How do WLC's work out coverage holes etc

Hi all
with the cisco wlc and lwapp access points, how do the access points adjust there power settings to compensate, what are they looking for?
do they look for noise / interference from the nearby ap, then increase or backoff the power until there is roughly 50% overlap between access points, can anyone explain how it works here?
cheers
Carl

Hello Carl,
ok , to make it clear for you how WLC power and channel settings work will explain here how RRM ( radio resource management work).
RRM consist of 3 componenets , DCA ( dynamic channel assignment) , TPC ( transmit power control)  , CHD ( coverage hole detection).
1) DCA: once the WLC boot and AP's registered the WLC will force channel configuration to the AP to make sure the least possibile co-channel interference between the AP's.
so this algorithm will configure for each AP at will channel it need to operate.
the DCA can be configured from wireless ->>> 802.11 A/B/G->>> RRM ->>> DCA.
the DCA interval specify how frequent the WLC handle the channel updates on the AP's.
note after boot the WLC will require 6 DCA iterations to stabilize the RF.
2) TPC: this algorithm will configure how much power the AP transmit.
it has levels from 1-7 ( 1 is the maximum level)
note : this algorithm can downgrade the pwoer level if it find it is too high...
how the algorithm determine this is too high? and how much overlapping?
this is based on TPC configuration that can be configured from wireless ->>> 802.11 A/B/G->>> RRM ->>> TPC.Power Threshold (-80 to -50 dBm)
so if you configure here lets say -65 , if the AP hearing other neighbours with signal strongest than -65 (lets say -50)then there is possibility RF issues and the WLC will instruct corresponding  AP's to downgrade their power to meet the criteria ( - -65 or less from other neighbours)
this will minimize co-channel interference.
note for TPC/DCA to work fine each AP should be designed (places) to be heraed by 3 other neighbours. with signal no stonger than X ( that is configured as power threshold)
3) CHD: this will increase the power level of the AP in case it notices some clients has bad signal.
when it will instrcut to increase power?
if you go to  wireless ->>> 802.11 A/B/G->>> RRM ->>> coverage you can see two components (RSSI and Min Failed Client Count per AP (lets say X).
now if single AP hearing that number of X clients with signal strengh below the configured RSSI . then this is coverage hole and WLC instruc to increase its power to cover those clients with better signal.

  • How is 2.1 working out?

    I have a 1st gen. touch. Have NOT upgraded to 2.0, because of all the bugs. How is 2.1 working for everyone? I would really like to upgrade, so I can add some apps, but I want to know if there are as many issues with 2.1

    I'll tell you that since I've owned my iPod Touch since October of last year and have done the upgrades as they've come out, I'm truly satisfied. 2.0 had some quirkiness with the AIM app and other apps were locking up, but I've seen that 2.0.1 took care of this for me (I see others had issues though).
    2.1 is working great. I notice one thing with 2.1: If you add songs, you have to tell iTunes (under the Store menu) to update your Genius playlist, then these songs can go under the new playlists.
    Other than that, I'm happy. I do notice now that with 2.1, the amount of time it takes to backup the iPod Touch has gone down significantly. It's less than a minute to run the 7 GB backup of my files on my 16GB iPod Touch.
    I'd say go for it. Apple's obviously fixing things now and it's getting much better.

    That is fine in the US....but I am traveling to the UK on Monday, inwhich I will not have cell service.....what music will I have or can get while their?
    What other apps/email/etc will be able to get when I hook up to like the hotel's wifi?
    I use Verizon here, but can't affoard the cell or data packages there!
    Looking for thoughts/advice!

    1. Shut down your computer.
    2. Restart and don't click anything.
    3. If it still says SAFE MODE, shut down your computer again.
    4. When you start your computer up, hold the option button until a screen comes up displaying your Mac OS X Statup disk.
    5. Boot into that and it should not longer say SAFE MODE.
    I hope this helped.

  • Working out with 30GB video

    I was at the gym tonight with my 30gb video ipod and one guy was saying about how you shouldn't work out with it as it is a hard drive mp3 player and not a flash drive... Is this true??? should i not run with it? What will happen to it?

