How do we get the song of the week free?

I've heard that on Itunes you get the song of the week free. If this is true, how do I redeem this song?

A free Song of the Week is also available in the UK, Canadian, and French iTMS. There could be others as well (I haven't taken the time to check them all), but present not all iTunes Music Stores have free tracks (presumably because Apple has as yet been unable to make appropriate arrangements with the record companies in those countries).
Linda, you do need to have a valid account in one of the iTMS that does offer the free tracks. To create such an account (if you don't have one already), you'll need a credit card with a billing address in that country or a gift certificate or prepaid card purchased in that country and a mailing address in the country.

You will need to buy software that will allow you to move music from the ipod to the computer. Ipods will not allow you to do it unless you get something else that "unlocks" it. I bought Ipod music liberator from Zeleksoftware

How do I get iTunes songs off the iCloud back onto my computer, preferably without changing the purchase date to today's date?

Trying to download previously purchased iTunes songs that are firmly embedded in the iCloud. At one point these songs were all on my computer. Then I idiotically joined iCloud. All the songs were sucked off and into iCloud. iCloud couldn't provide more than twenty seconds of any song without freezing whatever device, Macbook Pro, iPhone 4s, ipods, or breaking up the playback into fits and starts and finally silence, ever, no matter if the connection was cable or wireless.
I have ever update on every device, I have the max. RAM, excess disk/flash space. The problem is the difficulty of downloading. Oddly the download to my ancient PC went almost without a hitch, it is with Apple devices that the trouble lies.
About 2/3 of the songs have successfully downloaded to my computer. However the purchase date, which I used frequently as a search/sort function, have on many of the songs been switched to today's date, or the date of the latest download instead of my original purchase date.
Many songs downloaded, many remain in the cloud with the 'cloud' icon beside them.
Clicking on the "download all" icon doesn't download them all.
They begin to download and then stop/freeze.
I'm reduced to manually scrolling to each song and clicking on the 'cloud' to download, this works sometimes and sometimes it doesn't. The whole thing usually crashes after a while.
This is where I am now, at the iTunes store on the "Purchased" page with all my songs in a list with "downloaded" or a "cloud icon" in the far right column, frozen once again.
I really would like to maintain the original purchased date(the day when I purchased the song from iTunes) but I'm to the point where I'd just be happy to get them downloaded onto the Macbook Pro, and hopefully never deal with the cloud again for the rest of my life.
Lastly, if anyone can recommend an alternative music site to iTunes it would be welcome.

I copied the iTunes file from the external drive and it's in both places. I thought all I would need is the iTunes program (which I downloaded to new computer) and my iTunes library file. There must be something else that's missing. My iTunes library looks the same on the new computer as it does when I open it on the external drive. If I click on an iTunes library song from my new computer, it will only play if I have the external drive plugged in.
My back-up drive is a mess. I have multiple copies of music, video, photo, and document files and I don't know how that happened. ={ Obviously, I don't know how to back up stuff properly and there are back-up files extending over a 6- to 8-year period. I think all I did was just drag and drop the main folders from the back-up drive to the same main folders on the C: drive. Also (and I'm kind of fuzzy on this) Windows used to automatically save music files in a folder within my document files (which makes no sense to me). As my Jewish friends would say, "Oy Vey!"

Connect your iPod to your computer. When you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

If your country's iTunes Store allows you to redownload purchased tracks, I'd delete your current copy of the track and try redownloading a fresh one. See the following document for instructions:

Check the songs are really not in the Music section of the library by clicking the magnifying glass in the search box and unticking Search Entire Library if it is ticked, then typing in the name of the album. If the tracks still don't show try closing iTunes and deleting a hidden file called sentinel from inside your iTunes folder. This should make iTunes run an integrity check on the database when you start it again. Make sure the tracks are checked before you try syncing again.

Turned Match off and songs that had been deleted from my hard drive (but NOT deleted from my library) disappeared - how can I get those songs to reappear in my library without manually re-adding the matched files that I had deleted from my hard drive?

I was trying to turn off iTunes Match on my iPhone and first turned Match off on my MacBook rather than on my iPhone (which was wrong, I should have just turned it off on the iPhone). I had ~28,000 songs in my library when I turned off iTunes Match; I had deleted ~8,000 of those files from my laptop (which I backed up on a portable hard disk) but I left the deleted files in my library, so that I could play them through iTunes Match. One of the benefits of Match, right? Saving hard drive space. So I turned off iTunes Match on my MacBook thinking that was how to turn it off on the iPhone (it wasn't), and when I turned Match back on, those ~8,000 songs were not in my library. I tried to update Match several times but can't seem to get the songs back. I know they are still in the cloud somewhere though, because if Match restarted then it would match/upload all of my remaining ~20,000 songs - but it hasn't, I still have thousands of "exceeded limit" songs. Anyone know how I can get those songs back?

I would not use iTunes Match as a backup. There are too many bugs and I don't think that's what they intended it to be anyway. The main advantage of using it is to make your music available on OTHER devices, not to replace the music on your original computer.
