Sun-Blade-T6320
    Target System Make:-
    Linux blrulvremoradb01 2.6.18-194.el5 #1 SMP Tue Mar 16 21:52:39 EDT 2010 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

    Yes, you can create a backup with rman and restore in other platform, check:
    How To Use RMAN CONVERT DATABASE on Source Host for Cross Platform Migration - 413586.1
    Cross-Platform Migration on Destination Host Using Rman Convert Database - Note 414878.1
    but easier and faster will be with expdp/impdp.

    Best regards,

    You have to skt the maker of the backup tool. It isn't SQL Server or its tool that initiates the backup commands. It is apparently your Tivoli application (judging by the file path you posted).

  • Has anyone been able to clone a database from cloud 12c

    I can duplicate a database from a user defined RMAN script, as long as I include the connection request to the auxiliary database, but I've not been able to get the 'Clone Database' feature under the provisioning menu to work using an active duplicate.
    I get a username password error which is identical to what you'd get if you did
    rman target / auxiliary sys/<password> catalog rman/rman@RMAN_tns  as opposed to
    rman target sys/<password> auxiliary sys/<password> catalog rman/rman@RMAN_tns
    when doing a manual duplication...
    I've got an SR with Oracle..but has anyone managed to make this work ?
    Thanks

  • How to copy/move Portal database from one machine to another?

    I am receiving a ORA-22973 error (size of object identifier exceeds maxmum size allowed) on the wwsec_enabler_config_info$ table when attempting to import my entire "portal30" schema from one database to another on different Windows NT Servers.
    Background: I had Portal 3.0.9.8 installed, configured, and running with the following setup:
    Machine 1: Windows NT 4.0 SP 6, Oracle 9iAS 1.0.2.2, Oracle Portal 3.0.9.8
    Machine 2: Windows NT 4.0 SP 6, Oracle 8i Database 8.1.7.0.0
    We no longer have use of Machine 2 and needed to move the database over to Machine 1.
    I performed the following steps:
    1. Installed Oracle 8i database 8.1.7.0.0 on Machine 1.
    2. Set up the tablespaces in the database on Machine 1 to match the same names and sizes of the tablespaces in the database on Machine 2.
    3. Used the Oracle "exp" command to export the entire database that resided on Machine 2.
    4. Copied the ".dmp" file to Machine 1.
    5. Used the Oracle "imp" command to import the entire database on Machine 1.
    6. The import completed successfully with warnings. But I had received the ORA-22973 error during the import process.
    7. After it completed I compared the list of tables and packages in the "portal30" schema between the two databases. The wwsec_enabler_config_info$ table is missing.
    8. I tried to export and import only the wwsec_enabler_config_info$ table between the two databases, but continue to receive the ORA-22973 error.
    Without the table being created, access to the portal cannot be achieved.
    Here are my questions:
    1. Is there anyway to create the wwsec_enabler_config_info$ table without receiving the noted error?
    2. Is there any other workable way to get the portal database from Machine 2 to Machine 1?
    I am aware of the portal import/export utilities but that would require me to run through the 2 hour install of Portal 3.0.9.8 on the database on Machine 1 and then individually export and import all the portal components (security, pages, applications, content library, etc). I merely wanted to transfer the entire database from one machine to another, so I felt the Oracle exp/imp utilities would be quicker and less work.

    Hi,
    I've been hitting problems with Portal 3.0.9.8.1 against 8.1.7.2.1 on NT - i.e., Intermedia not working at all, and have been advised by support to move back to 8.1.7.1.1.
    I don't want to lose any of my content in the Portal since the db upgrade and am wondering on what is the best way to do this.
    The version of the Portal will be the same so I am hoping I can just use the Portal export and import utilities, as afterall, it is just data and the schema structures are the same between db versions. I'm also hoping that the Portal export doesn't use the standard Oracle EXP tool as it doesn't work anymore on 8.1.7.2.1 on NT!!

  • Rman clone duplicate database from active database

    Hi All,
    I read document saying that rman can duplicate database from active database (prod) to a remote server, so long as you configure listener and tnsname.
    I am working toward it.
    I met a problem, which is when i bring up auxiliary database in nomount mode, the listener service of that auxiliary database is in BLOCKED status, and throw out ora-12528 error when I rman auxiliary sys/pass@clonedb. Isn't nomount mode the mode which auxiliary db is supposed to be in?
    (ora-12528: TNS:listener: all appropriate instances are blocking new connections)
    Thanks,
    milic

    You may have run into the same problem like I did recently:
    The (UR=A) clause in tnsnames.ora is intended to work with a dynamically registered handler so the use of SERVICE_NAME versus SID is preferred.
    ORA-12528: TNS listener BLOCKED - trying to duplicate database