    I have ran with my 60gb many times and not had an issue.. just to be safe you may want to buy an armband or something to keep it secure to your body that way you wont have an issue.

    Go to System Preferences (under the Apple logo in the menu bar).  Choose "General".  Click "Always close windows when quitting an application".
    That should fix it.

    Will not work.  To my knowledge, dual converting like that isn't supported.  The Mac must detect the connected video output device and that sort of info cannot be done across an analog component uni-directional connection.

  • I have a macbook pro and use BT homehub 3.  can't work out how to connect my time capsule. can anyone help, thanks.

    I have a macbook pro and use BT homehub 3.  can't work out how to connect my time capsule. can anyone help?  thanks

    Just need to plug the TC in to the hub in bridge mode.. do not try and bridge the homehub.. it is not possible with the setup BT uses.
    To bridge the TC.. plug it directly into a computer by ethernet.. no other connection to the TC or the computer.
    Press and hold in reset until the front LED flashes rapidly.. about 10sec.
    Release the reset.
    Open the airport utility and setup the TC to bridge mode.
    The actual method depends on version of the OS and airport utility you use.
    This is version 5.
    Sorry I cannot post the v6 as I am on a snow leopard computer now. But you go to the network tab, and choose off bridge mode for method of connection. It will be NAT and dhcp by default.
    Then setup wireless.. you have a number of choices here.
    Either setup with the same SSID Security and password, as the homehub uses.. or a different name, and password..
    Each method works fine.. but you sometimes have issues with wireless channels.. for now leave it on auto and see what happens.. if you have issues lock down the radio channels on both devices.. use one out of the following on each, 1, 6, 11 or 13 in UK.. so say 6 on the homehub then 13 onthe TC.
    Update the TC.. unplug fromt the computer and plug it into the homehub.
    If you have other issues with the setup tell us what OS you run so we can post suitable screenshots.

    I prepare chronologies in word, and I am trying to do the same in pages using tables and cells. What are the different opinions on why pages should not achieve this?
    As far as I know, Apple is free to choose to offer this or that feature.
    They never said that they want to clone Word or even compete with it.
    Differences between tables in both worlds are numerous.
    In Pages (or Numbers)
    - we can't sort a single column
    - we can't sort by row
    - we can't insert or remove a single cell
    - a cell can't cross pages boundaries
    If I understand well these design choices match :
    ++-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-++
    Apple Human Interface Guidelines:
    Apply the 80 Percent Solution
    During the design process, if you discover problems with your product design, you might consider applying the 80 percent solution‚ that is, designing your software to meet the needs of at least 80 percent of your users. This type of design typically favors simpler, more elegant approaches to problems.
    If you try to design for the 20 percent of your target audience who are power users, your design may not be usable by the other 80 percent of users. Even though that smaller group of power users is likely to have good ideas for features, the majority of your user base may not think in the same way. Involving a broad range of users in your design process can help you find the 80 percent solution.

  • I have updated my Apple ID via my iPad, but my other devices still think the ID is the old one and I can't work out how to update them

    Yesterday, after discovering that the email address I used as my Apple ID was about to be deleted, I used my iPad to update my Apple ID to a new one.  Everything went fine, until I moved on to my iPhone, which is still asking me for the password for my OLD Apple ID.  I can't work out how to tell either my iPhone or my Macbook that this one is out of date and get them to change to the new one.  iTunes is changed, but the settings aren't.  Can anyone help me please?

    You haven't stuffed it, you just haven't signed out, so do that now, everywhere your old ID appears needs to be signed out of.
    Any variant of "Find My" (phone/mac/pad etc) that's signed in should be signed out.
    List what needs a sign out if you don't know how to.

    I trasferred pictures over from my computer to my iPhone 5 and now i cannot delete these pictures from my phone, and i cannot work out how to delete them from my phone by the computer as the pictures do not show up in my files on the computer, how can i remove them i have over 400 pictures that need removing?

    If you have a Mac with iPhoto, plug the iPhone in and open iPhoto. Choose to import the photos. Once they have been imported, there should be an option to "Remove Imported Photos from Device". Choose this.

  • How can i work out the GMT time wherever i am ?

    Hi, i'm going crazy with the date/time classes, just can't seem to work it out.
    I need to know the current time as a GMT time.
    I need to know wherever the program is running, i myself am in Amsterdam GMT+02:00 , my server is located in Canada GMT-04:00 (?)
    I parse dates from websites all over the world so i get times in the form of strings of which i know the timezone. I need to store everything in a mysql database and i want the database to contain GMT times only.
    I've worked out how to get a string from its timezone into GMT but,
    how can i get the current time as GMT ?
    somehow i keep getting timeshifts i cannot explain.
    this is where i got to:
    TimeZone tz_gmt;
    tz_gmt = TimeZone.getTimeZone("GMT");
    SimpleDateFormat sdformat = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss");
    sdformat.setTimeZone(tz_gmt);
    Timestamp tsGmtnow;
    tsGmtnow = Timestamp.valueOf(sdformat.format(new Date()));
    Which is fine if i run it in Amsterdam, it gives me the current date/time in GMT, but on the server in Canada it gives me GMT+4 hours. What am i missing ?

    found a workaround,
         TimeZone tz_gmt;
         tz_gmt = TimeZone.getTimeZone("GMT");
         TimeZone tz_can;
         tz_can = TimeZone.getTimeZone("GMT-04:00");
         TimeZone tz = TimeZone.getDefault();
         String Stz = tz.getID();
         SimpleDateFormat sdformat = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss");
         Timestamp tsGmtnow;
    if ( "Europe/Berlin".compareTo(Stz) == 0) {
         // i'm in Europe, go from local time to GMT
         sdformat.setTimeZone(tz_gmt);
         tsGmtnow = Timestamp.valueOf(sdformat.format(new Date()));
    } else {
         // i'm in Canada, local time IS gmt
         sdformat.setTimeZone(tz_can);
         tsGmtnow = Timestamp.valueOf(sdformat.format(new Date()));
    out.println(tsGmtnow.toString());
    the default timezone returns either:
    Europe/Canada
    GMT-04:00
    somehow the GMT-04:00 get ignored by the formatter

  • How do I save a photo after I have zoomed in on it?  I want to save the zoom-in as a new photo and can't work out why this doesn't work the same way saving a cropped image, or adjusted image does.  Thank you.

    How do I save an image after I have zoomed in on it?  I can't work out why I can't save a zoom-in the same way
    I can save a cropped image or an adjusted image. Thanks, Lily A.

    Hi Matt, thanks for your reply.  Have realised that Zoom in Iphoto is just  a viewing tool and not an editing tool.
    Was creating beautiful abstractions by zooming in and wanted to create a new image of the result.   Have since discovered that cropping after zooming takes me a little way to where I want to go but it isn't the same effect.  Will perhaps have to try to create it when actually shooting.  Am doing a photoshop course in February and maybe will learn a bit more then, too.  Am pretty much an amateur just finding my way.
    Thanks again,

  • Please help! i need to make multiple custom shaped frames for different videos in one scene and cant work out how!

    hi there!
    im really stuck on this and cant work it out i hope you guys can help! i have been trying to make a single shot or scene whatever you want to call it with multiple videos playing all at the same time in it but i want them all to have their own custom shape. i know that i can just put them together into one frame and play them at once but they are all the original rectangle shape they where filmed in and i could put a mask over each one to make it a circle but i want to make each one a custom shape for example if you where to make a face out of 4 videos and one was the shape of the main part of the face one was the eyes one for the hair and one for the mouth now i would have to make the shape of each video the right shape for the corresponding body part then place them on top of each other and then i would have a face made from looping videos. i cannot work out how to make the frames of each video a custom shape after searching tutorials please can someone help me with this it would be greatly appreciated as it is a collage project. thanks very much for your time in the matter Josh.

    ok thanks yea thats helped alot im new to this so thats why it seems basic to you but not me. i have tryed to find out through tutorials but could work it out. im now able to do this but i want to draw my mask free hand and it seems you can only place points with the pen tool? is this the only way to make the shape of my mask? or example in photoshop which i know well i can use a paint brush and paint any shape i want to make a mask but i cant see how to do that in after effects? any help on this would be greatly appreceated. thanks josh
